Please comment on the following[edit]

Comments from all editors welcome These are links I'd like to add to either the "external links" or "further reading" sections of various Wikipedia articles. I have included some commentary on each link explaining why I think it should be added. I look forward to your comments and suggestions. Thanks!

Generally, things should only go in "references" if they have been used to write the text, and ideally page citations are given, or if citations are added to existing text from a source that confirms it. Books that have not yet been used can be put below references in a "Further reading" section - probably best for these - and we hope that they will later be used and cited and so moved up to "references". Or they can go in external links. If they are in References or Further reading a proper citation style with author etc should be used - external links are often less formal and detailed. General references or "bibliography" sections where it isn't clear what has been used should be avoided. Johnbod (talk) 01:37, 20 September 2012 (UTC)

THE DOWNLOADING ISSUE HAS BEEN RESOLVED Johnbod. Thanks for your patience on this - let me know if you have any issues. WilliamDigiCol (talk) 13:38, 18 June 2014 (UTC)

Ok, thanks! I'll try to catch up over the w/e. Do you know if there is video of your NY presentation? Johnbod (talk) 20:48, 18 June 2014 (UTC)
Supposedly there will be but I haven't seen one yet. I'll let you know if I come across it. WilliamDigiCol (talk) 13:38, 19 June 2014 (UTC)

New Editor Helping Out: Recently a new person has been helping out here at Watson with some of this linking. His page is here User:AWCDigiCol/Working page 2014, and it's set up similar to this. I have been leaving him comments on his work, though I encourage any editor who would like to comment to please do so. We have also created a GLAM Wiki Project, which is accessible here Wikipedia:GLAM/TJWL. Thanks! WilliamDigiCol (talk) 18:34, 21 October 2014 (UTC)

Some added, to check further[edit]

Template:Library resources box[edit]

Johnbod - we recently posted our library's OPAC through this FTL service. Basically, it makes our OPAC searchable through Online Books Page and WP articles that have the "library resources box" posted in it (here is one for things about whatever/whoever the WP page is focused on Template:Library resources about and here is one for things by whoever the page is aboutTemplate:Library resources by). Anyway, currently most of the WP pages I've found with this "resources in your library" box in it are literary, and I was hoping to begin adding it to various artists' pages. For instance, for Picasso it could be (on right):

It would say "Pablo Picasso" at the top of this box, not About WilliamDigiCol. Please let me know what your thoughts are. (Also note that once you've selected "your" library, it takes you directly to works by or about the person in your library's catalog. Before selecting a library, however, it takes you to a longer list of libraries whose various catalogs you can search.) WilliamDigiCol (talk) 15:28, 31 July 2013 (UTC)

These links were added after consulting with other Wikipedia editors in the above section. Those interactions can be viewed below.

Chinese art[edit]

PLEASE COMMENT ON THE ABOVE CATALOG: I would also like to add to: Buddhist art; Chinese ceramics; Boris Marshak (one of the authors); Tang dynasty art; Ancient Chinese glass. Any other suggestions welcome. WilliamDigiCol (talk) 19:52, 21 July 2014 (UTC)

COMMENT: I would also like to add to: Buddhist art; Yungang Grottoes; Longmen Grottoes; Mogao Caves; Dazu Rock Carvings. WilliamDigiCol (talk) 21:18, 3 March 2014 (UTC)

I'll look into this one in more detail. I recently used it as a reference at Group of glazed pottery luohans from Yixian #s 23a & b.. Johnbod (talk) 00:38, 4 March 2014 (UTC)
Add: Chinese Buddhism, Emperor Xiaowen of Northern Wei #6, Guanyin - many representations, plus what you had. Johnbod (talk) 02:03, 9 March 2014 (UTC)

Egyptian temple[edit]

COMMENTS: I would also like to add to: Sacred architecture; Ancient Egyptian religion (too much of a stretch?); Cult image (no ELs or anything in Further Reading); Ancient Egyptian architecture; Egyptology; Art of ancient Egypt; Hierarchical proportion (could be useful, and not much on WP); Amarna art; Egyptian hieroglyphs; Ancient art; Block statue. WilliamDigiCol (talk) 17:52, 8 October 2014 (UTC)

