Font specimens[edit]

How do you create them?--Kopiersperre (talk) 20:50, 17 June 2015 (UTC)

Hi! It's quite easy. I tend to do it simply in Microsoft Word. I use the layout of GearedBull as here (I think he has stopped editing Wikipedia mostly), but creating my own templates from coloured text boxes. (These tend to vary a bit from font to font for me unlike for him.) Then export to pdf, crop and conversion to .png. Up till now I have mostly created pictures for individual font articles but I have tried recently to create some for individual designers who have designed enough fonts to make it worth it-so for Lange, Goudy and Novarese among others. Blythwood (talk) 20:59, 17 June 2015 (UTC)
Ok, thanks for information. Sadly I'm on Linux and looking for a way to create SVG font specimens. I will try to ask GearedBull.--Kopiersperre (talk) 16:40, 4 August 2015 (UTC)
Sorry I can't help. I believe he used Quark, but I can't remember where I saw that. Blythwood (talk) 19:39, 4 August 2015 (UTC)

Joanna at DHS[edit]

Per the DHS Seal and Signature Usage Guidelines, the official typeface of DHS is Joanna MT. Also, it's even disputed in reply tweets by two other type designers in the tweet that was linked. --TUFKAAP (talk) 15:12, 7 July 2015 (UTC)

@TUFKAAP: Good catch! Added that to both pages. No question that the seal itself is Scala Bold though - while they look similar in general Joanna's P and R look quite different. Blythwood (talk) 15:25, 7 July 2015 (UTC)

Your draft article, Draft:Padbury Brook[edit]

Hello, Blythwood. It has been over six months since you last edited your WP:AFC draft article submission, entitled "Padbury Brook".

The page will shortly be deleted. If you plan on editing the page to address the issues raised when it was declined and resubmit it, simply edit the submission and remove the {{db-afc}} or {{db-g13}} code. Please note that Articles for Creation is not for indefinite hosting of material deemed unsuitable for the encyclopedia mainspace.

If your submission has already been deleted by the time you get there, and you want to retrieve it, you can request its undeletion by following the instructions at WP:REFUND/G13. An administrator will in most cases undelete the submission.

Thanks for your submission to Wikipedia, and happy editing. RichT|C|E-Mail 11:35, 23 August 2015 (UTC)

Proposed deletion of CA Immo[edit]

Ambox warning yellow.svg

The article CA Immo has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

The coverage (references, external links, etc.) does not seem sufficient to justify this article passing Wikipedia:General notability guideline and the more detailed Wikipedia:Notability (companies) requirement. If you disagree and deprod this, please explain how it meets them on the talk page in the form of "This article meets criteria A and B because..." and ping me back. Thank you,

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. WikiProject assessment tags for talk pages[edit]

Thank you for your recent articles, including Immofinanz, which I read with interest. When you create a new article, can you add the WikiProject assessment templates to the talk of that article? See the talk page of the article I mentioned for an example of what I mean. Usually it is very simple, you just add something like {{WikiProject Keyword}} to the article's talk, with keyword replaced by the associated WikiProject (ex. if it's a biography article, you would use WikiProject Biography; if it's a United States article, you would use WikiProject United States, and so on). You do not have to rate the article if you do not want to, others will do it eventually. Those templates are very useful, as they bring the articles to a WikiProject attention, and allow them to start tracking the articles through Wikipedia:Article alerts and other tools. For example, WikiProject Poland relies on such templates to generate listings such as Article Alerts, Popular Pages, Quality and Importance Matrix and the Cleanup Listing. Thanks to them, WikiProject members are more easily able to defend your work from deletion, or simply help try to improve it further. Feel free to ask me any questions if you'd like more information about using those talk page templates. Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 09:05, 16 November 2015 (UTC)

ArbCom elections are now open![edit]

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Pictures[edit]

Hi Thank you for your recent edit to the page Melvin Moss. I'm still trying to learn how to make the articles much better. I've created 40 or so articles about the biographies of many Orthodontists in the past. There are many pictures I know which are available out there but I feel that adding pictures through Wikipedia is a very tedious job. Do you have any recommendations? I'd love to add pictures to each article I've created, as I am a firm follower of Wikipedia Dentistry Project and want to create more articles on Dentistry. Thank you

@Hgcool23: Hi! Actually I was just reading the article and wanted to help so I googled Dr. Moss and found there was a picture of him already on here. I don't really know anything about dentistry. My recommendation is the main thing you want to do to make really good articles is citation - just make sure you use the 'cite' option at the top of the edit window to give sources a title, source and a refname which means you can use the same source in multiple locations. That and citing Dr. Moss's most notable papers and any textbooks he wrote in the article would be great. But I actually don't write new pages that much - try running drafts past the Teahouse project before you submit them and they can often suggest improvements. remarks on french athletic stadium article[edit]

Hi there,

Thanks for your comments on my french to english translation of a french athletic stadium

There does seem to be a lot of HTML trash around dates and numbers in the frwiki. And I'll try to remember about putting the references after the periods.

