Coniston Old Man

Hello. I stumbled on to an error on this page while I was working on my own project to map the most prominent fells in England. I have no interest in starting wikipedia articles or anything like that but when I saw something in this article being presented as a fact when it is simply wrong I decided I would correct it. The Old Man of Coniston is not the seventh most prominent mountain in England like the article asserts, it is the twelfth. A list can be found at [1] if you are interested and the same information can be found in wikipedias own lists of marylins. I don't know how to put a citation into the article but I don't really think this is needed here. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 81.145.242.35 (talk) 20:54, 26 January 2008 (UTC)

Cheers for that, it is one of my favourite fells and I just wanted the information to be correct. By the way, all that stuff about vandalism on the talk page you sent me a message on is nothing to do with me. That was my first ever edit but it seems I share my IP address with a moron. Anyway thanks once again.--81.145.242.35 (talk) 22:59, 26 January 2008 (UTC)C

No worries! It certainly isn't something that comes up very often! AirdishStraus (talk) 20:43, 21 February 2008 (UTC)

Apologies over my edit with the caps issue at the start of the sentence; I had been misinformed. On speaking to a colleague in Germany it appears that it should be capitalised at the start of a sentence, but that Werra is probably better used than Von Werra in these circumstances. External links

Hi Bevo74. Thanks for leaving a message. I am happy to start a talk article as suggested.

Before I do, I need to know on what I may have an issue with and would be grateful if you can advise. I have read the guidelines for external links, and contrary to some of the existing ones already there, my contribution does not contain advertising or any means of raising revenue from the public resource it is. What I hope it is useful, tasteful, informative, factual. It is also unique. Looking at the existing links there I can say it is not a blog/commentary on what people are already discussing or in news in various other sites and forums elsewhere.

Yes I guess I was somewhat surprised to learn the link I contributed contravened the guidelines for external links, but at the same time perfectly satisfied that these things need to be challenged and checked on an informative resource such as this site. As you were the one to raise issue please advise the points I need to be aware is at the issue here, and if I can not resolve, I will be happy to discuss with the wider audience as suggested.

Thanks in advance Darkmavis (talk) 15:17, 17 August 2008 (UTC)

CML Premier template

Yes, I deleted it as uncontroversial - having a template with three links on it (the only three clubs still with articles) is fairly pointless, and only leads to the temptation for new editors who don't know better to try and fill in the 15 or so blanks. If you still think it's relevant, bring it up on the WP:FOOTY page, and if other editors agree with you, I'll restore it - I would restore it, but I really can't see it being kept at a TfD and what with all the pointless AfDs floating around at the moment, I'd rather not waste people's time... пﮟოьεԻ 57 17:22, 31 August 2008 (UTC)

Oxford Wikimania 2010 and Wikimedia UK v2.0 Notice

Hi,

As a regularly contributing UK Wikipedian, we were wondering if you wanted to contribute to the Oxford bid to host the 2010 Wikimania conference. Please see here for details of how to get involved, we need all the help we can get if we are to put in a compelling bid.

We are also in the process of forming a new UK Wikimedia chapter to replace the soon to be folded old one. If you are interested in helping shape our plans, showing your support or becoming a future member or board member, please head over to the Wikimedia UK v2.0 page and let us know. We plan on holding an election in the next month to find the initial board, who will oversee the process of founding the company and accepting membership applications. They will then call an AGM to formally elect a new board who after obtaining charitable status will start the fund raising, promotion and active support for the UK Wikimedian community for which the chapter is being founded.

You may also wish to attend the next London meet-up at which both of these issues will be discussed. If you can't attend this meetup, you may want to watch Wikipedia:Meetup, for updates on future meets.

We look forward to hearing from you soon, and we send our apologies for this automated intrusion onto your talk page!

Notability of Santos F.C. (England)

Ambox warning pn.svg

A tag has been placed on Santos F.C. (England) requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done because the article, which appears to be about a real person, organization (band, club, company, etc.), or web content, does not indicate how or why the subject is notable: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not indicate the subject's importance or significance may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable. If this is the first page that you have created, then you should read the guide to writing your first article.

If you think that you can assert the notability of the subject, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the article (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the article's talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would confirm the subject's notability under Wikipedia guidelines.

