1960s single stub

Haha! I hadn't noticed that the message was messed up before. Good eye. Just a tip that, in the future, when you see something in brackets like that, it's a template. To edit it, type "template:templatename" in the search box, then hit "Go" and you'll be brought to an editable page for the template. I went ahead and fixed the one you pointed out. GassyGuy (contribs) 07:57, 26 October 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for the note about fixing templates, GassyGuy. I knew it was a template, of course, but I had no idea how easy it was to get inside one. Athaenara 08:06, 26 October 2006 (UTC)

Project Insight

Hope this is what you wanted. If you need to tweak this some more, or if you want to upload other pictures, I'll be glad to help. Thanks for just now! --Rifleman 82 21:42, 10 November 2006 (UTC)

It's terrific, Rifleman, thank you! Athaenara 21:53, 10 November 2006 (UTC)

You're a genius?

(... a reminder that I don't seem like a genius. —A.)

I hope this doesn't offend you, but you didn't seem like a genius. And you don't edit anything particularly brilliant, but rather, your edits seem to be just simple fixes here and there. How about completing the table of logic symbols? That's something I actually wrote on the article's talk page that I was going to do, but never did. Or how about "dumbing down," the articles on advanced mathematics and physics, so that, for example, the average reader can understand what the hell this means? At least maybe you can help me correct the article on Classical Liberalism. Robocracy 07:09, 17 November 2006 (UTC) aka HP_Owner in the IRC

No, I really cannot imagine why Mensa let me in. Given your low estimation of my intelligence, you won't be disappointed that I decline your offer of an assortment of ambitions in which you've lost interest. — Athaenara 14:00, 18 November 2006 (UTC)

On Aggression

I think you made the article On Aggression more encyclopedic, but I don't agree that my reference didn't support the claim (regardless of how encyclopedic the article was on the whole with it). Alas, my reference to page 94 fell out when I made the reference work, so perhaps you thought I meant the whole book. I'd be glad to hear your opinion on that. (–Uncas)

Wikipedia:Avoid weasel words#Examples is excellent reading.
 • Specifically in regard to: "Many ideas are now believed to be false, such as [this] and [that] ... ".
The reference's link trail does not lead to verification of the claim.
 • To check this most easily: go into the article's history, find an earlier version which still includes the reference (this one, for example), and follow the succession of links as if you had not written it yourself but were another reader, seeing it for the first time, seeking the support implied by the ref tag.
 • The De Waal article does not mention Lorenz. The article about his book is a one-line stub.
In any event, what was said on "page 94"? And, whatever it was, does it not more properly belong in the De Waal article? Lorenz was not a primatologist. Most of his studies in ethology were of birds, which are also social animals with complex social behaviors.

By the way, how come you "cultivate a high tolerance for ambiguity" in an encyclopedia? Or is it in some other context? --Uncas 01:19, 21 November 2006 (UTC)

I find life to be full of meaningful ambiguities. I haven't time just now for a more substantive reply to the question, but I thank you for asking. Athaenara 02:28, 21 November 2006 (UTC)

(Afterthought, months later: I love both Desiderata, which is comforting, and Deteriorata, which is hilarious.)

Special Thanx

Dudette! Thanx again for all the great help you've been and for the long chat. You've help me a great deal :) I hope I can call upon you in the future for your input. Next time I'l share my Belgian truffles with you. Mystar 04:36, 22 November 2006 (UTC)

You are welcome, Mystar. Athaenara 04:41, 22 November 2006 (UTC)

Huh? Not that it isn't funny, but I'm not quite sure what you meant...Cheers, Moreschi 21:01, 10 December 2006 (UTC)

I had been wandering through a thicket of posts, on and off admin pages, after Cool Cat tried to get my support on IRC for some recent WP:POINT absurdities and stunts. I told him he and Bastique owe apologies to Moby Dick (and to a lot of other people, as I now understand it); he stalked off, after a few parting shots, in high dudgeon and/or low umbrage.
When in the midst of these wanderings I stumbled over that strange (and unrelated) unsigned post in the undergrowth I couldn't resist the urge to use the {{unsigned}} template, even though it was just an old post on a user talk page, and I felt awkward about it. Sorry I upset you! Athaenara 22:25, 10 December 2006 (UTC)
Upset me? No, not in the slightest! Cheers, Moreschi 20:05, 15 December 2006 (UTC)

Huh is right. I took a second look and corrected it 23:08, 3 January 2007 (UTC).