Thanks Again

Endo999 (talk) 19:55, 20 December 2015 (UTC)

@Endo999: Hey, no problem. What I did was mostly just look at the raw text and use find and replace to remove all double spaces, then find and manually remove all 'span' sections. And changed the title of the references section to just 'References' which is standard. Blythwood (talk) 20:09, 20 December 2015 (UTC)

--NorwegianBlue talk 22:45, 21 December 2015 (UTC)

@NorwegianBlue: - Oh goodness. Can we be bothered to even report this or should we just see it as their own stupid fault for not running it through a recognition system? Apparently this has been done before - look at the case of Joyce Hatto (New Yorker feature) - but seriously I can't believe the amount of work this must have taken to organise. I really hope we don't see more like this. Also, check out the latest update from this fine artiste's twitter feed: 'Happy ☺️'. Aren't we all. Blythwood (talk) 23:06, 21 December 2015 (UTC)
I've written a Facebook message to https://www.facebook.com/reese.cromwell to alert her about the situation. There doesn't appear to have been much real activity on the Facebook page however, the last pretty picture was posted in August, so she might not read it. I didn't find any obvious place on Spotify (or their web-pages) to report it, only a form to report if my copyrights had been violated. I believe the Twitter account you linked to was the same I checked an hour ago, no? Seems to have been emptied, and what happended to all the followers?... --NorwegianBlue talk 23:58, 21 December 2015 (UTC)
That's just Twitter's look on the webpage: they don't show content behind the tweet until you go to the main page. They haven't cleared out the Twitter page. (Wonder how it's operated - bot to spew out banalities mostly? They've tried hard enough to put in tweets referring to her supposed alma mater and about being 'in the studio', and they've been running it since the 5th. Hi, I made a change to the Serif article. You added a sentence containing the phrase "thick and strokes", which didn't make sense to me. Your edit of the photo does not make the picture clearer as it is now very small. On the Italian page it is a panorama but I am unsure how to set that up here. Thanks Roundtheworld (talk) 20:43, 10 January 2016 (UTC)

@Roundtheworld: - I can't remember what the policy is on this but I know it's preferred not to make a full-size image display on the English wiki as the header image for an article. See Castle Square, Warsaw and Piazza San Marco as examples of this. I think the problem is that setting a specific image size doesn't work for people viewing the article on unusual display sizes. Maybe put in another image (like the one on itwiki) as header and the large one lower down? St. Peter's Square article has a panorama and it's a good example of that - the header image is normal size. Blythwood (talk) 20:59, 10 January 2016 (UTC)

Lactopontin[edit]

Thank you very much for your attention on Lactopontin. Its great to see people working and caring! I put the stub up at the request of another collaborator who is going to be adding a bunch of content to it soon (hopefully this weekend). Per your specific question, the name is not a trade or company name, but a name that is gaining preferred use in the scientific community for the particular protein secreted in milk, derived from SPP1. The protein is currently universally confused with the systemic protein Osteopontin derived from the same gene, but with a myriad of post-translational structure and physiologic functional differences. I've spoken with some of the researchers at UC Davis and UC Illinois who have agreed to add some of their most recent work that show why this is an important distinction. 17:56, 15 January 2016 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Biotech5771 (talkcontribs)

My article on Scan-A-Line is not promotional. It is an encyclopedic article about how that type of technology works.[edit]

Blythwood:

You have flagged my article on Scan-A-Line technology for deletion because you believe it to be promotional. It is not a promotional article, but an explanation of how a fascinating technology works. However, the following article on Kleenex fits your description of a post eligible for speedy deletion because it absolutely promotes a brand: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kleenex.

Somebody doing research on non-contact measurement and guiding technology will find my article most intriguing.

