Thanks

Thank you! I should put more stuff in my to-do list, I've been having nice surprises :) Fvasconcellos 21:08, 28 February 2007 (UTC)

  • No problem :) I'm actually watching your userpage for vandals & saw you taking Lubiprostone off your to-do list. I'm nosy so thought I'd investigate :) - Alison 21:18, 28 February 2007 (UTC)
    • I believe being nosy frequently produces good results :) Thanks again for requesting protection for my userpage, BTW—I'm taking the chance to do some new page patrolling while sprot is still up (gotta avoid the backlash ;) Fvasconcellos 21:57, 28 February 2007 (UTC)
      • No problem. It still needs plenty of work though, starting with a structure! Nice new sig, BTW. Fvasconcellos 20:54, 3 March 2007 (UTC)

Flag of Northern Ireland debate

You have been involved in the flag debate on the Northern Ireland talk page. If you remember there were four option listed about the way forward. If you wish you can go here and make your position clear. regards--Vintagekits 22:02, 1 March 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for creating this. Cheers, :) MikeReichold 00:12, 2 March 2007 (UTC)

Steve Stanton

Thanks for your improvements to the Steve Stanton page. Great reorganization! -- Yksin 00:23, 2 March 2007 (UTC)

Update. I'm not sure the nondiscrimination policies currently cited in the Reaction section of the article would prohibit the City discriminating against Stanton. See Talk:Steve Stanton for details of my reasoning. -- Yksin 01:26, 2 March 2007 (UTC)
Yep. Agreed (somewhat). I replied on the talk page. Thanks, BTW :) - Alison<talk> 01:29, 2 March 2007 (UTC)

SM

Tuatha Dé Danann, the first on the list, is not part of S Myth. It wasn't 100 years ago or 200 years ago either. Well, if the edges are going to be blurred, and the waters muddied, what does that make of Wikipedia. At best a second rate encyclopedia. Or we can aim to higher ideals and make a first rate encyclopedia. It's up to the editors. Manopingo 19:14, 3 March 2007 (UTC)

They you (all) need to come to consensus to re-order the list. Deleting the Scottish mythology entry without doing so is just going to cause trouble. And bringing the fight to WP:IWNB without giving any rationale isn't going to help your cause. The Tuatha Dé Danann page explicitly states in its first paragraph that it's an Irish Goidelic myth and not a Scottish one, so there's no confusion in the mind of the reader. - Alison 19:46, 3 March 2007 (UTC)
To be frank, I'm not too concerned, and believe me, I have no cause, but I did try to put it right, so I'm happy with that. How does anyone know the mind of the reader. All I can say is this, I have written some technical stuff in the past, about 9 years ago, and you would be surprised how just one comma in the wrong place could totally confound a reader. Alison 19:58, 3 March 2007 (UTC)
I see you are joining a frenzy against me. That's okay, I forgive you. Remember, I was called a vandal 'first, by your friend editor. Many editors go to the wire with the 3rr, over something the believe is in error. Well if hostility is the new consensus, then it's a sad day for WP. Remember hostility is contagious, but I'll ignore it, these lines from the great bard might give you something to consider, The villainy you teach me I will execute, and it shall go hard but I will better the instruction. Please don't poison Wikipedia. Manopingo 12:12, 5 March 2007 (UTC)
Dude, there is no "frenzy" against you. You're completely overrreacting here. However, I do note that you've decided to take {{celtic mythology}} to WP:WWNB now. These are not the actions of someone who is "not too concerned" and "[has] no cause". You just called up an editor for a personal attack over using the word "pedantic" in a revert of one of your edits to Ireland. May I suggest you step back for a minute and consider your position on all this? I am not "poison[ing] wikipedia", nor am I "teach[ing] villainy", as you imply. - Alison 13:01, 5 March 2007 (UTC)
  • Comment, I am trying to vindicate my good faith edits, that's all. Have cause now.Manopingo 13:31, 5 March 2007 (UTC)
  • Comment--your friend accused me of being a vandal. I did not break 3rr. My edits were good faith edits. I am deeply offended, and I require an apology. Manopingo 13:17, 5 March 2007 (UTC)
  • Kathryn is not my "friend" - she is just another editor, is all. Try discussing the content of edits rather than the person. If you require an apology, I'm sure it will be forthcoming on WP:AN/I where you've brought your edit war. In the meantime, maybe try editing some content, as the the vast majority of your edits so far have been userpage commentary - Alison 13:21, 5 March 2007 (UTC)
Well, you you have turned yourself inside out defending the indefensible, as per my last. I have always turned a blind eye to sark, but never more. Manopingo 13:26, 5 March 2007 (UTC)

At least people will know I made my stand. When folks examine WP files in 200 years time, they'll see that one man stood up for the true history. He's going to get barred, but that's the price of being true! Good night Ali, good night. Manopingo 23:41, 5 March 2007 (UTC)

Sir, you need to step back for a minute and take a breather. Your edit commentary is getting more and more offensive. Honestly - just take it easy and edit some other stuff for a while and cool down before you get blocked - Alison 23:52, 5 March 2007 (UTC)

Nice to see you watching, Irish one. Manopingo 23:48, 5 March 2007 (UTC)

You need watching. You're getting abusive with just about everyone who comes in contact with you, not to mention you doing your best to alienate the entire listenership of WP:IWNB [1] - Alison 23:52, 5 March 2007 (UTC)

Some people won't talk. The edits i am concerned about were done without talk. Ali, I know you are a fine editor. Yep, you may not have noticed, in all the broil, it's coming around. The reverts weren't reverts, but corrections. I'll have a look later. Manopingo 23:58, 5 March 2007 (UTC)

Reflist?

Hi there, I noticed your replacement of the Enzyme inhibitor ref section with the reflist template. What is the advantage of this reformatting? I can't seem to find any new features. If this is advantageous, I'll reformat some of my other articles. TimVickers 18:09, 4 March 2007 (UTC)

  • Hi Tim. I tend to use {{Reflist}} for a number of reasons; 1) it's easy to understand - you can set optional arguments for coulums and default widths, etc, 2) new editors are often confused by the <references /> tag as it's not immediately obvious to them that the references get cited right there 3) it saves the repetitive markup stuff that you need to add to format columns, etc. I like it because it's tidy and clean and easy to understand! - Alison 01:58, 5 March 2007 (UTC)

Thank you for trying to act as a mediator. However, there really isn't an issue here. This user is a sock of the permabanned User:Bluegold and is - believe me - beyond being brought into the fold of reasonable conversation. I've brought it up on Theresa_knott, the blocking admin and can only wait until she responds. Regards, Calgacus (ΚΑΛΓΑΚΟΣ) 00:25, 6 March 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for the cluebat :) I had thought I recognised the style all right. I've done my best to try to address the situation but reckon it's a lost cause because whoever it is is cruising for a block/ban anyway. Has anyone tried WP:RCU? - Alison 00:30, 6 March 2007 (UTC)
Not sure that would do any good; Angusmclellan tells me they only keep records for 6 weeks or something. It's nevertheless certain that it is he. Calgacus (ΚΑΛΓΑΚΟΣ) 00:50, 6 March 2007 (UTC)

Warning

Barnstar alert.

