Zergeisterung

09:51, 10 May 2006 (UTC) Waleswal 10:30, 10 May 2006 (UTC)

Waleswal 10:30, 10 May 2006 (UTC)

Waleswal 10:30, 10 May 2006 (UTC)

Regarding this I must say a strange way of commenting, I would like you to pay attention to how Kosovo is represented internationally, and you will then realize why the flag of UN is appropriate there. And by the way, Kosovo is an entity under UN interim administration, as its Constitutional Framework (a document approved by UN) defines it. Danke schön, ilir_pz 13:31, 30 May 2006 (UTC)

Example images

Please, could you inform me whether or not use of example imagery is sanctioned by wikipedia as opposed to reverting changes I've made? Fair use imagery is not permitted for userboxes, hence the replacement. Vic Vipr TC 12:14, 16 June 2006 (UTC)

Not sure about the policy in that case. I simply tried to reduced the list of articles using [[:Image:Example.jpg]], to make that list again usable to find and fix editing experiments. I later discovered it also has a Image:Example.png which is the same picture and thus can simply be used for legitimate uses of an example picture - and with that one I could reduce the list to just one. So feel free to change it back to the example pic, but the one with png extension. andy 19:48, 16 June 2006 (UTC)

Dr. Peter Scheldt

I, Simon Scheldt, son of the late Dr. Peter Scheldt just like to mention the contribution of my father to the world. This portal (Wikipedia) is the only way I can do such a thing. The papers are difficult to get published as I am not a doctor myself and don't have the expertise for doing the same. But nevertheless, I am trying my level best. But till then Wikipedia is the only way my late father can get his contribution to the world.

Deletion log plesae question

Hello,

I saw that you deleted some enteries at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Deletion_log_archive/October_2004_(3).

Is it possible that you remove names Vojmil and Verica (and second names) from log archive, or at least portions of the text explaining the deletion resaons since we are real persons?

BAFTA "disambiguation"

It doesn't look like BAFTA was ambiguous, just a simple redirect, and you don't need to "fix" those (unless you're making other edits to the pages), because the cost of editing is greater than the savings. See Wikipedia:Redirect#Don.27t fix links to redirects that aren.27t broken. -- JHunterJ 11:26, 26 June 2006 (UTC)

BAFTA is a disambiguation page (though it might be doubious if it really should), thus the links should be fixed. andy 11:27, 26 June 2006 (UTC)
Ah, I see. I just searched on "bafta", and Bafta is the simple redirect. As you were. :-) -- JHunterJ 11:31, 26 June 2006 (UTC)
And I've returned BAFTA to a redirect, with an appropriate change to British Academy of Film and Television Arts, and created BAFTA (disambiguation) to hold the previous BAFTA contents. But of course, I'll leave the new links straight to British Academy of Film and Television Arts alone. -- JHunterJ 15:17, 26 June 2006 (UTC)

I beleive that I at least deserve an explanation

...instead of the cold, vandailism-implied, admin rollback function edit summary of "Reverted edits by Hbdragon88 (talk) to last version by Conrad Devonshir" on the Wikipedia:Ye olde Badd Giokes and Other Deleetid Nonsense page. That was not vandalism and I think I should at least be informed why you don't think it's BJAODN worthy. Hbdragon88 19:32, 27 June 2006 (UTC)

How can simple and plain editing experiments be funny enough to be worth adding them in BJAODN? It just looked like what an ordinary newby creates by clicking randomly on the toolbar - like many of that kind I clean usually. andy 19:51, 27 June 2006 (UTC)
See, that's good! If you had just said that in the edit summary, instead of implying that it was vandalism, I would have been fine with that, instead of having to ask you directly. Hbdragon88 19:55, 27 June 2006 (UTC)
I clean such editing experiments so often, thus I use the administrator rollback button which automatically adds that text. It is much faster than doing the revert manually and typing a polite text. In 99.9% of all cases the one who added the editing experiments will never notice if or how they were fixed later, thus the polite editing comment is a waste of time. andy 19:59, 27 June 2006 (UTC)
Wikipedia:Administrators says otherwise. My edit was not "simple vandalism" (i.e. blanking the page, adding in gibberish) and should have been manually rollbacked with an "appropriate edit summary." Treating such edits as simple vandalism in using the rollback to me sounds like not assuming good faith. Hbdragon88 20:41, 27 June 2006 (UTC)
Text which is created by randomly clicking on the toolbar totally fits into my definition of glibberish. andy 21:11, 27 June 2006 (UTC)