50 States flag PNG

Sorry about the delay. Must have missed your message. It should be possible to do a white border background for 50 States flag.PNG. I'll go through my files at home to see what state it currently is in. One challenge is that, because of the white from the flag, it wouldn't have a significant contrast with the exterior, and I'm not sure if I've still retained the original US outline in the file or not. I'll get back to you.--DaveOinSF 19:58, 2 January 2007 (UTC)

Hmm, yes. Though it's great to have a USA map which doesn't omit Alaska and Hawaii, I see the difficulty as you describe it. I should have thought it through. Thanks for getting back to me—the delay was not a problem. Athaenara 23:01, 2 January 2007 (UTC)
(Afterthought: if Alaska and Hawaii could be coloured using red and blue only, they wouldn't disappear into a white background.) Athaenara 19:20, 3 January 2007 (UTC)

Nonspecific comment intended to be hard to classify within your system

See also: User talk:Athaenara/Archive 1#Leave me a message link?

Not sure any more that a normal person can add anything to your Talk page, without first spending a week to study your archiving system :-) Anyway, I'm giving it a try. Your change here does show a fantastic attention to detail. I'd just like to throw in my two cents that it may not matter so much if archive pages get large (over 81kb), because I think no one ever goes there (I mean normal people, not like us). If you truly can't classify this comment, it's fine to delete it! EdJohnston 20:24, 27 February 2007 (UTC)

No problem. By the way, I studied the "puzzling change" you reverted. The guy found a previous version of the page in its history, added a comment, hit save -hey presto- all current discussions disappeared while previously concluded discussions returned in their earlier incarnations.

I don't think I've come across anyone on wiki that works as hard as you. You rock. Keep up the good work! I wish I could work the way you do, I'm serious. I've had a bad two days, suffered some personal attacks and stuff, and I've been thinking about quitting Wiki. I'm not going to do it. Looking at your edits was pretty inspiring. I've resolved not to let certain people get me down, and get back to fighting vandalism, something I'm pretty good at. Thanx for renewing my inspiration in Wiki. You too are being zinged by the HagermanBot when you try to maintain the COI/N page. I just visited User:HagermanBot/OptOut for the second time and got my name on the opt out list. Will see if that helps. (There is a way to turn it off for the whole COI/N page, but I think we have visitors who need the auto-signature). EdJohnston 15:26, 12 April 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for the tip. I've now done likewise. Athaenara 19:57, 12 April 2007 (UTC)

Ötzi the Iceman

Hi, I noticed that you moved the image of Ötzi the Iceman lower down in the article. Don't you think that it would be better if we had a picture at the top right hand corner of the article? Cheers, Jacklee 23:56, 27 April 2007 (UTC)

It was at the top of the article before. I think it's more effective placed at the top of "The body" section where it provides a direct visual reference to the detailed discussion of its condition as originally found and the subsequent research results. — Athaenara 00:11, 28 April 2007 (UTC)
I see your point. Would be nice if we had an illustration for the top of the article too, though. Cheers, Jacklee 01:36, 28 April 2007 (UTC)

Hello, having no idea how powerful that group in the U.S. is, I was mistaken about the group being of equal prominence, but there is an alliance of republican (anti-monarchy) groups in Australia, Britain, Canada and New Zealand called Common Cause. You'll find their pages listed here. Cheers! Jonathan David Makepeace 22:08, 27 July 2007 (UTC)

Your edit to Template:Unbalanced

(In re: edit and fix on {{Unbalanced}} template. —A.)

Re: Opt out without category

(In re: a question I asked on User talk:SineBot. —A.)

Opt out without category

I followed the instructions on {{Bots}} to protect my own pages, but the bot will still sign updates to pointers, {{userlinks}}, etc. on other pages if the category is not added to them. Why not a HagermanBot/OptOut-like page instead of an only partially usable category? — Athaenara 00:19, 23 August 2007 (UTC)

The category is only to opt out a user, and is only placed on your User: page to make the bot ignore all of your contributions. {{bots}}, however, affects everyone on that page, and it is only to be added to single talk pages as needed. If you have any other questions, please use my talk page, as the bot's is infrequently checked. --slakr (talk) 11:51, 23 August 2007 (UTC)

In re: Template talk:RFCpol list#RFC not added to list.