The Original Barnstar
Reading through Ali-oops' Talk archives, I've come to the conclusion that she is one of the finest contributers to Wikipedia. She contributes superlatively to many Irish-related articles, keeps a level head throughout altercations (of which there have been many), and is generally a quality contributor and User. She also contributes to the Irish language Wikipedia, Meta, Wiktionary, and Commons, and regularly fights vandalism, sock-puppetry, and policy-ignorant users. Her unique knowledge of Irish culture brings a fresh perspective to that section of the Encyclopedia, and conversly she is able to translate that information to and from the Irish 'Pedia. Her qualities surmise a strong character and resilient editor, and she always greets a stubborn user or fellow editor with a smile (or the equivalent Unicode character). The best thing, however, is that she works at APPLE. I post this Barnstar to Ali-oops' page to recognize one of the few great editors on Wikipedia, and simultaneously I hope others can follow her example. z ε n .ıl 03:06, 6 March 2007 (UTC)

I read through your entire Talk archives, and seriously - you are a super editor. Cheers! z ε n .ıl 03:06, 6 March 2007 (UTC)

  • OMG!! Well ..... I'm a little shocked, to be honest! Thank you so much for the barnstar. :) I have to say, though, that I don't do nearly enough work on the other wikis. But OMG ... <blush> - thank you! - Alison 17:57, 6 March 2007 (UTC)
  • You deserve it. Thank you for the return star as well! z ε n .ıl 00:25, 7 March 2007 (UTC)

Nice; you beat me to fixing the references on that article. I barely had chance to do one when I had to do something else. I come back, and find the references done! I suppose next time I should be quicker. :) Acalamari 19:16, 6 March 2007 (UTC)

  • Heh! I'm always watching that page for edits (as well as Allie and Allison). You could say I've a personal interest in it! Are you an Allie too, by any chance? I've seen you around on some of the admin pages so it's nice to finally meet up :) - Alison 19:36, 6 March 2007 (UTC)
  • Sorry, I'm not an Allie! However, you're right to guess that my real name, along with my username, begins with an "A." (Well, that shortens the guessing game down quite a lot.) Quick question: besides RFC/U, which other admin pages have you seen me on? I was unaware I'd been on so many. Acalamari 19:52, 6 March 2007 (UTC)
  • Mostly RFC/U, but also WP:AIV every so often and also on Ryan's RFA - Alison 20:00, 6 March 2007 (UTC)
  • Yeah, I'm trying to do more in the administrative area; I should do more for the userbox on my userpage that says about me and adminship. Acalamari 20:12, 6 March 2007 (UTC)
  • I noticed that your user page, like mine is semi-protected (in fact, the administrator who last semi-protected your userpage is the same administrator who semi-protected mine). I was wondering if you'd be interested in having this userbox on your userpage. I'm not promoting userboxes, I just thought it might be one you'd like to have due to the semi-protection of your page. Acalamari 00:23, 7 March 2007 (UTC)
  • That's kinda neat - I'll take it! Mind if I modify it to take an argument which will flip it from past to present tense? - Alison 00:32, 7 March 2007 (UTC)
  • Sure, go ahead; if you can improve the userbox, that's great. :) Acalamari 01:09, 7 March 2007 (UTC)
  • Done! Take a look ... - Alison 02:01, 7 March 2007 (UTC)
  • I responded on my talk page with: It looks great, thanks. I have credited your work on it here on my userbox page. Acalamari 02:41, 7 March 2007 (UTC)
  • Thanks, but no need to credit at all! It was your cool idea in the first place so it should be yours :) Glad you like it - Alison 17:47, 7 March 2007 (UTC)

Kindness.

The Random Acts of Kindness Barnstar
You deserve this barnstar for your work on my userbox. You did more than improve the wording: you improved the color and overall look. Acalamari 17:49, 7 March 2007 (UTC)
  • Oh - thank you! :) Wow ... - Alison 18:43, 7 March 2007 (UTC)
  • You did more than I thought you would do, so that counts as a random act of kindness. :) Acalamari 18:56, 7 March 2007 (UTC)

Status Changer

Sure you may! If you want to have the scheme work with your current status changer then edit the User:Persian Poet Gal/Status portion with your own. If you do not have a status changer page, replace that portion with text of whether you are online or offline. If you want to create a status changer page manually do so by placing the online or offline text on a page called User:Ali-oops/Status or you can follow the directions here to implement an automatic status changer. Feel free to ask me any questions if you are having trouble!¤~Persian Poet Gal (talk) 20:11, 7 March 2007 (UTC)

The Vandal.

So, it seems that User Talk: NaeNae18 vandalized your talk page? Well, you probably saw on his talk page that he vandalized my userpage. I told him not to vandalize, which is why he decided to vadalize my userpage. I suspect he then looked at my contributions, saw you in there, and vandalized your talk page. Acalamari 20:28, 7 March 2007 (UTC)

My mistake: the reason he vandalized you was more likely because he saw you revert his edit to Ciara. Acalamari 20:30, 7 March 2007 (UTC)
Yah. It goes with the territory, I think :). 41 userpage vandals and counting ... - Alison 23:00, 7 March 2007 (UTC)
That vandal should feel lucky (he probably doesn't): he vandalized the pages of two users with semi-protected users pages, and he was blocked by the kindest user on Wikipedia. Acalamari 23:03, 7 March 2007 (UTC)
LOL!! True ... :) - Alison 23:05, 7 March 2007 (UTC)

Conolly's Folly's Folly

Can you please revert your move at Conolly's Folly. The family who built the monument were the Conollys: for evidence see the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland, Lewis's Topographical Directory of Ireland, 1837, Oxford Biography Index, etc. More references can be provided. --Damac 23:09, 7 March 2007 (UTC)

  • Yep - will do. Thanks for that and sorry for the confusion. I'll put a note in the article to that effect - Alison 23:11, 7 March 2007 (UTC)
  • Ok - it's all fixed back now and the references added. Sorry about the mess! - Alison 23:38, 7 March 2007 (UTC)

Yeah, it was up on the main page for about four hours. And it was vandalized during that time, which means somebody read it. =P Some anonymous IPs came in and fixed typos too. coelacan — 23:28, 8 March 2007 (UTC)

Too kind by far

Hello Alison! Thanks for the kind words and the shiny bauble. When you're completely and obviously wrong, like I was, apologising is a lot easier than sulking, or pretending you never were wrong. And congrats on the Did You Know thing. Thanks again and all the best, Angus McLellan (Talk) 23:29, 8 March 2007 (UTC)