Miloslav Klose

Hello Andy, I'm wondering how to pronounce his name in Thai. In my understanding his name should be "มีโรสลาฟ โคลเซ" the wold Mi- pronounce as long -ee; correct me if I'm wrong. But the Thai newspapers always write his name as "มิโรสลาฟ โคลเซ" or "มิโรสลาฟ โคลเซ่," with the short -ee at the first word and/or the rising tone at the end.

The article is at th:มิโรสลาฟ โคลเซ. Thank you --Manop - TH 07:24, 29 June 2006 (UTC)

RE: Don Mueang vs. Don Muang

Don Muang is used on Bangkok's road signs to the airport and by the Thai people. I don't go by the number of Google hits. The BMA listed it as Don Muang not Don Mueang and Thais seldom use Don Mueang. Its better if we use the more common name. --Terence Ong (Chat | Contribs) 14:35, 14 July 2006 (UTC)

I strongly disagree. On road signs you also find varying spellings (not sure about Don Mueang, but other names are differently transcribed), and it's hard to understand why one government department creates a "official" transcription scheme, and other departments use their own. You might also see Wikipedia:Manual of Style (Thailand-related articles) - though never officially adopted, the consensus there was to use RTGS. andy 14:39, 14 July 2006 (UTC)
I don't know much about how you all name Thai articles here, but on my recent trip to the city it was named Don Muang. Its very complicated actually, but I think we should use a more common name for the article as more people are likely to search for it. We don't need to be very strict with guidelines. --Terence Ong (Chat | Contribs) 14:46, 14 July 2006 (UTC)
Quite the contrary. Just because there are so many version it is very helpful to have at least a standard to use. There are always redirects which can be used, but internally we should try our best to have a consistant spelling scheme. And Muang is a misleading spelling, while Mueang is a common word (meaning town) you will find it in several places - for example the administrative entities Amphoe Mueang and Thesaban Mueang, there are places named something like Mueang Mai (new town), streets named Thanon Mueang (a bit like "main street") - and for each there might be a different spelling predominately. It'd simply be a chaos, so better sometimes use a less common but more "correct" spelling than do it different every time. andy 15:02, 14 July 2006 (UTC)

Sai Yok Noi & Yai

So is Sai Yok Yai related to Sai Yok Noi (like part of the same Sai Yok system), or are they in two totally different parts of Thailand? I think it matters if I'm going to move the article as I mentioned. Where did you learn Thai? - Draeco 16:41, 17 July 2006 (UTC)

Both are in the same area of Kanchanaburi Province, and both are part of the Sai Yok National Park. While Sai Yok Yai is about 100km from Kanchanaburi town, Sai Yok Noi just 60 km, so they are not that close together, but still could both be covered in an article on the national park. I am learning Thai in the local Folk high school, but as it's just once a week I am still not much more than a beginner. andy 20:33, 17 July 2006 (UTC)

Refusal of GenStat page

I note your comment regarding the proposed change of the GenStat page. I work at VSNi, the owners of GenStat, so can legitimately use the website copyrighted text - however I accept the point made by one of our developers that future use by another individual may cause issues.

What I don't appreciate is the comment regarding marketing blurb. How is what I produced any different from major parts of the SAS system page which is pure marketing for their relevant products & services?