I share your issue with RfCs appearing. My guess is that it takes a while for the bot to pick up the request and include it. The pages currently listed took around a day to make the list. I'll let you know if that is the case by tommorrow (I made an RfC for Talk: Foundation for Defense of Democracies.) Ngchen 01:48, 9 September 2007 (UTC)

See also: Category:Wikipedia noticeboards.

The Disruptive editing noticeboard (WP:DE/N), which is was structured on the model of BLP/N and COI/N (not on the model of WP:CSN or WP:PAIN), has had the potential to become a very useful forum for reporting and addressing violations of the disruptive editing guideline.

Straight line

(The post below refers to one of four self-quotes on my user page. A.)

Well i read the defination of a straight line which is most probably a part of your own orignal research. ummhhh... so you mean to say that the adjacent points lieing on the circle with infinite radius are linear. see, if you can visualise the straight line it can never ever form a circle. the angle formed between the two adjacent point would tend to be 180 degrees but would never be equal to 180 degrees. hence the defination you gave is a bit vague. thanks, (I also used to think the same what you thought of.) Latin disciplina

Hi, just in case my browser is busted or something,... I can't tell the difference between the disciplina in these two. Was there really a ç-like character after the 'l'? I'm the one who originally wrote that sentence, so now I'm afraid that I'm inserting rot. -- Fullstop (talk) 03:00, 30 November 2007 (UTC)

It is a strange one, alright, absolutely invisible in the edit box—disciplina (cut&paste from the diff) is how it displayed—and I've never seen it before. — Athaenara 03:10, 30 November 2007 (UTC)
In case your browser can't see it here, either: it's somehow attached to the i (i) in a thin squarish font like those in early daisy wheel printers. — Athaenara 03:30, 30 November 2007 (UTC)
To me that looks like a normal disciplina. But as it turns out, its an html entity () that on my machine looks like [ì] (zoomed: ì). Because the word is in italics, the grave accent blends with the [l] and makes it virtually indistinguishable from a regular [i]. In UTF-8/unicode however, symbol #141 is a special control character with no specific displayable value, thus the strange symbol you see (but for some reason I don't).
My bad. Ah well. 'Learn something new on the 'pedia every day. :) -- Fullstop (talk) 04:24, 30 November 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for beauty and CIA

In re: Talk:Central Intelligence Agency (edit | article | history | links | watch | logs).

First, may I say that this is the most esthetically pleasing userpage I've seen on Wikipedia?

Second, It's becoming almost impossible to track what is happening in the edit wars over the CIA articles, but it appears you were putting in some stability. For that, I thank you.

It seemed wise and civil for me to touch base with everyone involved in this situation, hoping that some personal contact may calm the storming seas. I can only say that my intention, in working with original CIA articles and those that I spun off when it became impossibly large, is to improve NPOV and reliable sourcing. If I have an agenda, it is to introduce, into discussion of "CIA", that it does not always act unilaterally, but is following directions from the White House, and that it does things, such as !surprise! intelligence analysis. That agenda, unfortunately, appears to conflict with some that have a POV that the CIA is the incarnation of evil, any allegation of impropriety must be true, and to question this is "whitewashing".

Again, thanks for being bold enough to be involved in this mess. I hope we can get it back to some level of civility and valued content, perhaps with some way to link to the questionable allegations that some people want present, with perhaps less reliable sourcing. You may have noticed that the Military History project has started an Intelligence Task Force, and we are trying to improve the content of quite a few articles, not CIA alone. Unfortunately, some Wikipedia content in this area is more based on Hollywood than reality.