Deletions of links

It seems that we are being chastised for putting up our link and being accused of deleting others. Just the opposite seems to be happening. Our link which leads others to an information site as well as the suggested 'Standard of Care' sent to WPATH for consideration as well as a contact site for those confused is continually being deleted. It is stated that ours is a duplicate site. It is not any more that than the myriad of sites dealing with transsexualism and transgenderism. If only one site dealing with a subject then I might suggest no need for those duplications either. Our site HTTP://www.harrybenjaminsyndrome-info.org/ is a separate site that is run by six women who have had corrective surgery. We are part of a larger group of women born with HBS and who feel unaligned with those that consider themselves as transsexual or transgender. We did not trans anything; we affirmed our physical sex to our brain gender. I can be reached directly at DianePa@yahoo.com and my real name is Diane. I had my surgery 35 yrs ago in Bklyn, NY by Dr R. Granata and my primary doctors were Harry Benjamin and Charles Ihlenfeld. — Preceding unsigned comment added by DianePa (talkcontribs)

  • You are undoubtedly the same Diane so who posted this inflammatory and entirely factually incorrect commentary to the Steve Stanton interview earlier today. So yes, you did delete other links. Here's the evidence. Here's where you deleted the {{Reflist}} template from the transsexualism article, which you have done repeatedly; at least three times now. Here's where you deleted a category (transgender) from the Transwoman article, for some reason. Here's where you attempted to embed your own website into article content even though it's already covered in the references. Here's where you inserted your POV into the article wholesale (with the obligatory link again) and again here. Note that a number of other editors - not just me - have reverted your edits. Your contributions are nothing but the same links to your own website. Please read WP:COI and WP:EL for the reasons why this is unacceptable. Please also see WP:OR to understand why original research is disallowed within Wikipedia. Note that HBS is an entirely non-proven syndrome and has scant acceptance among the medical and psych commmunity (including WPATH, yes). There is no proof that HBS is an intersex condition; there is just a bunch of suspicions and indeed, as I pointed out earlier today (which you did not address), recent evidence[1] suggests that it may not be an intersex condition.

Personal attacks

Please stay away from my user-page. I consider your interference as a personal attack. I notice that you class such edits on your own user page, by other editors, as vandalism. Please refrain, enough! Thank you.Manopingo 00:52, 12 March 2007 (UTC)

Personal attacks? Ali-oops reverted her edits. to your user page. Acalamari 01:39, 12 March 2007 (UTC)
Tell ya what, Manopingo. I reverted what I thought was vandalism of your userpage. I de-reverted it immediately after I realised the situation and apologised [2]. Recently, I tried to intervene on your behalf in an editorial dispute [3] and petitioned three other editors to give you a fair chance [4] . At this point, I now give up. I will no longer be intervening on your behalf. Seeya - Alison 03:21, 12 March 2007 (UTC) (thanks, Acalamari!)
Just don't touch any of my pages ever again. At least I know when I have erred. If you and your mates are intent on calling new users vandals, and the 3rr rule is not even broken, then WP becomes a hostile place. I am still waiting for an apology from one of your cohorts. I guess it will never appear. FIN. Manopingo 14:40, 12 March 2007 (UTC)
"Just don't touch any of my pages ever again" - consider it so. Mind you, you've had so many personae on here, it's going to be difficult to maintain. If you think WP is a "hostile place", try maybe toning down your invective. A quick look at your edit history tells it all. BTW, I have no 'cohorts' here - we're all just editors after all. Ok - we're done. Buh-bye! - Alison 14:45, 12 March 2007 (UTC)

Slight bone to pick

In your haste to improve the hydroxyzine article, the UCB south africa drug pamphlet was removed from the references section, but left inside the ref tags. Also, i can vouch to say that it is much more in-depth than the online version replacing it, which is more-or-less the same as the Rx article, and lists far fewer of the contraindications and side effects that were found and prescribed for those in third-world countries.

The main reason it was included was a concensus between James and I, that it would contain more adverse effects and would act as a "worst case scenario" for those in western countries, due to the range experienced in Africa.

Still, thanks for your contributions! :-) J O R D A N [talk ] 14:32, 13 March 2007 (UTC)

Unfree images in userspace

Hi. Would you please remove all of the unfree images you are claiming Wikipedia:Fair use on from your userspace? Also, some of them need a proper Wikipedia:Fair use rationale. Thanks. Jkelly 04:43, 14 March 2007 (UTC)

Ok - fixed that. I switched the Fair use references to indirect links. Thanks for the heads-up - Alison 05:16, 14 March 2007 (UTC)

I know you watch my pages but I responded with You're welcome; thanks for the flower! However, I would like to add this: I felt I had to ask Ryan to be the co-nominator; as he's known you longer than I have. Also, did you know your RfA has been vandalized already? • And thanks too for your comments on St Patrick's Day. More and more of us are getting fed up with the "shamrockery" and alcohol-fuelled excesses. Our leaders are flying to all corners of the globe, leaving the Garda to try to contain things. But enjoy the day. I'll be going to church, CofI as it happens, to give thanks for the work of a Brit who introduced Christianity to Ireland. Then I'll have an undyed Guinness with lunch, and wander down into town to see the Parade. Let's hope we have better weather than last year.

Block log

Yeah, there seems to be a bug somewhere. Blocks aren't being recorded correctly. If I try to reblock that user the system tells me they are already blocked, so I believe the block is correctly in the database but is not being shown in the UI. I'm currently tracing another user account that seems to be suffering from the same problem. Gwernol 00:46, 15 March 2007 (UTC)

Minor

Well, this is just my opinion of course, but your contribs show a far greater percentage of minor edits than is typical. That implies that either you're not doing much :) or you have a different idea of what "minor" means than most people. That's not particularly problematic (there's no firm rule about it anyway) but it may confuse people. For instance, I would not consider a !vote on AFD of RFC/username to be "minor" because such an edit is "typical" for such a page. >Radiant< 11:39, 16 March 2007 (UTC)

So I thought about it. The USF vandal made many hundreds of disruptive edits across many pages, including user pages. Some people just like to destroy the work of others. When they get reverted, they resort to puerile insults and childish behaviour, just like in real-life. I reverted their vandalism on Steve Sailer and a few other articles and earned their eternal wrath. C'est la vie - Alison 19:39, 16 March 2007 (UTC)

I know you are a very nice person and all alison, but you are getting in the later years in your life and you should really reconsider your decisions on what to do with the rest of it... you probably don't have many years left and wasting them on Wikipedia is a very bad idea. Thanks for reverting vandalism on my userpage. I'm having a real problem with KazakhPol repeatedly changing my page... Djma12 (talk) 00:20, 22 March 2007 (UTC)