It is always a good idea to stay away from article which you are personally or professionally inflicted with. It's then very hard to stay neutral, and in case of that article it started to sound like an ad for that product, not an encyclopedic article about it. Thinks like a feature list are really not necessary. andy 16:28, 19 July 2006 (UTC)

I agree that I am probably too close to the subject - would be hard not to be! And also that the content could be more informative and less feature list. I still ask the question how SAS get away with full product and feature lists on their page, are they in a different category?

Quite simple - there are many many editors here, thus there is no central editor who checks everything and decides what should be kept in an article and what not. Thus it was simply coincidence that I came across your edit and reverted it because of copyright concern and (I have to admit even more) because it changed the article into something you'd find on a company website, but not in an encyclopedia. Maybe for that SAS article such an edit slipped through. Or the feature list there is somewhat less obviously like the one on the product leaflet - it does not take more than 50% of the article text there, but is just one point amoung many. But if you want you can comment on the talk page associated with that article Talk:SAS System as well. andy 07:52, 20 July 2006 (UTC)

Edit of Bluehorses page

Please can you explain why the page was changed back ... as a member of the bluehorses organisation surely it is within my remit to define the definition of what the band is or is not ... the statement on the web site is the most succinct definition of the band we have been able to generate - that is why it is there.

some feedback would be appreciated rather than a bland rubbing out —Preceding unsigned comment added by BlueSkyMiner (talkcontribs)

See [2] where I did add the reason why I reverted the article - you added text copied from another website, which is a copyright violation and has to be removed. Besides, your version was only text which fits on a fan website, but this is an encylcopedia which needs things like a general introduction for those not familiar with the topic. andy 10:21, 26 July 2006 (UTC)

Still confused. ... since
  1. the information is not from a fan site but the publicity material and just happens to also be on the official website
  2. it is far more informative than the orginal stub
  3. it is work in progress and I hope to improve it - it was better than the stub
I am happy to improve the article where constructive critism can help —Preceding unsigned comment added by BlueSkyMiner (talkcontribs)
Regardless whether the source is a fan site or the official website - copying text is not allowed unless the source is explicitely in the public domain. And a good encyclopedic article reads rather boring, this like "...are probably the only Celtic-rock-folk-heavy-metal-goth band around" is not really Wikipedia:NPOV, nor a good first introductive sentence - while "The Bluehorses are a Welsh folk rock band who fuse Celtic themes with classic rock improvisations." is much better. Of course you are free to merge information (but not the actual words) from that website into the article, but make it sound as neutral as possible. andy 11:15, 26 July 2006 (UTC)
Thank you for your help - this is a learnign experience for me, however I would appreciate it if you could look at my latest attempt and let me know if it is any better BlueSkyMiner 16:04, 26 July 2006 (UTC)

Amphoe List

Andy: I hope you don't mind that I reverted that complete Amphoe list you added in the Amphoe article. IMHO this list is better put into the separate article List of districts of Thailand, as it is quite long. <snip> andy 12:04, 3 August 2006 (UTC)

Joran Omark: Ah, I was looking for such a list, but couldn't find it, so I created my own. Thank you. However, many of the spellings vary from my list to yours. I know that translitteration from Thai to English is hellish, but I assume you are using some sort of standard. As the list I provided used the "Royal" recommendations, I assume you do not. What standard are you following? --JOmark 01:18, 4 August 2006 (UTC)
I had prepared such a list before, but only on my userpage as I wasn't happy with the design yet. But now I made that list to be the article. IIRC the spelling was originally from the census 2000 reports, I always planned to verify the spelling with the recommended ones, but haven't yet done it. But there should be only few which really differ - feel free to "correct" them (but then also check the province article and fix there accordingly). andy 11:50, 4 August 2006 (UTC)

The Example image

I don't mean to be rude or anything; this is purely genuine curiosity, but is there a reason why you're changing all the Example images to the PNG format? Are people wanting to delete the JPG one or something? --
JD don't talk email me 16:16, 8 August 2006 (UTC)

