Public IP address

This is a dynamically-allocated IP address, used by Three, a major Internet and mobile phone provider in the UK. It is likely that each of the events mentioned, were committed by different people. Even switching your connecting device off and on again obtains a new IP.

This means that 1 - you're annoying a lot of people who are using the IP address later, and 2 - the vandal you are after has presumably worked his way through as many IP addresses as he likes since then. A SIM card costs 1 pound here. 3G Internet is available on Pay As You Go. So you can even change networks on a whim.

IP blocking is a stupid idea to start with, and would only have been anything like successful 20 years ago (and I was here), in the mostly fixed-IP days. When ISPs could allocate one address per customer if they wanted to. It's been largely obsolete since before Wikipedia started. There are good reasons why one might prefer not to register an account. Privacy and convenience being just two.

I realise one might feel impotent, in not being able to force people halfway across the world to accept one's rulings. But overkill is not the proper response to it. Perhaps IP bans of a day or so, or a few hours, would stop immediate shit-flooding. Anything more is a waste, and may even be considerable as a possible DOS attack, ie getting a whole network kicked off Wikipedia by shitposting from as many dynamic IPs as you can. It could be automated easily.

That, and the malfunctioning, clumsy robots some people take such pride in, are Wiki's two biggest problems. If you're too lazy to roll your sleeves up and edit manually, then let someone else do it, there's no shortage of volunteers. Something like the Wikipedia project is not well served, including ethically, by having faulty AI's and overgrown regexps run amok on the place.