  • No problem. He should leave your userpage alone, as I don't see anything that violates WP:NPA there. If he does it again, add a warning to his talk page before you report it to WP:AIV. Thanks! - Alison 00:23, 22 March 2007 (UTC)
Excuse me? Did you even look at my edits? I am fully within my rights to remove personal attack 'barnstars' from other users userpages per WP:NPA. You dont like it, too bad. I suggest you look at WP:OWN and WP:VANDALISM. Another administrator already warned the user in question. Dont bother me again. KazakhPol 00:23, 22 March 2007 (UTC)
Please leave the other user's talk page alone for the moment. If you have an issue with it, maybe report it to WP:AN/I before you take the matter into your own hands. - Alison 00:26, 22 March 2007 (UTC)
In all fairness, he did, though he didn't get a lot of response. It was pretty clearly a personal attack on KazakhPol, but Djma12 has removed it, which I appreciate. —bbatsell ¿? 00:33, 22 March 2007 (UTC)
Thanks for that! I'm kinda new at the job here (3 hours and counting) and was unaware of the history here. Glad it has been resolved now, though - Alison 00:55, 22 March 2007 (UTC) (still learning here)
  • Do you mind helping me here? He's at it again. Djma12 (talk) 00:25, 22 March 2007 (UTC)

Hmm, thats interesting. We clearly differ in our interpretation of incivility. I would consider it incivil to post a vandalism warning to another user's talkpage when you know the other user is editing in good faith, a violation of WP:AGF, to be incivil. Per WP:NPA I can remove personal attacks in their entirety, no discussion needed, and WP:3RR does not apply. My editing of his userpage can in no way be considered vandalism. I already complained about this on WP:AN/I. The user in question was warned by Llama Man for making personal attacks. KazakhPol 00:36, 22 March 2007 (UTC)

Well its sorted then, Djma12 has said he's not going to readd the barnstar, so hopefully that should be the end of it Ryanpostlethwaite contribs/talk 00:38, 22 March 2007 (UTC)

For the record, I didn't write that barnstar. All I know is that some user keeps on changing my userpage without even so much as discussing it on my talk page. Djma12 (talk) 00:44, 22 March 2007 (UTC)

I can see that the user in question refused to discuss it with you. However, you should not just report him to WP:AIV without having given him due warning beforehand. Thanks, though, for removing the barnstar from your page - Alison 00:55, 22 March 2007 (UTC)

Vandals

Hi Alison. First, thanks for reverting the clever comments left on my user page. :) I was going to add this info to AIV, but the user was blocked in the meantime: User:Mgenty2k5 was vandalising McEachern High School at the same time as User:68.19.3.11 in much the same style. To me it looks like the same person. Happy editing. Robotman1974 01:33, 22 March 2007 (UTC)

Pannectomy and To-Do lists.

Hi Alison,

I noticed pannectomy listed on your "To-Do" list. It's been awhile since my 3rd year surgical rotation, but I seem to remember that a pannectomy is a modified abdominoplasty, for which there is a wiki page available. (Please correct me if I am wrong.) I can go ahead and create a redirect if you feel it is appropriate.

Can you come take a look at this article and lend a hand? User:Hfarmer keeps adding a lot of unsourced and poorly sourced information about this woman's birthdate, old name, aliases, and a recent alleged hospitalization that has not been reported in the press. Possible Disruption.

I would like to archive my talk page, but I'm not so sure I should. You see, in Sarah's opposition, she posted links to messages on my talk page to show others' why she opposes. If I archive those messages, I'm concerned that the links won't link to those messages anymore. Should I wait until after the RfA until archiving; or if I do archive, will it be worth asking Sarah to re-link them? My talk page is getting huge. Acalamari 18:47, 22 March 2007 (UTC)

  • I'd say leave your talk page completely alone until after your RFA. Sarah's links aren't diffs, but anchors, so they'll get lost in the move. Best off wait so you cannot be accused of any shennanigans. And hey, good luck! - Alison 18:52, 22 March 2007 (UTC)
    • I agree; I should leave it. I don't want users' to start accusing me of disrupting Sarah's oppose by archiving my talk page. I've got enough problems as it is without adding more. Acalamari 18:56, 22 March 2007 (UTC)
      • Yup. If you've got an auto-archiver, maybe switch it off for the mo' - Alison 19:00, 22 March 2007 (UTC)

Is blanking a user talk page, including warnings, really prohibited? Any interested editors can always view the history and the block log. WP:USER only says that "removing warnings from one's own talk page is often frowned upon." –Pomte 04:50, 23 March 2007 (UTC)

FSU

Alison, in view of the extraordinarily high level of vandalism originating from the Florida State University site, whom you have just blocked for one week - which includes several attacks on your user page, an absolute torrent aimed at User:Gwernol, and significant numbers of equally mindless edits on other pages - is it not finally time that they received a long block, and that communication was made with the powers-that-be at the College to attempt to stop it at source? As we all know, WP:POLICY allows for this in the case of serious and ongoing disruption comimg from an unknown or shared IP.--Anthony.bradbury 15:21, 23 March 2007 (UTC)

  • I see you're in the middle of .. errm .. "something important" right now. But yes, he's just struck again so I think it's time to consider a range block. I'll bring it up on WP:ANI. Thanks! - Alison 23:49, 23 March 2007 (UTC)
I've range blocked at least 512 FSU IPs for 1 month. This should help. I am skeptical about contacting the university, but if anyon wants to try they are welcome. Gwernol 23:53, 23 March 2007 (UTC)
Thanks! (I missed this comment earlier - sorry) - Alison 00:22, 24 March 2007 (UTC)

Ok. Yes, I am busy right now, and thank you for your support. Whether contacting the University would produce any result I have absolutely no idea; the only comment that I would make is that attempting to contact the University must stand more chance of a positive result than not doing so would.--Anthony.bradbury 00:30, 24 March 2007 (UTC)

OK. If we are sceptical about the prospects of success in contacting the University, then so be it. It would work in my country (UK), but I have essentially no expertise in the way that Colleges are run on the USA side of the pond. But if we, as a project, do not in this type of situation see a value in contacting the senior hierarchy in teaching establishments, then why, on our standard message applied to anonymous persistent vandalism sites, do we theaten to do so?--Anthony.bradbury 13:34, 24 March 2007 (UTC)

Hippy420 is an obvious drug reference and getnaked is an obvious sexual reference, so my train of thought went towards containing sexual and drug innuendo. However, if you still disagree I guess you can go ahead with WP:RCFN. --Wafulz 18:37, 23 March 2007 (UTC)

Hi Alison. As noted above, I've already range blocked 512 of the FSU IP addresses today for 1 month. This covers the set that the FSU vandal usually uses (presumably a frat house or computer lab range). Hopefully this will stop this minor irritant for now. Best, Gwernol 00:17, 24 March 2007 (UTC)

Male/female admin reactions

Interesting point raised by Riana and yourself. I think an experiment should be conducted to see how much more abuse female administrators/vandal fighters get compared to their male counterparts. I think a male admin should volunteer to be renamed Susan for a month and report back on how different an experience they have :-). WjBscribe 01:25, 24 March 2007 (UTC)