All should be ok, though I admit I haven't had time to check each. Sorry for the delay. Johnbod (talk) 00:49, 22 October 2014 (UTC)

Paul Signac[edit]

COMMENT: I would also like to add to: Neo-impressionism; Pointillism; Paul Adam (French novelist) (not much on WP, discussed throughout cat); Arsène Alexandre; Charles Angrand; Émile Bernard; Lucie Cousturier; Henri-Edmond Cross (lots on him); Félix Fénéon (hardly anything on WP - this discusses him quite a bit); Armand Guillaumin; Lucien Pissarro (not a ton on WP); Théo van Rysselberghe. WilliamDigiCol (talk) 20:37, 14 July 2014 (UTC)

Ok to all these. Johnbod (talk) 15:40, 13 August 2014 (UTC)

Vincent van Gogh[edit]

COMMENT: This was published a while back, but it was an extremely important exhibition in the US, so I thought it would be worth adding it to the Van Gogh and the following (many of them don't have much, obviously some of them have pretty good articles): Sunflowers (Van Gogh series); Cafe Terrace at Night; The Roulin Family; The Starry Night; Portrait of Dr. Gachet; The Town Hall at Auvers; Olive Trees (Van Gogh series); The Zouave; Road with Cypress and Star; L'Arlésienne (painting); Almond Blossoms; Irises (painting); The Potato Eaters; Early works of Vincent van Gogh; Portraits by Vincent van Gogh; Montmartre (Van Gogh series); Wheat Fields (Van Gogh series); Drawings, water-colours and prints by Vincent van Gogh; Peasant Character Studies (Van Gogh series); Self-portraits by Vincent van Gogh; Still life paintings by Vincent van Gogh (Netherlands). WilliamDigiCol (talk) 16:01, 24 July 2014 (UTC)

Ok to all; there are a lot of ELs on the main article though. The entries on the individual exhibits are just basic catalogue entries, but the long biographical/critical text is useful. Johnbod (talk) 15:45, 13 August 2014 (UTC)

Artemisia Gentileschi[edit]

COMMENT: I am going to update citations and links in a few of these, and then would like to add them to the rest: Orazio Gentileschi (added link to reference - left "source" citation to MMA Pubs); Massimo Stanzione (added to existing citation); David with the Head of Goliath (Massimo Stanzione) (updated); Giovan Battista Cavagna (updated); Palazzo Spada (cat no 52); Cristofano Allori (no ELs); Giuseppe Cesari (not a ton on WP); Giovanni Baglione (no ELs); Agostino Beltrano (no ELs); Jacques Blanchard (not much on WP); Hendrick van den Broeck (no ELs); Battistello Caracciolo (no ELs); Caravaggisti (though we have a couple other cats up); Utrecht Caravaggism; Agostino Carracci (not much on WP); Ludovico Carracci (not much on WP); Bernardo Cavallino; Alphonsus Ciacconius; Cigoli (no ELs); Michel Corneille the Elder (no ELs); Domenichino; Adam Elsheimer; Domenico Fiasella; Paolo Domenico Finoglia; Lavinia Fontana (no ELs); Anastasio Fontebuoni (no ELs); Francesco Gentileschi; Antiveduto Grammatica; Francesco Guarino; Giovanni Francesco Guerrieri; Laurent de La Hyre; Giovanni Lanfranco; Aurelio Lomi; Bartolomeo Manfredi; Claude Mellan; Jean Monier; Pacecco De Rosa; Onofrio Palumbo; Domenico Passignano; Giovanni Battista Pozzi; Scipione Pulzone; Guido Reni; Cristoforo Roncalli; Agostino Tassi. WilliamDigiCol (talk) 16:40, 13 August 2014 (UTC)

All ok Johnbod (talk) 17:02, 13 August 2014 (UTC)

Luigi Palma di Cesnola[edit]

COMMENT: I would also like to add to: Ancient history of Cyprus; Stele (nos. 457-489)(There's only one other EL and it's a dead link). I will look over this again soon but would be grateful for any suggestions.WilliamDigiCol (talk) 20:44, 7 July 2014 (UTC)