Additionally, you did not state the reason for your action. You said "for several reasons" but failed to mention even one. Your decision appears to be arbitrary. If you have additional questions, please contact me, I am more than willing to answer any questions you may have.

esyN page[edit]

Dear Blythwood

I am still in the process of updating the esyN page. To support the fact that esyN is a widely used resource I have mentioned the fact that its been used by large databased like flybase and flymine and Intermine and pombase to display their data (i.e. esyN is embedded in their websites and used to display their data!) These are quite large websites and I believe this should warrant the status of notable or not ? I have added a section called embedded where I have added these details. At the moment esyN is being used by roughy 16700 unique users per month according to google analytics - how do I make a proper reference to this data ? Should I use an image from google analytics ?

Also, I know of other research groups (unrelated to me) currently submitting manuscripts that use esyN - but these articles have not been published yet..

what do you suggest ? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Favrin (talkcontribs) 15:48, 22 January 2016 (UTC)

Font samples template[edit]

Hello! Recently I found that many of font specimen, like this image, were created by you. I want to do the same job with Cyrillic glyphs, since I participate in Russian Wikipedia and Latin samples are not very useful. The design of these cards is very nice, and I wanted to ask you, does some kind of template exist? Maybe it is possible just to switch the font in it for each sample? And what kind of software do you use for it? — Euref (talk) 01:37, 9 February 2016 (UTC)

@Euref: - ah, it's horribly simple. Since I want software that I am used to and I can get easily I just use Microsoft Word, assembling together the image from text boxes. Then export to pdf and crop, then export to image. Not a great system, but I'm not a professional graphic designer and it works. I style my images on the great work of GearedBull, who is no longer using Wikipedia; he did his in Quark Xpress I believe. For the Bembo image, I actually took one of his images (of the same font but a worse digitisation of it) and slowly substituted the font samples for mine bit by bit. I'm not sure this is the best way to do it though! Blythwood (talk) 12:25, 11 February 2016 (UTC)

William Edward Fraser[edit]

Hi there. Bill Fraser is running on a never before attempted platform in a very sought after seat in Illinois's 8th congressional district. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Vote4fraser (talkcontribs) 05:46, 12 February 2016 (UTC)

@Vote4fraser: - sure, but what matters is sources, though you have added some. In addition, parts of the article read as promotional, which isn't right for Wikipedia. I would finish the article and add anything you need to quickly, as you're technically breaking the rules on usernames. Wikipedia usernames aren't allowed to sound promotional or belong to an organisation rather than a specific person, so you may get blocked quite soon automatically and asked to reregister. Blythwood (talk) 05:51, 12 February 2016 (UTC)
Blythwood I see... in what way is it promotional? Everything added to the article is fact and plays into the campaign he is running on. Vote4fraser (talk) 05:54, 12 February 2016 (UTC)
"Fraser explained that he is not keeping his salary because he wants voters to know he is doing this for the right reasons" sounds promotional. Blythwood (talk) 05:57, 12 February 2016 (UTC)
Blythwood It is straight out of both cited press releases, included in one of the cited news papers, and is included in the cited webpage from the official campaign website. It may sound promotional, but it's a large facet of the platform he is running on. Vote4fraser (talk) 06:00, 12 February 2016 (UTC)

A7 speedies[edit]

Hey, I had to decline the speedy for Race Wars story since it's a book series, as book series can't fall under A7. The series is definitely non-notable, but it's one of those tricky areas where I had to decline it based on a technicality. I've nominated it for AfD, if you want to weigh in there. Tokyogirl79 (。◕‿◕。) 08:29, 13 February 2016 (UTC)

@Tokyogirl79: - ah, sorry. Deeply creepy Turner Diaries style nonsense and I was scrambling for some response. Blythwood (talk) 08:37, 13 February 2016 (UTC)
  • No worries - no major harm done and ultimately the article really is non-notable, so it'll get deleted one way or another. We've been trying to figure out a way to write a speedy criteria for books for a while now, but there's no truly good way to go about justifying it. Tokyogirl79 (。◕‿◕。) 09:01, 13 February 2016 (UTC)

Beatrhyme communications article[edit]

Hello this is Jaron. This organization is a company that has been started by well known members of the beatbox community. They have made a name for themselfs as a company having promoted and trained some well known iconic beatboxers and vocalists. Alot of the artists in the organization are world championship beatboxers and have performed with big names such as Cee Lo Green,Doug E Fresh,Biz Markie and Reggie Watts. Some of them have even been featured on the pbs television show "the electric company". I am not a member of the organization so this is not self promotion.