Excellent idea! Who do you propose we 'volunteer' for the experiment? I volunteer Ryan for the job! :) In seriousness, I'd say there's quite a difference. Prior to my admin days, some editors got shockingly patronising about certain edits. Such is life ... - Alison 01:30, 24 March 2007 (UTC)
I've always like the name susan, I'm game! :-) Ryanpostlethwaite contribs/talk 01:33, 24 March 2007 (UTC)
Tsk, tsk, Ryan :) - Alison 11:43, 24 March 2007 (UTC)
Well, even without the Admin target painted on my back credentials, I'm shocked at some of the patronizing crap I've gotten. I vacillate between wanting to change to a gender-neutral screename or stay obviously, defiantly female so it hurts worse when I kick their asses :-) - Kathryn NicDhàna 01:46, 24 March 2007 (UTC)
True indeed :) - Alison 11:43, 24 March 2007 (UTC)
  • I believe Riana was saying it in jest. It doesn't matter what gender you are. No one cares. Vandals will see you as a threat no matter what. This is an issue over nothing. As I'm being told on my RfA at the moment: ignore it. Acalamari 01:49, 24 March 2007 (UTC)
After tomorrow, I will become User:Susan for a month, assuming my change of username is acceptable, I think it will be a very interesting study Ryanpostlethwaite contribs/talk 01:51, 24 March 2007 (UTC)
You get a lot of vandalism anyway. I say you will get less. I note how my RfA has suddenly become a discussion board for discussing this subject. Interesting. Acalamari 01:55, 24 March 2007 (UTC)
Yeah, my apologies for that, we should try to keep it somewhere else ;) – Riana 01:58, 24 March 2007 (UTC)
Plus, as I said: ignore it. Users have told me to ignore silly issues. WP:POINT. Acalamari 02:00, 24 March 2007 (UTC)
  • I firmly believe that they actually do care. Trust me - the world in general and WP specifically is so NOT a level playing field when it comes to gender. I can think of dozens of examples. You'd be surprised. - Alison 11:43, 24 March 2007 (UTC)
  • Sorry to butt in and bump an old topic, but I strongly agree with you, Alison. Some of the discussions on the Wikichix mailing list and the comments on the site also support your observations. It was interesting reading about the experiences of people with gender ambiguous usernames and those whose usernames imply they are male and how their treatment and experiences changed when they revealed they were actually female. I think most people who think that we are all equal and that no one here cares about gender are male or are generally thought to be male. Of course, the good people don't care and treat each other as equal, regardless of gender, age, education etc, but there is definitely a undercurrent of gender bias and sexism and if there wasn't, the idea of Wikichix would never have even been conceived, let alone come into existence with 122 women becoming members. Sarah 04:37, 30 March 2007 (UTC)

As a procedural note, user:Susan is taken but is a candidate for usurpation. So Ryan would have to wait at least a week before assuming the name. In fact, if logged today the request would be performed on April 1st! Oh, and I'd get a promise from the crats that they'll be willing to change your name back again afterwards ;-). WjBscribe 02:14, 24 March 2007 (UTC)

Ha, ultimate april fools! But on a serious note, I really think it would be interesting to look at - do you think the crats would accept it? Might even be better to change my name on April 1st to a completely new name; User:Susan Thorpe??? Ryanpostlethwaite contribs/talk 02:22, 24 March 2007 (UTC)
I think it would be a fascinating study and an excellent essay candidate. It'd certainly be an eye-opener for you :) - Alison 11:43, 24 March 2007 (UTC)

I read a lot on IPL hair removal sofar. Can anybody, however, tell me what is meant by Pulse sequence, pulse intermission and pulse width. What do these parameters mean? Best regards, Sigrid — Preceding unsigned comment added by 84.177.20.121 (talkcontribs)

Hi Sigrid. You musy have read my contributions to the above article. It's been a day for talking about my work history so I'd better admit that I also worked on medical and industrial lasers, which is somewhat related to IPL. Both IPL and laser depilation works by momentarily applying one or more bursts of high energy to hairs which are to be removed. This energy is absorbed by the dark hairs and not the surrounding tissue (in theory) and it is transported into the dermal layer where it hopefully damages or destroys the germ cells in the hair root. This pulse of energy (light or whatever) is controlled by the three parameters below;
  • Pulse width - the duration of the energy or light pulse which is applied to the target area. This is usually measured in milliseconds. The quantity of energy the target area absorbs is related to the energy pulse in joules times the pulse width in mS.
  • Pulse intermission - in the case of where more than one pulse is fired at the target area per 'hit' (some IPL machines can zap an area a number of times within one second of application) the time between these pulses is the intermission. It's also measured in milliseconds.
  • Pulse sequence - this relates to the number of pulses of energy applied per firing of the lamp/laser. Sometimes, it's one pulse but it can go on up to 6 or 7 rapid firings per application.
This stuff should really end up in the IPL and Laser hair removal article, but this should give you a rough idea of the three parameters. Hope this is of some help. Let me know if you need any further info. (Jokestress - if you're reading this, feel free to correct me. You're the expert!) - Alison 03:24, 25 March 2007 (UTC)

Transsexual

Hi there;I see that you have this article on your list for cleanup. Having just ploughed through the article, may I wish you the very best of luck! In my professional view it needs a total rewrite, and achieving this without offending any pressure groups will be a real triumph, if you can achieve it. In my opinion sexual dysmorphism is only a subset of somatic dysmorphism, and should be treated, sympathetically, but in the same way (i.e. you don't cutthe leg off). This is, of course, a minority view, which I do not flaunt. If I can help with this, or any other medical article, let me know. Am I right in assuming that you have a medical qualification?--Anthony.bradbury 01:50, 25 March 2007 (UTC)

Hi Anthony. Yes, it's on my to-do list as it's a complete mess on a number of levels. As I said in my RfA, I spent a couple of gruelling hours digging out all the refs and cites and putting them into some order. Messy :) The article is on my permanent watchlist, along with related ones as they're vandal-magnets.
As with many WP articles, it's a POV battle and right now it's loosely based around a mix of the WPATH and Free Univ. Hospital of Amsterdam Standards of Care for treating transsexual people. Some of the sources quoted are unreliable to say the least & a lot more primary sources need quoting i.e, psychiatric, endocrinological, psychological. Alternatives such as reparative therapy are given scant mention. Nowhere does the etiology of somatic dysmorphism get a mention although I'm aware that some, including yourself, hold those views (comparisons have been made to apotemnophilia). It's unpopular in the extreme amongst transsexual people but if you can provide good refs, I'd be delighted to see it added. The article as it stands is somewhat unbalanced so do feel free to dig in and have a go at putting it to rights. That article needs diverse inputs. Oh, and you might also want to check out Gender Identity Disorder while you're at it :)
Re. my background; I've formal qualifications in electronic engineering and software engineering. I work for a rather well-known 'fruit' company and have no formal medical qualification. Having said that, I worked for Cooper Technicon in the past (now Bayer Diagnostics) where I was involved in medical diagnostic R&D. I picked up far too much knowledge of haematological and endocrine matters than is healthy for an amateur. It was part of the deal back then and it kicked off a lifelong interest in such matters. I don't normally mention that stuff over on WP but there ya go! - Alison 03:02, 25 March 2007 (UTC)

Paradox

So someone vandalised Persian Poet Gal's userpage by incrementing her vandal count... Doesn't your reverting that mean her count is now incorrect?!? Ahh, my head hurts... :-) WjBscribe 04:09, 25 March 2007 (UTC)