Ok Johnbod (talk) 23:23, 7 July 2014 (UTC)
I would also like to add to: Stone sculpture; Stone carving. That's about all I've got - I'm kind of surprised there's not a "Cypriot Art" article - perhaps that's something we can work on here. WilliamDigiCol (talk) 19:18, 14 July 2014 (UTC)

COMMENT: 7 guides - useful resources. WilliamDigiCol (talk) 14:41, 20 June 2014 (UTC)

Sure Johnbod (talk) 22:20, 20 June 2014 (UTC)

Roosevelt Island[edit]

COMMENT: It's kind of a fun catalog. WilliamDigiCol (talk) 13:13, 8 August 2014 (UTC)

Age of Enlightenment[edit]

COMMENT: I would also like to add to (all artists listed have at least 1 work in cat that is accompanied by a brief biographical sketch - many of them don't have that much about them on WP): Giovanni Paolo Panini (not much on WP); Pompeo Batoni; Gaetano Gandolfi (no external links); Anton Raphael Mengs; Perseus with the Head of Medusa (the cat features Canova's famous sculpture); Antonio Canova (more info in this cat than some of the EL - such as the flikr photo of the Perseus sculpture - this has a reproduction of the sculpture as well as a bit of description); Jean-Baptiste Greuze (only has 1 EL); Louis-Claude Vassé (no EL); Pierre Julien (only one EL); Augustin Pajou (no EL); The Death of Socrates (featured in cat); Portrait of Antoine-Laurent Lavoisier and his wife (in cat); Pierre-Paul Prud'hon (only 1 EL); The Colossus (painting) (sketch featured in cat); Lansdowne House (the dining room is in the cat - not much on WP); Joseph Nollekens; Salisbury Cathedral from the Bishop's Grounds (featured in cat); Benjamin Wyon; Ville d'Avray (painting) (in cat - hardly anything on WP); Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux (surprisingly little on WP - this features his most famous sculpture - Ugolino & Sons); Woman with a Parrot. WilliamDigiCol (talk) 16:06, 3 May 2014 (UTC)

Ok to all those; I will look at it later for things to add. Johnbod (talk) 17:33, 3 May 2014 (UTC)
Actually I can't get the download for this one to work - please check. Johnbod (talk) 23:33, 3 May 2014 (UTC)
We are having some technical issues with larger items in CONTENTdm (our CMS) which we are currently working on resolving. I am going to hold off on adding links to effected items until this issue is resolved. WilliamDigiCol (talk) 14:22, 6 May 2014 (UTC)
We just heard back from our CMS support and all items over 20 MB are having download issues at present. This problem will be resolved in their next update, which is due out in June. For now, a temporary work-around is to choose to "print" the item, and then when it is in the print screen you can select to instead save it as a PDF. Right now this is the best work-around we've got. Let me know if you have any questions. WilliamDigiCol (talk) 15:43, 6 May 2014 (UTC)
That doesn't seem to be working for me either - I can't even get to a place where I can choose to print. For now let's go with the ones that are ok, & I'll revist later to see if there are things to add. Johnbod (talk) 21:30, 25 May 2014 (UTC)
Added links to all the above - if you get a chance Johnbod let me know if there are any others you'd recommend. Thanks!WilliamDigiCol (talk) 20:57, 25 June 2014 (UTC)
sure, won't be very soon though. Johnbod (talk) 21:36, 25 June 2014 (UTC)

COMMENT: I would also like to add to (there's not much on most of these artists: Chinese painting; Chinese calligraphy; Xu Beihong; Chang Dai-chien; Yu Youren; Qi Baishi; Shen Yinmo; Wang Yun-wu; Puru (artist). WilliamDigiCol (talk) 20:19, 7 July 2014 (UTC)

COMMENT: I'd also like to add to: African art; Osanyin staff (added the link to the citation); African sculpture; Culture of Ivory Coast; Senufo people; Bijago art; Baga people; Bassa people (Liberia) (not much on WP);Kissi people (not much on WP); Baoulé people; Akan art; Yoruba art; Traditional African masks; Kwele people (not much on WP); Kongo ivories; Songye people (not much on WP).WilliamDigiCol (talk) 21:09, 10 March 2014 (UTC)

