Man-in-the-Middle Attacks (MITM)

[edit]

Man-in-the-middle Attacks involve a malicious attacker trying to intercept, surveil and/or modify communications between two parties by spoofing one or both party's identities and injecting themselves in-between.[1]

Types of MITM Attacks

  • IP Address Spoofing, is where the attacker hijacks routing protocols to reroute the targets traffic to a vulnerable network node for traffic interception or injection.
  • Message Spoofing (via Email, SMS or OTT Messaging), is where the attacker spoofs the identity or carrier service while the target is using messaging protocols like Email, SMS or OTT (IP-based) messaging apps. The attacker can then monitor conversations, launch social attacks or trigger zero-day-vulnerabilities to allow for further attacks.
  • WiFi SSID Spoofing, is where the attacker simulates a WIFI base station SSID to capture and modify internet traffic and transactions. The attacker can also use local network addressing and reduced network defenses to penetrate the target's firewall by breaching known vulnerabilities. Sometimes known as a Pineapple attack thanks to a popular device. See also Malicious association.
  • DNS Spoofing, is where attackers hijack domain name assignments to redirect traffic to systems under the attackers control, in order to surveil traffic or launch other attacks.
  • SSL hijacking, typically coupled with another media-level MITM attack, the attacker spoofs the SSL authentication and encryption protocol by way of Certificate Authority injection in order to decrypt, surveil & modify traffic. See also TLS Interception

Political views

[edit]

Kent has been characterized as a far-right politician.[2][3]

Globalism and Populism

[edit]

Kent has labeled his political philosophy as "inclusive populism", with a spokesman stating that it "rejects racism and bigotry" while promoting an "America First agenda".[4]

Fiscal Policy

[edit]

Joe Kent proposes using the house appropriations process to strictly limit federal spending. "first off we need to stop this out of control spending"[5], Kent stated during his 2022 congressional debate.

Immigration

[edit]

Kent favors strict restrictions on illegal immigration including penalties to restrict citizenship & job eligibility

Energy Policy

[edit]

Kent endorses reducing restrictions on drilling and restoring the Keystone pipeline in order to reduce energy costs & inflation [5]

Non-Interventionism

[edit]

Kent considers himself a non-interventionist, citing his military experience and the death of his wife. He said that he lost many friends and his wife due to "our ruling class - Republicans and Democrats - consistently [having] lied to the American people to keep us engaged in wars abroad".[6]

Local Issues

[edit]

Kent opposes replacing the I5 bridge[7], as well as tolls which would predominantly affect members of his congressional district. “Oregon really wants to put tolls on their sides. You really have to ask yourself, how many times do we have to pay for this thing?”[8], Kent said. [7] [8]

Election Integrity

[edit]

Kent made false claims that the 2020 presidential election was stolen from Donald Trump a focus of his 2022 campaign. He labeled the perpetrators of the January 6 United States Capitol attack as "political prisoners" and spoke at a rally in defense of them organized by his top adviser. He supports impeaching Joe Biden and - in the wake of the FBI search of Mar-a-Lago - Merrick Garland.[9]

Covid 19 mRNA Vaccines

[edit]

In a September 2022 debate against Perez, Kent said that he was unvaccinated and that the COVID-19 vaccines are "experimental gene therapy".[10][11]

WP:USERTALKSTOP & WP:RUCD as they are currently worded seem to balance dispute resolution via user-talk-page while banning wp:harassment. I think we should clarify the harassment bar a bit better. e.g. "

If admin's decide to enforce WP:USERTALKSTOP as an instant-block -- it would be best to codify the rules more explicitly among the various dispute-resolution policies. How long does the WP:USERTALKSTOP instant block window last? Years?

Making WP:USERTALKSTOP an instant-block also has the unintended consequence that the other party will likely reciprocate. That policy will result in shutting down important comms channels and trigger more escalation, which WP:RUCD seems to try to temper.

We should be encouraging disputes to be resolved at the lowest level possible.
