History of Hawaii: 31 March 2016[edit]

Your revisions on the History of Hawaii merely revert it back to uncited and biased statements. For instance I had corrected the mistakes in the population numbers cited from Robert Schmitt and provided actual citations, yet you merely reverted it back to the original mistakes and deleted all the scholarly citations. Further Patrick V. Kirch as of 2010 has since changed his mind to a later time period as have all the earlier scholars who originally went so far back as 125 AD (which was based on a single radiocarbon date on a fishhook which could not be repeated when tested again, aka he made a mistake). While you're claiming I'm giving undo weight to one theory, its actually not limited to just one study but 70 years of radiocarbon dating of the actual evidence. Its more ridiculous that you also revert the article to debunked ones and ones in which the original scientists has since revised to later dates (as I cited explicitly in detail).

History of Hawaii needs to have the period between Cook and Annexation in there as I had explained. Your inclusion in History of Hawaii of the origins of Kamehameha seems entirely misplaced and adds nothing to the social and government rules and laws that shaped Hawaii during that critical period.

Look, if you can't be honest just stay off my page and discuss on the article talk page. And sign your posts. Yes, the article has a good deal of work ahead but, I did not "merely revert back".--Mark Miller (talk) 17:46, 1 April 2016 (UTC)

DRN help needed and volunteer roll call[edit]

You are receiving this message because you have listed yourself on the list of volunteers at Wikipedia:Dispute resolution noticeboard/Volunteering#List of the DRN volunteers.

First, assistance is needed at DRN. We have recently closed a number of cases without any services being provided for lack of a volunteer willing to take the case. There are at least three cases awaiting a volunteer at this moment. Please consider taking one.

Second, this is a volunteer roll call. If you remain interested in helping at DRN and are willing to actively do so by taking at least one case (and seeing it through) or helping with administrative matters at least once per calendar month, please add your name to this roll call list. Individuals currently on the principal volunteer list who do not add their name on the roll call list will be removed from the principal volunteer list after June 30, 2016 unless the DRN Coordinator chooses to retain their name for the best interest of DRN or the encyclopedia. Individuals whose names are removed after June 30, 2016, should feel free to re-add their names to the principal volunteer list, but are respectfully requested not to do so unless they are willing to take part at DRN at least one time per month as noted above. No one is going to be monitoring to see if you live up to that commitment, but we respectfully ask that you either live up to it or remove your name from the principal volunteer list.

Editor of the Week : nominations needed![edit]

The Editor of the Week initiative has been recognizing editors since 2013 for their hard work and dedication. Editing Wikipedia can be disheartening and tedious at times; the weekly Editor of the Week award lets its recipients know that their positive behaviour and collaborative spirit is appreciated. The response from the honorees has been enthusiastic and thankful.

The list of nominees is running short, and so new nominations are needed for consideration. Have you come across someone in your editing circle who deserves a pat on the back for improving article prose regularly, making it easier to understand? Or perhaps someone has stepped in to mediate a contentious dispute, and did an excellent job. Do you know someone who hasn't received many accolades and is deserving of greater renown? Is there an editor who does lots of little tasks well, such as cleaning up citations?

Please help us thank editors who display sustained patterns of excellence, working tirelessly in the background out of the spotlight, by submitting your nomination for Editor of the Week today!

Wiki Loves Pride 2016[edit]

As a participant of WikiProject LGBT studies, you are invited to participate in the third annual Wiki Loves Pride campaign, which runs through the month of June. The purpose of the campaign is to create and improve content related to LGBT culture and history. How can you help?

  1. Create or improve LGBT-related Wikipedia pages and showcase the results of your work here
  2. Document local LGBT culture and history by taking pictures at pride events and uploading your images to Wikimedia Commons
  3. Contribute to an LGBT-related task force at another Wikimedia project (Wikidata, Wikimedia Commons, Wikivoyage, etc.)

Looking for topics? The Tasks page, which you are welcome to update, offers some ideas and wanted articles.

