Cymensora

Hi, @Alarichall . Thanks for your offer on W. A. R. Richardson, "The Owers" article. However, I already have a copy of the journal itself. Richardson is cited in the Cymenshore article. Check out citation reference numbers [17], [31], [39] and [52] (there maybe more!) and the reference section. When I started editing this article I found a lot of the sources quoted Hume Wallace on any literature to do with the Marine Archaeology of the area. He seems to be the only one who has done a full underwater survey of the waters around Selsey Unfortunately his findings were self published and copies of it were pretty limited. I do not believe it has been put online? However I managed to find a copy in the local library, hence why he is cited. The literature on Cymensora is very sparse possibly because it is associated with the foundation myth of Sussex? Under the External Links section there is a paper by William Pullen that asserts that Cymensora was probably named before/ during the Roman era after Commius (king of the Atrebates in Britain 51BC – 35BC). I think I did a quick search of the article for 'Journal of the English Place-Name Society', whereas the article has the title as 'English Place-Name Society Journal' (which is fair enough because the title page of the journal is, if I remember right, confusing in this regard). That's OK thanks for your interest. The Richardson article was fairly easy to get hold of, as were pretty much all of the references appart from, as I said, the Hume Wallace. It was difficult as his book is typewritten (probably using a typewriter not a wordprocessor even!!) so there are no soft copies of it that I know of unfortunately. Culture

Hi. If you have some time can you help out here? The article was a total train wreck and I made major revisions. The previous version had some material from Raymond Williams in it, but all jumbled up with anthropology and cultural studies was not named as a distinct approach or set of approaches. I deleted redundancies and fringe views and reorganized the rest so that distinct approaches were clear. That said, I am pretty weak on cultural studies. So I made a place in the article for it, but what I wrote could be off and is surely incomplete (my strength is in anthropology). I'd appreciate it if you could look at it soon and flesh out the differences between how anthropology and cultural studies understand and look at culture, clarify anything I muddled, and correct any mistakes. I do not think this article should replace the articles on cultural anthropology or on cultural studies, but I do think these disciplines provide important contexts for explaining different approaches to culture. Hello Alaric. As you've probably seen, I've restored the Icelandic Constitutional Assembly election, 2010 article. We have individual articles for almost every national election and referendum held in countries, and I see no reason why this one should be any different. Of course, there are elements that should be covered in both articles and they should be strongly interlinked, but the election article should remain a standalone one. Hi, Alaric. I am glad to see you take an interest in the Elf article. I enjoy your serious contributions.

With regard the unfortunate situation, Bloodofox is a cyber bully with a history of harassment and abusive editing. Even here is massive deletions rather than line-by-line considerations evidences his nonacademic agenda and aggression. He works persistently to delete and censor scholarly information that he dislikes. I had a bad experience earlier when he succeeded in renaming an other article without consensus and in a way that destroyed its history and information. I was unfamiliar with the administration of wikipedia, and the admins didnt seem to understand how the old article was destroyed. Heh, meanwhile I was in a panic. Please, help undo any future POV damage by Bloodofox.

Anyway, I look forward to working with you and others to try make the information about the Elf solid and nuanced. It is an important and fascinating topic. Haldrik (talk) 01:14, 6 May 2014 (UTC)

Editing of Hervarar saga ok Heiðreks

As you may not know, the article Hervarar saga ok Heiðreks was recently put up for deletion. It passed easily. See the results at [[1]].

But the proposer of the deletion had a valid point in that citations were rather lacking. I have attempted to improve the article by adding some.

However the one point I am stuck on is the matter of a supposed relationship between Heiðrek and Ermamaric. I don't know the source for this theory. Perhaps you do, and might edit the article appropriately. This theory was questioned by an anonymous user on the article talk page at Talk:Hervarar_saga_ok_Heiðreks and no response was made. I rather agree with the user but do not wish to make changes based only on that.

