Retirement and reflection

[edit]

Hello everyone! It has been a little over five years since I first joined Wikipedia, and while I am grateful for everything that I learned as an editor and for all of the wonderful people I have met on here, I have decided to retire. During the end of 2020, I realized I was spending a significant amount of time and energy on Wikipedia, and I would prefer to put that into other projects. Maybe one day I will come back and edit again, but right now, I need to take time away from editting.

I wish I could thank everyone that I have talked with and work in this message, but instead of leaving an obnoxiously long list of pings, I will highlight four editors. I would like to thank @Another Believer: for helping with my first edits and @Mike Christie: for helping me so much with my first FAC. Both of you made such a warm and welcoming atmosphere, which really encouraged me to stick with Wikipedia for this long. Thank you to @Brandt Luke Zorn: and @Moisejp: for I have learned so much from our discussions and both of your FAC reviews.

I had a lot of fun with Wikipedia over these last five years. It is strange for me to think about how I became an editor during my first year as a M.A. student. It all feels like way more than five years ago, but at the same time, it feels weird to think that much time has passed already. Good luck to everyone on here with their Wikipedia projects and off-Wiki work! Aoba47 (talk) 23:59, 6 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Aoba47, Balance is important. I hope you'll return some day in whatever capacity works best for you. Thanks for your quality contributions to Wikipedia! Until next time, ---Another Believer (Talk) 00:03, 7 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
And thank you for your kindness when I was an incredibly new editor. Thank you for everything you do on here! Aoba47 (talk) 00:12, 7 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Aw, I'll miss you, Aoba, and I'm flattered that you found my help so helpful. But I agree with Another Believer that balance is important. Part of me would also like to spend a lot more time on Wikipedia, but I've made other commitments and have other projects, and when I think about how I miss my Wikipedia time, I remember that my other stuff is important too. I'm sure you must be excited about the other projects that you'll now be able to dedicate yourself more to. I wish you the best of luck with all your future endeavours! Take care. Moisejp (talk) 01:23, 7 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

  • Thank you! I've always had trouble with balance and time management, but I'm focusing on getting better at that with the new year. I am very excited for the new year even with all of the craziness going on. You take care as well! Aoba47 (talk) 02:28, 7 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Lots of luck, Aoba47; enjoy your time off Wikipedia, and come back if and when the time is right. You've done a lot to improve the encyclopedia and that's the best thing anyone can say of any editor. Mike Christie (talk - contribs - library) 12:02, 7 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

What I said here; be well, Aoba47! Best regards, SandyGeorgia (Talk) 15:45, 7 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Wishing the best. If you are back you are always welcome.Tintor2 (talk) 03:27, 9 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Good luck in the future dude! The Ultimate Boss (talk) 07:24, 10 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I will sure miss you a lot, Aoba. Thank you for your valuable contributions to the site, and for your civility and kindness that I myself still need to improve. As I had said somewhere earlier in your talk page, I wish to personally stay in touch with you through email if possible. Good luck with your off-wiki duties, and stay healthy! (talk) 14:41, 16 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

  • Thank you for the message, and you have done a lot of awesome work on this site as well. Feel free to email me anytime! Best of luck to you as well and stay healthy and safe. Aoba47 (talk) 19:24, 16 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Peer review

[edit]

I was wondering if you could leave some comments for Dior (song) peer review? I really want the article to be FA, and would be honored to get feedback from a great editor with experience. The Ultimate Boss (talk) 02:28, 11 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Cups

[edit]

I was wondering if you could leave some comments for the Cups (song) peer review? I really want that article to become FA because it has a very special place in my life. Also, your comments for Dior are very helpful. I’ll be sure to implement all of them over the next few days. The Ultimate Boss (talk) 10:29, 18 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

  • I will have to say no to this. I am honestly a little confused by this as you have a completely different song article at peer review and yet another one as a FAC. I would instead recommend focusing on just one of these things so that way reviewers would know which one to focus on. Aoba47 (talk) 14:55, 19 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Are you back?