This campaign is supported by the Wikimedia LGBT+ User Group, an officially recognized affiliate of the Wikimedia Foundation. The group's mission is to develop LGBT-related content across all Wikimedia projects, in all languages. Visit the affiliate's page at Meta-Wiki for more information, or follow Wikimedia LGBT+ on Facebook. Remember, Wiki Loves Pride is about creating and improving LGBT-related content at Wikimedia projects, and content should have a neutral point of view. One does not need to identify as LGBT or any other gender or sexual minority to participate. This campaign is about adding accurate, reliable information to Wikipedia, plain and simple, and all are welcome! If you have any questions, please leave a message on the campaign's talk page.

Thanks, and happy editing! ---Another Believer (Talk) 19:44, 30 May 2016 (UTC)

Hello everyone, welcome to the June 2016 GOCE newsletter. It's been a few months since we sent one out; we hope y'all haven't forgotten about the Guild! Your coordinators have been busy behind the scenes as usual, though real life has a habit of reducing our personal wiki-time. The May backlog reduction drive, the usual coordinating tasks and preparations for the June election are keeping us on our toes!

May drive: Thanks to everyone who participated in last month's record-setting backlog reduction drive. Of the 29 people who signed up, 16 copyedited at least one article, 197 copyedits were recorded on the drive page, and the copyedit backlog fell below 1,500 for the first time! Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here.

June Blitz: this one-week copy-editing blitz will occur from 12 June through 18 June; the themes will be video games and Asian geography.

Coordinator elections: It's election time again; how quickly they seem to roll around! Nominations for the next tranche of Guild coordinators, who will serve a six-month term that begins at 00:01 UTC on 1 July and ends at 23:59 UTC on 31 December, opens at 00:01 UTC on 1 June and closes at 23:59 UTC on 15 June. Voting takes place between 00:01 UTC on 16 June and 23:59 UTC on 30 June. If you'd like to assist behind the scenes, please consider stepping forward; self-nominations are welcomed and encouraged. All Wikipedia editors in good standing are eligible; remember it's your Guild, and it doesn't run itself!

Thank you all again for your participation; we wouldn't be able to achieve what we have without you! Cheers from your GOCE coordinators Jonesey95, Miniapolis and Baffle gab1978.

Hello Mark Miller, just want to let you know that I have finished my expansion on the article for the horror film I Drink Your Blood and I have already incorporated what I have done so far on the draft page into the actual article itself. However its still needs a little more work done to it though, namely giving proper citations to unsourced material, updating citations, and expanding the section on the film's controversy. At the moment I am finished with the article, and I am leaving it up to others to further modify and expand it. I am also working on a new article to collaborate on for WikiProject Horror. It is the article on the infamous horror character Leatherface which is pretty significant but, unfortunately, it is in a state of severe underdevelopment and suffering from poor writing and few sources. My plan is to expand it significantly so that it reaches its full potential, and quite possibly become a featured article like the one on Jason Voorhees. However, for this particular project I will need the help of as many editors as possible since the level of expansion needed would be too daunting for any one or even three editors. Similar to the other collaboration that I have done with I Drink Your Blood, I have already created a draft for the use of expanding the article which I will include the link here. Let me know whether or not you would be able to help expand the article on my talk page and see if you can get other people on this.

Hello everyone, and welcome to the September 2016 GOCE newsletter.

>>> Sign up for the September Drive, already in progress! <<<

July Drive: The July drive was a roaring success. We set out to remove April, May, and June 2015 from our backlog (our 149 oldest articles), and by 23 July, we were done with those months. We added July 2015 (66 articles) and copy-edited 37 of those. We also handled all of the remaining Requests from June 2016. Well done! Overall, we recorded copy edits to 240 articles by 20 editors, reducing our total backlog to 13 months and 1,656 articles, the second-lowest month-end total ever.

August Blitz: this one-week copy-editing blitz ran from 21 through 27 August; the theme was sports-related articles in honor of the 2016 Summer Olympics. Of the eight editors who signed up, five editors removed 11 articles from the backlog. A quiet blitz – everyone must be on vacation. Barnstars and rollover totals are located here. Thanks to all editors who took part.

Thank you all again for your participation; we wouldn't be able to achieve what we have without you! Cheers from your GOCE coordinators: Jonesey95, Corinne and Tdlsk.

