In 1973 Charles A. Beichman received his A.B in Astronomy from Harvard college in Cambridge, Massachusetts where he was Magna Cum Laude. He continued his education at the University of Hawaii in Honolulu, where he earned his Masters of Science in Astronomy in 1975 and his Masters of Science in Physics in 1976. While there he finally earned his Ph.D. in Astronomy in 1979 with a dissertation about the formation of late O and early B stars within dense molecular clouds.
Career[edit]
He started as a Summer Research Assistant at Harvard College Observatory in 1973 and later became a Research Assistant at the University of Hawaii in 1975 to 1979. In 1981 he became a Staff Scientist at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, a position he still holds. He was a Project Scientist on the IRAS Project from 1984 to 1985. He later moved on to become a project scientist at the Infrared Processing and Analysis Center at the California Institute of Technology (1985-1989), he later became director in 1991. He is currently Executive Director of the NASA Exoplanet Science Center at Caltech/JPL, a position he was appointed to in 2003.[1]
Awards/Achievements[edit]
Charles Beichman won many awards in his life, which includes The NASA Group Achievement Awards for IRAS Hardware Development and Data Analysis in 1984. In the late 80’s and early 90’s, Beichman was involved in multiple work such as Project 3 Scientist of the Astrophyics Division and Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Supervisor of the Infrared Astrophysics Group, Project Scientist of the IRAS Project, Staff Scientist of the Propulsion Laboratory, and so much more. During that time, he was a recipient for NASA Exceptional Service Medal, The National Association of Graphics Artists: Origins Web Site in 1997, and NASA Scientific Achievement Award in 1999. Beichman’s most recent achievement is the NASA Exceptional Service Award in 2004 for his work/service as a Chief Scientist. As of right now, he is the Senior Scientist of JPL, Senior Faculty Associate of the California Institution Technology, and Executive Director of NASA Exoplanet Science Center, which means many more awards are in his favor.