And yes...sometimes I believe reality is a crutch for those who cannot handle science fiction. :-)

Bugging you about bothering other people

Good evening. I don't have much experience with rapping people on their virtual knuckles as an administrator (yes, janitorial post, but our words are treated with more weight and we're definitely more responsible for them), much preferring to solve disputes with polite and usually ineffectual diplomacy, but there are times when a blunt instrument is called for. I don't have a COI, I just can't edit 'cause the page is locked. WLU (talk) 13:15, 1 April 2008 (UTC)

Yoicks, {{editprotected}} (diff) was meant, I had a feeling something was a little odd there at the time.
Thank you for prompting me to look again. — Athaenara 14:36, 1 April 2008 (UTC)
And thank you for pointing out the request edit template, I've a couple COIs that I talk to who will doubtless be very interested! Always delightful to learn something new : ) WLU (talk) 15:47, 1 April 2008 (UTC)

Unblock requests

Blocking of Oberiko

In re: my decline of an unblock request by Oberiko (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · logs · edit filter log · block user · block log).

Hi Athaenara. I would like to request that you kindly unblock Oberiko. His work on the article World War II has been ongoing for months, subject to the Military History Project and discussed in talk, having gained relatively wide consensus among the project members. This may seem like ownership, however on complex articles like this it really does require a single editor to coordinate all the input. Flying tiger had not participated in significant discussion in talk, or attempted to following 2 reverts. I can assure you the project has capable admins as part of its organisation who are well able to deal with edit conflicts and institute blocks should hey be required. rewinn's block

In re: my decline of an unblock request by Rewinn (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · logs · edit filter log · block user · block log).
See also: Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/IncidentArchive429#user vandalizing article by removing an image from it.

Please look into that block more. I have commented at the AN/I thread, and strongly feel that the 'even blocks for uneven behavior' is a poor response. It's clear from that article's talk, and the edit history, that Rewinn made far more effort than needed in dealing with CA, who had clear opposition from numerous editors for his edits. While Rewinn could've better used the WP:AN/3RR/AIV pages than he did, it's not like it's two random editors butting heads with no effort to solve an issue. Rewinn clearly made a large effort, appealing for patience, discussing at length, and so on. CA's responses are almost exclusively of the 'i'm right, you're wrong' variety, which almost always pisses off other editors. Look at the history and such, rewinn's patience is admirable, not criminal simply because it eventually wore out. Please reconsider and unblock. ThuranX (talk) 06:04, 7 June 2008 (UTC)

To both mrg3105 and ThuranX

Possibly pertinent: my entire block/unblock log. — Athaenara 21:44, 15 June 2008 (UTC)

Understood. As a matter of good practice, I watch user talk pages for a few days after I have either accepted or declined an unblock request. As you may know, a blocked user whose request to be unblocked has been declined may again request an unblock.

To keep discussions centralised, please post your detailed concerns on the blocked user's talk page where the issues are being discussed. Thank you. — Athaenara 06:26, 7 June 2008 (UTC)

That's a polite 'No, I'm right and won't reconsider. ' Understood, and good day. ThuranX (talk) 06:28, 7 June 2008 (UTC)
No, it's a polite "mine isn't the only mop on this encyclopedia and my user talk page is not the most central location for discussions of specific unblock requests" message. Please assume good faith here as well. — Athaenara 06:35, 7 June 2008 (UTC)
Your mop, your responsibility when wielding it. As for discussions, I'm not centralizing ALL unblock discussions, just those you undertook. and only ONE of those. But to get two such notes in a one minute span? Perhaps you should be reexamining. ThuranX (talk) 06:40, 7 June 2008 (UTC)
You felt a need to be snide about a declined unblock request from an editor who (1) had been blocked by another admin for only 12 hours and (2) was free to post another unblock request?
A sense of proportion, please. — Athaenara 03:29, 16 June 2008 (UTC)

User:BorgQueen and I are discussing the WP:R2D guideline, so do you consider it to be consistent with this edit of yours? More discussion is at Wikipedia:FAQ/Main Page#Please bypass this redirect. The Main Page should show our best work. Art LaPella (talk) 03:33, 10 July 2008 (UTC)

