The two new build locomotive of Baureihe 66 from Deutsche Bundesbahn have been designed for express goods train service and passenger train service on main and sidetracks of German Deutsche Bundesbahn.



The top speed of 100 km/h and a load per axle of only 15 t where good qualifications for that. Baureihe (Series) 66 was meant to replace the models from the Series (Baureihe) 38.10, 78 and 93.
