"Young May Moon is a British military marching tune. It has been used by various British Army regiments and police forces. It was created by the 45th Foot as they marched towards the Storming of Badajoz.

History

[edit]

"Young May Moon" came about as the quick march of the 45th Foot regiment as they were on a forced march to make it to the storming of Badajoz in the Peninsular War. They played it as they arrived at the battle and stormed the breach.[1] The tune gained popularity during the Napoleonic Wars and was used as the regimental march of the Norfolk Regiment until 1881 when "Rule, Britannia" was adopted instead.[2]