I have no strong opinion about it and would not be concerned if my edit were reverted. The FAQ page history shows that you added that section very recently (15:55, 8 July 2008 UTC).
I do not agree that your idea (22:14, 7 July 2008 UTC) is "more efficient" (03:57, 8 July 2008 UTC).
I agree with Cenarium on Wikipedia talk:Redirect#R2D on the Main Page that a change in the guideline is unnecessary: "it's a very specific case where R2D is not followed" which "is not in total contradiction with the main purpose of the guideline" (6:29, 30 April 2008 UTC). — Athaenara 05:20, 10 July 2008 (UTC)
I'm not a developer, but the simplest proposition to defend is that R2D is intended to apply to the Main Page. If there was any doubt before, the failure to add a Main Page exception to the guideline, which would have settled an oft-contentious point, should clarify the intent of R2D once and for all. But if you like, I could propose that the guideline positively state that it applies to the Main Page, and see how that goes. Art LaPella (talk) 23:40, 10 July 2008 (UTC)
"simplest proposition to defend"? I don't think so.
"oft-contentious point"? No, I don't think that's true, either.
My only recommendation: don't change any guideline or policy pages without thorough discussion on the talk pages of those guidelines and policies. — Athaenara 23:50, 10 July 2008 (UTC)

Allegheny Mountain Radio

In re: Allegheny Mountain Radio (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views).

Hello, you were the user who originally requested that WCHG, WVLS, and WVMR be merged into Allegheny Mountain Radio. Well, after much work, those stations have been merged into the Allegheny Mountain Radio article. Please take a look, tell me if you think anything needs to be added. Take Care...NeutralHomerTalk 19:18, 11 August 2008 (UTC)

It was BrokeThird3 who originally proposed merging, in December 2007. I posted my support of the idea in late March (you removed it today, I don't know why). At first glance, the article looks fine—I'll look at it more closely when I have time. — Athaenara 19:46, 11 August 2008 (UTC)
I removed it since it was merged, the request wasn't needed anymore. :) - NeutralHomerTalk 20:38, 11 August 2008 (UTC)
Again, my post was not a request: I was supporting another editor's request. — Athaenara 20:46, 11 August 2008 (UTC)
Well, either way, I figured since the pages were merged, the other users request (plus your support request) were no longer needed. - NeutralHomerTalk 21:02, 11 August 2008 (UTC)
In the Programming section, what does "on the air from 2 to 3 hours at day and sometimes a week" mean? — Athaenara 20:20, 11 August 2008 (UTC)
I wasn't sure how to word that. Some DJs broadcasts 2 to 3 hours a day only on certain days....some broadcast everyday of the week. I should go back and word that better. - NeutralHomerTalk 20:38, 11 August 2008 (UTC)
I have reworded the section in question. It still doesn't sound right to me. Perhaps you could take a crack at it. Take Care....NeutralHomerTalk 21:02, 11 August 2008 (UTC)

Notability of Royal R. Ingersoll II

Hello Athaenara! I did a little research and it turns out that no ships were named after Lt. Ingersol, only after his father and grandfather (see USS Ingersoll (DD-652) and USS Ingersoll (DD-990)). Would you now agree that the article Royal R. Ingersoll II does not indicate its notability and hence is a candidate for speedy deletion? Adrianwn (talk) 10:57, 15 August 2008 (UTC)

Hi A, I have found my way into a content / POV dispute via peer review about the British National Party article, please see here too. Do you have any thoughts / advice on how to go forward? Thanks in advance for any insight, Ruhrfisch ><>°° 03:26, 9 September 2008 (UTC)