[edit]

I was sad when I saw your decision to step away from Wikipedia last month but certainly respectful of the reasons why. But I see that message is gone and so now I can't help but ask. Best, Barkeep49 (talk) 19:24, 12 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

  • @Barkeep49: Thank you for the message. I did decide to return to Wikipedia after taking a break as I still came on and edited anyway and with that (admittedly brief) time away, I was able to better reflect on my concerns with time management, etc. I have decided to come back to Wikipedia to focus on what I enjoy about the site and to not over-exert myself with trying to do everything. Aoba47 (talk) 19:34, 12 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Well that's great news. I'm happy to read that. So I have to tell you that main reason I was looking around these parts is that no fewer than three different editors approached me in December and January saying that I should look at you for RfA. That's a lot of people, which is always one of my main principles about whether or not someone would pass RfA. Having done my own deep dive, were it not for the retirement I would have been sending you my "Hey have you thought about this, because I think you should run" email a little bit ago.
So now that you're back I want to plant that seed. If you're not interested, fair enough but I think you should be, even if you're just doing the stuff that you want. A misconception I've learned people have is that being an admin means you have to do stuff. Not true. You just have the opportunity to press buttons, if you want. So if you're not interested I am going to plant the seed since maybe you'll change your mind down the road. If you're interested we'd want to wait a couple months anyway to assuage concerns about the retirement but send me an email and we can discuss this further. Best, Barkeep49 (talk) 19:43, 12 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • @Barkeep49: Thank you again for the message. That is a lot of people. I am grateful and flattered people would think of me in that way. I will definitely think about it and read more on adminships in general. With that being said, I would like to wait at least a year before making any decisions in that area given my recent retirement and return. Over the past year, I've gone back and forth with Wikipedia so right now, it would be probably be better to be more consistent here. I hope that makes sense. I hope you are doing well and staying safe. Have a great weekend! Aoba47 (talk) 01:54, 13 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Yay, welcome back! ---Another Believer (Talk) 17:12, 26 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome back

[edit]

Welcome back to the site, Aoba. I know it is very hard to completely cut ties with Wikipedia lol... Either way, I hope you're back with the same enthusiasm and civility as always. Cheers, (talk) 11:30, 19 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

A barnstar for you!

The Special Barnstar
Thanks so much for your help in improving "Dior". It's such an honor getting help from such an experienced editor. And by the way, welcome back! It's good to see that you took a well-deserved break from all your hard work here! The Ultimate Boss (talk) 05:47, 21 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I want to apologize for this situation. It was misdirected anger from a personal life situation on my part. You were (still are) always civil and professional in your interactions here. I have been going over some of your Title era GA reviews recently, and not only is the quality unmatched but you were also more polite and patient than I deserved. You may have forgotten about this altogether, but I still wanted to get it off my chest. Thank you for all your help and hard work.--NØ 15:36, 23 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

  • Thank you for the message. I appreciate the apology, but I would not worry about it. I have acted poorly on Wikipedia in the past after misdirecting emotions from my personal life so I can relate to that a lot actually. Best of luck with all of your editing! Aoba47 (talk) 20:09, 23 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

What's up?

[edit]

So you are editing regularly now? Right now, I'm aiming Danganronpa 3: The End of Hope's Peak High School to become a GA. It kinda has the same staff members from Akudama Drive but it the whole atmosphere seems based on the horror movie Saw rather than the action movies Akudama Drive reference. Happy editing.Tintor2 (talk) 15:55, 23 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

  • Thank you for the message. I have heard a lot of positive things about the Danganronpa series, but I have never played or watched anything related to it. While I love some types of horror movies, I never got the appeal of torture porn, like Saw and other films. It is just not something for me. Anyway, best of luck with all of your editing! Aoba47 (talk) 20:07, 23 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
To be more specific the first game was influenced by a novel known Battle Royale. The End of Hope's Peak seems more like Saw considering how they made it darker than every game. There is comedy but it's completely black. If you check the development sections of the games you'll see how the writer's scripts had to be revised since the company didn't not find it fitting to a sensitive audience to the point they made the blood pink.Tintor2 (talk) 23:21, 23 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
That makes sense to me. Battle Royale was and still is a huge influence on pop culture so that is no surprise to me. I understand the appeal of Saw, particularly the originals where there seemed to be a much clearer message/commentary at play, but I prefer to watch different types of horror movies than that. I'm also not surprised that Saw would have some impact on a game like this though since it had a large and undeniable impact on horror and pop culture as a whole. I just prefer a slower, more eerie type of horror, like Rosemary's Baby even though Roman Polanski is an incredibly awful person. Aoba47 (talk) 00:05, 24 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Dior

