Hello, I'm Oshwah. I noticed that in this edit to Gao Ming Jie, you removed content without adequately explaining why. In the future, it would be helpful to others if you described your changes to Wikipedia with an edit summary. If this was a mistake, don't worry, the removed content has been restored. If you think I made a mistake, or if you have any questions, you can leave me a message on my talk page. Thanks. ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 10:40, 21 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

If this is a shared IP address, and you did not make the edits, consider creating an account for yourself or logging in with an existing account so you can avoid further irrelevant notices.

@Oshwah:: that was a merge, not vandalism. I merged Gao Ming Jie to Gao Mingjie because they're about the same person. Regards, 59.149.124.29 (talk) 10:41, 21 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

OOPS! Sorry man! I see the edit summary and what you did - not sure what happened. ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 10:42, 21 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Request reason:

@Alexf: Is this an error? Kindly point to a specific edit of mine that is vandalism. The last thing I was doing was removing spam links to an Indonesian translation agency. That triggered an edit filter because I used the Undo function frequently, but not everything that triggers an edit filter is "vandalism". 59.149.124.29 (talk) 12:05, 2 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Decline reason:

I see many attempts at vandalism here. Yamla (talk) 12:25, 2 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

If you want to make any further unblock requests, please read the guide to appealing blocks first, then use the {{unblock}} template again. If you make too many unconvincing or disruptive unblock requests, you may be prevented from editing this page until your block has expired. Do not remove this unblock review while you are blocked.

@Yamla: I've made more than a thousand edits, but no one has ever complained that any of my edits are vandalism (there have been two vandalism warnings placed on my talk page; one was erroneous and the person apologised for placing it, and the other was removed by someone else who concluded that the editor who placed the warning was himself a vandal).