Ok to the more specific ones. This would be link # 5 added to African art, not sure about sculpture & masks. In an ideal world there would be a single link to an MMA page listing all the African art books you have. Don't know if that's possible. I'll take a look when I get a chance. Johnbod (talk) 15:22, 4 April 2014 (UTC)

Ernst Herzfeld[edit]

COMMENT: Currently the collection is small, but it is an ongoing, active project that will be consistently added to over the next couple of years. It already has some neat stuff, and it will just continue to grow as time goes on. WilliamDigiCol (talk) 18:35, 28 May 2014 (UTC)

Ok, though the Freer & Smithsonian are already there. Johnbod (talk) 22:23, 20 June 2014 (UTC)

History of clothing and textiles[edit]

COMMENT: I would also like to add to: Textile; Textile arts; History of clothing and textiles; Timeline of clothing and textiles technology; History of silk; K'o-ssu; Silk Road (too broad?). Any other suggestions welcome. WilliamDigiCol (talk) 18:05, 4 June 2014 (UTC)

All but textile i think, plus add Chinese clothing. Johnbod (talk) 22:29, 20 June 2014 (UTC)

David Whitehouse[edit]

COMMENT: I would also like to add to: Robert H. Brill (already added to the pre-existing citation on this page); Islamic glass; Islamic art (too broad?); Glass; Hedwig glass; Gilding; History of glass; Art glass (?). That's all I've got - other suggestions welcome. WilliamDigiCol (talk) 18:06, 14 May 2014 (UTC)

  • All ok except art glass I think (that's modern really). To check over after tech update. Johnbod (talk) 21:37, 25 May 2014 (UTC)

Andean textiles[edit]

COMMENT: I would also like to add to: Cuzco School (lots); Andean Baroque; Viceroyalty of Peru (too broad? the catalog focuses almost entirely on this period/place); Upper Peru (talked about a fair amount in the catalog and there is basically nothing on WP); Culture of Peru. WilliamDigiCol (talk) 21:18, 3 March 2014 (UTC)

To check out. Isn't Quito School covered? Surely it is. Johnbod (talk) 00:40, 4 March 2014 (UTC)
well let's go with those anyway. Johnbod (talk) 21:21, 25 May 2014 (UTC)

COMMENT: I would also like to add to (all artists featured in the cat): Iranian art; Reza Abbasi (4, # 32,33); Safavid art (largely works from this period). WilliamDigiCol (talk) 18:48, 16 April 2014 (UTC)

Ok to all these. Added some exhibit #s above. Also Persian miniature - plenty have some colour. Johnbod (talk) 23:51, 3 May 2014 (UTC)

Trade literature[edit]

COMMENT: We have begun digitizing a number of trade catalogs - 28 are available so far, but there are a few hundred that will eventually go online. It is an ongoing, active project that will be consistently added to over the next couple of years. Anyway, I looked through some of the other links in this section and our offerings are better than many, and certainly will be better than most as we continue to add to it. WilliamDigiCol (talk) 18:27, 28 May 2014 (UTC)

Certainly Johnbod (talk) 20:48, 18 June 2014 (UTC)

COMMENT: sort of interesting rare old millinery book and there's not a ton on the WP page WilliamDigiCol (talk) 17:10, 3 May 2014 (UTC)

Ok Johnbod (talk) 17:30, 3 May 2014 (UTC)

Ashurnasirpal II[edit]

Vatican Museums[edit]

