Nathan Joseph Autumnborn Quiver is a fictional character in the 'The Legend of Jerry Quiver' video game franchise, created by indie game developer, Dominic Ford. He is shown to play the archetype of the central protagonist of The Legend of Jerry Quiver: Rise of The Dominion.

Concept and Creation

[edit]

2015

[edit]

Dominic Ford created Nathan while experimenting with the game engine RPG Maker VX Ace (Published by Kadokawa Games and Enterbrain) that he had bought to initially make a simple indie game. Originally, Dominic wanted to create a video game that used his own authentic characters at the time, however, Dominic did not have the necessary software to make the characters (and would not until he purchased Game Character Hub), so he ended up using the boy character sprite and face from the standard RPG Maker VX Ace (known as Yellow, named after the boy's blonde hair). In the early stages of The Legend of Jerry Quiver: Rise of The Dominion, Yellow was used at the time as a 'substitute' for the protagonist character, and the focus was to make an idea and sketch an quick plot. However, Dominic decided to resort to an idea he made in 2015 which was an unfinished book called The Legend of Jerry Quiver which centered around Jerry Quiver trying to save his childhood friend - or in the Rise of The Dominion, his future wife, - Alice Arrow. Dominic decided to take this idea and make the game a sequel, saying "When your bedroom wall is covered with a massive story, why not make it even bigger?"

In early development of the game, Dominic decided to make Yellow Jerry Quiver's son, saying "I don't know if Jerry's gonna be in this, but what I do know is that the title is going to make sense.", making Dominic decide that Yellow needed an appearance change to match Jerry's original concept art (considering that Jerry was brown haired and had green eyes rather than blue). Yellow kept his image for a long time in development, until he had an appearance change to a slightly more french look, with Yellow wearing a flat cap, but also wearing brown clothing and a long cloak. However, Dominic had only required the face set for the appearance, and so his appearance soon changed back to the original boy sprite.

2016

[edit]

It was near this moment when Dominic bought Game Character Hub, with Dominic saying, "When I got it, it was like I'd bought a Lego set." Once Dominic had bought Game Character Hub, he started experimenting with the generator pieces to try and make his first ever sprite: Yellow's second appearance. However, it was an utter failure, with Dominic saying, "They were just, chippy! Like, they would jump out of your screen and cut your eyes just by standing sideways!", which might explain why his appearance changed back to the original boy sprite. But Dominic tried to make a sprite for Yellow continuously for Yellow's second appearance, until he decided that he needed to not only make sprites with Game Character Hub but also face sets. This however proved itself successful. Dominic then started to make face sets and sprites for other characters in the game such as Grant Brown and Melanie Star, and then turned his attention back to Yellow and focused on making an original appearance.

Nathan's third appearance would be the last major appearance change he would have. After Dominic decided he wouldn't stick to the concepts, saying "The book was never finished, so why not experiment a bit?", Nathan had a substantial appearance change. He would now have long, swirling black hair, with orange eyes (Dominic stated, "At the third appearance change, he was still called Yellow, so I gave him orange eyes to symbolize that."). Nathan would now wear black clothing all over with a black scarf and brown dungarees. "Making Nathan was one of the game's greatest leaps since that Isabelle down sprite I had to make for a scene." Dominic states, "and when I made Nathan, I knew that I could make a game that was made by a paintbrush."