Long time no see! I'll have a look later tonight or tomorrow. — Athaenara 04:01, 9 September 2008 (UTC)
Thanks, I suggested Third Opinion or an RfC, but the editor who got me involved does not want to go that route. Thanks, and always glad to be in touch, Ruhrfisch ><>°° 04:07, 9 September 2008 (UTC)
I thought I'd get to this sooner, sorry. When I began looking into it, I checked links to the article in Wikipedia namespace hoping to find what the two posts (1 Sept and 8 Sept) on your talk page were about.
One of the things I found was Wikipedia:Peer review/British National Party/archive1, which seems to be the remains of a process which was hijacked by one of the very strongly POV editors who do not want any independent NPOV review of an article they appear to believe they own, which is, of course, not on.
My own view is that editors who disrupt a peer review should be barred from it, and the peer review allowed to proceed, but I have zero experience with that process and don't know how such interference is usually dealt with. Am I anywhere near the right track on this? — Athaenara 22:40, 10 September 2008 (UTC)
Thanks for looking at this - I closed the peer review per Wikipedia:Peer review/Request removal policy Requests that aren't appropriate for peer review, for instance requests for help in containing vandalism, resolving an edit war, .... I do a lot at Peer Review and in retrospect agree it might have been better to keep it open, but I am trying to help out now. I also now see that there is a difference between an editor who brings an article to PR and then is opposed there, and a PR coming out of an edit war - I will also admit that in the press of so many PR requests I have not always tried to get to the bottom of an edit war that came up in PR. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 04:33, 11 September 2008 (UTC)
I am sorry to stalk this talk, but as the user who listed this for peer review, would either of you be opposed to a re-listing of this for peer review? Maybe one or both of you could play some defence and prevent the article owners from hijacking the process.--Lucy-marie (talk) 13:10, 11 September 2008 (UTC)
I would be fine with relisting it (and was the one who closed it before). Sorry about that, Ruhrfisch ><>°° 17:32, 11 September 2008 (UTC)
Do you have any comments on what wording should be used when listing this article?--Lucy-marie (talk) 18:00, 11 September 2008 (UTC)
I think the way it started before was OK, perhaps mention MOS issues too. Perhaps better to say are there POV and MOS concerns. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 03:22, 12 September 2008 (UTC)

In re: Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/British National Party election results.

I am wondering weather the following two similar articles which are related to the above discussion are candidates for deletion. In my opinion they are just lists for the sake of it, which do not assert an independent notability. ALso to my knowledge other major parties in the united kingdom do not have similar articles. the articles are British National Front election results and British National Party election results. Many thanks --Lucy-marie (talk) 18:07, 11 September 2008 (UTC)

Neither article cites any references at all. I would think there would also be BLP concerns as they list many people by name - how do we know this is accurate. Especially if there are no parallel articles, I think these are AfD ready. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 03:22, 12 September 2008 (UTC)

in re: Talk:Souliotes

The reason why I removed these comments [[2]] in the article's discussion was that they had nothing to offer in the article at all. Wiki isn't a political tool, so I believe the removal is appropriate and reasonable.Alexikoua (talk) 10:03, 20 December 2009 (UTC)

If your removal of that unsigned anon post was a better refactoring than my restoration of it, your reversion of my edit is not a problem. — Athaenara 01:00, 21 December 2009 (UTC)

For Cat's curiosity

Sorry for asking, but since you are the first lady WP:Admin happened to meet [here] and I took a sock from your nr. of edits, and your name seems Greek ( me"). May I ask: Are you Greek? (nothing to make you sceptical about it, you will hear nothing more of me -hopefully- just for cat's curiosity). --Factuarius (talk) 07:59, 22 December 2009 (UTC)

I invented the username, which seems to have come from an affection for the compound vowel ae/æ (ash), associations with Athena's owl (a meaningful symbol in Mensa), playing with syllables in a casual way, and liking the sound. I'm Anglo. — Athaenara 20:02, 22 December 2009 (UTC)
Thanks for your answer Athaenara. Just to know, in Greek your name is the superlative of the female name Athena, commonly used to friendlily address to someone when you purposely want to overestimate her just for showing your (friendly) respect to her. Have a magic new year, keeping up the (elf's) good work and (if I may) stay away from dark WP:exorcists, the opposite of your kind and noble race. Cheers, --Factuarius (talk) 17:50, 29 December 2009 (UTC)
Wow, that's interesting—I had no idea. How would it be spelled in Greek? A fine 2010 to you as well! (WP:excorcists?) — Athaenara 21:09, 29 December 2009 (UTC)

"Αθηνάρα", "ΑΘΗΝΑΡΑ" from the female name Αthenά. It is also in use from the funs of the city of Athens for the same purpose in their (unfavourable) comparison to other cities. Generally the -ara is a somewhat boyly or tomboy expression always used to sweetly superlativate something loved that makes you feel proud (friend, sport teams, etc), usually used as a moral reward for his/her character or for a feat. WP:exorcists: just a joking expression for admins using their privileges in a rather Draconic way, much the same way as the medieval exorcists used to use their privileges. See for example the nr. of users blocked by a typical WP:exorcist [3] and that of a typical good elf [4] after spending the same time (and same edits) in WP. Which is the reason the greek version of your name seems so much fitting to me :-) --Factuarius (talk) 01:57, 30 December 2009 (UTC)