Some refferences. https://www.linkedin.com/in/kid-lucky-b2791216 https://plus.google.com/110950386758071460445 http://www.bam.org/music/2014/beatrhyme-communications https://www.reverbnation.com/label/beatrhymecommunications

  • @Jaron Felix Patton: - sure, what we need is reliable sources not written by this company - all of those seem to be self-authored. WP:CORP is the guide for what a company needs to be before a Wikipedia article on it is a good idea. Blythwood (talk) 23:18, 23 February 2016 (UTC)

Anne Fuller[edit]

Hey. Thanks. Most welcome to add references. Initally all I could find was people quoting her as a gothic writer. And Yes...the quote about being a key author was from the reference given at that point but apparently I forgot to finish saying that. I'm afk but when I'm back I'll add that. 🍺 Antiqueight chat 10:02, 19 February 2016 (UTC)

  • @Antiqueight: - no problem! It's just the kind of overarching statement I realised I had to watch out for making myself when writing undergraduate essays! Incidentally, the Perils of the Night book does look quite interesting as a brief commentary on her work, if you hadn't already seen it. Baker also describes her work as modelled on Sophia Lee's The Recess which might be a good topic to go down if you were looking for a way to expand the article... Blythwood (talk) 19:26, 19 February 2016 (UTC)
You have the advantage of me there - I never had such essays - I am making this all up as I go - v. different from my forte of maths and physics and such like. Honestly, I have no idea how to expand the article other than the basic facts and a little colour where I can find it. But many people seem to have studied her work especially in relation to the development of the gothic novel and the implications of the Act of Union on gothic novels (in Ireland) in general...There was(brain not remembering) also another writer listed as someone who might have influenced her as well, another work that hers could be borrowing from. But how much to say and how much is me writing an essay on a writer I haven't read..I am more than willing to take instruction on the idea.... 🍺 Antiqueight chat 22:15, 19 February 2016 (UTC)

An Old Lady[edit]

Blythwood~

When ever I see your name, I have to think of an old lady, with white curly hair and tea... probably something to do with an American's views of stereotypical Downton Abbeyesque Britain. Very sorry about that! :-)

I just wanted to thank you very much for reviewing and adding to many of the pages I have created and other articles throughout Wikipedia; it has been greatly appreciated, probably more so than anything on a talk page could say. Thanks again, Damibaru (talk) 21:54, 19 February 2016 (UTC)

  • @Damibaru: - Ha, thanks! I'm neither that old nor that ladylike, but it's a persona I can but hope to grow into - if it's OK I've quoted your assessment on my user page. Keep up the good work! Blythwood (talk) 22:49, 5 March 2016 (UTC)

Life of girls - nomination for speedy deletion[edit]

I doubt the article will be kept, but how is Life of girls vandalism? To me it looks like a network show from one of the Slavic countries. Yes, that is entirely reasonable, and is closer to my own analysis. It think it is somebody's wishful thinking, but I wouldn't call it vandalism (people get touchy about that), I would nominate for WP:A11 as made up. I just wanting to make sure, for my own education, I wasn't missing something obvious. Thanks for the explanation! All the best, 78.26 (spin me / revolutions) 14:49, 7 March 2016 (UTC)

  • @1001Bookworm: - no worries, I know this kind of thing often happens when you're trying to build a page and you forget to take the original text out of a code snippet! Thanks for letting me know about fixing it. Blythwood (talk) 12:46, 20 March 2016 (UTC)

Thanks, Blythwood. I've done the page of Amanda K. Hale, but the sign says it's an "orphan." Could you please take a look to see what link I missed? Have a great weekend! 1001Bookworm (talk) 12:57, 20 March 2016 (UTC)

Thanks so much for your prompt response, Blythwood. You're so efficient!

Checking citations[edit]

Thank you for your feedback on the SEAW page. I've added some external links to past exhibitions. The society is also listed on the Suffolk Painters site with a description and some Youtube video demonstrations by a past member who references his membership. I wasn't quite sure where to list these - perhaps at the end? There are a few notable members (by virtue of past careers) who could also be added. Is this sufficient citation for the moment? I can keep on looking if not. I'm a wikipedia newby so any advice would be very welcome.