Blocked users cannot view Special:AbuseLog, but below is a table of all edits of mine that triggered an edit filter, aside from the most recent "Non-autoconfirmed user rapidly reverting edits" which I have already explained. None of these edits are vandalism, and each of those edits had an edit summary explaining what I was doing. All of these edits are constructive. Not everything that triggers an edit filter is vandalism, which is clear if you read the diffs. I challenge you to point to a single edit of mine which is vandalism. 59.149.124.29 (talk) 13:25, 2 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Table
Diff Edit filter triggered Edit summary Explanation of edit Was this edit ever reverted?
[1] "speedy deletion template removed" removing speedy. the source confirms the claim that their album sold more than one million copies. start a discography section. categories. I removed a {{db-nn}} tag after having added a sources proving there's a potential claim to notability. No
[2] "references removed" rm incorrect, ja:新井将敬 was ethnic Korean & elected to Japan Diet in 1986, see English obit at [3] I removing an incorrect statement sourced to a dead link, and providing a WP:RS link in my edit summary proving that the removed statement is incorrect. No
[4] "possible BLP issue or vandalism" MOS:NOTUSA, MOS:SURNAME, MOS:CAPS, nationality categories per nationality stated in infobox Changing the "name" parameter in an infobox triggers this filter. In this case, the name was incorrectly listed as Nitin Khanna, but the person in the article is actually named Jay Kim. I also did other minor copyediting. No
[5] "references removed" way too much detail about these people who did nothing relevant to this topic but make extremely obvious observations; if they deserve articles themselves, all the detail about their names and what papers they wrote can go there I condensed a passage of text. The passage contained a citation which was not about the subject of the article and was used to support extraneous detail, so I removed it No
[6] "possible BLP issue or vandalism" wrong DEFAULTSORT Changing the "name" parameter in an infobox triggers this filter. I changed the capitalisation of the name in the infobox from "Shin-Je" to "Shin-je" to match MOS:KO. No
[7] "possible BLP issue or vandalism" infobox & DEFAULTSORT should match article title capitalisation Similar to above edit: changing capitalism from "Tae-Young" to "Tae-young" to match the article title No
[8] "wikilinks removed" WP:APOENTRIES: one bluelink per line WP:APOENTRIES, which I cited in my edit summary, states that entries on name pages should contain only one link on each line, so I removed the extra link No
[9] "large plot addition" expand I added one sentence about the plot, citing a reliable source, and a much larger section about the production of the movie, also citing reliable sources No
[10] "references removed" wrong DEFAULTSORT; expand; eliminate some WP:CITEOVERKILL from the lede The article had one sentence with six citations to a bunch of articles which only peripherally mentioned the subject. I replaced those citations with better citations which were primarily about the subject. No
[11] "possible BLP issue or vandalism" wrong DEFAULTSORT and wrong name; all sources cited give his name as Lai Chu-en. expand. The person's name was misspelled. I provided references giving the correct spelling of his name, and significantly expanded the article as well. No
[12] "references removed" cleanup A link in the "External links" section had unnecessary <ref> tags around it preventing it from showing up there, so I removed the <ref> tags while leaving the link in place. I also did other minor copyediting. No
[13] "references removed" wrong DEFAULTSORT, broken pinyin, remove citation to user-edited source which fails WP:RS. I removed a reference to Baidu Baike, a user-edited encyclopedia which cannot be used as a reference within Wikipedia. I also did other minor copyediting. No
[14] removal of Category:Living People answer {{BLP living dead}} with source. get his name right. article should be about him, not a bunch of quotes about a case he investigated. The guy was dead not living. I provided a source proving that he was dead in the course of expanding his article. No
[15] "references removed" remove trivia. certainly not relevant enough for lead paragraph. don't see where it fits in the rest of the article. The article is a BLP; I removed a statement cited to a user-generated source (a webforum). No
[16] "removal of Category:Living People" answer {{BLP living dead}} with source The guy was dead not living. I provided a source proving that he was dead in the course of expanding his article. No
[17] "removal of Category:Living People" answer {{BLP living dead}} with archive.is version of source cited by Japanese Wikipedia for death date The guy was dead not living. I provided a source proving that he was dead in the course of expanding his article. No
[18] "removal of Category:Living People" answering {{BLP living dead}} with offline source The guy was dead not living. I provided a source proving that he was dead in the course of expanding his article. No
[19] "removal of Category:Living People" answer {{BLP living dead}} with source; other cleanup The guy was dead not living. I provided a source proving that he was dead in the course of expanding his article. No
[20] "removal of Category:Living People" answer {{BLP living dead}} with sources The guy was dead not living. I provided a source proving that he was dead in the course of expanding his article. No
[21] "removal of Category:Living People" answer {{BLP living dead}} with sources The guy was dead not living. I provided a source proving that he was dead in the course of expanding his article. No
[22] "possible BLP issue or vandalism" wrong DEFAULTSORT, other cleanup Edit consisted entirely of minor copyediting and additions to infobox based on sourced article content. I have no idea what triggered the edit filter. No
[23] "references removed" MOS:DAB (no piping, no references, one link per line) There should not be references on disambiguation pages, so I removed them No
[24] "Visual edit: Switched" overcapitalisation, etc. I accidentally turned on Visual Editor and turned it off again. Apparently that triggers an edit filter too, perhaps because such edits often contain erroneous Wikimarkup. No
Further discussion