The Real History Of Hawaii: From Origins To The End Of The Monarchy[edit]

Hello. The Real History Of Hawaii: From Origins To The End Of The Monarchy is a copy of wikipedia not the other way around. You can tell by looking at other paragraphs which are copied and paste from the wiki article. The book was published in 2013 and the text (I'm pretty sure I wrote it all in the past) has been here since at least December of 2012. Actually the text in one form or another has been on Wikipedia since August 1, 2008. When using Google Books please make sure to check the legitimacy of the source first before trusting it. --KAVEBEAR (talk) 05:11, 26 September 2016 (UTC)

Thanks, I hadn't had a chance to check that but figured it might be noticed by you and would know. As long as there is no earlier e-book publication then it would be considered circular in its history with Wikipedia and the original author of the text as the original source, however the book itself does not denote being a collection of Wikipedia articles as most do.--Mark Miller (talk) 21:57, 26 September 2016 (UTC)

Condensing references[edit]

Hey. Would you mind if we start condensing references when it is appropriate? For example the information in "World Monarchies and Dynasties" can probably be found in Kuykendall's book.--KAVEBEAR (talk) 04:18, 29 September 2016 (UTC)

No, I don't support giving so much weight to just a few authors. If there are other reliable sources we should be using them as well.--Mark Miller (talk) 04:20, 29 September 2016 (UTC)
I think we would be using the most expansive sources as possible. Have you seen how other Feature quality articles like Queen Victoria are written? Her articles uses https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Queen_Victoria#Notes_and_references. I don't expect you to agree. I won't fight it but I will use the more reliable sources above the brief mentioning in obscure books. I will just agree not to remove the ones you add.--KAVEBEAR (talk) 04:24, 29 September 2016 (UTC)
First of all, that article has some problems that need cleaning up and is not at a true FA quality. There are claims in notes and references that have no inline citations. The format of the article Liliuokalani uses short references. You did an extensive amount of work formatting many of them. I prefer to stick with the same formatting we have both been doing on other articles and attempt to source with reliable book sources where we can and only use online sources of very high quality. Also, even the Queen Victoria article cannot be used to demonstrate how many actual sources to use. They are different subjects. I prefer having explanatory notes separate from the inline citations and I prefer to title the header as Citations to make it clear these are not the references themselves. I don't use Bibliographies unless the work is being used as an overarching source. Perhaps we could add a bibliography for these authors instead of over citing them.
From Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Layout#Standard appendices and footers; Contents: This section, or series of sections, may contain any or all of the following:
  1. Explanatory footnotes that give information which is too detailed or awkward to be in the body of the article,
  2. Citation footnotes (either short citations or full citations) that connect specific material in the article with specific sources,
  3. Full citations to sources, if short citations are used in the footnotes
  4. General references (full bibliographic citations to sources that were consulted in writing the article but that are not explicitly connected to any specific material in the article)

.--Mark Miller (talk) 04:32, 29 September 2016 (UTC)

I think we can discuss these stylistic difference down the line. We get too bog down by these often...I love the progress the three of us were able to do this article at the moment. --KAVEBEAR (talk) 04:37, 29 September 2016 (UTC)

I think we are but I just want to make sure you understand I am not just being picky but trying to standardize the article's I write in much the same way you have. --Mark Miller (talk) 04:40, 29 September 2016 (UTC)

Liliuokalani royal honor[edit]

I don't think there are any reliable sources for this matter except Christopher Buyer's Royal Ark website: http://www.royalark.net/Hawaii/hawaii9.htm..."Proclaimed as Queen on the death of her brother, 29th January 1891. Sovereign Grand Master of the Royal Orders of Kamehameha I, Kalakaua I, Kapi'olani, the Crown of Hawaii, and the Star of Oceania......,Rcvd: GC of the Orders of Kamehameha (4.2.1879), Kalakaua I (4.2.1879), Crown of Hawaii (12.2.1883), and Star of Oceania (1887), and Precious Crown of Japan (1890), Queen Victoria Jubilee Medal (1887)." The list of Royal orders on Hawaii's Queen belongs to her husband not her which is why they are listed after his name. They are listed in Buyer's source as well. At the moment there is no way to corrobate her actual honors using reliable sources.--KAVEBEAR (talk) 01:57, 13 October 2016 (UTC)

