Anthony Preston[edit]

Hello, Alan!

Thanks for your edits to the Anthony Preston (naval historian) page. As you probably gathered, I was not aware when I created the article that Anthony Preston had died. Was it you who added his name to Deaths in 2004?

You seem to have an eye for detail; and for spotting subjects for new articles. Keep up the good work!

Sincere regards, John Moore 309 15:23, 14 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Alan,
The Anthony Preston (naval historian) page has been tagged - not unreasonably - as unreferenced ("This article does not cite its references or sources"). I have sources for all the biographical information except the date of his death. Can you help with that?
I have added this page to my watchlist, so you may reply here if you wish (or else simply update the article). Regards, John Moore 309 13:36, 23 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Maritime warfare task force[edit]

Alan,

Good news: Kirill Lokshin (talk · contribs) has recently created the Maritime warfare task force as part of the Military History project. Bad news: so far, it has only three members (the worst news is that one of them is me).

I think this would be a good forum for discussing of maritime warfare/naval history, exchanging ideas and establishing best practice at a more general level than the Ships project. If you are interested, can I suggest you pay a visit and, if you like what you see, sign up?

Toti class submarine[edit]

I see that you removed the nomination for speedy deletion that Popexvi (talk · contribs) had added to Toti class submarine. Since you were and are the article's only contributor, it's probably not the best idea if you are the one who removes the template, even if you believe that the article clearly doesn't qualify for speedy deletion. The next time something like this happens, it would be better to add a {{hangon}} template to the article, and explain on the talk page why you believe the article shouldn't be deleted. Please use edit summaries[edit]

Hello. Please be courteous to other editors and use edit summaries when updating articles. The Mathbot tool shows your usage of edit summaries to be extremely low:

Edit summary usage for Ala.foum: 0% for major edits and 50% for minor edits. Based on the last 150 major and 8 minor edits in the article namespace.

Using edit summaries helps other editors quickly understand your edits, which is especially useful when you make changes to articles that are on others' watchlists. Thanks and happy editing! --Kralizec! (talk) 21:27, 7 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Navigatori or... Neivighatoree?[edit]

Ciao! I've jumped on your article Navigatori destroyer class. Otherwise good, however the article was full of horrendous mistakes in the rendering of Italian names. I can really be sure that fault is not yours, by from the source you got the data from. Even though I'm used to them, I still can't understand why British historians are so prone to such errors when dealing with Italian names... We in Italy don't write HMS Illustrius or Arc Roial. Tell me if you need further help with similar articles. Bye and good work. --Attilios 09:24, 15 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Indian 4th Infantry Div[edit]

I see you've changed the reference from Indian Army to British Indian Army. I'm not sure this is correct since this unit was allocated to India on partition and still exists today as the 'Red Eagles'. Admittedly, the contents of the page cover only its history during the colonial period (because no-one has yet made the contribution....!) Hey there,
I was bold enough to create a new article after reading about the Otobreda gun on the a Dutch frigate page (and having a picture of one). Perhaps you can help me with some more information or background? :)
I'm particulary intrested in the naming of the gun/manufacturer. See: Talk:Otobreda_127/54_Compact.

License tagging for Image:Gromoboi.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Gromoboi.jpg. Wikipedia gets thousands of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.

For more information on using images, see the following pages:

Images from other Wikipedias[edit]

Hi. I noticed while going through images tagged for deletion for lacking adequate copyright information that you uploaded several images from other Wikipedias. If an image is unquestionably free of copyright restrictions (in other words, a user-created photo or obviously pre-1923), please consider uploading it to Wikimedia Commons. Images uploaded to Commons automatically show through to all Wikipedias, as long as we don't already have a file with the same name. There is a tool called Commons helper that copies all of the necessary information - all you have to do is add categories or add it to an appropriate Commons gallery. --BigDT 17:06, 12 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

submarines General Sanjuro and General Mola[edit]

Archimede class submarine and Spanish submarine C-3 contradict each other, the first says that Archimede was renamed General Sanjuro and Torricelli was renamed General Mola, whilst the latter says that Archimede was renamed General Mola and Torricelli was renamed General Sanjuro. This contradiction requires attention. Since you wrote the Archimede article, this is to inform you. 76.66.198.171 (talk) 08:14, 25 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Russian city infoboxes[edit]

Hi there! Just wanted to let you know that {{Infobox Russian city}} now redirects to more comprehensive {{Infobox Russian inhabited locality}}. The latter utilizes more standardized parameter names, although the majority of the old parameters are still supported.

For examples of how the new template is used in practice, please see Novosibirsk and Bolshoye Zagarino. Let me know if you have any questions or see any problems with the new template (bug reports are always appreciated). Cheers,—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); 21:06, August 26, 2009 (UTC)

The first one is actually already implemented—it's called current_cat_date and is supposed to hold the date on which the inhabited locality was granted its status (so, for cities it would be the date city status was granted, for urban-type settlements—the date on which that status was granted, etc.). The reference for this parameter goes into current_cat_date_ref. The status itself is recorded in the inhabloc_cat field. Novosibirsk is one article where you can see this used in practice.
Time zones is something I am currently working on. When implemented, this field will be populated automatically, so no extra work (and room for error!) is going to be created for our editors.
If you can think of anything else, please don't hesitate to let me know. Cheers,—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); 18:13, August 28, 2009 (UTC)

Infoboxes[edit]

Hi, Alan! I don't quite recall if I asked you before, but cCould you, please, utilize the new set parameters (as documented here) when deploying {{Infobox Russian inhabited locality}}? It is a pain in the ass to later switch the parameters from the deprecated set to the current version, and since you are adding these infoboxes fairly methodically, you are not only doing a good deed but also building a backlog of dirty work for someone else at the same time. Thank you for understanding! If you need assistance with this switch, please let me know. Happy holidays!—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); 15:20, December 23, 2009 (UTC)

You are now a Reviewer[edit]

Hello. Your account has been granted the "reviewer" userright, allowing you to review other users' edits on certain flagged pages. Pending changes, also known as flagged protection, will be commencing a two-month trial at approximately 23:00, 2010 June 15 (UTC).

Reviewers can review edits made by users who are not autoconfirmed to articles placed under flagged protection. Flagged protection is applied to only a small number of articles, similarly to how semi-protection is applied but in a more controlled way for the trial.

When reviewing, edits should be accepted if they are not obvious vandalism or BLP violations, and not clearly problematic in light of the reason given for protection (see Wikipedia:Reviewing process). More detailed documentation and guidelines can be found here.

If you do not want this userright, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. Courcelles (talk) 18:14, 15 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Leningradartist (talk) 16:06, 9 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Makhmut Gareev, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Bashkiria (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)