Let's wait for Alexf (or perhaps Yamla) to return. I can't go into too many details, but I can say that most of the filter hits today are what we'd call false positives. The filter is practically designed to catch false positives. -- zzuuzz (talk) 14:16, 2 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Fair enough. But let me just say this: my entire track record here consists of constructing WP:GNOMEing and expansion of articles like Mizuho Katayama [25], Yun Mi-gyeong [26], Bang Hyun-joo [27], Seong Nak-gun [28], John Wey Ling [29], etc., and I include an edit summary with literally every one of my edits explaining what I'm doing. So I hope you all can understand that it is rather frustrating for me to be accused of vandalism, and even of inappropriately editing my own talk page [30], particularly when no one will actually point to a specific diff of any unconstructive edit I've made. 59.149.124.29 (talk) 14:36, 2 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I've seen this happen before (including the RFPP request) and it's equally frustrating to be involved with edit filters which have this effect. The only thing preventing me unblocking is an element of professional courtesy to the other two admins (and it is possible I've missed something). So hopefully this will get resolved soon and you can then carry on. In the meantime maybe go for a walk and enjoy some fresh air? I'll return in a couple of hours to see if Alexf shows any signs of returning, or if Yamla has had any additional input. -- zzuuzz (talk) 14:44, 2 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
zzuuzz Ok. Unblock if you must. All I saw was an unregistered user constantly hitting filters over and over this morning. You would think if the user is not committing vandalism, after the second instance of a filter stopping it, would stop retrying over and over, and find out what the issue is; perhaps even asking a question in the talk page? -- Alexf(talk) 16:05, 2 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Alexf You would think if the user is not committing vandalism, after the second instance of a filter stopping it, would stop retrying over and over. Not all edit filters actually stop a user from performing an edit, or even display a warning screen; the one I triggered certainly doesn't. I only even noticed I triggered it after looking at Special:MyContributions. 59.149.124.29 (talk) 16:08, 2 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
(ec) I think one of the key issues here is that none of the filters have ever triggered a warn or disallow action. That's to say, they're just quietly logging in the background and are covered by the bit that says "Entries in this list may be constructive or made in good faith ". IPs wouldn't know if they're at AIV either, and there's no warnings to indicate it might be imminent. Thanks, I'll unblock. -- zzuuzz (talk) 16:13, 2 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
 Done. -- zzuuzz (talk) 16:15, 2 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. Thank you very much for all of the additional information on Go Se-tae! I did have one question: for the newspaper link that you provided for his death, could you tell me where exactly his obituary is printed in that source. I believe that it is there, I just cannot identify where to click because I don't read/speak Korean, and I wanted to add the clipping to my personal files. Thank you again! Canadian Paul 13:54, 20 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Great! Thanks so much for the information; it is unfortunate to see that I was mistaken in thinking that he was still alive, but it is good to have the case finally solved. I don't know if this is in your field of interest/expertise, but I do have one more related question if you have the time: I have evidence that Hong Jong-o was still alive in 2012, but I have not heard anything since. Since I can't read Korean, it is difficult for me to check, but I was wondering if a quick Google search would turn up anything for you about whether he was still alive or has since died. Canadian Paul 14:32, 21 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for checking! Since you are kind enough to offer, I'm not too shy to take advantage! There's actually a few Korean Olympians with Wikipedia pages for whom I have no information either way: Park Seong-tae, Kim Ho-soon (cyclist), Sim Myeong-hui, An Jeong-geun, Kim Yun-gi. They are all fairly obscure (at least I think), so I wouldn't expect anything, but if you can find anything, it would be greatly appreciated! Canadian Paul 15:25, 21 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

editing user talk pages[edit]

Hi, when you added your WP:RFD notice to User talk:Ywwuyi, you removed the notice I provided of the nomination I made. I've re-added my notice now. Can you please be more careful when editing user talk pages please? It's bad practice (see WP:TPO) to edit other people's message on talk pages. Thanks. Chai K Toh[edit]

Hi - you may want to be aware that temporary or unofficial names used for foreigners in countries like China, Taiwan, Japan, etc. are not real names, and are not legal. Without a clear proof that it is a legal name and you put in wikipedia is like "jumping the gun". The 3rd parties you mention may be using a temporary or unofficial name for their convenience and having a web page on it does not imply its legal status. The university NCKU you cited is not responsible for name verification. They could be using it as a translation to enable their Chinese audience who have problems pronouncing English names. Extra care is needed when you put names on people. I suggest you temporarily remove it until we have verified sources to confirm it. Fellow007 (talk) 18:40, 16 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