Oh no!!! I'd not thought of that. So only if the count was incorrect in the first place would it be considered not vandalism. If it was correct, then it was vandalism and thus the counter needs to be incremented. Which they did. D'oh - now my head hurts!! :) - Alison 04:14, 25 March 2007 (UTC)

Can you please indefinitely block Geminemini (talk · contribs)? All the user did was vandalize multiple pages. I think we're still on the main page. Best not to protect at all. coelacan — 08:19, 25 March 2007 (UTC)

  • It's been fully protected by a bot two days ago but it just expired. It's being beaten to death by anon vandals - I'd been considering full prot! Comments? - Alison 08:22, 25 March 2007 (UTC)
  • Main page articles are supposed to be fully unprotected for the duration of the main page display, because that's the first thing people can edit when they get to "the free encyclopedia anyone can edit". It's some people's first time here, every day. This is very commonly accepted consensus as I understand it. The bot's protection earlier was probably to prepare for main page... which is why it expired now. coelacan — 08:24, 25 March 2007 (UTC)
  • Point taken. I was unaware of accepted consensus (insert newb admin excuse here) I've unprotected it so expect the onslaught! :) Thanks for the advice - Alison 08:27, 25 March 2007 (UTC)
  • No problem. Since it is on the main page, most reverts happen pretty quickly too. Keeping the backlog on WP:AIV down, and warning/blocking is usually the best thing you can do for the featured article. =) coelacan — 08:30, 25 March 2007 (UTC)

I should clarify that when I said "main page articles are supposed to be fully unprotected" that only applies to today's featured article, AFAIK. If any other article on the main page shows up at WP:RFPP, there's no reason not to protect, again, AFAIK. If it comes up and you're not sure, WP:AN, of course. coelacan — 08:41, 25 March 2007 (UTC)

Ah! Thanks for clarifying that. I note that vandalism has taken off again too. 2am here and I'm still watching WP:AIV :) Thanks again - Alison 08:55, 25 March 2007 (UTC)

  • I'm a bit concerned about indefblocking an IP address for fear of collateral damage and blocking policy recommends against it. As they seem dead set on just one or two articles, I could simply extend their block and they'll probably give up - Alison 08:40, 25 March 2007 (UTC)

Hi there, you said that the article was protected beacuse of an user, Verdict. I saw that account and it has been blocked by some sort of community thing so it wont be back. • Editors that are blocked (indef or otherwise) still have write access to their talk pages. That's how they can communicate to request unblocking, etc. However, this can be abused by the editor and when that happens, the page can be protected from editing. Not something I'd like to do as they're left with no recourse, but it does happen ... - Alison 00:39, 27 March 2007 (UTC)
  • Thanks, Alison, I wasn't aware of that (altough it undoubtly makes sense ... :-) ). I had a bookmark for the user contributions page for Antholog1793 and was surprised to see his revert there. comments left at my talk page for Finkelstein anon editor

I assume the comments you left on my talk page were actually intended for anon editor 4.239.138.147. You might want to leave comments on that user's talk page. I already explained the situation to him at his talk page, but you may have something to add. You also might want to redact the WP:AIV posting, as it appears this user has legitimate concerns ( WP:AGF ) about the article in question, and is merely handling it wrong. This is probably not real vandalism, but an editor who doesn't know the system. WP:BITE may apply here. --Jayron32|talk|contribs 05:10, 26 March 2007 (UTC)

  • Thanks for the followup. I totally agree here and have already removed your entry from WP:AIV. Your message on me making disparaging comments

Dear Alison, please explain what my comments are "disparaging", becuase it is serious accusation of me. Biophys was given a number of warnings for his uncivil behavior [7]. He publishes rumors and hoaxes, please see some points here Wikipedia:Requests for comment/Biophys. Moreover, Biophys himself does edit warring over me. You could actually help us both - please see the mediation Cabal case on Boris Stomakhin. Respectfully. Vlad fedorov 06:44, 27 March 2007 (UTC)

  • Vlad - your edit history speaks for itself. Your labelling other editors "liars", regardless of your differences, is just not on. - Alison 23:23, 27 March 2007 (UTC)

Please also, see there how Biophys covers his deletions of texts diff. He deleted from the article well-sourced information that Albats father himself was from KGB bodies, because it weakens her reliability. But it is a fact. And no valid explanations were presented by Biophys.Vlad fedorov 07:44, 27 March 2007 (UTC)

This example (diff) was related to violation of WP:BLP by Vlad. He inserted poorly sourced defamatory statements about a living person he disliked (women journalist and researcher, Harvard graduate). I posted my comments here: Talk:Yevgenia_Albats#Violation_of_BLP_rules and here Wikipedia:Biographies_of_living_persons/Noticeboard#Yevgenia_AlbatsBiophys 20:12, 27 March 2007 (UTC)

Since you are probably not familiar with Russian politics, I have to explain that Vlad inserted also unreliable negative information about another female journalist who was in opposition to Putin's government: Anna Politkovskaya who was recently killed. See my comments here: Talk:Anna_Politkovskaya#Arutunyan_claims_and_POV. I am telling this because negative information about both women, Anna Politkovskaya and Yevgenia Albats came from the same unreliable source. Actually Yevgenia Albats tried to protect her murdered colleague, Anna Politkovskaya from defamation after her death. Vlad disseminates all this defamatory disinformation in Wikipedia, in my opinion. Biophys 23:12, 27 March 2007 (UTC)

Alison, I did discussed everything with Vlad on numerous occasions. But he follows all my edits on Russian political topics (during last several months!) and reverts my well-sourced texts. He made my life in Wikipedia miserable. User:Colchicum filed an RFC about his behavior. That did not help. Please see: Wikipedia:Requests_for_comment/Vlad_fedorov and Wikipedia_talk:Requests_for_comment/Vlad_fedorov#New_episodes_of_wikistalking_by_Vlad. You can simply trace my edits and Vlad's edits to see. Sorry for bothering you with this. Biophys 14:57, 27 March 2007 (UTC)

My last negotiation attempts can be found here: Talk:Nikolai_Koltsov (see (Nature(journal)), Talk:Persecution_of_political_bloggers#Vlad.27s_claims, Talk:Active_measures#We_must_find_a_compromise. I believe that Vlad's actions after these explanations and attempted negotiations constitute clear vandalism. Biophys 15:05, 27 March 2007 (UTC)

RfC

  • RIght now, I see that both of you are using the WP:RFC process to bring this matter to the attention of neutral parties. This is probably the best approach right now. I recommend both of you cool off and try to avoid situations where you interact with each other and just let the RfCs run their course. From both your edit histories, I can see that neither of you is particularly innocent in all this. I also agree that both of you should try to follow whatever the MEDCAB ruling was. - Alison 23:23, 27 March 2007 (UTC)
    • Ok - Vlad - I've just rolled back your comments here. This is not going to get into a flamewar here on my talk page. Please go through the RfC and/or arbitration process and cool off going for each other all the time. I'm not interested whether or not Biophys speaks Russian or not or whether it makes him a liar or not. Point is, you both need to cool off, back down and quit slinging insults at each other, least of all over here. Ok? - Alison 03:57, 28 March 2007 (UTC)
      • Alison, I appreciate your advice. It seems that an increasing number of Russian editors do not like my articles. Last of them has been deleted (it was about FSB teams that operate in the Internet). The deletion is currently under review: [8]. I have tried to improve and recreate this article under a different name (see User:Biophys/tutorial), but the subject should be probably more general. Do you think I am on the wrong track? Vandalism

Please look into a user before reporting that they are committing vandalism. Your report of me to AIV was highly insulting. I have been an established editor on Wikipedia since 2004 and have not had any problem. Therefore, to suddenly find myself accused of "a massive vandalism campaign" is quite alarming. Please read and familiarize yourself with the guideline WP:AGF before accusing any others of vandalism.

