User talk:AlexNewArtBot/OregonSearchResult

Hi, I'm not sure you watch the talk page, there, could you take a look? We have a concern about the bot missing articles. Thanks! (and thanks again for your great bot!) Katr67 (talk) 19:22, 10 January 2008 (UTC)

Build in a Delay?

Hi -- I had one thought while writing Wei Sili this morning -- if it's possible and not too difficult to do, I have a suggestion. If the article had a {{underconstruction}} tag at the time that the bot scanned for it, that the bot log it and go back to it later at a point when the {{underconstruction}} tag was removed. This should yield more accurate results as far as what the article is actually about. --Nlu (talk) 16:55, 22 January 2008 (UTC)

False positive - Brian Smith (politician)

The article Brian Smith (politician) was falsely put by the bot in User:AlexNewArtBot/19thCenturySearchResult. A reading of that stub reveals that the article's subject clearly has nothing to do with the 19th century.

If this helps to improve the bot, I speculate that the article was probably listed because of the reference titled "Electoral History of British Columbia 1871-1986". Miss Madeline | Talk to Madeline 05:18, 31 January 2008 (UTC)

Bot missing matches (New Zealand)

A couple of us have noticed articles we've created not getting listed when they ought to match the rules for New Zealand. We've started a list of these at User_talk:AlexNewArtBot/NZSearchResult#Missed_articles - any thoughts on why they missed are welcome. dramatic (talk) 08:37, 17 February 2008 (UTC)

  • I have tweaked the rules. Lets see if the results became better Alex Bakharev (talk) 09:11, 17 February 2008 (UTC)

Bot missing matches (Italy)

I have been surprised to see the list of new Italy-related articles dry up in recent weeks, but I put it down to fewer of them being created. In its latest run, however, the bot missed one of mine—Elvo—which had lots of Italy-related words, categories and links in it and is indeed about an Italian river. I wonder whether it is mssing others? Short answer is yes: it also missed Biellese Prealps. But can anything be done? It’s a tremendously good tool and it used to work very well. —Ian Spackman (talk) 15:25, 21 February 2008 (UTC)

  • I have tweaked the rules to make them more inclusive, but it appears that there was some network problem for the bot. Anyway lets see what will happen Alex Bakharev (talk) 12:23, 22 February 2008 (UTC)

(not yet written)

It seems as if the 'pedia has now been including "(not yet written)" as part of the link alt= for red links. It's a minor thing, but you might have to alter bot coding to avoid the alt, such as on User:AlexNewArtBot/PlantsSearchResult where a red-linked users name in the {{user}} template points to Mousumi Bannerjee (not yet written) (talk · contribs) instead of Mousumi Bannerjee (talk · contribs). --Rkitko (talk) 18:22, 23 February 2008 (UTC)

WikiProject Sheffield Wednesday

Hi Alex,

I have (hopefully) set up the bot to scan for Sheffield Wednesday related new articles. Please could you have a quick look at the rules etc that I have set up to see if you can see any problems with them?

I also have a few of questions:

  • How often does the bot run?
  • How and where does the bot post the list of matching new articles? (I intended to set the bot up to post new articles at the bottom of Wikipedia:WikiProject Sheffield Wednesday/New articles; have I done it correctly?)
  • What happens if the bot does not find any new articles that satisfy the rules?

Maybe it would be worth adding an FAQ on the bot user page to answer these and other commonly asked questions to save you a bit of time!