All of the Grand Commander stuff is from her book in an earlier edition. As queen she had the same position and title to the royal orders of Hawaaii as Kalakaua had and some editional that were awarded to her. Buyer is not a reliable source.--Mark Miller (talk) 02:13, 13 O ctober 2016 (UTC)
It from her book yes but they are listed after her husband's name which means they are his royal orders not hers. Check Thrums Hawaiian Almanac 1877-1891; they are all listed as belonging to Dominis. I've uploaded all of them here commons:Category:The Court, Hawaiian Almanac and Annual. Given this it makes more sense to remove it completely because it is not sourceable--KAVEBEAR (talk) 02:22, 13 October 2016 (UTC)
That's because its a list of illustrations. There is no record of Dominis having any of that but there is record of Kalakaua when he was proclaimed king. Are you telling me Queen Liliuokalani deferred all those titles from her brother as monarch to her husband the queen's consort?--Mark Miller (talk) 02:34, 13 October 2016 (UTC)
There are reliable sources but it is going to take digging.--Mark Miller (talk) 02:36, 13 October 2016 (UTC)
Those pages don't confirm your interpretation. All those Royal awards are under HER bio, and after the mention of who SHE married. They are NOT his awards.--Mark Miller (talk) 02:39, 13 October 2016 (UTC)
Please look again and understand the punctuations. The list of order comes directly after his name and ends with a period before going back to the last sentence which relates to her. It also listed Member of the Privy Council of State among those honors. Liliuokalani was never a member of the Privy Council. You can check the minutes of the Privy Council [1]. Only Dominis is listed as a member. It is a clearly a list of honors and positions associated with her husband. The first one in 1878 list John Owen Dominis, Governor of Oahu, and then the list of orders, Member of House of Nobles and Privy Council, etc., etc. She wasn't a member of the House of Nobles either.--KAVEBEAR (talk) 02:48, 13 October 2016 (UTC)
No sir. you are flat out wrong. Period.
Members of the Court, Hawaiian Almanac and Annual for 1890.jpg
This reads as follows;
Her Royal Highness the Princess Liliuokalani,
Heir Apparent, b. September 2, 1838; m. Sep-
tember 16, 1862, to the Honorable John Owen
Dominis, K.G.C. of the Royal Orders of
Kamehameha I and Kalakaua; Kt. Com. of the
Orders of Francis Joseph and Isabella Catolica;
Member of the Privy Council of the State, etc.
Proclaimed Heir Apparent to the Throne, April
11, 1877

You are simply wrong. I am placing the content back. Should you wish to challenge this further it should be taken to the article talk page or the Reliable Sources Noticeboard for community input. The separation of the content is clearly done using the ;symbol. Dominis is attributed here with the Knights Grand Cross of Kamehameha I and Kalakaua, but the Knight Commander positions are referring to Liliuokalani.--Mark Miller (talk) 03:14, 13 October 2016 (UTC)

WikiProject Good Articles's 2016-2017 GA Cup[edit]

WikiProject Good Articles's 2016-2017 GA Cup
Symbol support vote.svg

Greetings, all!

We would like to announce the start of the 4th GA Cup, a competition that seeks to encourage the reviewing of Good article nominations! Thus far, there have been three GA Cups, which were successful in reaching our goals of significantly reducing the traditionally long queue at GAN, so we're doing it again. Currently, there are over 400 nominations listed. We hope that we can again make an impact this time.

The 4th GA Cup will begin on November 1, 2016. Four rounds are currently scheduled (which will bring the competition to a close on February 28, 2017), but this may change based on participant numbers. We may take a break in December for the holidays, depending on the results of a poll of our participants taken shortly after the competition begins. The sign-up and submissions process will remain the same, as will the scoring.

Sign-ups for the upcoming competition are currently open and will close on November 14, 2016. Everyone is welcome to join; new and old editors, so sign-up now!

If you have any questions, take a look at the FAQ page and/or contact one of the judges.

Cheers from Template:Noping, Template:Noping, Template:Noping, Template:Noping, and Template:Noping. We apologize for the delay in sending out this message until after the competition has started. Thank you to Krishna Chaitanya Velaga for aiding in getting this message out.

