Atrophaneura is a genus of mostly black-winged butterflies from the family Papilionidae belonging to the Troidini tribe, sometimes referred to as batwings. Formerly this genus contained three sub-genera: Byasa, Losaria and Pachliopta. Now elevated to genera of their own. Together, they are known as the red-bodied swallowtails and are generally found in Asia.

Description

[edit]

Simple, strong-coloured eggs. As with the other three genera, the larvae feed on Aristolochia and Thottea, featuring vivid but dark, prominent tubercles. Chrysalids are camouflaged to look like a dead leaf or twig and the adults are conspicuous, using aposematism to warn predators of their toxic nature.
