The Drug Lord

A 2008 amateur film production, starring Sidhartha Shankar in the lead role as the protagonist. The film has received more than a thousand views on Youtube, and is known to be a very campy film, where the plot holds very little meaning, except for it's underlining message about the risk of drug use. The plot of the movie is fairly simple. Daniel (Sidhartha Shankar) is leading a quiet life, until he finds a new problem at his doorstep: the arrival of his friend, William (Bill Anderson), who confesses his drug addiction after having had a break-up with his girlfriend of three years. William is paying crack to a notorious drug lord named Stavros (Nick Doyle), known for his brutal assaults.

When William fails to pay the drug money, Stavros tries to make sure that his client pays the consequences! However, when Daniel gets involved, things start to take a nasty shape. It’s up to Daniel to subdue the drug boss and ensure the safety of his friend, before hell breaks loose!

The Drug Lord is a hilarious movie, much like a sitcom, where the plot is so bizarre and so over-the-top, that one realises whether there was any point demonstrated throughout the picture. While the start of the film commences promisingly, it is during the movie that the entire plot gets derailed, which leaves us an anticlimax. Daniel's mission in the movie is to safeguard his friend William and get him out of his drug habit, while in the meantime, he has to battle his enemy, who is out to get both of them. The scenario, which is woven around these three principal characters reads more like comedy than a serious drama, and the action, which is made to be dramatic, is exaggerated and zany, and one wonders why there was any need for violence at all just for the sake of it.

The fighting and stunts perfomed led to deep waters. On one occassion, when Nick Doyle and Sidhartha Shankar were doing the fighting sequence at night, it aroused public speculation and the police were later called in to investigate the apparent "punch-on" that was occurring. And another occassion that backfired, was when Nick Doyle accidently broke a chandelair in Shankar's house, when he raised a chair to hit Sidhartha Shankar when they were fighting; a sequence that was later used as actual footage for The Drug Lord (2008). Overall, the film is a splendid piece of slapstick comedy, which puts it in the same category as The Three Stooges.

The Lion's Den

A 2008 amateur film production starring Sidhartha Shankar, this is a direct sequel to The Drug Lord, where the eponymous villain returns to battle his adversary. It featured a whole host of new acting talents, as well the reprisal of Bill Anderson and Nick Doyle in their respective roles. Principal cinematographer, Steve Ramsie, features in a cameo role as an undercover cop.

Daniel is hired by undercover cop, Inspector Ali, to track down notorious drug trafficker, Denham Doyle. But meanwhile, the drug lord has his eye on Daniel and tries to have him assaulted on various occassions, which are foiled by the all-powerful Daniel. Daniel is on the verge of trying to track down the drug lord's wares and capture him; meanwhile the drug lord is having difficulties, when two of his henchmen (played by Fraser Lee & Nick Smith) demand a pay rise to which the drug lord refuses, thus leading to a bitter feud, in which they threaten to expose him. But as one of the henchmen tries to sell Daniel information, he is shot by a passerby car and later sent to the ambulance. Daniel knows it's the work of the drug lord and decides to take matters into his hands.

As he sets out for the drug lord's lair, he encounters the second henchmen, who reveals that the drug lord was dealing in some new drugs called "sugar", to which he gives Daniel a sample as evidence. Daniel departs to the villain's den, and on entering there, encounters Denham Doyle, who reveals himself to be none other than Stavros. Stavros and his henchmen try to escape, with Daniel running in pursuit. Eventually, Daniel catches up with them and beats the hell out of them, before the notorious drug lord is captured by the police.

The Lion's Den is a superior sequel to The Drug Lord, in that it focused more on characterization and plot, rather than a fifteen minute film that contains over-the-top action elements that don't seem necessary to the plot. The movie is a serious drama that is well directed and edited, and which features several acting talents.

The Street Warrior

A forthcoming film that is due for release on Youtube sometime in March 2009. This film is expected to be the last of the Avenger films ever to be made, and will be very action-oriented. The story basically has Daniel pitted against a new enemy who takes over Doyle's drug business, and establishing himself as the new drug lord. The new drug lord therefore wants to finish off what Doyle failed to do: kill Daniel! Prepare for more action as Daniel aka the Avenger strikes once more!!