Copyeditors progress.png

Hello everyone, and welcome to the December 2016 GOCE newsletter. We had an October newsletter all set to go, but it looks like we never pushed the button to deliver it, so this one contains a few months of updates. We have been busy and successful!

Template:Center

Coordinator elections for the first half of 2017: Nominations are open for election of Coordinators for the first half of 2017. Please visit the election page to nominate yourself or another editor, and then return after December 15 to vote. Thanks for participating!

September Drive: The September drive was fruitful. We set out to remove July through October 2015 from our backlog (an ambitious 269 articles), and by the end of the month, we had cut that pile of oldest articles to just 83. We reduced our overall backlog by 97 articles, even with new copyedit tags being added to articles every day. We also handled 75% of the remaining Requests from August 2016. Overall, 19 editors recorded copy edits to 233 articles (over 378,000 words).

October Blitz: this one-week copy-editing blitz ran from 16 through 22 October; the theme was Requests, since the backlog was getting a bit long. Of the 16 editors who signed up, 10 editors completed 29 requests. Barnstars and rollover totals are located here. Thanks to all editors who took part.

November Drive: The November drive was a record-breaker! We set out to remove September through December 2015 from our backlog (239 articles), and by the end of the month, we had cut that pile of old articles to just 66, eliminating the two oldest months! We reduced our overall backlog by 523 articles, to a new record low of 1,414 articles, even with new tags being added to articles every day, which means we removed copy-editing tags from over 800 articles. We also handled all of the remaining Requests from October 2016. Officially, 14 editors recorded copy edits to 200 articles (over 312,000 words), but over 600 articles, usually quick fixes and short articles, were not recorded on the drive page.

Housekeeping note: we do not send a newsletter before every drive or blitz. To have a better chance of knowing when the next event will start, add the GOCE's message box to your Watchlist.

Thank you all again for your participation; we wouldn't be able to achieve what we have without you! Cheers from your GOCE coordinators: Template:Noping, Template:Noping and Template:Noping.

WikiCup December newsletter: WikiCup 2017[edit]

On 1 January 2017, WikiCup 2017 (the 10th Annual WikiCup) will begin. This year we are trying something a little different – monetary prizes.

For the WC2017 the prizes will be as follows (amounts are based in US$ and will be awarded in the form of an online Amazon gift certificate):

  • First place – $200
  • Second & Third place – $50 each
  • Category prizes – $25 per category (which will be limited to FA, FL, FP, GA, and DYK for 2017). Winning a category prize does not require making it to the final round.

Note: Monetary prizes are a one-year experiment for 2017 and may or may not be continued in the future. In order to be eligible to receive any of the prizes above, the competing Wikipedia account must have a valid/active email address.

After two years as a WikiCup judge, Figureskatingfan is stepping down. We thank her for her contributions as a WikiCup judge. We are pleased to announce that our newest judge is two-time WikiCup champion Cwmhiraeth.

Editor of the Week seeking nominations (and a new facilitator)[edit]

In addition, the WikiProject is seeking a new facilitator/coordinator to handle the logistics of the award. Please contact Template:Noping if you are interested in helping with the logistics of running the award in any capacity. Remove your name from here to unsubscribe from further EotW-related messages. Thanks, Kevin (aka L235 · t · c) via MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 05:19, 30 December 2016 (UTC)

Copyright issue on Pussyhat manufacture?[edit]

Hi, I'm a little curious as to why "knit, crochet or sew" was changed in the Women's March article. I was unaware one could copyright a description of crafting. :) Thanks for your help on the article. LovelyLillith (talk) 23:19, 25 January 2017 (UTC)

That is directly from the source and is not a common phrase. It should not have been used word for word.--Mark Miller (talk) 23:24, 25 January 2017 (UTC)
Seriously...you are unaware of copyright on crafting descriptions in writing and publishing?--Mark Miller (talk) 23:26, 25 January 2017 (UTC)
Is it possible I might know what I'm talking about and even have some experience is sewing and crafting as well as how Wikipedia handles close paraphrasing and word for word lifting of parts of the source? --Mark Miller (talk) 00:39, 26 January 2017 (UTC)