While it may seem unlikely that Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb or the boxer, James J. Corbett appeared in vaudeville, all of them did and, with the exception of Ruth, did so successfully. They are all on the List of vaudeville performers that I have spent massive amounts of time creating. Thank you. *Exeunt* Ganymead | Dialogue? 21:14, 27 March 2007 (UTC)

  • Check the edit history. I was the admin that investigated the vandalism report and decided to dialog with you instead of block you outright. In short; I questioned your edits but I did not report you. See this entry in WP:AIV - Alison 21:25, 27 March 2007 (UTC)

No problem :) Keep up the good work - Alison 21:43, 27 March 2007 (UTC)
Thanks for letting me know about this and I've expressed my sincere regret to User:Ganymead who was upset. But, in my defense, when I suddenly saw multiple Vaudeville Cats popup on such improbable persons as Babe Ruth, Commissioner of Baseball Ford Frick and even a pancake mix trademark (Aunt Jemima) without any explanation in the articles as to the subject's connection with vaudeville, it appeared to be a spreading BOT-type attack of unknown dimensions possibly from a spoofed account. Not being an Admin. myself, I felt that an alert to AI/V was in order before further damage possibly ensued. I've suggested to [[User:Ganymead]it would be a good idea to explain in the article what the subject's connection is to vaudeville, as otherwise the categorization just kind of hangs there in mid-air leaving the nonplussed reader scratching his head. What is that people don't get about reporting vandals AFTER a final warning. I mean what is the logic of:

  1. Well they stopped vandalising after my warning, but I thought I'd report them anyway
  2. Someone gave them a warning last week/month/year so I didn't think I'd bother
  3. Well they only vandalised once- but it was to my favourite article

I mean serious- can we block people for stupid AIV reports? WjBscribe 21:46, 27 March 2007 (UTC)

I know!! Gotta keep checking those dates. There's a template somewhere for warning folks about how to properly report to AIV. Can't remember where it is, though. And hey - welcome to the job. Dirty, isn't it? :) - Alison 21:51, 27 March 2007 (UTC)

New clash on WP:RPP

Sorry Alison, we took care of this one at the same time, but took different decisions. I hope it's okay. :-) Regards, Húsönd 00:12, 28 March 2007 (UTC)

No problem at all. Thanks again - Alison 00:14, 28 March 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for reverting the vandalism of User:Mist25 to my homepage. If you see his edits, he has been trolling across articles and talk pages with extremely racist (Anti-Brahman/Dalitstan-type) vandalism and personal attacks. Can anything be done here? Mihirtheone 04:33, 28 March 2007 (UTC)

  • No problem. I saw his nasty comment on your userpage & that's where he stepped way over the line. If he vandalises articles again, warn him & explain what's wrong. If he persists, report his actions to WP:AIV and he will get a longer block until he learns to be civil and co-operate with others. Don't, though, blindly revert his edits or you will end up being blocked for WP:3RR - Alison 04:36, 28 March 2007 (UTC)

DD214

Hello Allison,

My cry baby competitor Steve Jones is complaining about DD214.us, which is a purely information only website (He is even favorably mentioned there). The mere fact that I sponsor the site seems to irk him. Did you bother to review the site? It is not spam, but provides useful information (that Mr. Jones doesn't want his prospective customers to see.)

You've fallen into his trap. Review the site on its merits, not by a competitor's self-interest.

Thanx. Martin dd214.us — Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.73.178.52 (talkcontribs)

  • Hi, Martin. The first thing to point out is that your site is a commercial link and you are promoting it here. Please read WP:EL to understand why that's not a good thing. Note also that you're misrepresenting it as a "useful information" site, which is misleading. Finally, you are also revert-warring on that article, which I am now watching. You're just about to get your first warning for [[WP:3RR] - Alison 17:52, 28 March 2007 (UTC)
  • Hi Alison. How is dd214.us a commercial link? Did you bother to review the site? So it has a sponsor, but what site doesn't? It is useful information collected at one site, that would take a user many minutes of Net hunting to discover - show me what's misleading. Geesh. dd214.us is perfectly in accord with "Sites that should be linked" under:
  1. Sites that contain neutral and accurate material that cannot be integrated into the Wikipedia article due to copyright issues, amount of detail (such as professional athlete statistics, movie or television credits, interview transcripts, or online textbooks) or other reasons.
  2. Sites with other meaningful, relevant content that is not suitable for inclusion in an article, such as reviews and interviews.
  • Just how many IP addresses have you got?? Please read WP:EL and WP:3RR. It's nothing but a spam link/site for Touchstone Research. Yeah, I've read it - Alison 18:13, 28 March 2007 (UTC)
  • Lots, dozens. Oh well, it's perfectly in accord with the guidelines. But that's your decision. On another note, I notice that you're into Irish Maritime issues. Did you like Wiki's RMS Republic article? Martin —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 66.65.140.148 (talk) 18:19, 28 March 2007 (UTC).
  • I presume that's this one. I'd not seen it before. It looks like a nice article at a glance (references are a mess, though) - and yet another H&W ship to end in tragedy. Did you work on that article? - Alison 18:23, 28 March 2007 (UTC)
  • I added a bit here and there. If the references could use some help, and it's in your area of interest, your talents would be welcome. The underlying research at rms-republic.com is all mine. Best, Martin. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 66.65.140.148 (talk) 18:59, 28 March 2007 (UTC).
  • I have a question for Alison. Why is dd214/us not ok and rms-republic/com is? Rms-republic is referenced about 20 times in the wiki article on the rms republic. Rms Republic is just a site promoting investing in a salvage business? I think you should look at that. After spending a bunch of time on it it is a business trying to raise big bucks. This guy must have a business plan that involves Wikipedia. Another Dubber.4.249.33.150 19:36, 30 March 2007 (UTC)
  • That's simple enough. RMS-Republic/com is original research, evaluated by many experts including the US DOJ. It is a historical site, and a historical endeavor - with information concerning this historic shipwreck that cannot be obtained elsewhere. Even Wiki rates it as a high value site. And, incidentally, where do you see a request for investment on that site? Such a request would be illegal and should be reported to the SEC. Martin Bayerle —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 74.73.178.52 (talk) 19:19, 31 March 2007 (UTC).
  • I'll bite. What is the SEC filing under? It seems this is totally a business site.4.249.33.126 15:59, 2 April 2007 (UTC)