[edit]

Does Dior look ready for FAC yet? The Ultimate Boss (talk) 03:28, 28 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

  • @The Ultimate Boss: I still do not think the prose is up to the FA level, particularly in the "Background and release" and "Music and lyrics" sections, but with that being said, I will be ending my involvement with the article here. I wish you the best of luck with editing the article further and the FAC whenever that happens. I would highly encourage you to reach out to editors familiar with music articles and editors who regularly participate in the FAC process. But, to be completely transparent, I will not be contributing to the peer review any further and will likely not participate in a future FAC. Aoba47 (talk) 04:02, 28 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I have closed the peer review. I have now given up on trying to take articles to FAC. I really do appreciate your help on the peer review, but no matter what I do, it still seems like the prose for every article I nominate is very bad. The Ultimate Boss (talk) 05:00, 28 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hey bro. I know we aren’t probably on good terms but I want to thank you for everything you done to help me with throughout my time on Wikipedia. I really do appreciate it and hope you are doing well during these difficult times. 💫💫💫 The Ultimate Boss (talk) 09:27, 21 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

That’s good to hear. I was wondering if you could leave some comments for the "Cups (song)"? The nomination is dedicated to my love on who passed away from covid. I really want this article to be FA before I graduate high school in June and head to college. And remember to shoot for the stars and aim for the moon. The Ultimate Boss (talk) 03:15, 22 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • I am sorry to hear about your friend. COVID still feels very surreal to me even though it has been over a year now. I think dedicating your work an article to them is a nice and healthy way of handling it. Unfortunately, I will be unable to review the "Cups" FAC right now as I am having issues with my primary laptop. A few of the keys are not working anymore so I have to figure out whether or not it would be more cost effective to replace the keyboard or just get a new laptop altogether and that is honestly giving me some major anxiety right now. I am sorry for not being able to help right now, but if the nomination is still up once I get everything sorted, I will look through it. Best of luck with your last few months of high school! My FAC

[edit]

Hey Aoba, how's everything going! Are you planning on posting at the "All About That Bass" FAC? As I indicated in my edit summary at the peer review page, I believed all your comments had been addressed, which is why I bravely proceeded with the nomination, lol. I apologize if that isn't the case.--NØ 06:06, 1 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

  • @MaranoFan: Everything is going well. I will post a review on your FAC soon. I'm still having issues with my laptop and it is currently out for repair. I am using one of my older laptops and it is much harder for me to edit on it so that is why I have not posted a review yet. Hopefully, the issue will be resolved by next week. Best of luck with the nomination. Aoba47 (talk) 19:26, 1 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Glad to hear you’re doing well, and there is absolutely no hurry. My FAC panic is just always at its peak after all those failed nominations lol. Thank you for the well wishes :)—NØ 19:31, 1 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • No worries. I look forward to reading through the article again in the near future. I have definitely been there in terms of FAC panic. I would say things are already looking good for the FAC as it has already received a support, and I am sure I will support it as well after my review (if I find anything additional to bring up there). Aoba47 (talk) 21:35, 1 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Help

[edit]

I'm not asking you to comment on anything for FAC or that. I just want your opinion on Shoot for the Stars, Aim for the Moon. How does it look in your opinion? I want some expert music editors to see how it looks like. The Ultimate Boss (talk) 23:53, 7 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Extending my gratitude

[edit]