Quite simple - that Example.jpg is added by this nifty toolbar button, thus pages which contain it contain editing experiments, sometimes vandalism, sometimes unfinished editing, sometimes by accident. However to find these pages any "correct" use of such an example image should not show up in the list of pages containing the editing experiments, and that can be easily done by using the PNG for "correct" uses. andy 16:19, 8 August 2006 (UTC)

Ah, right. Thanks for the reply. Just one other question: is there an SVG version? --
JD don't talk email me 16:21, 8 August 2006 (UTC)

There is Image:Example.svg, but it's a different pic. AFAIK there's no SVG version of exactly that Example.png... andy 16:33, 8 August 2006 (UTC)

Meh, okay then. Thanks for answering my question. --
JD don't talk email me 16:38, 8 August 2006 (UTC)

Can we rethink the protection of..

The deleted article Paul Tait? A very legitimate Paul Tait is Wikilinked from the article Boston United F.C.. Or do you think it would be quicker and easier merely to create Paul Tait/temp? I know I'm able to edit it as an admin, but I wanted to ask your opinion before I did anything too hasty with my power. Thank you in advance. Bobo. 20:54, 9 August 2006 (UTC)

Well, it has been some time since that article was used for the attack page. If you have enough things to write about the legitimate Paul Tait to make it a useful article I don't think there's much problem with unprotecting that one. But maybe to be use keep it in your watchlist then... andy 16:28, 10 August 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for THIS. Idon't know how I did that. Cheers, User:Mikereichold | User_talk:Mikereichold 14:13, 10 August 2006 (UTC)

Probably you clicked on the editing toolbar by accident. But it happens to others as well occasionally, I clean these ones regularily - but more often these are added as editing experiments. andy 16:26, 10 August 2006 (UTC)

Question.

I'm really not that good at this whole wiki thing, but [3] someone has vandalised it. I don't know enought about trade or wiki to be able to fix it. --Ufoolme 17:20, 10 August 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for noting it, I removed that nonsense part. But you could have fixed it yourself as well, simply use the edit button and delete that text - it is all the same like when you edited this page. andy 19:43, 10 August 2006 (UTC)

Next time you come to Thailand

And land at the new airport forget about taking a taxi: Suvarnabhumi_Airport#No_Taxiservice_from_the_airport

Waerth 12:14, 15 August 2006 (UTC)

Luckily normally we get picked up from the airport, so we rarely need taxi there. The interesting question - how much did that limo service pay to get such exclusivity. Anyway - nice to see that you are still around - have you noticed the progress that Wikipedia:WikiProject Thai districts you once started has made in the meantime? andy 12:41, 15 August 2006 (UTC)
Good :) It is nice to see progress. I am fairly close to starting my own wiki project as I feel that wikimedia is suffering from the Polder Model in extremis. Especially with regards to clear POV pushers and trolls. They get blocked on en: User:EffK and on nl: people want to talk with him and guide him: nl:Gebruiker:EffK. People are so sadomasochistic. Also with other things like stable versions etc I feel the wikimedia project is nearing a dead end with everyone wanting to participate in the discussion and have their say in everything. Also having to explain to and discuss with anons who come by make a statement and who you cannot revert because you have to talk to them while they do not talk back, nor want to identify themselves and stick to their statements and if you revert them you bite a newcomer and you as a 3 year wikipedian have to defend yourself while the anon no-one knows will get a benefit of the doubt while no-one knows the anon are to time-consuming imho. I have registered a site and I am now looking for someone to install the mediawiki software for me in September after my holiday in the Netherlands. Waerth 12:50, 15 August 2006 (UTC)

German --> English

Hello Andy, I'm Manop from Thai WP. This might not be related to Wikipedia though. I'm wondering if you know any software or Website that can translate German to English for Words document. Thank you. --Manop - TH 19:05, 16 August 2006 (UTC)

