Hi Alric!

It's just great that you take pity on Wikipedia and the work of us geeks who populate it. Your edits as an anonymous user were all excellent; I especially appreciate those you made on elf! I certainly hope you will continue to improve the quality of this site! Regards --Salleman [talk] 4 July 2005 14:01 (UTC)

De Locis Sanctis[edit]

Copyright-problem.svg

This is an automated message from CorenSearchBot. I have performed a web search with the contents of De Locis Sanctis, and it appears to include a substantial copy of http://www.ezgeography.com/encyclopedia/Arculf. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from other web sites or printed material; such additions will be deleted. You may use external websites as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences.

This message was placed automatically, and it is possible that the bot is confused and found similarity where none actually exists. If that is the case, you can remove the tag from the article and it would be appreciated if you could drop a note on the maintainer's talk page. CorenSearchBot (talk) 11:39, 1 April 2008 (UTC)

Culture[edit]

Hi. If you have some time can you help out here? The article was a total train wreck and I made major revisions. The previous version had some material from Raymond Williams in it, but all jumbled up with anthropology and cultural studies was not named as a distinct approach or set of approaches. I deleted redundancies and fringe views and reorganized the rest so that distinct approaches were clear. That said, I am pretty weak on cultural studies. So I made a place in the article for it, but what I wrote could be off and is surely incomplete (my strength is in anthropology). I'd appreciate it if you could look at it soon and flesh out the differences between how anthropology and cultural studies understand and look at culture, clarify anything I muddled, and correct any mistakes. I do not think this article should replace the articles on cultural anthropology or on cultural studies, but I do think these disciplines provide important contexts for explaining different approaches to culture. Completely missing is a section on "cultural history," which I hope you know something about. Thanks, Slrubenstein | Talk 00:00, 21 January 2009 (UTC)

Thanks - I have done everything I could on anthropology's approach to "culture" and the article is out of balance, the thing to do is to add a strong section on cultural studies' approach to culture. I sure hope you can help. I hope this is a good holiday for you, Slrubenstein | Talk 23:39, 22 February 2009 (UTC)

Nazi, Swastika References Being Purged from Syrian Social Nationalist Party[edit]

Would you mind having a look at the problem of the Syrian Social Nationalist Party's Nazi history and swastika flag being systematically deleted/vandalized? This removes an important aspect of neutrality from the article. References from many reliable sources are provided. See its talk page. The edits are being done by users with IP addresses from very similar domains. Thanks, Histopher Critchens (talk) 20:31, 25 February 2009 (UTC)

Hi, I'm Carriearchdale. Alarichall, thanks for creating Mary 'Ajami!

I've just tagged the page, using our page curation tools, as having some issues to fix. Perhaps you could choose some appropriate categories near the bottom of the article to help improve the overall article and make the article more easily searchable by wikipedia users. Thanks!

Merge[edit]

Hello Alaric. As you've probably seen, I've restored the Icelandic Constitutional Assembly election, 2010 article. We have individual articles for almost every national election and referendum held in countries, and I see no reason why this one should be any different. Of course, there are elements that should be covered in both articles and they should be strongly interlinked, but the election article should remain a standalone one. Deletion discussion about Huda Sha'arawi[edit]

Hello, Alarichall,

I wanted to let you know that there's a discussion about whether Huda Sha'arawi should be deleted. Your comments are welcome at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Huda Sha'arawi .

If you're new to the process, articles for deletion is a group discussion (not a vote!) that usually lasts seven days. If you need it, there is a guide on how to contribute. Last but not least, you are highly encouraged to continue improving the article; just be sure not to remove the tag about the deletion nomination from the top.

Thanks, Staglit (talk) 21:37, 22 April 2014 (UTC)

Elf[edit]

Hi, Alaric. I am glad to see you take an interest in the Elf article. I enjoy your serious contributions.

With regard the unfortunate situation, Bloodofox is a cyber bully with a history of harassment and abusive editing. Even here is massive deletions rather than line-by-line considerations evidences his nonacademic agenda and aggression. He works persistently to delete and censor scholarly information that he dislikes. I had a bad experience earlier when he succeeded in renaming an other article without consensus and in a way that destroyed its history and information. I was unfamiliar with the administration of wikipedia, and the admins didnt seem to understand how the old article was destroyed. Heh, meanwhile I was in a panic. Please, help undo any future POV damage by Bloodofox.

