Profanity in the Czech language, like in most other languages, is largely rooted in taboo topics, such as sex or excretion of bodily waste.
Historical change
[edit]Czech profanity in use has changed throughout history according to what social values were considered important at the time such as religious sanctity and became less profane as the related value lost importance.
In general, religious profanity is in contemporary Czech seen as the least offensive. [1]
Common and notable profanities
[edit]- Prdel; means "arse". Often used in the sentence "jdi do prdele!", which translates to "go elsewhere/away!"
- Vůl; , more vulgar word for "mate" or "fellow", can also be used as an insult. The word directly translates to "ox".
- Kurva; , a term shared with other Slavic languages, which is a more vulgar term for . It should be noted that prostitution is not illegal in Czechia. [add external sources][2]
- Hovno; means "shit". [3]
- Píča , having meaning equivalent to "cunt". Notable for having a symbol exclusive to Czechia and Slovakia.[4][5]
Legality
[edit]Under Czech law, vulgarity can become a cause for a legal dispute If a person causes another to come to harm, feel harmed or endangers the moral development of a child because of vulgar language. Czechia is under European law and anti-discriminatory laws, any vulgarity which is based on another's race, gender, sexuality or religion are prosecuted under stricter guidelines and faces harsher punishment. In Czechia there exists an official institute dedicated to monitoring, controlling and censoring swearing in public broadcasts, Rada pro rozhlasové a televizní vysílání. However it has no ability to penalize offenders and is only able to give out official warnings.