Thanks very much, Dan1980 (talk | stalk) 00:43, 28 February 2008 (UTC)

Dan, you have missed a step in creating your entry - the final one of telling the bot to add your rules to the search (see User:AlexNewArtBot#Inform the bot about the new job for it).
The bot runs daily, first it archives any old entries of full pages and then at approx 15:00 UTC it starts posting results to each page, finishing 3-4 hours later (Although sometimes its run at odd times but generally 15:00 is around the start time).
If you don't set a target for the results, it will still publish them on your entry's search result page at User:AlexNewArtBot/SheffieldWednesdaySearchResult.
If the bot doesn't find any that satisfy your rules, check User:AlexNewArtBot/SheffieldWednesdayLog (which is posted after every run) as you may find it rejected or accepted a number or articles erroneously due to weighting. You can then tweak this for the next run. Generally speaking, it will probably take 2-3 runs of the bot (followed by rule tweaking) before you get the bulk of the articles you want to see (this is why the AssociationFootball ruleset is now so complicated).
Hope that helps somewhat, Nanonic (talk) 12:54, 28 February 2008 (UTC)
Doh! Can't believe I forgot to do that! Thanks for all the info. Dan1980 (talk | stalk) 13:31, 28 February 2008 (UTC)
Thanks for sorting out the rules for me too, as you can probably tell, I'm not very good with this sort of thing! Dan1980 (talk | stalk) 13:56, 28 February 2008 (UTC)

Just one little thing

Hello Alex. Can you please add "bayou" to the rules at User:AlexNewArtBot/Waterbodies? I am not good in such technical things and I fear I would screw it up. Thank you very much. - Darwinek (talk) 14:26, 10 March 2008 (UTC)

Added myself, hope I didn't mess up. - Darwinek (talk) 16:17, 10 March 2008 (UTC)

Hi, there seems to be a small anomaly at Wikipedia:New articles (Pakistan)#New articles suggested by Bot evenrsince the bot started archiving.--IslesCapeTalk 10:46, 21 April 2008 (UTC)

Logged in?

Is the bot not logged in? I'm noticing changes to User:AlexNewArtBot/MississippiSearchResult by an IP address instead of by User:AlexNewArtBot. - ALLST☆R echo 22:19, 26 May 2008 (UTC)

Hi Alex, I want to wote for you but I can't Log in into Wikipedia mi Username was "Doborjginidze", my another Usernname "Education Credit Union of Georgia". If you can help me please e-mail me Sincerly, D. Doborjginidze. (talk) 04:09, 6 June 2008 (UTC)

I need help renaming about 200 articles. Doing this by hand would take me all day.

Can your bot rename articles, or be adapted to do so?

If so, please contact me.

Thank you.

WikiProject Video games

A fellow project member found your bot, and I'm interested in using it for our project. I understand the general way that it works, but is there some documentation to help with the rules? Thanks, MrKIA11 (talk) 16:55, 4 July 2008 (UTC)

Is the bot working at the moment?

I can't believe there havve been no new articles mentioning New Zealand for three whole days! dramatic (talk) 01:07, 1 August 2008 (UTC)

The bot owner is on vacation, and the bot seems to have gone down.—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); 15:23, 1 August 2008 (UTC)
It worked this morning, so someone must have applied "percussive maintenance" dramatic (talk) 19:17, 1 August 2008 (UTC)

NI & Belfast

Hullo. Could you add the Northern Ireland and Belfast wikiprojects to the bot, when you get the chance? Cheers. --Setanta747 (talk) 16:19, 6 August 2008 (UTC)

NI is done, and I doubt that a separate bot for Belfast is needed. Colchicum (talk) 21:23, 12 August 2008 (UTC)
Thank you. There are quite a few articles about Belfast that are tagged by that project, but not tagged by the NI project though. :) --Setanta747 (talk) 15:48, 14 August 2008 (UTC)

Good stuff

I was quite taken aback at the number of WikiProjects your bot notified about this article! Does it also take into account wikiproject tags already on the talk page (none so far)? 14:00, 12 August 2008 (UTC)

  • All logs will go away in a day or two, thus only a couple of search results would left. No, the bot does not take into account the Project tags. It is primarily intended for patrolling of very new articles that are not tagged 9and often not categorized yet. Alex Bakharev (talk) 15:16, 12 August 2008 (UTC)

Hi, I like this great bot but it has been quite sometime now that a new listing is not being prepared for India related pages. Is the bot shut down or is India de-listed? When will WP:INNEW start getting populated? --gppande «talk» 08:18, 15 October 2008 (UTC)

  • The bot updated the page but there was a problem with translucion of the results to the project page. Fixed Alex Bakharev (talk) 09:55, 15 October 2008 (UTC)
    • Thanks - I love your bot --GPPande talk! 15:34, 16 October 2008 (UTC)

Can we exclude edits by creator?