I don't agree, I'm afraid. I think Category:Icelandic writers ought to be depreciated - I think the category is too broad. I tried to put her in the requisite sub-categories - Category:Icelandic children's writers, for instance - and if I missed any, I'm sorry. But by and large I think all of the writers-by-nationality categories should be treated more and more like container categories; I think it's much better to categorize people by the types of writer that they are. In that case, perhaps you'd be so good as to do this for all the people categorised as Icelandic writers? At the moment, the outcome is sexist (with all but one male Icelandic writer being included as 'Icelandic writers' whereas women tend to be marginalised as 'Icelandic women writers'). That said, I note that Icelandic women writers contains a hatnote saying 'This is a non-diffusing subcategory of Category:Icelandic writers. It includes writers that can also be found in the parent category, or in diffusing subcategories of the parent.' So at the moment, your policy runs contrary to that hatnote. Thanks for the reply! Just to make sure we understand each other: I don't object to categorising Arndís in Category:Icelandic children's writers. But I do object to categorising her in Category:Icelandic women writers but not in the parent Category:Icelandic writers given that (a) male writers are not presently being treated in this way and (b) the hatnote for Category:Icelandic women writers makes it clear that people might belong both to the child category Category:Icelandic women writers and to the parent category Category:Icelandic writers. Hopefully your offer to 'clean up' Category:Icelandic writers does reflect an understanding of the sexism that the parent category currently exhibits! I'd be happy to sort it out myself, but don't want to do a load of edits if you're going to come and change them all!

Well...to the point that "male writers aren't being treated that way". They will do. I'm getting around to it - it's a slow task (made slower by the fact that my computer has been giving me troubles this weekend.) But I intend on parity with both - I'm not singling out women writers in any way. It's just that we have the categories in place for women writers which we don't, as much, for male writers, so it's easier to start there and work my way away from it.

As for the point that people might belong to both categories...well, yes, technically they might. But I think having people in a generic "writers" category, when they're already in subcategories, tends to make things needlessly confusing. Duplicate refs

Just been reading through all your great articles and tagging them as reviewed...but there's no need to type in every reference five times! Just use the cite tool (which lets you paste in an ISBN and build the ref, too), type a name for the reference into refname, hit preview, and then you can choose the reference from 'named references' and insert the same one in anywhere. Thanks for the suggestion. I'm not entirely convinced about this method. I see that the changes you made to Sigurðar saga fóts have removed the precise page numbers from some of the references, leaving readers to hunt around the article trying to find where particular issues are discussed. I should probably get round to seeing what other options Wikipedia has for referencing, but I'm quite comfortable just putting in full and precise references each time, in the knowledge that if that if one section of the page gets rewritten, the references elsewhere won't be affected :-) Alarichall (talk) 12:38, 17 January 2016 (UTC)

I don't understand. The article is written in English, not in Icelandic, so I can't translate it into English. I see that the note added to the page also says 'This article is written in Iceland. If it is intended for readers from the Iceland language community, it should be contributed to the Wikipedia in that language. See the list of Wikipedias.' But the article meets the usual criteria for notability for books, and I don't see why English-speakers should be deprived of an opportunity to read about it. Hi! Union Atlantic was listed at WP:CP because of the very long quotation, which I've just removed as quite out of proportion to the length of the page. Now I find that you were never notified. I'm truly sorry about that (and yes, I should have checked that before I did anything else), but don't feel that it is appropriate to restore the quote. In general, quotations should make up – at most – only a small percentage of article text, and should only be added where they are the subject of discussion in the article. Hi there @Thomas.W:! I take your point that Wikipedia editors referencing their own academic publications is sensitive. Re your deletion of the mention of útrásarvíkingar in Vikings, would you be happy if I reinstate the prose with different references? (I cited my piece because the pages cited refer quite comprehensively to past work, but I can just as well cite that work directly.) Re your editing of Töfrahöllin, we now have an awkward situation where the identifications of sources that I made are still in the article, but now with no reference. What would you prefer here? In Vikings it would be OK to reinstate the material with different sources, and in Töfrahöllin it would be best to remove it all, if there are no "neutral" sources available. Wikipedia has very strict rules regarding COI editing, including that editors should never add their own material (even people who are widely acknowledged as experts in their fields have been indefinitely blocked from editing here, and had their websites/publications blacklisted, for doing it...). I haven't looked at the rest of your edits, but the same rules would of course apply there... - Tom | Thomas.W ^talk 11:52, 28 June 2018 (UTC)