Thank you very much. — Athaenara 05:40, 30 December 2009 (UTC)

Quick Archiving

in re: Talk:Monty Hall problem

At the Monty Hall problem, we're used to having our discussions around for months. Your latest archiving included diffs from December, 2009. Too soon, in my opinion. Glkanter (talk) 03:27, 23 December 2009 (UTC)

I reversed that (diff). Note: from Wikipedia:Talk page guidelines#When pages get too long:

Older browsers can accommodate only 32KB in edit boxes, so anything larger can be too long for those who use them. Otherwise, a guideline to consider a page as long is when it exceeds 50 topics.

When I first saw it in Wikipedia:Database reports/Long pages, MHp talk was over 1000 KB [see 16:35, 18 December 2009 (UTC) in the page history], more than an order of magnitude larger than many other "long" pages. It's now approximately 530 KB. — Athaenara 04:36, 23 December 2009 (UTC)

Thank you. I add such links because an old issue will sometimes re-arise weeks, months, or years later, looking familiar but causing me to wonder what the heck it was about. The links help abbreviate the time I spend wondering, particularly in talk archives. — Athaenara 07:28, 16 January 2010 (UTC)

see also: Talk:Archaeoastronomy and Talk:Archaeoastronomy/Archive 2 page histories

I noticed you recently archived Talk:Archaeoastronomy, for which thanks. I do have problems, however, with your removal of all the past discussion. The default for MiszaBot, which I've used occasionally, is to leave the last 2 topics on the page, no matter how old they are. That seems better than leaving the appearance of a naked talk page. --SteveMcCluskey (talk) 23:38, 3 February 2010 (UTC)

Hmm, that's an unusual complaint. Should the inactive "ethnoastronomy" (18 September–6 October 2009) and "Don't forget-- astronomy is hard science" (28 October–3 November 2009) discussions be returned to the active talk page from Talk:Archaeoastronomy/Archive 2? — Athaenara 23:53, 3 February 2010 (UTC)
I'd say yes. A principal reason for talk pages is to inform new editors of issues that have already been discussed and resolved concerning the article. The principle reason for archiving is when the talk page gets too long to be read conveniently. The talk page guideline suggests 50 topics (which seems a lot) or 32 KB (which seems inconsistently small, since many discussions get into the 10s of KB). --SteveMcCluskey (talk) 03:04, 4 February 2010 (UTC)

Template:Reflist#Columns says that {{reflist|2}} will do that (with {{reflist|3}} for three). Please help revert article

In the article Trial and conviction of Arne Treholt, I have made a mistake. My version at 14.30 PM today, is correct. The later version of mine, is not correctly formatted. Can someone please help, and revert to version of 14.30 PM? --BustingInflatedEgos (talk) 14:58, 25 August 2011 (UTC)

Sorry, I should have read as far down as the "I am a sockpuppet of" template rather than the cursory check I gave it. – Athaenara 09:19, 4 September 2011 (UTC)

Ronald William Turner

in re: Ronald William Turner (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views)

If you are a super-alert person, the subject line should tip you off as to my problem with this article.

In the process of posting this hero's biography, I came to the embarrassing realization that sometime in the research/writing process, I changed him into William Ronald Turner. Because I will have to revisit the entirety of my research to weed any insertions of the wrong Turner, with resultant rewriting, I withdrew the article with the aim of reposting it when it has undergone massive correction. What will I have to do to repost it after correction?

If you're working on it in your userspace, you can move the page to the proper article title when it's ready for mainspace. – Athaenara 21:59, 27 September 2011 (UTC)

misleading photo

i was watching the manuel zelaya article, when i saw the image of the people that protested against him i notices that it had some incongruence, the image file name is ( im new in this wiki editing stuff but i noticed you edited that article or image... see it for yourself the image is tricked, some people look to small and others to big, its kind of superpositioning of images... the image porpouse is to mislead public opinion concerning the 2009 coup, i think it should be removed-- (talk) 09:03, 10 May 2012 (UTC)