If you need a translate word-by-word, then http://dict.leo.org is very useful. For complete texts I only know Babelfish, but that one usually creates so much nonsense translation, so it's only useful to get a first glimpse on the contents or for amusement. Maybe you can ask User:Bact, he works with computational linguistics, so he should know about it better than me. andy 11:24, 17 August 2006 (UTC)
Thank you so much --Manop - TH 01:27, 18 August 2006 (UTC)

Unspecified source for Image:Lauenburg district coa.png

Thanks for uploading Image:Lauenburg district coa.png. I notice the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this file yourself, then there needs to be a justification explaining why we have the right to use it on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you did not create the file yourself, then you need to specify where it was found, i.e., in most cases link to the website where it was taken from, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the file also doesn't have a copyright tag, then one should be added. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as {{Non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Mushroom (Talk) 16:28, 19 August 2006 (UTC)

Example.jpg vs Example.png

I saw you made this change on the talk page of my temporary Anthropology wikiproject page. I wanted to point out that the .jpg version is what came up when I hit the "Embedded Image" on the editing toolbar. If it should have been .png, how would we get the editing toolbar to insert the right one? Ungovernable ForceThe Wiki Kitchen! 02:06, 22 August 2006 (UTC)

Quite the contrary. Simply because the jpg is added by the toolbar all intended use of an example image should use the png version, so the list of pages using the jpg indicate all those pages which need to be checked for editing experiments. andy 08:03, 22 August 2006 (UTC)
Eh? So, couldn't you do that with the Example.png page too? I will admit, that I'm not too good with the technical aspects of wikipedia, so I often don't understand these things. First off, what's the difference between .jpg and .png on wikipedia, and why do we use one sometimes and the other other times? Same with .svg. I'm sorry to bother you with my ignorance on this topic, but I thought you might know. Ungovernable ForceThe Wiki Kitchen! 08:07, 22 August 2006 (UTC)
It has nothing to do with technical reasons. The reason is that people (usually newbies) click on the toolbar randomly and then save the article, rarely also experienced users click on it by accident. To spot these editing experiments or mistakes and clean them the list of ligitimate uses of these things must be short - which can be easily done by using the png version for legitimate uses, and leave the jpg one in the toolbar. And in case someone used the jpg one in a legitimate way it can simply be exchanged with the png version. andy 08:22, 22 August 2006 (UTC)
That makes sense. Thanks. Ungovernable ForceThe Wiki Kitchen! 08:23, 22 August 2006 (UTC)

Curtis Island

Thanks for adding the edits - Regarding this detail "Lieutenant John Watts, RN was the first European to visit the Macauley and Curtis Islands on the Lady Penrhyn in 1780" I'm not sure that everything is OK with this - the link to Lady Penrhyn has the ship 'built in 1786' versus my date of discovering Curtis Island in 1780 - ( ship discovering the island before being built )? LawrieM 01:48, 28 August 2006 (UTC)

Yes, I noticed that one as well when I added that link. Apparently there were (at least) two ships named Lady Penrhyn. Thus the fully correct that article needs to be converted into a disambiguation page. However I think that can wait till we can find enough information to write a decent article on the earlier ship. andy 11:53, 28 August 2006 (UTC)

In the meantime I just changed 1780 to 1780's. The ship you have listed is probably correct in that the Part-Owner was called Curtis and some other associate was called Macauley. LawrieM 22:27, 28 August 2006 (UTC)

Hi Andy. I think you will be interested in this news. There is a proposal, originated by Thaksin, to create a new province around current king's resident (Klai Kangwon Palace). -- Lerdsuwa 14:38, 30 August 2006 (UTC)

Attila the Hun

Hi, I saw you did a 'partial protection' of the Hungary page a few days ago so I'm wondering if you could look into some vandalism that keeps occurring at the Attila the Hun article that no one seems to be doing anything about? I don't know what would be the normal course of action here. Some anonymous IPs keep adding a link to a porn site [4], [5], [6], [7], [8]. --Stacey Doljack Borsody 23:41, 30 August 2006 (UTC)