We can do that then. But, for future reference, I think you might have misread the COI guidance on citing yourself. It says 'Using material you have written or published is allowed within reason, but only if it is relevant, conforms to the content policies, including WP:SELFPUB, and is not excessive. Citations should be in the third person and should not place undue emphasis on your work. When in doubt, defer to the community's opinion: propose the edit on the article's talk page and allow others to review it' (Wikipedia:SELFCITE). What I wrote is what most other editors seem to feel, and the edits by you that I reverted were sourced only to your own material, which definitely is "excessive", especially since your comment further up in this thread says that other sources also exist, at least for your edit on Vikings. Well, sort of. As it says at WP:REFSPAM, 'citation spamming is a subtle form of spam and should not be confused with legitimate good-faith additions intended to verify article content and help build the encyclopedia.' WP:REFSPAM also says "Citation spamming is a form of search engine optimization or promotion that typically involves the repeated insertion of a particular citation or reference in multiple articles by a single contributor. Often these are added not to verify article content but rather to populate numerous articles with a particular citation", which seems to be a good description of the edits in question, especially since you admitted you could have used other references. @Farang Rak Tham: The general conflict of interest rules can be found at Wikipedia:Conflict of interest, and the shortcut to using own sources (which is a subsection of the COI rules) is WP:SELFCITE. Using own publications as sources is allowed "within reason, but only if it is relevant, conforms to the content policies, including WP:SELFPUB, and is not excessive". (edit conflict) I suspect that Alarichall has added his books or articles to too many wiki articles. However, you should provide more than one example, so other editors can follow, especially when you are accusing someone of a thing like a COI, which can lead to serious measures quite easily. It also seems a far stretch to go from a violation of selfcite to a full-fledged COI, especially when it concerns a scholar in a field with nearly no real-life consequences, and no political or economical interests. To put it bluntly, someone having an certain scholarly opinion about dwarves or elves is not a COI—at worst, it is UNDUE and should be tagged as such. User's are allowed to remove anything from their own talk pages, except declined unblock requests while still blocked. Removing content is simply seen as a confirmation of having read whatever messages/warnings they have received. As the talk page to Post Classical History has become increasingly confused, I have decided to reply to you here. I appreciated the link you sent me. I think this information could be used in many places in the Post Classical Article, such as the End of Period section as well. I am excited to see that historians are taking a more theoretical approach52 in handling the way we structure history. I in particular remember the 'One God World' they mentioned.

Also, though I noticed what they said about the Black Death contradicts one of my maps. The source claims that there has not been evidence found of the Black Death occuring in the Delhi Sultante or the Yuan Dynasty in the 1347- 52 time frame. Do you have any thoughts on this issue in particular? I remember before looking for plauge information and seeing claims of it moving east but no primary sources.