Hi Aoba47,
I hope you are doing well. I came on your page because I just wanted to say, "Thank you." You have no idea who I am and we have never met before, but I really just wanted to stop by and sincerely extend all of my appreciation for your endless contributions to this site. Though I'll be going on two years on Wikipedia soon, I still consider myself a very novice Wikipedian, not quite knowing where my place is with regards to how and what I can edit well, but I continue to read and explore, just like anyone of us. After endlessly perusing through so many corners of this site, I found my way to the FAC page earlier last year, where I stumbled upon one of your articles and was immediately hooked. I not only found your writing compelling but I also deeply valued the range of modern-day topics you covered, which I feel has been very unappreciated or underrepresented, and honestly, sometimes even ridiculed both on here and in broader American society. So after finding out in January of this year that you were considering retiring, I kept quietly hoping you would reconsider as I knew that your contributions, both in writing your own articles and in editing others' works, would be dearly missed. Take your knack for finding resources about rather obscure topics, for example -- it's not easy to dig through the archives, but you find what you need anyways and have really broadened the scope of coverage on various topics. It's just another level of hard work that I really appreciate so much from experienced editors like you.

But, I also understand how being prolific on this site can truly be a double-edged sword; simply put, bringing articles into the shape that you do on regular occasion must certainly be very exhausting. So I completely empathized with you and the reasons you laid out as to why you were retiring. Basically, in a sense, this message is about three months late, as I'd been really shy about sharing my gratitude with you and am still just shy overall about approaching other editors regarding advice or mentorship. I consider myself very lucky that you have somewhat "re-emerged", if you will, to share your valuable time with us on Wikipedia and I'm thrilled to be able to enjoy your work again. I've just decided to share this with you now before it might be too late again lol. Anyways, I just want to reiterate how much I enjoy the work you put in to whichever topic you share with all of us. Wikipedia can be very a thankless project, but I hope you know that you have certainly helped shape my experience on Wikipedia for the better. Thank you for all that you do! Tunestoons (talk) 06:48, 4 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

  • @Tunestoons: Thank you for the very sweet message. I do not think I will ever be anywhere near as active on here as I used to be, but I am happy that I am working toward a better balance of everything. I always have fun working on more obscure subjects as I think that is one of the important aspects of this site so I am very happy to get positive feedback about it. You have made me day and it makes me feel better about my Wikipedia work in general. I hope you are doing well and staying safe out there. Have a wonderful rest of your week! Aoba47 (talk) 21:02, 4 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

TFA

[edit]

Thank you today for Mother's Day (Rugrats), about "the Mother’s Day special from the animated television series Rugrats, which aired on May 6, 1997. In the episode, it revolves around the holiday from the Rugrats' perspective. It is revealed that Chuckie Finster’s mother had died of a terminal illness shortly after his birth. The production history was relatively recently brought up through a 2016 interview with the series co-creator Paul Germain. According to Germain, Chuckie’s mother was originally absent from the first season to avoid the work required to animate a new character. When the character’s absence became more noticeable as the series progressed, Germain and fellow co-creator Arlene Klasky developed pitches for storylines on the mother’s death or her divorce from Chuckie’s father Chaz. While Nickelodeon executives rejected their idea as too dark and mature for the audience, the idea was eventually developed into an episode. “Mother’s Day” received a positive reception for the treatment of the subject matter, especially from retrospective reviews. Media commentators also highlighted the positive representation of breastfeeding in the episode and Chuckie’s perception of his father as the perfect mother."! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 19:20, 9 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Re

[edit]

Hey, I apologize for not replying to you sooner. I just logged in after a few days of mini-break... Either way, I regret to say I would not be able to have any discussions or talks, as I am now near-retired (I've been waiting for the Taylor Swift FAC to come to an end, but that is such a pain in the neck). Best, (talk) 01:46, 10 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

  • No need to apologize. I am sorry that your FAC is being a pain. I am sure it will work out in the end as you are a very good editor on here. Best of luck with everything in the future. I ultimately decided to not really think about an AFD for that particular article as it is not a process I would particularly enjoy and I'd rather limit my Wikipedia time to activities that I genuinely enjoy doing. I will be sad to see you go and I hope that I can continue hearing you from you in the future. Aoba47 (talk) 02:24, 10 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