If its the same IP, then adding a notice {{spam}} to the IP talk page, and if that one doesn't help {{spam2}} etc. If it's always the same URL, then you can also ask for its inclusion in the global antispamlist at Meta:Talk:Spam blacklist. And you can also ask for the partial protection like I did for Hungary at Wikipedia:Requests for page protection. However I think that Hun spam is still too rare to do anything more than just revert and warn the user, but if it persists you can escalate it anytime. andy 07:36, 31 August 2006 (UTC)
Thanks for the suggestions :) --Stacey Doljack Borsody 21:50, 31 August 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for helping out on Muang Tum. Are there other famous Hindu temples in Thailand on wiki?Bakaman Bakatalk 00:09, 1 September 2006 (UTC)

The one which is most well-known is the contemporary Sri Mahamariamman Temple in Bang Rak district of Bangkok. There are many Brahman shrines found in the country, e.h. Ho Phra Isuan and Ho Phra Narai in the town Nakhon Si Thammarat, yet they are not much notable and thus have no separate article. There are also many ruins from Khmer times, some of which Buddhist but the older ones are Brahman as well. Some of these sites have articles, but I am not aware of which one is actually mainly Brahman. andy 11:04, 1 September 2006 (UTC)

Re: Evening

These comments were made to me by a user regarding an IP address that you blocked last night. If you have any response, can you please direct it towards his Talk page? Thanks! (aeropagitica)

I know it's a real ball ache for you, but would you mind leaving a message on the talk page of those you've blocked please, that they're blocked. Not having your godlike powers makes, it's a pain in the proverbial when I'm looking at who I've given warnings to over the last couple of hours or soto see if they've carried on etc. Cheers muchly Khukri (talk . contribs) 22:18, 14 September 2006 (UTC)

I thought that I always told people/IP addresses that I have blocked a) that I have done so and b) the duration of the block. Can you provide a link to one that I haven't please? Your message comes across as sarcastic, by the way, but I won't intepret it as such. (aeropagitica) 22:23, 14 September 2006 (UTC)

Sorry didn't mean it to come across as sarky in the slightest. There's too few people looking out for vandalism IMHO, and I don't mean to insult in any way at all. My message just came about from 8.8.36.69 someone I'd been watching for a bit, and I saw you blocked him/her with a couple of others thats all. Don't take it in the wrong way at all, never meant as a criticism, it just helps those few of us non admins who do the occasional edits and patrol work. Cheers Khukri (talk . contribs) 22:31, 14 September 2006 (UTC)

OK, be careful about using humour via e-mail/Talk pages because it is not always taken in the spirit in which it was meant by your readers! If you look at Special:Blockip/8.8.36.69, you will see that the IP address was blocked by Ahoerstemeier rather than myself. Can you direct your comments towards them, please? Perhaps I cleaned up WP:AIV when all of the IP addresses had been blocked and you picked my name from that instead. Goodnight! (aeropagitica) 22:39, 14 September 2006 (UTC)
No problems, but you've given me the link for an admins only page. Sorry for the confusion and for clearing it up. I only saw you had cleared three from the history at the same time. If you would take two sec's to look through my history, to put it bluntly I ain't the sarky type. But I do appreciate the time you've taken to reply. Cheers muchly. Your revert of vandalism to Francisco Pizarro

Hi, I notice that you've been around Wikipedia a lot longer than me so I'll try not to be too pedantic.

Your revert to the Francisco Pizarro article only addressed one case of vandalism. As it turned out, that was the seventh (!) in a serial string of vandalist edits to that article. When I find an instance of vandalism, I find it useful to do a "diff" and then click on "previous version" until I find a legitimate edit. Usually, this only takes one or two clicks but this time it took seven! It must have been a bunch of kids sitting together in computer lab saying "Let's go play with the Francisco Pizarro article."