@Sunriseshore: Thanks! Yes, this was just the kind of thing I was thinking of. I haven't forgotten about the Post-Classical page: I've just been busy with the day job lately. I look forward to working on this, including making use of this article :-) At the moment the circumpolar region is implicitly covered in the Americas and Eurasia sections. Might I suggest that we try to lift the circumpolar region out as a separate section, on a par with 'History by region in the Old-World', 'Eurasia', 'Oceania', etc.? This would primarily involve moving 'Norse Contact and the Polar Regions' into a new 'Circumpolar region' section, and developing it. In terms of secondary reading, I was going to start with the article here and this one: doi:10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199271016.013.0026. (The latter might be available via sci-hub or libgen?) GA review for satyr

Hello! Farang Rak Tham told me that you study mythology and I know you wrote most of the article "Elf," so I was wondering if you would be interested in reviewing the article "Satyr," which I have recently nominated for GA status. I took this article on as a project a few weeks ago because, all the way back when I was in fourth grade, there was a boy in my class who thought (apparently in all seriousness) that I was secretly a satyr disguised as a person. That was how I was first introduced to Greek mythology and, from there, ancient cultures in general. As I grew older, I learned that the original horse-like Greek satyrs were far more obscene than the relatively tame goat-legged ones my elementary school friends and I knew from reading children's fantasy literature. Nonetheless, I still find satyrs interesting because they fall in the uncanny "twilight zone" between the human and the divine, much like the elves you yourself have written about. (In fact, classicist M. L. West has argued that satyrs and elves share a common Indo-European heritage, a possibility which is discussed in the first section of the article.) Why?

Hello, I can understand why you reverted my edits on poems and on Phonological history of Old English, first I wanted ask about that, but yes, it also has the References page. So bad.

But what's wrong with my edits on Swithun? I just changed the orthography a bit, it's a minor point, it's how the name would actually look in Old English. And then sƿiþ, what harm would it be to stay written with Ƿynn? That's only a word, it doesn't deal with any reference! It was such a minor change, 'cause I'm perfectly aware I'm not allowed to do any more, but no, it should be reverted too. Please, may it stay? Hi there, Birdofadozentides! The thing is that no professional editor of Old English transcribes wynn with ƿ: everyone uses w. It doesn't make sense for Wikipedia to use idiosyncratic spelling that no-one else is using: it's confusing for readers and inconsistent with scholarly consensus. Sorry for answering so late, I don't know why your answer didn't appear in my notifications before. "idiosyncratic spelling that no-one else is using"? It's the original spelling of Old English! There was no such letter as w in Old English, and the fact that the whole world suddenly desided to use it instead of Ƿynn, the actual Old English letter, doesn't make it right. "confusing for readers"? at least the readers will know the truth, they'll read more about it, perhaps it could be the first time they would hear about Ƿynn.

"inconsistent with scholarly consensus?" Why scholarly consensus means more than original manuscrits, why modern editions mean more than manuscrits? Wikipedia could make a change and not support that traditon, but what am talking about, of course, no.

It's only two words. Why cannot just two word stay with Ƿynn? What if we write two options, one with that "beloved" letter and the other one with Ƿynn? Using it: " / " I'm kind of disgusted by this variant, but if it's the only way the words could stay with Ƿynn, I'd have to agree. And there will be no "confusing for readers" then. Please. Hello, Alaric. Germanic paganism could use more eyes. We've got a user over there adding (and re-adding) material such as "the earth goddess known as Vanir and the god of war, Aesir" without any notable intervention beyond my own efforts. In need of advice

