[edit]Hello. Thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia.
When editing Wikipedia, there is a field labeled "Edit summary" below the main edit box. It looks like this:
Edit summary (Briefly describe your changes)
I noticed your recent edit to List of historical tsunamis does not have an edit summary. Please be sure to provide a summary of every edit you make, even if you write only the briefest of summaries. The summaries are very helpful to people browsing an article's history.
Edit summary content is visible in:
Please use the edit summary to explain your reasoning for the edit, or a summary of what the edit changes. You can give yourself a reminder to add an edit summary by setting Preferences → Editing → Prompt me when entering a blank edit summary. Thanks! Dawnseeker2000 01:26, 17 January 2017 (UTC)
Hi, what was the reason for the removal? Thanks, Dawnseeker2000 01:27, 17 January 2017 (UTC)
- Hi. I confirmed that there was an earthquake in 1698 which caused some damage to Bungo Province (Oita Prefecture), but it is doubtful that it involved a large tsunami over Saikaido (not Seikaido) and Nankaido. I also have doubts about the date.
- According to Chronological Scientific Tables by National Astronomical Observatory of Japan, M6.0 earthquake hit Bungo Province on 1698-10-24, caused damage to Oita and Oka Castles, and shook the city of Saga. There is no mention of tsunami.
- Oita Prefecture Board of Education also states the damage to the castles and dates it to 1698-10-24. This one cites 府内藩記録 (The Records of Funai Domain) as primary source, so I think this date is most reliable.
- NOAA's entry for SEIKAIDO-NANKAIDO earthquake dates it to 1698-12-22, citing two sources as references, but neither of them use the term Saikaido or Nankaido.
- Catalog of tsunamis in Japan and its neighboring countries.: Epicenter:"Bungo, Ooita." Remarks: "Earthquake and tsunami."
- A catalogue of tsunamis on the western shore of the Pacific Ocean: "1698, December 22. A tsunami was observed on the coast of Bungo Strait and Oita Prefecture. There are no details. Possibly the date is mixed up and the data relate to some other tsunami." --Aiaiaiaiaia (talk) 10:13, 17 January 2017 (UTC)
