Thoughts on Wikipedia[edit]

The hardest part about fighting for a neutral point of view on Wikipedia is that most people are so convinced of the correctness of their own opinions that they whole heartedly mistake them for fact.

Personally, I try to only quote policy as a last resort. I find that more often than not propositions that contain bold declarations of policy only require such declarations because they are not able to stand on their own as logical arguments.

Favorite quotes[edit]

Doesn’t it seem like everybody just shouts at each other nowadays? I think it’s because conflict is drama, drama is entertaining, and entertainment is marketable. Finding a consensus and common ground is dull! Nobody wants to watch a civilized discussion that acknowledges ambiguity and complexity. We want to see fireworks! We want the sense of solidarity that comes from having our interests narrowed and exploited by like-minded zealots! Talk show hosts, political candidates, news programs, special interest groups… They all become successful by reducing debates to the level of shouted rage. Nothing gets solved, but we’re all entertained. - Calvin, Calvin and Hobbes

Any man who reads too much and uses his own brain too little falls into lazy habits of thinking. - Albert Einstein

To accomplish anything whatsoever one must have standards. None have yet accomplished anything without them. The gentlemen fulfilling their duties as generals and councillors have their standards. Even the artisans performing their tasks also have their standards. The artisans make square objects according to the square, circular objects according to the compasses; they draw straight lines with the carpenter's line and find the perpendicular by a pendulum. All artisans, whether skilled or unskilled, employ these five standards. Only the skilled workers are accurate. Though the unskilled labourers have not attained accuracy, yet they do better by following these standards than otherwise. Thus all artisans follow the standards in their work. - Mozi

Imagination and memory are but one thing, which for diverse considerations hath diverse names. - Leviathan, Thomas Hobbes

But truth endures and is strong for ever, and lives and prevails for ever and ever. With it there is no partiality or preference, but it does what is righteous instead of anything that is unrighteous or wicked. Everyone approves its deeds, and there is nothing unrighteous in its judgment. To it belongs the strength and the kingship and the power and the majesty of all the ages. Blessed be the God of truth! - 1 Esdras 4:39-41

[Humans] seem to find no tranquility in anything. You struggle against the inevitable. You thrive on conflict. You are rash, quick to judge, slow to change. Its amazing you've survived. As a species, we have no common ground. You are too aggressive. Too hostile. Too militant. - Nagilum, Star Trek: The Next Generation, Where Silence Has Lease

I've been around long enough to know how ignorant I am. I don't assume the universe obeys my preconceptions. Hah! But I know a frelling fact when it hits me in the face. - Dominar Rygel XVI, Farscape, I Shrink Therefore I Am

Working under the assumption that Kolrami is attempting to win, it is reasonable to assume that he expects me to play for the same goal. […] I was playing only for a standoff -- a "draw." While Kolrami was dedicated to winning, I was able to pass up obvious avenues of advancement and settle for a balance. Theoretically, I should be able to challenge him indefinitely. - LCDR Data, Star Trek: The Next Generation, Peak Performance

If you can't explain it simply, you don't understand it well enough. - Albert Einstein