There is an ongoing dispute in the Post Classical History article, some users have said the section I wrote on Polyoneisan-South American contact was promoting fringe theories. However, the purpose of the section was to simply show, that there is an argument, on the issue. Also my sources include Cambridge University, and the American Society for Archaeology. The source given is extremely poor. Note the usage of the word "assume" on stated page, for instance. Pre-70 AD date very common in doing a google search. I did not supply a reference, since the second line backed up the first. The source you're suggesting is a website rather than, say, a university textbook or peer-reviewed scholarly article. I had a look at information about CARM, the organisation that hosts the page, on its homepage, and it says 'CARM is a 501(c)3, non-profit, Christian ministry dedicated to the glory of the Lord Jesus Christ and the promotion and defense of the Christian Gospel, doctrine, and theology'. So this is probably not the most objective organisation to be sourcing information from. I'm not saying that the stuff on that page about the dating of the Gospels can't be improved -- just that good quality, scholarly sources are needed, particularly on a topic like this, where different people's religious views might make editing contentious. @Alarichall: Yes, I understand that a book source is vastly superior to one online, and that the person behind the online source is critical. I suppose, maybe, it's just far too controversial of a topic to be wrapped up in one sentence, since there is so much difference of opinion as to the exact dates. I'm going to research more next time, before making a change. I noticed that the stated reference book (in the article), has a question mark in the title. The author is presenting a rare view that the "virgin birth" was spiritual not historical. Nonetheless, seemingly quite a scholar in theology. PS. After a successful first iteration of the “Months of African Cinema” last year, we are happy to announce that it will be happening again this year, starting from October 1! In the 2018 edition of the contest, about 600 Wikipedia articles were created in at least 8 languages. There were also contributions to Wikidata and Wikimedia commons, which brought the total number of wikimedia pages created during the contest to over 1,000.

Sugar edit

On my talk page, you said: You reverted an edit I made to Sugar with the comment 'no significant improvements', but I made two or three significant improvements:

• At the moment the article implies that the word sugar was borrowed directly from Persian to French, whereas it was actually borrowed via Arabic, as I indicated in my edit.
• I added a reference to the Oxford English Dictionary, which is a more reliable source than the website previously cited.
• I copy-edited the text for clarity.

I wonder, then, if you'd see your way to reinstating the edit? Thanks!

The differences between the existing content and your edit here were intermediate steps covered in the EOD source. I felt your edit added unnecessary intermediate details uncritical to the actual etymology leading to the English, sugar; we also don't mention uses from Greek, Spanish, Italian, etc., WP:NOTEVERYTHING. --Zefr (talk) 17:59, 13 January 2020 (UTC)

So I get that you might think that English Wikipedia should only deal with the etymologies of English words. (Rather limiting in my view, but there we go.) But at the moment the article implies that the word travelled directly from Persian to French, which is misleading. If you want to cut out intermediate steps in Wikipedia's account of the transmission of the word, you might as well edit the article to say that the word sugar comes from Sanskrit. I don't know what your status is ("lecturer" in the US is a shitty position, but for you guys it's different, I believe), but I've started including the articles I wrote on my annual reports, including DYKs with page views--my chair, and the dean, approve and we are about to include "this kind of writing" in the tenure requirements as an option. Anglo-Saxon settlement (linguistics)

Hi Alarichall, this is CelticBrain. I don't know whether you've had a chance to look at the changes I've made on Celtic language decline in England but I was hoping to take some of those edits up to the linguistics section of the broader Anglo-Saxon settlement page. I've mocked up a version of what I intend to do in my user sandbox (which I can link if you want). I do understand, though, if you have a lot of work going on and are unable to attend to this at the moment--I just wanted to make sure we were in agreement before I went ahead with any editing.

Broadly, though, most of my would-be edits involve the incorporation of more recent work that argues, as many scholars seem to be doing nowadays, that the level of Anglo-Saxon migration, and by extension the ways by which Old English spread, varied from place to place. Also, for the "debate" and "place names" sections I've tried to limit the references to language scholars.

Hello, this is sunriseshore. The Postclassical guy, you might recall we had some great discussions foour years ago. I am back on Wikipedia perhaps just for a short time. I don't usually edit in very contentious areas of Wikipedia, but no, I've never had anyone harass me using my real-life identity for work I do on Wikimedia projects. @Ermenrich:-just as a word of caution, I've had some super negative experiences with this. Editing a few new religious movement articles in particular resulted in adherents sending me death threats and once the son of a scholar I added to an article about attempted to track me down. Instead, he seems to have harassed some poor soul at his workplace in New England unrelated to me—and all for adding WP:RS-compliant material he preferred was not on his father's Wikipedia page (specifically this material). The Wikimedia Foundation was not remotely helpful. From my experience, you may be opening yourself up to a lot of harassment, some of it from unexpected quarters. :bloodofox: (talk) 21:41, 1 November 2022 (UTC)