For guidelines on specific types of articles, you may want to check out our criteria for biographies, for web sites, for bands, or for companies. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this. Jasynnash2 (talk) 12:52, 16 September 2008 (UTC)

Alliance

Hi, I've recently proposed that WikiProjects Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshireform an alliance. Basically we will share advice and information in a constructive way, I like to call it constructive collaboration. As you are probably aware our WikiProjects are relatively small and in the case of mine, are still trying to rate an overwhelming number of articles. This alliance idea can be very beneficial of us and I believe is the first in WikiPedia. We don't haveto do too much (I'm sure you're very busy) but ot can be helpful for both. Unfortunatly WP Derbyshire have pretty much decided not to participate but my WP (Lincolnshire) is very happy, we also have the support of WP England. Finally, just in case you are wondering why I am contacting you directly, it's because I ahven't had a reply on the WP Notts talkpage yet. 95jb14 (talk) 14:41, 14 June 2009 (UTC), member of WikiProject Lincolnshire

Hi, thanks for pointing out the difference on Mick Farmer. Rollback

Please do not use rollback for reverting anything other than vandalism. I noticed your recent reverts here; the IP's edits were not exactly blatant, but instead against an MOS standard (and thus warrants an explanation or two in your edit summaries). Thank you, JamieS93 20:15, 14 October 2009 (UTC)

The reverts were already discussed here, but ignored by the IP and similar also ignored here. If an editor does not have the courtesy to discuss or provide an edit summary about a repeated change to me it looks like vandalism Bevo74 (talk) 20:45, 14 October 2009 (UTC)

Yeah, I've seen that discussion. I get where you're coming from, since the IP is indeed being disruptive by repeatedly editing outside the norms, giving no rationale (or possibly doesn't know where to post a comment) - it's just that WP:ROLL makes it very clear that rollback should be used for obvious cases only, reverts that don't need a reasoning behind them. Three reverts in a row without explanation is kind of risky. Another admin might have a stronger opinion, more or less (I don't think rollback is such a magic tool, but instead the lack of an edit summary explanation) - I'm just saying that you probably ought to be a bit more careful, okay? I'm going with the norms of how rollback should be used. Cheers, JamieS93 21:58, 14 October 2009 (UTC)
Okay, I'll take the advice and be a bit more careful. It's not like I'm bothered about Taiwan/Chinese Tapei/Republic of China Bevo74 (talk) 16:49, 18 October 2009 (UTC)

User talk:99.236.125.59 reversions

Hi, Bevo74. I noticed the recent back-and-forth reversions with the anonymous IP editor 99.236.125.59 (talk · contribs). I'm not sure if this is actual Wikipedia policy or just the opinion of some editors', but I recall reading that it's generally okay for a vandal to remove warnings from their own pages; it's assumed that if they removed it, they read it. Sorry if I'm butting in; I just thought I might be able to save you some grief. Please let me know if I'm off-base here. Cheers! -- Bgpaulus (talk) 17:42, 14 July 2010 (UTC)

Replied Bevo74 (talk) 17:46, 14 July 2010 (UTC)
Oh, I absolutely agree. I find it frustrating sometimes when I drop a level 1 warning onto someone's talk page (because it appeared to be their first transgression and, therefore, I'm [[WP:AGF|assuming good faith), only to find out that they'd already received at least one of those and it's time to escalate. The trouble is that one could go back and forth with them like that for quite a while, undo-ing each other, so immediately after warning (at whatever level) someone, I just check their contributions and make sure that the message I left was appropriate. If it wasn't, then I just amend it. Anyway, that's just my opinion; I'm not saying you're doing anything wrong and I certainly hope I didn't come across as some sort of know-it-all. Thanks for all your help with the keeping the vandals at bay! -- Bgpaulus (talk) 17:59, 14 July 2010 (UTC)

Well, as I think about it more, it doesn't sound particularly encyclopedic. It sounds more like something a narrator would say on a film track, for a touch of drama. It's a cliche for sure, the question would be whether anything needs to be said in its place. Or maybe "such-and-such IS..." (as opposed to WAS) in the opening paragraph is sufficient to convey that something is active "to this day", hence rendering it not only unencyclopedic but also redundant? ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 16:00, 20 August 2010 (UTC)

Response

He Bevo,

Bolding - there is no rule stating that important information such as previous names of football clubs cannot be in bold - in fact it is common practice throughout a lot of club articles (that have nothing to do with me) to bold former names - maybe to show the user in an obvious way that they have arrived at the correct page - i.e. when they arrive at Oldham Boro's page - they can instantly see they used to be Oldham Town. Regardless - take it up in a proper discussion - you do not own these pages - who's to say you are right over me. Neither of us is correct over the other - is the bolding really hurting you so much that you just cannot bear it to be there.

F.C. - In most cases I am only reverting edits where people have added F.C. to the infobox title recently - a consensus was never reached on this subject despite the best efforts of all involved and it was stated that they would remain as they were at the time of the discussion's end. So if you look at the hsitory of Syoke City, Hucknall Town etc. you'll find the F.C. has been added by other users since. So not me being the pest - I'm completely within my rights to revert these edits

On the subject of AFC Kemspton Rovers - I reverted it as there is no concrete evidence that the AFC stands for nothing (unless you can prove otherwise - maybe you can and i'll accept that). The fact it says AFC without dots on their website means nothing - Lots of clubs say "Club Name FC" i.e. they have no dots like Salisbury City's website but i can assure you the FC definately stands for Football Club thus their page name on wiki is Salisbury City F.C.