Please consider the possibility of multiple serial vandalisms in the future when reverting. The use of edit summaries and logged-in usernames does not unfortunately guarantee the legitmacy of edits.

Thanks for your efforts to help keep Wikipedia free of vandalism. Keep up the good work.

The version I deleted then simple contained "This wing of Indian Government takes care of the international crimes.", thus it was a speedy deletion candidate because it was too short and without any context to be useful to any reader. Hi nice work on the amphoes but remember to wikify the text in the middle of your articles into ink then convert from red ink into blue. Well done and good luck. NO you are exactly right-

I just realised they are mini sub areas of the amphoe which should only be opened if info is available. I'll leave you to start the more important larger amphoes firstErnst Stavro Blofeld 22:17, 8 November 2006 (UTC)

Yes, it is already difficult to find good information on some of the remote Amphoe, so for the small towns or the tambon it's nearly impossible to write more than a substub, even when reading Thai the web doesn't have much yet for most. And I am not really happy with the Amphoe articles either which have more tabular data than other things. But I wouldn't hold my breath hoping for these starts to get enlarged soon - many of the Thai province article are still the same like I left them 2 years ago. andy 22:36, 8 November 2006 (UTC)

A Request for Help: Undoing a Redirect

Andy, this is Nick, the German-speaking English teacher from LA. I wrote a Migjid Janraisig article, but another chap (rather brusquely) redirected (and thus eliminated) it to the Avalokiteshvara article. I've explained my reasons for the separate article on my talk page--but heck if I know how to undo the redirect. May I have the favor of your advice and technical expertise?

I gather this is a common peril of life on the Wikipedia--but isn't that a breach of manners without discussing it first on an article's discussion page?Nhrenton 12:52, 8 December 2006 (UTC)

Re Undoing a Redirect

Andy: Thanks for your reply--I'll bow to your expertise and let the Migjid Janraisig redirect lie. (I also apologize for the improper posting on the user page--you can see I have a lot to learn!) I really haven't found a Mongolian with enough Buddhist knowledge to give me enough info to add to the Avalokitesvara article. Nonetheless, I'm glad that (thanks to my efforts) the Migjid Janraisig name is now more properly identified; it seems to be the (newly?) standard Mongolian name. it was rather cryptic in the Ulaanbaatar article. Furthermore,ts omission on from the Avaloskitesvara article was quite glaring.Nhrenton 12:58, 9 December 2006 (UTC)

Lan Xang kings problems

Hello Andreas I do not know if you are the right one for this. I just found out to my horror (after some nitwit from nl: started changing names of the kings because en: said so) that the english wikipedia is using some kind of strange alternative listing and names for the Lan Xang kings. I know there are about 16 used. So I have taken my time 3 years ago to sort it out a little bit and used the most common one used in books I have on the subject. Which are amongst others:

  • The Lao kingdom of Lan Xang: Rise and decline (Martin Stuart - Fox, White Lotus press, 1998, ISBN 974-8434-33-8)
  • History of Laos (M.L. Manich Jumsai, Chalermnit, 2000)
  • Breaking new ground on Laos history (diverse auteurs, Silkworm books, 2002, ISBN 974-7551-93-4)

And I have been to the Siam historical society at Asoke to read on this subject. But now on en.wikipedia someone has made all of this kings and used totally different names etc, which are absolutely not used in these books, also no references were given. I do not know how to sort this out and it is becoming a mess on nl: because they point to en: like a flock of sheep not hindered by braincells that if en: says it it should be true. Waerth 03:34, 11 December 2006 (UTC)

I guess the easiest way around is to fix/revert the article here to the version fitting with your sources, include those books as references, and put a note on the talk page where you explain the revert and ask the contributor of the false/uncommon list for his sources.
BTW: Nice to see that you are still not completely gone away from Wikipedia, seems like the addiction is stronger than the bad experiences you had on nl. andy 12:10, 11 December 2006 (UTC)

Transliteration for Thai WP

I have posted this to your Thai WP talk page, before I realized that I should come here.