Look at [1]. User:Kotbot, a very useful bot otherwise, is flooding the new article list with location stubs, and making it periodically useless (his articles are not vandalism and are not DYKable, but they squeeze everything out, making it difficult to see or even not reported at all).--Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| talk 00:44, 20 October 2008 (UTC)

  • The problem is that Kotbot is not the only stub creating bot. Maybe the bot should not report all the stubs created by users with the name ***bot Alex Bakharev (talk) 01:26, 20 October 2008 (UTC)

Any progress? --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| talk 17:30, 27 October 2008 (UTC)

Disallowing spaces in matches?

A rule flagging "Christchurch" in the New Zealand sub-bot is also catching any mention of "Christ church" - hence we are getting a lot of irrelevant Anglican church articles. Is there a tweak that will avoid this? dramatic (talk) 22:59, 9 November 2008 (UTC)

  • The spaces are already disallowed in matches, the problem was that the Christ church seems to have a lot of websites in the www.christchurch* domains. I have made a change that suppose to fix the problem Alex Bakharev (talk) 23:41, 12 November 2008 (UTC)
Thanks - hopefully no more British bishops! dramatic (talk) 00:51, 13 November 2008 (UTC)
Hmm, no results at all for 3 days now? Actually it would be good if the bot wrote a comment to the results page at each run, so we could check when it last updated successfully. dramatic (talk) 22:17, 13 November 2008 (UTC)

Sandboxed articles?

So this bot does an excellent job of finding most new articles, specifically those that are redlinks and are then started, but it seems to omit user sandbox articles that are moved to the mainspace. I understand the bot works from a dataset of new articles, but is it possible to alter it so that it notices articles that have been recently moved from another namespace? the skomorokh 19:58, 12 November 2008 (UTC)

  • Good suggestion! I will think about it Alex Bakharev (talk) 23:30, 12 November 2008 (UTC)
Great, thanks! the skomorokh 00:00, 13 November 2008 (UTC)
I have also noticed that the bot doesn't pick up the articles that have been moved before it runs, which often happens, and, of course, redirects turned into articles. Colchicum (talk) 16:02, 13 November 2008 (UTC)
It certainly does not pick up redirects turned into the articles. It should not pick up former articles that are double redirects due to double moving I thought thee bot should follow a single redirect, but I have to check Alex Bakharev (talk) 07:20, 14 November 2008 (UTC)

Is the bot running for Opera articles?

User:AlexNewArtBot/OperaSearchResult is normally updated every day. It hasn't picked up anything in since November 10th and I've found (by accident) quite a few that have been added since then. Voceditenore (talk) 07:04, 14 November 2008 (UTC)

  • There was a server problem that prevented bot from starting for a couple of days. It is running now and should report results in a few hours. Some article might get into the blind spot of the bot, it only goes 3k articles back in time Alex Bakharev (talk) 07:17, 14 November 2008 (UTC)

Hey, I really appreciate this tool. I added project banners to almost 100 pages to the Idaho project from your Idaho archived pages. Could we run it against "Tennis" articles?... -- IrishDragon 01:57, 28 November 2008 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by IrishDragon (talkcontribs)

Since the relevant WikiProject (WP:FILM) does not include biography articles in its scope, is it possible to ammend the rules of this search to exclude or reduce them? Thanks in advance. PC78 (talk) 20:22, 29 December 2008 (UTC)