Mark, chill, no need to be condescending. I was trying to be friendly. If you do a simple Google search, you will see that exact phrase used by pretty much anyone who does those crafts, in multiple contexts, as a descriptor. Is it possible I worked for a yarn store for years, have done all of those crafts for decades and was involved with the Pussyhat Project from near the beginning? LovelyLillith (talk) 17:35, 27 January 2017 (UTC)

Is it possible I was also aware or thought that might be the case...and that IS THE POINT. There is a slight bias towards the exact wording used that I noticed. If you are involved with the project...you have a clear conflict of interest. I want to be friendly as well. I am a seamstress (there is no male gender description) and support many causes like this, but we do not write about protests and demonstrations we are directly connected with.--Mark Miller (talk) 23:18, 27 January 2017 (UTC)

By "being involved with" I meant that I (and many others) participated in online forum discussions as well as in hatmaking, not "am one of the organizers" or "am one of the people named in the article" or "am being paid to promote something". I did walk in a local march, and if you feel I need to state that on the talk page, I will. The only "bias" I have is In separating the craft types from each other, as it is a common mistake made by many who don't know there is a difference. Everything I have posted has been a fact referenced by a RS, or fixing vandalism and typos, and it remains that "knit, crochet or sew" is a very common phrase that is easily found all over the Net and in crafting guilds that is not specifically referring to the hats. That's all. LovelyLillith (talk) 06:43, 28 January 2017 (UTC)

"I meant that I (and many others) participated in online forum discussions as well as in hatmaking, not "am one of the organizers" In other words, someone with a general interest in the subject and supporter of the general idea. Yeah, there's nothing wrong with that. Being in one of the marches is participation but not conflict of interest. Knitting and crocheting are very commonly referenced together but sewing is not generally referenced with those methods because they are very different. Basically, there was no reason to paraphrase or use the exact order from the source even with limited information or references. What actually constitutes a copyright "violation" is far more than what I perceived as an "issue" and is being cautious. In the future, even if the issue pertains to copyright, it might be better not to actually use the word in the edit summary as it tends to draw the eye giving it undue attention.--Mark Miller (talk) 21:55, 28 January 2017 (UTC)
For a tiny phrase like that, it can only be phrased a few ways. It's perfectly fine to use it. Putting that phrasing into quotes would be the best option here, especially since it is a sourced item in the article. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 02:56, 26 January 2017 (UTC)
No. I disagree. The source was specific if not entirely correct about the methods because they were unsure. It is using their intent and not just the information and uses the exact wording.--Mark Miller (talk) 05:40, 26 January 2017 (UTC)
It is also then cleared up with added wording that is to general not be able to used and from another source; "knitted".--Mark Miller (talk) 05:45, 26 January 2017 (UTC)
There may be a pattern for crocheting but I have not exactly seen this worded in that manner yet but I can check the main site and I'm still researching this. The main image we use is knitted but the corner of an ear of another hat is shown that might be crocheted.--Mark Miller (talk) 06:00, 26 January 2017 (UTC)
OK the site has a separate pattern for each so it can mention each of those methods but again, not in the specific manner of source because the correct information is actually that the project provides a pattern to knitting, crocheting and sewing methods.--Mark Miller (talk) 06:04, 26 January 2017 (UTC)
It doesn't matter regarding whether it's crocheted or knitted. My point (which I was very clear about) is that simply placing the quoted part in quotes would be acceptable since that was already sourced. The rest of what you are discussing is irrelevant to my comment. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 06:53, 26 January 2017 (UTC)
I am not having a problem understanding you. I am explaining that the information being summarized was specific and specialized and not general information or phrasing. In this instance, the way the source wrote the line this content comes from, using that exact wording and nothing beyond that reflects the bias or lack of information in the same manner as the author intent or direction. It may only be three words but they were placed in the same order as source and conveyed the same bias or lack of clarity the source makes. Here is the exact snippet from the source; Template:Quote
Here is the way it was worded; Template:Quote
I changed pattern to technique because the source doesn't use the term and it implies a premade design. The original way that was written is more than close paraphrasing but that specific use of pattern was also not sourced. Then I made sure to add the primary source and use it as the source that the project actually provided patterns for multiple techniques. And that is kind of important because a sewing technique can't use a knitting or crocheting pattern. I do stand by my edit summary,--Mark Miller (talk) 07:35, 26 January 2017 (UTC)
Also, we cannot add quotes unless the source uses them and the reason I didn't take a snippet quote with attribution to the author in text was for undue weight to one author.--Mark Miller (talk) 08:55, 26 January 2017 (UTC)