COMMENT: I'd also like to add to: Laocoön and His Sons; St. Peter's Basilica; Gardens of Vatican City; Vatican City; Apostolic Palace; Vatican Library; Seven Pilgrim Churches of Rome; Basilica of Saint Lawrence outside the Walls; Santa Croce in Gerusalemme; Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore; Archbasilica of St. John Lateran; Basilica of Saint Paul Outside the Walls; Santuario della Madonna del Divino Amore; Pio Cristiano Museum; Sleeping Ariadne; Belvedere Torso; Augustus of Prima Porta; St. Jerome in the Wilderness (Leonardo); The School of Athens; Sistine Chapel ceiling; Sistine Chapel; Gian Lorenzo Bernini (he's featured quite a bit in the cat); Francesco Mochi; Pietà (Michelangelo); The Creation of Adam; Pinturicchio; Disputation of the Holy Sacrament; The Mass at Bolsena; The Meeting of Leo the Great and Attila; Deliverance of Saint Peter; The Conversion of Saul (Michelangelo); The Last Judgment (Michelangelo); The Crucifixion of St. Peter (Michelangelo); Transfiguration (Raphael); The Entombment of Christ (Caravaggio); Margaritone d'Arezzo; Stefaneschi Triptych; The Deposition (Raphael). (I will add more later - any recommendations would be appreciated) WilliamDigiCol (talk) 19:04, 26 March 2014 (UTC)

Sorry for the delay - I need to go through these, as not many were actually exhibited & many will have lots already. I expect some other objects actually exhibited & not in this list have articles though. Johnbod (talk) 15:17, 4 April 2014 (UTC)
Ok to (added or brought down) Vatican City; Vatican Radio pp 43-46, Saint Peter's tomb pp 51-54, Old St Peter's 51-61; St. Peter's Basilica pp 62-90; Apostolic Palace pp 91-;Sistine Chapel; Raphael Rooms 111-123, Disputation of the Holy Sacrament; The Mass at Bolsena; The Meeting of Leo the Great and Attila; Deliverance of Saint Peter, Borgia Apartments 100-104, Cappella Paolina 128-132, The Conversion of Saul (Michelangelo); Sala Regia (Vatican) 126-127, Gardens of Vatican City 155-164; San Pellegrino in Vaticano 151-2, Sant'Anna dei Palafrenieri 152-3, Vatican Museums 171ff, Pio Cristiano Museum 176-189, Pio Cristiano Museum 224-234, Religious art 234-247 (Ethnographic religious art, a nice global round-up), Raphael Cartoons p 265, Stefaneschi Triptych 251, Vatican Library 280-97;Seven Pilgrim Churches of Rome 310ff;Basilica of Saint Lawrence outside the Walls; Santa Croce in Gerusalemme; Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore; Archbasilica of St. John Lateran; Basilica of Saint Paul Outside the Walls; Catacombs of Rome 351-367 the individual ones with sections & articles in Category:Catacombs of Rome could be added; Palazzo della Cancelleria 370-374, Palazzo di Propaganda Fide 375,Santuario della Madonna del Divino Amore. Gian Lorenzo Bernini - I suppose so; Francesco Mochi - if you say so.

You'll see I've not included many of the individual portable works of art (except Stefaneschi Triptych, the Raphaels etc), which I don't think get enough space for such well-known works, though the pics are good. So I'd say no to these, unless you feel strongly any should go in: Laocoön and His Sons; Sleeping Ariadne; Belvedere Torso; Augustus of Prima Porta; St. Jerome in the Wilderness (Leonardo); The School of Athens (well covered); Sistine Chapel ceiling; Pietà (Michelangelo); The Creation of Adam; Pinturicchio; The Last Judgment (Michelangelo); The Crucifixion of St. Peter (Michelangelo); Transfiguration (Raphael); The Entombment of Christ (Caravaggio); Margaritone d'Arezzo; The Deposition (Raphael).

Maybe better not call it a catalogue - no actual exhibits are referred to. Please specify the individual pages where appropriate, as it's a big book. Phew! Johnbod (talk) 22:56, 4 April 2014 (UTC)

