Punishments or Bow Street runners?

Having re-read Hitchcock's & Shoemaker's "Retribution" chapter I actually think that a historical discussion of punishments would be useful. But Im not sure where it would go in the Wikipedia architecture. Its really a broader matter, to do with crime & punishment in general, not just the Old Bailey. If you decide to go for Bow Street, a good source is J.M. Beattie's book on the First English Detectives - its in the library (BALI) --Jfclegg (talk) 18:51, 18 October 2015 (UTC). I'd be glad to collaborate with her, though I do have a question: should this project be a side note, or should I make that my main objective? Because, having assumed that I would have to work with her on the side, I had chosen Thomas de Veil as my main topic (who I haven't written anything about yet because I'm still reading the sources- I do apologize, I swear I'll keep up with the timeline from now on) but I am now starting to doubt myself. Oh dear I think that you (and many others!) are not looking in the library catalogue! You can access it on line for any Ca' Foscari computer and from home via proxy or (better) VPN. William Wreathock and De Veil

Dear 858rine I like your De Veil page very much - congratulations. Wreathlock looks interesting too, and if you did it within a week could be eligible for "Did you know"status! Navarco can tell you about this.

You could also ask him if it wouldnt be better to first try to get the De Veil article up into a higher class. Suggestions and questions

Has any one from the group offered suggestions? I see that people have intervened , but not on the conent and t its not clear to me what is going on... ? As for content, I wonder about the anonymous 1743 Its very interesting as a tex,t but did De Veil really write a pamphlet with Swift? Cross check in a life of Swift? On Justices, trading and otherwise the authority is Norma Landau. We don't have her books but hunt on the net - and look for articles in J Stor? Hans De Veil and Swift

Try looking the essay up in the English Short Title Catalogue (British Library. Its on-line). Did you look in the standard (though rather old) biography of Swift? Irvin Ehrenpreis, Swift: The Man, His Works, and the Age (London: Methuen, 1962-83). As for particular cases, I think 2/3 examples could be interesting.
