Jérôme Sans (born) is a director of contemporary arts institutions and curator living in Paris and Beijing. Sans began his career in the early 80s as one of the first independent curators in France. He co-founded and directed with Nicolas Bourriaud the Palais de Tokyo from 1999 until January 2006. Mr. Sans directed the BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art in Gateshead, England from 2006 to 2008.

In March 2008, Sans began his directorship at Ullens Center for Contemporary Art (UCCA) located in Beijing. After leaving his directorial post at UCCA in 2012, Sans, along with partners Morgan Morris, Philip Qu, Isabelle Lin and Jean Marc Decrop, set out to establish his cultural consulting firm, Perfect Crossovers.

Now splitting his time between Beijing and Paris, Sans is also the global cultural curator for Le Méridien Hotels & Resorts, artistic director of the French urban development project, Rives de Saône-River Movie, creative director of L'Officiel Art magazine. He remains on the advisory board for UCCA, as well as at the French art foundation, Sam Art Projects. While not curating, Sans plays in his rock-electro band, Liquid Architecture. Having released their debut album, “Revolution is Over” under the French label, Naïve, in 2006. In 2010, Liquid Architecture released their second label, “Love to Love” under the Chinese-indie label, Modern Sky.

Jérôme Sans has curated over 300 exhibitions around the world, such as the Taipei Bienniale (Taiwan, 2000), My Home is Yours / Your Home is Mine co-curated with Hou Hanru (Tokyo Opera City, 2001), Contemporary Art Biennial (Lyon, France, 2005), 2006 Nuit Blanche (Paris, 2006) Paris, and It’s Not Only Rock’n’Roll Baby (Bozar Brussels, 2000 and Milan Triennial 2013).

Sans has also authored several books including Araki(Taschen, 2001), Au Sujet de Daniel Buren (Flammarion, 1998), In The Arab World Now (Galerie Enrico Navarra,2008). Additionally, he contributed to a series of interviews with Jonas Mekas that became the book, Just Like A Shadow (Steidl, 2000).

Sans co-directed and started in the documentary on Jonas Mekas, one of the most emblematic filmmakers of American Avant-Guard Cinema. The film, I Am Not A Filmmaker (2012), was shown in numerous films festivals around the world. He is preparing another film about the artist Kenneth Anger.

He is currently working on a series of pocket books that incorporate interviews with artists and architects, to be published by BlueKingfisher Lmt. The first of which is titled, Hands Grenades From my Heart: Kendell Geers.

Sans has also guest lectured at Saint Martin’s College of Art and Design.
