Regarding your change in Carmilla, referring to it as a "short story": Have you actually read Carmilla? It is not a short story, and is repeatedly referred to in period and contemporary reviews as a "novella." A novella is the shorter version of a novel, and one of the main distinctions is that a short story is not divided into chapters.
