Listing deletion discussions at WT:MILHIST[edit]

Hi, Thanks for posting the notifications of those discussions. However, as it's generally quite a busy talk page, it would be better if you could add these discussion to Wikipedia:WikiProject Deletion sorting/Military rather than add to the volume of messages there (lots of editors appear to have this sorting list watchlisted judging from the responses to items posted there). Regards, Nick-D (talk) 07:31, 12 December 2012 (UTC)

That won't work, the files aren't listed at FFD, they are at other, weirder deletion processes, some of which have no discussion areas. -- (talk) 07:33, 12 December 2012 (UTC)
Wikipedia:WikiProject Deletion sorting/Military#Military Proposed deletions, Wikipedia:WikiProject Deletion sorting/Military#Military-related Images and media for Deletion or Wikipedia:WikiProject Deletion sorting/Military#Military-related Images and media for Deletion#Military-related Miscellany for deletion would do the trick, even if that isn't their intended purpose per-se. If you list them there people with notice, and people will remove the links when the content is deleted/kept. Regards, Nick-D (talk) 07:38, 12 December 2012 (UTC)
WP:CSD and WP:PUF are neither WP:MFD nor WP:FFD. Would slow-CSD deletions go under MFD, and PUF deletions go under FFD then? You should probably modify the delsort page to take account of CSD deletion nominations (such as non-image pages as well), and if PUF/NFCR are to be covered under FFD, then the description should be amended. -- (talk) 07:43, 12 December 2012 (UTC)
Yeah, but I'm thinking of a simple solution which would prevent mass-notifications on what's an unusually busy talk page. Nick-D (talk) 10:30, 12 December 2012 (UTC)

Wikipedia:Possibly unfree files/2012 December 10#File:Sarkozy Official Portrait.jpg[edit]

I just now noticed that you had replied there, sorry for missing it earlier. Thanks for the pointer to the official website. Judging from their legal information page, Google Translate tells me that "any use for commercial ... is prohibited" and further that "Graphics, photographs and multimedia resources may not be reproduced without permission." Obviously the translation looses some details, but I think it's enough to establish that while the information they provide is freely available, it is not free in terms of being actually in the public domain, or even free enough to count as free content here on Wikipedia, as we require that commercial reuse be allowed. VernoWhitney (talk) 17:44, 18 December 2012 (UTC)

That's weird, since all the French news agencies used that photo. -- (talk) 21:54, 18 December 2012 (UTC)
Well I'm really not familiar with French law, but in the U.S. that would almost certainly qualify as fair use (or perhaps they all asked for and received permission). Wikipedia uses a fairly strict definition to determine what constitutes 'free' content (see the first paragraph of Wikipedia:Non-free content), and even things like "non-commercial" or "for educational use only" restrictions are enough to classify something as non-free for our purposes. VernoWhitney (talk) 22:20, 18 December 2012 (UTC)
True. Though if it was prohibited for commercial use, how could a news agency use the photo? That's what's weird (unless of course, it was fair-use). -- (talk) 22:23, 18 December 2012 (UTC)
