‘’’Innis ‘’’Maggiore is an independently owned American advertising agency best known for its work for Microsoft, Aultman Hospital, Sherwin-Williams and Goodyear. Founded by Chuck Innis and Dick Maggiore, and headquartered in Canton, Ohio, is among the top 10% of 4A advertisng agencies and is the nation's leading agency in the practice of positioning.

History[edit]

Innis Maggiore’s roots date back to 1974, when M. Charles Innis established an agency called MCI Marketing in Canton. The agency began as a print collateral house that routinely churned out artwork and brochures for clients. The migration to full-scale advertising work progressed throughout the 70’s and early 80’s. By 1984, MCI Marketing was ready for (and in need of) national caliber creative. With the addition of a new creative director, a new and improved agency had arrived along with a brand new name – Innis Maggiore Olson.

Between 1985 and 1991, during Barry Olson’s tenure at the creative helm, the agency began to flourish. Olson had helped the agency become one of northeastern Ohio’s top creative shops. By 1988, Innis Maggiore Olson had offices in Canton and downtown Cleveland, employed 26 people and served several high profile accounts, including Caterpillar’s Lift Truck and Self-Guided Vehicle divisions, Action Auto Rental, Pioneer Gloves, National Floor Covering Consumer Association, Bank One regionally and others.

The loss of a large piece of business exacted its toll in 1989. Innis Maggiore Olson was forced to retrench laying off two-thirds of its staff and closing down the Cleveland office. But, within months, a group of LTV Steel associates bought the troubled steelmaker’s Massillon-based bar division, named it Republic Engineered Steels, and hired Innis Maggiore as agency of record. Republic’s growth as a company and marketer enabled the agency to rebound dramatically, and to leverage its expertise into a number of other accounts.

In 1990, Innis retired, Olson went his own way, Dick and John Maggiore became the agency’s new President and Executive Vice President, and dropping the name Olson, Innis Maggiore became a Group. Over the next several years, and under new direction, the agency evolved into a fully-integrated marketing communications firm and had a fast growing reputation for in-depth strategic planning on top of its recognized creative achievements.

The agency’s most dramatic growth began in the mid-1990’s. Republic went public in 1994. In 1996, Aultman Health Foundation, the Canton area’s premier healthcare provider, signed on with the agency and quickly became a high-volume account. The following year, Innis Maggiore beat a number of leading Ohio agencies to win Oasis Floral Products, a Kent-based national distributor of floral foam and other products. Several regional accounts flocked to the agency during the mid to late 1990’s.

In 1998, the agency merged with Monter Creative Design, a North Canton graphic design shop, and named that agency’s founder and president, Jeff Monter, as its creative director. Billings in 1998 were more than double those of 1996 levels.

To address its rapid growth, the agency expanded into new offices in mid-1999.

In mid 1999, John Maggiore left the agency and three new vice presidents and principals were named.

Over the years, the agency has added offices in Cleveland, Youngstown, New York City, London, Amsterdam, Shanghai, Beijing, Tokyo, Delhi and in late 2010, São Paulo.

As of 2013, the agency is helmed by Dick Maggiore, president and CEO; Lorraine Kessler, VP of Client Services; Jeff Monter, VP of Creative Services and Creative Director; and Chuck Innis, chairman.

Innis Maggiore’s commitment to the practice of positioning is the inspiration for Jack Trout’s 2’008 book, “In Search of the Obvious: The Antidote for Today's Marketing Mess — New Jersey. John Wiley & Sons. October 2008.[1]
