Birds of the Indian region

There is a fair amount of primary research literature (not to be confused with primary sources) that is hidden, especially to Internet researchers. There are several field guides and one handbook for the birds of the Indian region and these works often lack inline citations to original sources ostensibly for want of space. Nearly all the recent bird guides are written without sufficient field effort, incomplete literature review and are meant mostly for quick identification by tourists. They do not cover ecological and local cultural aspects that are important for so many purposes, most importantly conservation. The idea here (and hopefully numerous others will join in as they have done in other parts of the world) is to bring some balance, review the available literature and make Wikipedia articles useful for serious researchers.

The ticks indicates that key sources have been examined and incorporated into the Wikipedia article. There are always unpublished theses, expensive books (like the HBW) and new research that may still need to be looked up. Those without ticks have not been reviewed. Regardless of the ticks, all articles can do with additional copy-editing, sourcing and updates. The species list below begins with the commoner birds although some rare and enigmatic birds jump the priority queue.

Persons adding images (especially overenthusiastic Indians) should do so with care. They should have some idea of what their picture depicts and be reasonable. There are too many images of common species and adding another is hardly helpful. This is not a photography contest and photographs lacking an possible encyclopaedic interpretation are best retained in a gallery on Wikimedia Commons.