Many thanks MorrisSar (talk) 15:52, 11 October 2010 (UTC)

Looks like my refound good faith is being stretched Bevo74 (talk) 05:49, 12 October 2010 (UTC)
Bevo - maybe you could look at the edit histories of Tokyngton Manor F.C.*, Hyde F.C., University of Exeter A.F.C.*, Hucknall Town F.C., Little Common F.C.*, Bootle F.C., Alsager Town F.C. - I could go on and on with another 100 cases (as I've added about double that amount of infoboxes that have been changed by dudesleeper over and over again!) But i really have better things to do than sit here and explain myself over something so stupid - I want to make club articles standard (my reason for changing Stoke City's page to match the other 19 Prem articles), I want to update league constitutions (of which I have done 90% of the 2010-11 lineups for leagues with a wiki page) and much more without this hassle

Oh and please do look at who added the F.C. to Lancaster City's article in Oct 2009 - classic - this article originally omitted this - A 'certain user' then sneakily changed this, I change it back, then he decides to twist things when commenting on his reversion back to his edit that my edit in May was sneeky - but of course his edit wasn;t sneaky in the slightest was it! Oh no.....Dudesleeper can do no wrong - I'm the big bad F.C. remover!

All these have been repetatively changed (mainly by the user above who you seem quite happy to jump into bed with after one side of the argument) against any agreed consensus!

  • = I created the damn infobox in the first place without F.C. and dudesleeper has been adding it.

The examples above are just recent edit wars that Dudesleeper has been engaging in - I say him and not me as he is the one chaging it from the original.

I cannot believe we're having this discussion again - No one is right and all edits are 'legal' - I don't go running to 'mummy' everytime Dudesleeper adds an F.C. to an infobox header - I just choose to revert it or ignore it - but if I remove it you know who will start trying to cause waves and blacken my name in the public domain - like a recent post of Project wiki-football. I'm not annoyed at you and most of this is not aimed at you - you raised valid points about AFC and bolding which i was happy to discuss in an adult manor with you but if you raise F.C./infobox headers with me and start conspiring with Dudesleeper then I will not be so reasonable - and I think you can see why from my examples above!

Kind regards MorrisSar (talk) 08:28, 12 October 2010 (UTC)

I spoke to Dudesleeper as I knew he had an interest if I had noticed people on your page supporting you, I would have mentioned it to them. After you replied I decided to undo my post on his page as I was happy with your reply Certainly no conspiracy going on, I don't have the brains for that and besides I can't say Blackpool F.C. made last season a worthwhile for me! The Beatles

Long-standing consensus states that the band which identifies itself to be The Beatles be referred to as "The Beatles" which is a registered trade mark of Apple Corps Ltd. The long standing discussion is at [4]. Steelbeard1 (talk) 21:48, 17 October 2010 (UTC)

Thank you for correcting my mistake on Ramshaw's article. This is what we get for trusting info on this site, eh? If you have the info available to correct the infobox and the rest of the article, please don't forget to make those changes. Cheers. – PeeJay 23:02, 30 April 2011 (UTC)

Routine reversal of a vandalism spree by a new, anonymous ip results in me receiving personal abuse

As a "user who knows the difference between the United Kingdom and England" I note that you too were reverting a routine vandalism spree by an ip adress this morning (probably a sockpuppet of an experienced user). I was amazed to find that my routine removal of vandalism resulted in me receiving unpleasant threats and rude Edit summaries by a logged-in User. What is your opinion of these edits?

My understanding of WP:BRD is that it is the ip adress editor who made the overly bold changes without an Edit summary who must be dragged to the Talk page, not the editor removing routine vandalism. Mais oui! (talk) 19:42, 15 December 2011 (UTC)

Thanks for your kind words. It means a lot to have a stranger take a fresh look at an issue. I felt comfortable contacting you partly because I could not be accused of contacting a "chum" (eg. User:Bevo74/My thoughts on UK Nationals differs from my own view!). Mais oui! (talk) 20:52, 15 December 2011 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of Anthony Bevins

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Anthony Bevins requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a person, organization (band, club, company, etc.) or web content, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable.