Anyway, I look forward to working with you and others to try make the information about the Elf solid and nuanced. It is an important and fascinating topic. Haldrik (talk) 01:14, 6 May 2014 (UTC)

Thanks Haldrik. I don't know the work of either you or bloodofox at all well and will be happy to judge matters without prejudice. As I say, including edit summaries will help! Looking forward likewise to collaborating in future. Alarichall (talk) 11:44, 6 May 2014 (UTC)

Hans[edit]

Hi. I read your excellent blog post after seeing it in the Signpost, and had a go at editing Hans Jonatan to make the refs easier to understand. A few pictures in that article would definitely improve it, and it would be interesting to know whether this one is old enough to be in the public domain. There might also exist a picture of the ruins of the house he lived in. Jamesx12345 14:19, 13 May 2014 (UTC)

Hey, thanks Jamesx12345! For the compliment but also for the work on that entry. Good idea about the pictures. It'll be a few weeks before I can follow it up, but I'll email the people behind the website you linked to and also Gísli, who's writing Hans's biography and has some relevant photos, to see if I can get any.
Sounds great. I've also created him a page on is.wiki (one line from Google translate, my sincere apologies for the bad wording) and linked them on Wikidata. Jamesx12345 15:35, 14 May 2014 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of Icelandic municipal elections, 2014[edit]

Hello Alarichall,

I wanted to let you know that I just tagged Icelandic municipal elections, 2014 for deletion, because it doesn't appear to contain any encyclopedic content. Take a look at our suggestions for essential content in short articles to learn what should be included.

If you feel that the article shouldn't be deleted and want more time to work on it, you can contest this deletion, but please don't remove the speedy deletion tag from the top.

Eric Julius Biörner[edit]

This is an automated message from CorenSearchBot. I have performed a search with the contents of Eric Julius Biörner, and it appears to be very similar to another Wikipedia page: Erik Julius Biörner. It is possible that you have accidentally duplicated contents, or made an error while creating the page— you might want to look at the pages and see if that is the case. If you are intentionally trying to rename an article, please see Help:Moving a page for instructions on how to do this without copying and pasting. If you are trying to move or copy content from one article to a different one, please see Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia and be sure you have acknowledged the duplication of material in an edit summary to preserve attribution history.

It is possible that the bot is confused and found similarity where none actually exists. If that is the case, you can remove the tag from the article. CorenSearchBot (talk) 18:07, 8 January 2015 (UTC)

  • Hello, I see that this was due to copying the content into a new article with the proper spelling. For future reference, please note that the preferred way to rename a page is to do a Move from the "More" menu up by the search bar. Doing a copy-paste move causes problems keeping the edit history intact, which is needed for the license we publish under. I've requested a fix for this one, and am just letting you know for future cases like this. Thanks for your work! CrowCaw 23:49, 12 January 2015 (UTC)

Editing of Hervarar saga ok Heiðreks[edit]

As you may not know, the article Hervarar saga ok Heiðreks was recently put up for deletion. It passed easily. See the results at [[1]].

But the proposer of the deletion had a valid point in that citations were rather lacking. I have attempted to improve the article by adding some.

However the one point I am stuck on is the matter of a supposed relationship between Heiðrek and Ermamaric. I don't know the source for this theory. Perhaps you do, and might edit the article appropriately. This theory was questioned by an anonymous user on the article talk page at Talk:Hervarar_saga_ok_Heiðreks and no response was made. I rather agree with the user but do not wish to make changes based only on that.

Arndís Þórarinsdóttir[edit]

I don't agree, I'm afraid. I think Category:Icelandic writers ought to be depreciated - I think the category is too broad. I tried to put her in the requisite sub-categories - Category:Icelandic children's writers, for instance - and if I missed any, I'm sorry. But by and large I think all of the writers-by-nationality categories should be treated more and more like container categories; I think it's much better to categorize people by the types of writer that they are. It's more properly specific, I think. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 00:02, 18 September 2015 (UTC)

