Deletion discussion about Otis Delaporte[edit]

Hello, Bigredlance,

I wanted to let you know that there's a discussion about whether Otis Delaporte should be deleted. Your comments are welcome at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Otis Delaporte .

If you're new to the process, articles for deletion is a group discussion (not a vote!) that usually lasts seven days. If you need it, there is a guide on how to contribute. Last but not least, you are highly encouraged to continue improving the article; just be sure not to remove the tag about the deletion nomination from the top.

Thanks,

Enwebb (talk) 03:32, 1 August 2018 (UTC)

Bigredlance, I am recommending you to self-revert your comment at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Otis Delaporte due to the nomination being closed. At the top of the light blue box surrounding the discussion, it says "The following discussion is an archived debate of the proposed deletion of the article below. Please do not modify it... No further edits should be made to this page." You should not have commented as the discussion is closed. Corky 02:55, 2 August 2018 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of Millard Robinson[edit]

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Millard Robinson requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a real person or group of people that does not credibly indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please read more about what is generally accepted as notable.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator. Gordon B. Frost[edit]

Bigredlance, I just created the article for Gordon B. Frost. I see you connected Template:Alfred Saxons football coach navbox to him as the coach for 1903 and 1904. Do you have a source to support that? Jweiss11 (talk) 02:02, 21 August 2018 (UTC)

Jweiss11, I will look through some of my other notes to see if I established a smoking gun connection. If I recall correctly, I established the connection more based on circumstantial evidence --
  • The obvious first link was "Gordon Frost" being the head coach at Alfred University during the 1903 and 1904 seasons, according to the school's [football record book]
  • Despite being a 1904 graduate of Dartmouth, the school's [all-time lettermen] page lists him as only having lettered in 1902.
  • Several newspapers state that he coached football at an unnamed Seattle high school in roughly 1905-1906, but his 1903-1904 football whereabouts are mysteriously missing from most publications. (The article you posted to the Gordon B. Frost states that he coached a Texas school, but it never names which one or which seasons he coached there.)
  • The 1903 and 1904 football seasons were still a part of the pre-NCAA "Wild West" era in which coaches were often "loaned" out to other schools. One notable example is Lester Larson coaching the 1907 Texas A&M Aggies football team despite still being enrolled at the University of Chicago. He had previously won a national championship as a player on the 1905 Chicago Maroons football team coached by Amos Alonzo Stagg.
  • Another example of a "loaned" coach is an "absentee coach" (sort of like Pop Warner at Iowa State in the late 1890s). This also could've been a possibility for his role at Alfred.
  • Numerous Darmouth/fraternity links state that his full name was "Gordon Bennett Frost".
  • This Find a Grave memorial shows a "Gordon Bennett Frost" who is buried in Fort Ann, New York and whose DOB seems to line up with coach Gordon B. Frost's timeline.
  • This article from a Eugene, Oregon paper in 1907 states that Frost had a summer home in Fort Ann, New York.
  • The same article states that Frost was "not a football player alone, but is a brainy man in other fields and has made success at other institutions." (with "institutions" plural)
  • Alfred University and Fort Ann are in the same state, albeit on opposite ends.
  • As you linked recently, John M. Reed is the "J. M. Reed" who coached at Alfred in 1905. (p.s. thank you for pulling the trigger on that. I searched forever for a smoking gun on that one!), so it just seems to fit the narrative that Alfred was a "stepping stone" job for other up-and-coming coaches at that time.
At any rate, it's your article, so it's your call if you want to connect these two "Gordon Frost" characters. I won't be mad either way. Haha.
Thanks for all your hard work! Bigredlance (talk) 04:31, 23 August 2018 (UTC)
This all seems likely. His name was indeed Gordon Bennett Frost per this source, which also suggests he was born in 1881. Still would be nice to have a source that explicitly ties him to Alfred, but I'll go ahead and add the Alfred stuff to the article. This isn't my article! None of these articles belong to anyone. I just want to get it right. Jweiss11 (talk) 04:46, 23 August 2018 (UTC)
Also, here's the smoking gun on Reed at Alfred: https://www.newspapers.com/clip/22997420/hartford_courant/. Jweiss11 (talk) 04:54, 23 August 2018 (UTC)
Is there any little school in upstate New York that Reed didn't coach at? Jweiss11 (talk) 05:06, 23 August 2018 (UTC)

Proposed deletion of Jim Deming[edit]

Notice

The article Jim Deming has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Coach of a small non notable college's team.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. DGG ( talk ) 08:04, 30 September 2018 (UTC)

More style stuff[edit]

Bigredlance, if the subject only played/coached one sport, it's not necessary to explicitly restate it in the coach and player sections of the infobox. Also, you should generally not repeat in the external links section resources that are cited in the body of the article. See my edit at Parks Bailey. Thanks, Jweiss11 (talk) 02:31, 5 October 2018 (UTC)

Ways to improve Joseph Forbes (American football)[edit]

Hi, I'm SshibumXZ. Bigredlance, thanks for creating Joseph Forbes (American football)!

I've just tagged the page, using our page curation tools, as having some issues to fix. Hi! Find a Grave is not a reliable source and Humboldt State University's website is a primary source. Please rectify these errors with sourcing if and when you get the time.

P. S. — You may be interested in WP:RS/P, an agglomeration of perennial sources on Wikipedia, it's a bit too US-centred for my taste, but, would more than useful for editors who are involved in the United States-related articles.

The tags can be removed by you or another editor once the issues they mention are addressed. If you have questions, you can leave a comment on my talk page. Or, for more editing help, talk to the volunteers at the Teahouse.
