Cambuskenneth collection

Hello, I heard about your project on twitter. I have started a number of pages about 16th-century Scotland. This one, burning of Edinburgh (1544), mentions a discrete collection of books in National Library under 'Looting.' I wonder if you think a picture of these books, or of their inscriptions could be added to wikicommons for this article, or indeed future articles about the Norris of Speke family. Similarly, articles like this, Mariotta Haliburton, quote from letters in the library, and so it might be possible to get images of the signature of personalities like hers. Hello! This is absolutely within my remit - I don't know the collections well enough myself to be able to confirm yes or no, but will absolutely put some enquiries throughout staff at the NLS who would know more about these items within the collection and what their possibility of release is. Thanks for bringing it to my attention, and I will ask around this month to see what I can find out. I'd point out that it's a busy month though, so if you don't hear anything in the next couple of weeks, give me another ping as I may have gotten a bit distracted and I am keen to get as many relevant items released as I can, especially if they can be added to specific articles! I would also encourage you, if you are interested, to add these same points to the NLS/Wikimedia project page, perhaps under the participate or discussion tabs, so that members of NLS staff who have been or are trained in future will also see it and be able to respond. University of Edinburgh: Wikipedia Teaching Assignments in the School of Social and Political Science

Hi Ally, This semester (Sept-Sec, 2014) have a class of 30 MSc students (Rethinking Development Economics) who have just completed a 1000 writing assignment - that involves them writing a wikipedia entry. I am now trying to run a short lunchtime workshop to encourage people to upload them to wikipedia. It would be great if we could invite you to come and talk to them, or even help run a brief training session. It would be great if we could use this as a pilot for other courses/colleagues across the School of Social and Political Science. Test Kaffeeklatsch area for women-only

Since WikiProject Women as proposed at the IdeaLab may take some time to realize, and based on a discussion on the proposal's talk page, I have started a test Kaffeeklatsch area for women only (cisgender or trans-woman, regardless of sexual orientation).

Nice to meet you

Nice to put faces to the names. The link I was trying to find to my proposed alternative Wikipedia policy was here. The policy would have been:

• Wikipedia's editors are expected to avoid, unless necessary for editorial reasons, the use of language which can be reasonably expected to offend a significant number of Wikipedia's readers. Wikipedia's editors are also expected to avoid the use of language which can reasonably be construed as belittling another user, unless such language is necessary for editorial reasons (e.g. warning an editor who is repeatedly introducing serious errors and refuses to accept reasonable explanations as to why their changes are inappropriate). Once an editor has had it drawn to their attention that another editor considers their conduct unacceptable, that editor should either cease the behavior in question or explain to the complaining editor why they consider the conduct reasonable; if the editors are unable to agree on what constitutes reasonable conduct, wider community input should be requested to determine consensus on the issue. If an editor continues unnecessarily to use language which has been determined to be offensive to significant numbers of Wikipedia's readers, or which is widely considered to constitute the unnecessary belittling of another Wikipedia editor, sanctions may be imposed upon the editor in question.
• Likewise, if an editor repeatedly accuses another editor of inappropriate conduct after such conduct has been deemed appropriate by the broader community, and continues to make such accusations after the fact of it being considered acceptable has been drawn to their attention, sanctions may be imposed to prevent the editor in question from continuing to make vexatious complaints.
• Other than in exceptional cases in which a given editor's continued activity has a realistic potential to cause serious damage to the English language Wikipedia or serious damage to public perception of the English language Wikipedia, blocks and other sanctions will not be applied for breaches of this policy, both in the case of users using language considered to be uncivil and in the case of users considered to be making vexatious complaints, prior to community discussion about the appropriateness of such sanctions.

Once you ignore the fact that it's written in WP:Bradspeak to try to make it as watertight as possible, the whole thing boils down to "We recognise that on a multinational project, people have different ideas about what's appropriate, so nobody's going to get in trouble for a first offence. However, once someone's told you they find something offensive, the burden is on you to demonstrate that it's necessary to use this particular form of words if you want to continue using it. If you carry on using this language regardless, it might trigger a request for a broader community discussion about whether this language is appropriate, which could lead to blocks or other sanctions." It naturally never went anywhere, but I've yet to see a good reason why it wouldn't work. (In fact, speaking of Bradspeak, User:Newyorkbrad, now you're no longer bound by Arbcom omerta can you see any reason why replacing the meandering mess of WP:CIV with these three paragraphs wouldn't work?)

Let me know if you do get back to 19th-century teratology, and I'll be glad to help; aside from a brief series on bridges, virtually all my significant Wikipedia contributions have been on the outsider in Victorian (or sometimes 18th-century or early 20th-century) society, ranging from the astonishingly-offensive-on-every-level Pig-faced women and Tarrare to the special trains used to take mental patients to hospital. – iridescent 20:10, 22 April 2015 (UTC)

Wikipedia Science Conference

Hi, this is another update on the Wikipedia Science Conference taking place in London on Wednesday 2nd and Thursday 3rd of September.

• Booking has opened at just 29 pounds, including lunch on both days.
• Take a look at the (pretty much final) programme if you haven’t seen it yet. With 18 plenary speakers - three from overseas - as well as the large unconference section, there’s a lot going on, and the Royal Society of Chemistry is sponsoring a wine reception in the evening.
• We are also in the full swing of publicity. Emails have been, and are, going out to funders, scholarly societies, and university departments, but any additional promotion is appreciated. Please share a link, or tell colleagues in relevant fora. All publicity material for the conference is, of course, freely licenced for you to adapt.
• After the conference there will be two hackathons: one Cambridge on the Friday, the other hosted by Wikimedia UK in London on the Saturday. These are being led by Daniel Mietchen and Stefan Kasberger. Follow the link for more details.

This grant has been approved in pilot form, and the Ada Initiative is running an Ally Skills Workshop at Wikimania 2015. This workshop will focus on teaching specific skills and techniques directly relevant to Wikipedia admins and editors, and in particular will teach people about the psychology of trolls. The workshop will be on Thursday July 16 from 2pm to 5pm in Don Diego 3.

Europe 10,000 Challenge invite

Hi. The Wikipedia:WikiProject Europe/The 10,000 Challenge has recently started, based on the UK/Ireland Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge. The idea is not to record every minor edit, but to create a momentum to motivate editors to produce good content improvements and creations and inspire people to work on more countries than they might otherwise work on. There's also the possibility of establishing smaller country or regional challenges for places like Germany, Italy, the Benelux countries, Iberian Peninsula, Romania, Slovenia etc, much like Wikipedia:The 1000 Challenge (Nordic). For this to really work we need diversity and exciting content and editors from a broad range of countries regularly contributing. WikiProject Women in Red/The World Contest

Hi. This month The Women in Red World Contest is being held to try to produce new articles for as many countries worldwide and occupations as possible. There is over £3000 in prizes to win, including Amazon vouchers and paid subscriptions. Wikimedia UK is putting up £250 specifically for editors who produce the most quality new women bios for British women, with special consideration given to missing notable biographies from the Oxford Dictionary of Biography and Welsh Dictionary of Biography. If you're not interested in prize money yourself but are willing to participate independently this is also fine, but please add any articles created to the bottom of the main contest page even if not competing.