Hello Andy. (I hope you don't mind being called by given name.) I am wondering about Anne Frank. She was a German-born who later moved to the Netherlands. Her full name is Annelies Marie Frank. How do you pronounce the name in German, and is it different from in Dutch? I do not think it is, since the two languages are similar. I have seen the name transliterated as Is it right? Also how is Anne? Is it อันเนอ or อันนา? I don't think it's just แอนน์ like English. I'd like to use the closest transliteration of her names at the beginning of the article, and I am not sure about it since I am not German or Dutch literated. Apologize for my badly-organized English.

You can answer either here or in your Thai talk page. Thank you very much.kinkku ananas (talk) 10:20, 12 December 2006 (UTC)

What is your justification for "Salting the Earth" on Panupand Vijjuprabha?

Panupand Vijjuprabha is a very well known chess personality both in Thailand and in FIDE the World Chess Federation. He has placed a bid to hold the World Chess Olympiad, in which 159 nations will compete, four years from now.

He easily meets the standard for notability in Wikipedia.

Do you have some reason for twice deleting his biography, or are you one of those Wikipedia egomaniacs who just go around salting the earth on anything you disagree with?

Sam Sloan Sam Sloan 17:57, 14 December 2006 (UTC)

That article was deleted several times before and went through a Afd. Deleted articles can be deleted speedily (see item G4). I have no idea if he is famous or not, but recreating it after deletion without any discussion is not a good idea. You best follow the instructions which is now at Panupand Vijjuprabha, especially the point "Restoration can be discussed on the talk page or at Deletion Review." BTW: Keep cool, calling someone "egomanic" is not helpful. andy 18:04, 14 December 2006 (UTC)

Since you have no idea whether he is famous or not, you should have tried to find out before "Salting the Earth".

Do you do this often? Post on a subject you know nothing about? I guess it must keep you busy. Sam Sloan 20:39, 14 December 2006 (UTC)

Converting Cochlear Image from GFDL to Public Domain?

Hello, I'm a newcomer to Wikipedia editing, but was wondering if it would be possible to convert the license of

from GFDL to public domain? I ask this because the article here states that "... [for] images you are not limited to the GFDL: any free license will do." The image would be more useful to me in the public domain. Is it possible to convert? --Dafty4 20:30, 18 December 2006 (UTC)

Of course it is possible to release an image (or any other thing you create like text, sound recordings etc.) with further licenses, so who wants to use it can pick the one most fitting for him. However - this can only be done by the one who creates it, so in this case you have to ask User:Oarih. I cannot do anything, I could only release my own photos to PD. andy 20:59, 18 December 2006 (UTC)

Please do not add nonsense to Wikipedia, as you did to Avril Lavigne. It is considered vandalism. If you would like to experiment, use the sandbox. Thank you. - edit difference here --tonsofpcs (Talk) 13:51, 20 December 2006 (UTC)

Oh, don't know how that happened, I planned to remove one nonsense sentence just as I wrote in the editing comment, but apparently I accidentally started with an older revision which still contained other vandalism. andy 13:53, 20 December 2006 (UTC)

Keeping Pattaya wiki clean

Thanks for your work on keeping the Pattaya wiki clean. I've pulled out some of those reappearing external web links myself, and they grow back like a bad case of crabgrass. I've noticed that you've been reverting vandalism and inappropriate entries from the Pattaya wiki entry for some time now. Appreciate the effort. - Thaimoss 21:54, 20 December 2006 (UTC)

It's the same problem with the other touristical areas, like Phuket Province, Krabi Province, Ko Samui, Ko Tao and Ko Pha Ngan. And it's not only the spam weblinks, also the article easily change into something like a travel guide, not encyclopedic articles. andy 22:19, 20 December 2006 (UTC)