Social media posts as reliable sources[edit]

Just a heads up for you (based on this post): If the social media accounts can be verified as belonging to the person or company in question, then they can be considered reliable sources. They can not be used to establish notability, but they can definitely be used for sourcing information in an article. Please let me know if you have any questions regarding this. Thanks for all your hard work! ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 02:52, 26 January 2017 (UTC)

That is not entirely correct. Anyone can create a Tweeter account. It would be completely different if it were an official website. It can only be used for claims about the person...the persosn is making themselves to source content about them. But again, just because they have a tweeter account does not mean that is their official site. In this specific instance you link to the talk page an not the content that was added so, it might at least be good to mention that it was inflammatory content that was being analyzed and was original research.--Mark Miller (talk) 05:37, 26 January 2017 (UTC)
Please read again what I wrote: "If the social media accounts can be verified as belonging to the person or company in question, then they can be considered reliable sources." I linked to your comment on that talk page where you stated that they can never be considered reliable sources. This is false. If you had stated something along the lines of, "In this case, the content being referenced could not be reliably sourced to that social media post because of XXX or YYY", then that would have been a different story. Please don't make blanket statements like that so we can avoid any confusion on that in the future. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 06:51, 26 January 2017 (UTC)
"I wrote: "If the social media accounts can be verified as belonging to the person or company in question, then they can be considered reliable sources." I got that. I disagree.
A social media tweet is never a "reliable source". It is always a "Questionable and self-published source" WP:QUESTIONABLE (some bolding for emphasis);
Self-published or questionable sources may be used as sources of information about themselves, especially in articles about themselves, without the requirement that they be published experts in the field, so long as the following criteria are met:
  • The material is neither unduly self-serving nor an exceptional claim.
  • It does not involve claims about third parties (such as people, organizations, or other entities).
  • It does not involve claims about events not directly related to the subject.
  • There is no reasonable doubt as to its authenticity.
  • The article is not based primarily on such sources.
These requirements also apply to pages from social networking websites such as Twitter, Tumblr, and Facebook.
I am sorry but that exceptional claim was being sourced to just a twitter account and does involve events not directly related to the subject and other entities or organizations. BLP policy says never use except in the above manner and I think at one time that said "official website". At any rate no, it is not a "reliable source as Wikipedia:Verifiability identifies. Again, I stand by what I said.--Mark Miller (talk) 07:59, 26 January 2017 (UTC)

Guild of Copy Editors February 2017 News[edit]

Guild of Copy Editors February 2017 News
Writing Magnifying.PNG

Copyeditors progress.png

Hello everyone, and welcome to the February 2017 GOCE newsletter. The Guild has been busy since the last time your coordinators sent out a newsletter!

Template:Center

December blitz: This one-week copy-editing blitz ran from 11 through 17 December; the themes were Requests and eliminating the November 2015 backlog. Of the 14 editors who signed up, nine editors completed 29 articles. Barnstars and rollover totals are located here. Thanks to all who took part.

January drive: The January drive was a great success. We set out to remove December 2015 and January and February 2016 from our backlog (195 articles), and by 22 January we had cleared those and had to add a third month (March 2016). At the end of the month we had almost cleared out that last month as well, for a total of 180 old articles removed from the backlog! We reduced our overall backlog by 337 articles, to a low of 1,465 articles, our second-lowest month-end total ever. We also handled all of the remaining requests from December 2016. Officially, 19 editors recorded 337 copy edits (over 679,000 words).

February blitz: The one-week February blitz, focusing on the remaining March 2016 backlog and January 2017 requests, ran from 12 to 18 February. Seven editors reduced the total in those two backlog segments from 32 to 10 articles, leaving us in good shape going in to the March drive.

