Early Life Struggle, Education and Contribution to the Life of UnderPrivileged:
Dr. Umanath Shetty was born to a of Agricultural Family. He has completed his primary education with marginal marginal score, due to confusion about continuation of the education he has got late admission to high school at neighboring village Kurady almost 3 months later, by that time almost 25% of the 8th standard portions covered/completed by other students and he was called by the Hosabha (New Comer) by some teachers and students instead of his actual name beacause late entry. Since he has passed out from previous class with very marginal score in 2nd attempt, it was very difficult for him to pickup the study, The Head Master cum Chairman of the school Mr. Seetharam Shetty was taking English Classes for 8th standard students and during his class he has identified this boy’s efforts to speak English and also write answers to English Questions by making his own sentences which has not been seen with other students by then he encouraged him. Due to this encouragement he has slowly started to pickup in all other subjects and started showing better performances year by year.
The encouragement of the Head of the institution made him not only to study well in schools but also energized him to participate in all extra-curricular activities of the school. He has contested for the position of Student Union General Secretary of the High school and when opponents having lot of groups for canvassing and spending money for hosting parties for students he neither spent money nor had people around him to canvass and he was against such factors in the student Union Elections , hence the simple boy alone just appealed to the students of all the classes in the last day of the election to vote for him, perhaps the simplicity and his honesty has own hearts of young students and surprisingly students of the school voted for him and he has elected as the General Secretary of the Student Union with highest margin of votes ever recorded.
Pre- University Education-A Turning Point
The life of the Young boy has turned when he has stepped in to National Pre- University College in the year 1989. The Principal of the College Mr. B. Seetharam Shetty in his Political Science Class was very much impressed for his knowledge in Political science, in addition he is one of the well disciplined students in the college and due to his honesty, truthfulness and discipline he has become a Role Model in the College and liked by all the lecturers of the college and students of the college started calling him as Ghandhi because of these qualities. He used to walk every day home to college almost 10 to 12 km per day and used to reach class before all other students. One day there was a pick and speech competition in the college since he has not participated in such kind of competitions earlier he was unwilling to participate but some of the students forced him to participate in it and accordingly in the last moment he has agreed t participate and he got a Topic on Role of a Students in Building a Nation and he spoke in such a way that the Students and the Lecturers gathered surprised his knowledge and vision about the nation and impressed with the speech students hugged him. The programme was organized by Mr. Ram Bhat- English Lecturer who himself was a great orator was highly impressed for the hidden talents of the students and appreciated the vision of the young boy for a nation. After this his participation has become regular in colleges. He was nominated for the position General Secretary of Vivekananda Yuva Sangha in the college and during his term lot of programmes were organized to spread the message of Swami Vivekananda and he was the Best Out Going Students of the College and even after 20 years even today he meets Bold text Mr. B. Seetharam Shetty with great Gratitude to him.
Involvement in Saksharatha Andholan:
He was actively involved in Saksharatha Andholana programme during his Pre- University study time and made several neighbouring women literate under this programme.
Contributions and Achievements:
First time in the history of Karnataka Formed the Association of Sexually Exploited Women's in Bangalore and same has been registered in the year 2001 under Karnataka Societies Registration Act to give legal Sanctity. The members of this Association have been trained to take care of the welfare of the members of the same community. At present the Association's activities extended to whole of Bangalore with two major Regional Offices in Bangalore with more than 2000 members. The members of this team has been trained on Project Management and presently running several projects in Bangalore City.
Career Guidance and counselling: Free Career Guidance services provided to students and counselling services for General Public in leisure hours.
Legal support and Legal Counselling : Legal counselling and support provided to underprivileged sections of the people at Free of cost