I can understand your reversion. I did indeed fumble-finger "8th or 9th century"; my new bifocals are not as good for typing and proofreading as my old readers, witness my recent track record of having to go back for minor edits. No original research, though; everything is at the Old English rune poem page I wikilinked, including the pic file of the verses. What jumped out at me was the same time range for the documents using the dotted ẏ. To the extent I was "original" at all, it was picking out the example of bẏþ as the word to look at, since (a) it was short, and (b) it heads most of the (non-runic text) first lines of stanzas. I could as easily have gone on with examples (ᵹehƿẏlcum, pẏꞃþꞅcẏpe, hꞃẏꞅteꝺ,...), but this article wasn't about that. I leave it to you to decide. – _•Raven  ^.talk 12:15, 12 April 2023 (UTC)

Thanks for the message and sorry for not replying more promptly. Yes, I think you've misunderstood what's going on here. In Old English scripts it's normal for the letter 'y' to have a dot over it—this doesn't just happen in the Rune Poem, and is just part of how scribes wrote that letter. The "annotation symbol resembling a rune-like dotted ‘Y’" described as appearing in the Harley Prayerbook isn't the same thing at all—it's just that the description given here makes it sound like this symbol looks like a dotted 'y'. Átta revert

Hello. To further explain my revert on Átta, the Pitchfork citation at the end of the sentence said that Sigur Rós would be debuting songs from the album on the tour, and they did. I thought that was pretty clear without specifying that the tour was "in support of the album", but I've added wording clarifying that now. Tours in support of albums, or even a tour that is not explicitly named after the contemporaneous album but on which songs from the album are played live for the first time generally always warrant at least a mention on the album's article. That's what I did here. As for it being "outdated", it could have simply been changed to read that they embarked on the tour, not "will embark". Thanks. Ss112 07:27, 8 September 2023 (UTC)

The Wikipedia Asian Month 2023[1] is coming ! The campaign start within a flexible 30 days from November to December. Following with the changes of the rules made by last year, the wish to have more people get to know Asia and Asian related topic is the same! Click "Here" to Organize/Join a WAM Event.

1. Propose "Focus Theme" related to Asia !

If you are based somewhere in Asia, or have specific passion on an Asian topic, please propose your "Focus Theme" by October 25th. The WAM international team will select 5 themes. Please propose your focus theme through this link[2].

2. Enhancing existing articles can also count as part of campaign contribution.

Any edits, including creating new articles or adding new content to existing articles, over 3000 bytes in total would be able to get a reward. Last year, due to this change of rules, the Programs & Events Dashboard was suggested. However, according to community survey of 2022, Fountain Tool is still the best platform for tracking edit and points. You don’t need to create any Dashboard. For the tracking of editing existing article, the international team is currently designing a form. Will soon publish to the main page of WAM 2023.

3. More flexible campaign time

The contribution duration would remain 30days, but we extended the overall campaign timeline to 2 months. All organizers can decide when to start their WAM as long as the whole duration is within November 1st to December 31th. It means that you can participate in WAM based on the needs of your local community.

Timetable

• October 1st, 2023 : Publish International Campaign Page of the Year
• October 5th to 25th, 2023 : Call for focus themes of WAM 2023.
• Before 29 October, 2023: Complete Registration [3] of Each language Wikipedia.
• November 1st, UTC 00:00 to December 31th, UTC 00:00, 2023: Running the Campaign. (Find your local campaign for the actual event date.)
• January 1st to March 15th, 2024: Auditing of each language Wikipedia.
• March 30th, 2024: Deadline of reporting statistics and eligible editors to the International Team
• April 1st to May 15th, 2024: The international team distributes Barnstars and Certificates to eligible editors of each event.