Coordinator elections for the first half of 2017: In December, coordinators for the first half of 2017 were elected. Jonesey95 stepped aside as lead coordinator, remaining as coordinator and allowing Miniapolis to be the lead, and Tdslk and Corinne returned as coordinators. Thanks to all who participated!

Speaking of coordinators, congratulations to Template:Noping on their well-deserved induction into the Guild of Copy Editors Hall of Fame. The plaque reads: "For dedicated service as lead coordinator (2014, 1 July – 31 December 2015 and all of 2016) and coordinator (1 January – 30 June 2015 and 1 January – 30 June 2017); exceptional template-creation work (considerably streamlining project administration), and their emphasis on keeping the GOCE a drama-free zone."

Housekeeping note: We do not send a newsletter before every drive or blitz. To have a better chance of knowing when the next event will start, add the GOCE's message box to your watchlist.

Thank you all again for your participation; we wouldn't be able to achieve what we have without you! Cheers from your GOCE coordinators: Template:Noping, Template:Noping, Template:Noping and Template:Noping.

March Madness 2017[edit]

G'day all, please be advised that throughout March 2017 the Military history Wikiproject is running its March Madness drive. This is a backlog drive that is focused on several key areas:

  • tagging and assessing articles that fall within the project's scope
  • updating the project's currently listed A-class articles to ensure their ongoing compliance with the listed criteria
  • creating articles that are listed as "requested" on the project's various task force pages or other lists of missing articles.

As with past Milhist drives, there are points awarded for working on articles in the targeted areas, with barnstars being awarded at the end for different levels of achievement.

The drive is open to all Wikipedians, not just members of the Military history project, although only work on articles that fall (broadly) within the military history scope will be considered eligible. More information can be found here for those that are interested, and members can sign up as participants at that page also.

The drive starts at 00:01 UTC on 1 March and runs until 23:59 UTC on 31 March 2017, so please sign up now.

For the Milhist co-ordinators. Regards, AustralianRupert (talk) & MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 07:24, 26 February 2017 (UTC)

March 2017 WikiCup newsletter[edit]

And so ends the first round of the competition, with 4 points required to qualify for round 2. It would have been 5 points, but when a late entrant was permitted to join the contest in February, a promise was made that his inclusion would not result in the exclusion of any other competitor. To achieve this, the six entrants that had the lowest positive score of 4 points have been added to the 64 people who otherwise would have qualified. As a result, some of the groups have nine contestants rather than eight. Our top four scorers in round 1 were:

  • Template:Flagicon Cas Liber, last year's winner, led the field with two featured articles on birds and a total score of 674.
  • Template:Flagicon Iry-Hor, a WikiCup newcomer, came next with a featured article, a good article and a tally of 282 bonus points for a score of 517. All these points came from the article Nyuserre Ini, an Ancient Egyptian pharaoh,
  • Template:Flagicon 1989, another WikiCup newcomer, was in joint third place at 240. 1989 has claimed points for two featured lists and one good article relating to anime and comedy series, all of which were awarded bonus points.
  • Template:Flagicon Peacemaker67 shared third place with five good articles and thirteen good article reviews, mostly on naval vessels. He is also new to the competition.

The largest number of DYKs have been submitted by Vivvt and The C of E, who each claimed for seven, and MBlaze Lightning achieved eight articles at ITN. Carbrera and Peacemaker67 each claimed for five GAs and Krishna Chaitanya Velaga was well out in front for GARs, having reviewed 32. No featured pictures, featured topics or good topics yet, but we have achieved three featured articles and a splendid total of fifty good articles.

So, on to the second round. Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 1 but before the start of round 2 can be claimed in round 2. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points equally.

If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is a good article candidate, a featured process, or anything else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to help keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! At Mail list on meta is discussed the possibility of creating a genealogy-related Wikimedia email list. In order to request the creation of such a list, we need your voice and your vote.

In order to create a new list, we need to put a request it in Phabricator, and add a link to reasoning/explanation of purpose, and link to community consensus. Therefore we need your vote for this now, so we can request the creation of the mail list.

Read more about this email list at Meta; Wikimedia genealogy project mail list where you can support the creation of the mail list with your vote, in case you haven't done so already.