In that case, perhaps you'd be so good as to do this for all the people categorised as Icelandic writers? At the moment, the outcome is sexist (with all but one male Icelandic writer being included as 'Icelandic writers' whereas women tend to be marginalised as 'Icelandic women writers'). That said, I note that Icelandic women writers contains a hatnote saying 'This is a non-diffusing subcategory of Category:Icelandic writers. It includes writers that can also be found in the parent category, or in diffusing subcategories of the parent.' So at the moment, your policy runs contrary to that hatnote. Alarichall (talk) 07:43, 18 September 2015 (UTC)
I'm sorry, but in what way? It says "or in diffusing subcategories of the parent" - Category:Icelandic children's writers is a diffusing subcategory of the parent, no? I will do what I can to clean up the parent cat - it's far from the only writers-by-nationality category which requires it - but it's going to take some time. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 16:28, 18 September 2015 (UTC)
Thanks for the reply! Just to make sure we understand each other: I don't object to categorising Arndís in Category:Icelandic children's writers. But I do object to categorising her in Category:Icelandic women writers but not in the parent Category:Icelandic writers given that (a) male writers are not presently being treated in this way and (b) the hatnote for Category:Icelandic women writers makes it clear that people might belong both to the child category Category:Icelandic women writers and to the parent category Category:Icelandic writers. Hopefully your offer to 'clean up' Category:Icelandic writers does reflect an understanding of the sexism that the parent category currently exhibits! I'd be happy to sort it out myself, but don't want to do a load of edits if you're going to come and change them all!
Well...to the point that "male writers aren't being treated that way". They will do. I'm getting around to it - it's a slow task (made slower by the fact that my computer has been giving me troubles this weekend.) But I intend on parity with both - I'm not singling out women writers in any way. It's just that we have the categories in place for women writers which we don't, as much, for male writers, so it's easier to start there and work my way away from it.
As for the point that people might belong to both categories...well, yes, technically they might. But I think having people in a generic "writers" category, when they're already in subcategories, tends to make things needlessly confusing. There are times when it's appropriate, yes, but I think the category tree for Icelandic writers is diverse enough that breaking it down is easier. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 16:59, 19 September 2015 (UTC)
Cool, thanks. I'll see if I can get it done myself :-) Good luck getting the computer to behave! Alarichall (talk) 17:18, 19 September 2015 (UTC)

Duplicate refs[edit]

Just been reading through all your great articles and tagging them as reviewed...but there's no need to type in every reference five times! Just use the cite tool (which lets you paste in an ISBN and build the ref, too), type a name for the reference into refname, hit preview, and then you can choose the reference from 'named references' and insert the same one in anywhere. Blythwood (talk) 06:25, 17 January 2016 (UTC)

Thanks for the suggestion. I'm not entirely convinced about this method. I see that the changes you made to Sigurðar saga fóts have removed the precise page numbers from some of the references, leaving readers to hunt around the article trying to find where particular issues are discussed. I should probably get round to seeing what other options Wikipedia has for referencing, but I'm quite comfortable just putting in full and precise references each time, in the knowledge that if that if one section of the page gets rewritten, the references elsewhere won't be affected :-) Alarichall (talk) 12:38, 17 January 2016 (UTC)
Thanks for doing all this reviewing though! Alarichall (talk) 12:46, 17 January 2016 (UTC)

Invitation from Wikipedia Asian Month 2016[edit]

Thanks for partipating Wikipedia Asian Month last year, and I hope you enjoy it. Last year, more than 7,000 articles contribute to Wikipedia in 43 languages in Wikipedia Asian Month, making us one of the largest event on Wikipedia. We will organize this event again in upcoming November, and would like to invite you join us again.

This year, we are lowering down the standards that you only need to create 4 (Four) articles to receive a postcard (new design), and articles only need to be more than 3,000 bytes and 300 words. We are also improving our postcard sending process, e.g. making the postcards right now, and collecting the address after the event ends without waiting other languges.

Wikipedians who create the most articles on each Wikipedia will be honored as "Wikipedia Asian Ambassadors". We will send you both digital copy, and a paper copy of the Ambassador certificate.

Thank you for considering! --AddisWang (talk)

Your article Mörg eru ljónsins eyru[edit]

Information icon Welcome, and thank you for contributing the page Mörg eru ljónsins eyru to Wikipedia. While you have added the page to the English version of Wikipedia, the article is not in English. We invite you to translate it into English. It has been listed at Pages Needing Translation, but if it is not translated within two weeks, the article will be listed for deletion. Thank you. Kostas20142 (talk) 13:29, 18 March 2017 (UTC)

I don't understand. The article is written in English, not in Icelandic, so I can't translate it into English. I see that the note added to the page also says 'This article is written in Iceland. If it is intended for readers from the Iceland language community, it should be contributed to the Wikipedia in that language. See the list of Wikipedias.' But the article meets the usual criteria for notability for books, and I don't see why English-speakers should be deprived of an opportunity to read about it.
