Metamorphosis is the second episode of the first season of the WB original series, Smallville. The episode was written by Alfred Gough and Miles Millar and was directed by Michael Watkins and [Philip Sgriccia]]. It originally aired on October 23, 2001.

{{spoiler}} Greg Arkin is a nerdish bug collector. His mom finds a videotape he has taken of Lana (a family friend) without her knowledge. The ensuing confrontation causes Greg to become angry and leave his house in his car. While driving, his collection of kryptonite irradiated bugs gets loose and stings him, transforming him into a half man/half insect monster.

At roughly the same time, Clark dreams of Lana and wakes up to find himself floating above his bed. This is the first instance of Clark "flying" in Smallville. Later Clark confronts Whitney over the Smallville High hazing ritual where Whitney and his friends hung Clark up like a scarecrow. Whitney demands that Clark return Lana's necklace which had been placed on him during the hazing ritual but Clark informs him that he doesn't have it.

After arguing with and then killing his mother, Greg decides to mate with Lana. Chloe and Clark learn of Greg's transformation and Clark fights and defeats Greg in a kryptonite laden old foundry. At the same time Whitney rescues Lana from the cocoon that Greg had placed her in.

  • Greg Arkin's last name is a reference to Orkin exterminators.
  • Jonathan Kent tells Clark that he "was meant for much greater things then winning football games." A direct quote of Jonathan to Clark in the 1978 Superman film.[1]

Clark: Dad, something else happened to me this morning. When I woke up, I was kind of floating.
Jonathan: Floating.
Clark: As soon as I woke up I crashed. I mean, Dad, what's happening to me?
Jonathan: I honestly don't know. As soon as you start breaking the law of gravity we're definitely in uncharted territory.