I see that Sleeping Ariadne has nothing online, so lets add that. Johnbod (talk) 12:51, 6 April 2014 (UTC)
  • Hi William and John. I traced your excellent link-adding work back to here and hope you don't mind my commenting. I returned to my Watchlist today and to about 10 of your edits; adding the above to the above. Looks great and I'm glad you did. Had a known you had proposed it here I would have absolutely endorsed it. Keep up the great work! Stalwart111 23:17, 9 April 2014 (UTC)
Thanks! We very much welcome other comments here - you can see how it works, with the new ones up at the top. Johnbod (talk) 23:33, 9 April 2014 (UTC)
For what it's worth, I think adding the same to Gian Lorenzo Bernini was a good idea. Stalwart111 01:52, 10 April 2014 (UTC)
Glad to hear it - thanks so much for your feedback! WilliamDigiCol (talk) 17:59, 11 April 2014 (UTC)

COMMENT: This is a general overview of the history of jewellery that uses works owned by the Museum as examples. I would also like to add to: Adornment; Art jewelry; Brooch (not much on WP, lots of examples); Necklace; Bracelet. WilliamDigiCol (talk) 20:33, 10 February 2014 (UTC)

Ok - it's a bit introductory though; one day might be replaced with some of the weightier tomes you have. Johnbod (talk) 01:35, 2 March 2014 (UTC)

John F. Carlson[edit]

Tea set[edit]

COMMENT: It's a small, basic guide to some stuff in the Museum, but there isn't much on WP so I thought it'd be worth a try. WilliamDigiCol (talk) 20:47, 10 February 2014 (UTC)

Ok Johnbod (talk) 01:35, 2 March 2014 (UTC)

Ok - that will make 4 MMA links at African art, but what the hell. Johnbod (talk) 21:22, 5 February 2014 (UTC)

Sportswear (fashion)[edit]

COMMENT: I would also like to add to (all designers featured prominently in catalog and all have short "profiles"): History of fashion design; Clare Potter; Claire McCardell; Bonnie Cashin; Geoffrey Beene; Bill Blass; Anne Fogarty; Halston; Muriel King; Anne Klein; Vera Maxwell; Valentina (fashion designer); Elizabeth Hawes. COMMENT: I added the link to this article and to a few others that also already had citations to it. I would also like to add to: Lampung (there's a whole section on textiles, plus this WP article is somewhat skimpy); Batik (no external links).WilliamDigiCol (talk) 20:58, 27 January 2014 (UTC)

Ok Johnbod (talk) 21:22, 5 February 2014 (UTC)

That's the Spring Festival link (below) again!" Does it repeat the books the Fitzwilliam has, already on Ext Links? Johnbod (talk) 21:20, 5 February 2014 (UTC)
I fixed the link, and no, it does not repeat one of the Fitzwilliam books. WilliamDigiCol (talk) 14:08, 6 February 2014 (UTC)
I think (per the MMA introduction & the FM "cover image") it does in fact - you've renamed the "Insect Book". But since their version just crashes for me, and you have extra material, let's add it anyway. Link text clarified above. Johnbod (talk) 15:03, 6 February 2014 (UTC)

Along the River During the Qingming Festival[edit]

Ok, but it needs to made clear that these are photos of limited edition reproductions of the MMA's Ming period copy of the much earlier original. Johnbod (talk) 21:19, 5 February 2014 (UTC)

COMMENT: 4 volume work, translated by Keane. I would also like to add to: Inca Empire; Ancient Peru -- (these might be a bit broad).

Ok to the bio - could you ask at the tak page for the others? As it's so old it may be available anyway, & may be a cornerstone of Inca studies, or hopelessly outdated; hard for me to know. Or you could ask a curator on that. Johnbod (talk) 00:36, 25 July 2013 (UTC)

COMMENT: I would also like to add to: Assyrian people; Assyria (too broad?); Assur; Vorderasiatisches Museum Berlin (not much on WP); Walter Andrae (lots on him); Tiglath-Pileser I (not much on WP); Tukulti-Ninurta I (not much on WP). WilliamDigiCol (talk) 18:44, 8 January 2014 (UTC)

Li Gonglin[edit]

COMMENT: There's surprisingly little on WP - anyway, this book has a good bio of this artist, so maybe someone will use it to flesh this page out a bit. Might also work with Classic of Filial Piety. WilliamDigiCol (talk) 21:06, 6 January 2014 (UTC)

Ok to both. Johnbod (talk) 18:34, 25 January 2014 (UTC)