I hope Big Jim and James Connolly would approve of my knowledge of the twin long struggles of labor and of Ireland. dd form 214

Alison,

Thanks for reviewing the "dd form 214" article. Sorry if I botched the wrong request for protection. There is a lot more that could be said, about the dd 214 form, but since I am in the business of obtaining them, alhough most of my business is historical military research, I have avoided editing the subject, because I didn't want to be prejudicial (sp). The independent researcher list is helpful to some extent, but most of the people on the list don't actually have researchers at that facility so I didn't add it. I think that the link to the NPRC is the most important link and should either appear in the text or at least ahead of the researcher list. Unfortunately most of the "Researchers" that do get records actually charge customers for faxing the request in themselves, which it what the NPRC actually tells them how to do on the link to the NPRC (Archives) that I posted. In reallity these " Researchers" are not getting the record, just charging to fax the request in. I am not skilled enought to edit, so if you want a better explanation, and want to edit the text to warn customers, I would be happy to discuss it further. Steve at lyonresearch dot com

Thanks

Steveljones 20:11, 28 March 2007 (UTC)

  • Steve Jones wants to have users search the net where he has a distinct advantage. His business spends a ton of money on all the search engines, so he ultimately gets the business in any "search the net" proposal. Going to the independent researcher list gives those reputable researchers an equal opportunity. If he believes that any researcher on that list is fraudulent, then I'm sure ever-watchful Steve will contact NARA. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 74.73.178.52 (talk) 19:27, 31 March 2007 (UTC).

Hello. You probably know this already seeing as you've been doing this much longer than I have. For edits like the one you commented on here User talk:69.230.178.81, I usually use {{subst:test-self}} because the user reverted his or her own test. ~a (usertalkcontribs) 22:30, 28 March 2007 (UTC)

RE:

Yeah that's the reason I only started with a frienly talk page warning, but his actitude was irrelevant and irritating, either way I didn't really violate WP:Civil, but he should have been warned by an admin they are the only users he seems to respect according to his edit but meh I won't keep a meaning less conflict like that alive I really don't care,I have to much work on other aspects of Wiki to mind that, Cheers! - 05:10, 29 March 2007 (UTC)

Yeah, I know. To get around that, just stick to boilerplate warnings like {{subst:uw-test1}} and the like. That way, it doesn't get personal. Thanks! - Alison 05:18, 29 March 2007 (UTC)

username

Usernames with the prefix Wiki are not in violation. I don't imply official role in Wikipedia, nor do I imply authority, such as sysop or bureaucrat. Wikipedia would be in violation. I reported that username because of the word pshycotic and death. It has become appearent that I don't understand the username policy enough to report blatantly inappropriete usernames at WP:AIV.--Wikipedier (talk contribs) 04:05, 30 March 2007 (UTC)

(editconflict) What I was pointing to was that yours is awfully close to WikipediA which would be an immediate disallow. I felt bad (which, of course, is neither here nor there) because that user was making good edits, wasn't warned and who's probably left now. I tend to hang out on WP:RFCN and usernames can be so subjective - Alison 04:13, 30 March 2007 (UTC)

I did not know that Wikipedia terms were not allowed, and I think I at least chose a good-faith username, as I looked at it as one. I am requesting to have my username changed, but I don't know how long that will take.--Wikipedier (talk contribs) 04:22, 31 March 2007 (UTC)

Username

Well, it seemed inappropriate, anyway maybe I was wrong, apologies! Tellyaddict 15:58, 30 March 2007 (UTC)

  • No need to apologize! You're doing a great job reporting vandals (I've seen you a lot on WP:AIV). The user's edits seemed newbie-ish but they weren't vandalism/attack so I'd AGF here and maybe put the name over on WP:RFCN if you're unsure. Thanks again! - Alison 16:01, 30 March 2007 (UTC)

Username

[9] I hope you were joking. You do realize that such usernames are usually created solely to disparage their subject? --May the Force be with you! Shreshth91 16:32, 30 March 2007 (UTC)

  • I maybe tend to WP:AGF a lot. There's nothing inherently wrong with the name (WP:U makes a vague reference to "implies [...] sexual orientation" which it could possibly fall under). I check that editor's edit history and their one edit wasn't explicitly vandalism [10] though was POV-laden. Am I possibly under-reacting here? - Alison 17:04, 30 March 2007 (UTC)

2nd opinion

Hi, could you take a look at an unblock request for me. I blocked Falcon866 indefinitely. He's generally quite a good contributor but has on two occasions gone on vandal sprees (including page moves that have needed admins to fix). He says he won't do it again but frankly I don't believe him. Would you mind taking a look at his talkpage and seeing if you agree? WjBscribe 17:41, 30 March 2007 (UTC)

  • Done, and I agree. I've left a message on their talk page. The page moves say it all - Alison 17:46, 30 March 2007 (UTC)
    • Looking through your contribs I see nothing out of the ordinary. I think people are trying to force far too many borderline username issues through WP:AIV because of the amount of bureaucracy that has been (probably necessarily) introduced into WP:RFCN. I agree that ideally username issues should be discussed with the user first but its a lot to ask of people who would rather spend their time fighting vandals or writing encyclopedic content. I think your calls have been correct. I agree about the Gay Jew from Portland- this could be a pride statement as much as to disparage the subject. Those accounts definitely need to be given a chance to clarify before their blocked- though I think vandal edits tip the balance in favour of blocking. Lets remember most accounts created never edit- its possible to make far too much out of username blocks (one way or the other). You're doing a great a job as far as I can see. WjBscribe 23:06, 30 March 2007 (UTC)
      • Thanks for the review and feedback. I was a bit unsure as I'm only new at the job here & just want to make sure I'm being fair and balanced. Re. RFCN, I feel that people tend to overreact there & that way too much emphasis is placed on such things. Thanks again for the check-in :) - Alison 16:14, 1 April 2007 (UTC)

Article deletion

I am curious as to why you chose to delete my article about the Pasatiempo Golf Club in California on 31/03/07. Reason cited was "blatant advertising". I am very disappointed in your descision. I had been adding some information about a place and an important historical golfing figure (course designer and golfing professional Alister MacKenzie) which was not available on wikipedia. I am not connected to this golf club in any way so i can assure you advertising was not my intention. Steve Bell 18:53, 31 March 2007

  • As part of CAT:CSD patrol, this article was speedy deleted as it had a {{db-ad}} tag on it. I reviewed it and deleted it along with dozens of others. Right now, it does read like a blatant advert and it needs serious re-work if it is to be kept as a viable article. I've undeleted it (it was Pasatiempo) and moved it to Pasatiempo Golf Club. However, if it's not reworked it'll probably get speedied again. - Alison 18:58, 31 March 2007 (UTC)