If you think that the page was nominated in error, contest the nomination by clicking on the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion" in the speedy deletion tag. Doing so will take you to the talk page where you can explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. You can also visit the page's talk page directly to give your reasons, but be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but do not hesitate to add information that is consistent with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, you can contact one of these administrators to request that the administrator userfy the page or email a copy to you. ~ ⇒TomTomN00 @ 09:35, 8 April 2012 (UTC)

Hello Bevo74; this message is to inform you that there is currently a public poll to determine whether to capitalize the definite article ("the") when mentioning the band "THE BEATLES" mid-sentence. As you've previously participated either here, here, or here, your input would be appreciated. Thank you for your time. For the mediators. ~ GabeMc (talk|contribs) 22:57, 19 September 2012 (UTC)

George Alfred Spencer

Hi Bevo74. Thanks for writing the page on Spencer. I'm fascinated by the detail that 'is youngest daughter was the wife of the director of the NSPCC in the 1930s.' Do you have any more information about his daughter?

Sorry no handler, but I did some research on Spencer a couple of years ago. If you prefer I can be contacted by email at laurence.turner [at] wadh.ox.ac.uk. Cheers!

your change to Abbey Road page

Thanks for reverting back to the correct punctuation on the Abbey Road page. Though American, I'm typically aware of British spelling conventions. I did not know that a period is placed outside quotation marks in UK English, though. Your correction is appreciated and I'll keep this in mind in the future. When I posted under country for the "Canadian mayor" colour revolution, thanks for putting it in the "Other use" because i wasn't sure where that went.... Yeah, "other use" seems more appropriate thanks buddy. . — Preceding unsigned comment added by Samsamcat (talkcontribs) 22:52, 7 March 2013 (UTC) Replied at Samsamcat

Hand-coding

Hey all :).

I'm dropping you a note because you've been involved in dealing with feedback from the Article Feedback Tool. To get a better handle on the overall quality of comments now that the tool has become a more established part of the reader experience, we're undertaking a round of hand coding - basically, taking a sample of feedback and marking each piece as inappropriate, helpful, so on - and would like anyone interested in improving the tool to participate :).

You can code as many or as few pieces of feedback as you want: this page should explain how to use the system, and there is a demo here. Once you're comfortable with the task, just drop me an email at okeyes@wikimedia.org and I'll set you up with an account :).

If you'd like to chat with us about the research, or want live tutoring on the software, there will be an office hours session on Monday 17 December at 23:00 UTC in #wikimedia-officeconnect. Hope to see some of you there! Thanks, Okeyes (WMF) (talk) 23:15, 14 December 2012 (UTC)

Disambiguation link notification for February 22

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited The Beautiful South, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page The South (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Article Feedback Tool update

Hey Bevo74. I'm contacting you because you're involved in the Article Feedback Tool in some way, either as a previous newsletter recipient or as an active user of the system. As you might have heard, a user recently anonymously disabled the feedback tool on 2,000 pages. We were unable to track or prevent this due to the lack of logging feature in AFT5. We're deeply sorry for this, as we know that quite a few users found the software very useful, and were using it on their articles.

We've now re-released the software, with the addition of a logging feature and restrictions on the ability to disable. Obviously, we're not going to automatically re-enable it on each article—we don't want to create a situation where it was enabled by users who have now moved on, and feedback would sit there unattended—but if you're interested in enabling it for your articles, it's pretty simple to do. Just go to the article you want to enable it on, click the "request feedback" link in the toolbox in the sidebar, and AFT5 will be enabled for that article.

Again, we're very sorry about this issue; hopefully it'll be smooth sailing after this :). If you have any questions, just drop them at the talkpage. Thanks! Okeyes (WMF) 21:42, 1 September 2013 (UTC)

A Request to answer my question

Hello, Red Jay. I create a new page and it is in English, how can I translate it to other wiki languages, exp. German, Arabic, etc.? Does English wiki have such possibilities? The next question is that, if I want to log in in other wikis, do I need to have another username and pass word? I mean if I want to write in arabic wiki (fore example), then I need to create an account in Arabic wiki? If so, can I use the same lap top or desk top with which I have made my account in English wiki? I wish I could clarify my questions. Europe 10,000 Challenge invite

Hi. The Wikipedia:WikiProject Europe/The 10,000 Challenge has recently started, based on the UK/Ireland Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge. The idea is not to record every minor edit, but to create a momentum to motivate editors to produce good content improvements and creations and inspire people to work on more countries than they might otherwise work on. There's also the possibility of establishing smaller country or regional challenges for places like Germany, Italy, the Benelux countries, Iberian Peninsula, Romania, Slovenia etc, much like Wikipedia:The 1000 Challenge (Nordic). For this to really work we need diversity and exciting content and editors from a broad range of countries regularly contributing. If you would like to see masses of articles being improved for Europe and your specialist country like Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The Africa Destubathon, sign up today and once the challenge starts a contest can be organized. This is a way we can target every country of Europe, and steadily vastly improve the encyclopedia. We need numbers to make this work so consider signing up as a participant and also sign under any country sub challenge on the page that you might contribute to! Thank you. --MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 21:09, 7 November 2016 (UTC)