Thank you. JaneThomas64 (talk) 16:15, 17 March 2016 (UTC)

Review of Claudine K. Brown[edit]

Hey thank you for editing this new article! I'm impressed with many of your edits and curious about others. I've got to learn how to group references to avoid duplications, I'm guessing that's the a,b superscript thing, perhaps a ref group? Will check into it. Thank you for the added categories and citations! I'm most curious about why you put in "was an African-American museum director and...". I had actually written that exact phrase, and considered adding "female" in my draft, and looking at other biographical articles as models, decided to strike it in favor of a race- & gender- neutral description of her professional/notability credentials in the summary, and adding these attributes to categories instead. Your thoughts and work are appreciated! noranoodle (talk) 02:30, 20 March 2016 (UTC)

  • @noranoodle: - Hi! Yes, I can't remember why I thought that was a good idea. I've cut it, but kept nationality since I felt that's normal to have at the start of an article.
For de-duplicating references, when you fill in citations using the cite web tool, just type in a 'ref name' (the article title, or whatever). Save the page and you can then select it from 'named references' and insert it at the location of the cursor. (Not sure what Visual Editor does as I don't use that - this is for the old editor.) To de-duplicate references a pre-existing page and add titles to references you can run it through Refill, an automated tool, which is what I did at first. It's not quite as good as manually filling in titles but often comes close and certainly saves a lot of time. For categories I use Hotcat, which tries to autocomplete categories - that also saves a lot of time since it tries to autocomplete categories for you so lets you find the right category if you don't know exactly what it's called. Anyway, thanks for writing this. It sounds like she had an interesting career and died quite young too. Blythwood (talk) 12:58, 20 March 2016 (UTC)

Speedy deletion declined: Royal Sovereign shoal[edit]

Hello Blythwood. I am just letting you know that I declined the speedy deletion of Royal Sovereign shoal, a page you tagged for speedy deletion, because of the following concern: Google first, nominate for speedy deletion after that. Thank you. Shirt58 (talk) 03:09, 27 March 2016 (UTC)

  • @Shirt58: - if you wanted to improve and keep it, that's fine, but the real issue for me was that this wasn't actually an article on the topic it was titled! It sounded like the write-up of some kind of school project about surveying and using trigonometry. Blythwood (talk) 20:25, 31 March 2016 (UTC)
    • Hi Blythwood! I think we were both right about this. Yes, it was a blob of unformatted... something... and "like the write-up of some kind of school project" when it was started. And speedy deletion tagging was the right thing to do. In my opinion, my job as an admin looking at speedy deletion candidates is to investigate blobs like that and see if there is a plausible article lurking somewhere within them. And in this case, there appeared to be one. No problems from my end if you want to send the article to WP:AFD, or redirect it to the lighthouse, or the place the shoal is located off, or whatever. Discussion on the as yet uncreated talk page would be good, first.

Thanks for reviewing Y bus formation in MATLAB, Blythwood.

Unfortunately MrX has just gone over this page again and unreviewed it. Their note is:

I'm putting this back into the review queue. It probably needs to be deleted, but is not WP:A7 eligible.

Hi Blythwood,

Thanks for helping add a link to my entry at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amanda_K._Hale. But more problems have popped up. Following the different feedback, I tried to improve it, but didn't get further response. Could you please take a look at the page and tell me if my correction is right or wrong and kindly offer me some suggestions? And then I can make improvement.

Your time and attention are greatly appreciated!

Sink condition[edit]

Hello,

I'm a pharmacist myself.

"Pharmaceuticals" is a general term for drug forms made by the "pharmaceutical industry".

While "pharmaceutics" is the science and process of preparing pharmaceuticals (tablets, ampules, etc) from chemicals.

Thus, sink condition (pharmaceutics) is a more correct name for the article. Since the entry is related to the manufacturing process (pharmaceutics science), not the products (pharmaceuticals).

Proposed deletion of Maciej Cegłowski[edit]

Ambox warning yellow.svg

The article Maciej Cegłowski has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

The coverage (references, external links, etc.) does not seem sufficient to justify this article passing Wikipedia:General notability guideline and the more detailed Wikipedia:Notability (biographies) requirement.

I don't understand why information on well-known investors is "promotional"[edit]

I am a business student and I study investing/startups. I created a page for 2 of the most well-known investors in Boston and NYC. Not to promote them, to share who they are and what they have done that has contributed to technology today. Why did you delete them? What is the purpose of that? Now people who search these individuals every day to read about their experience and learn from their careers are left without proper biographies. — Preceding unsigned comment added by DavidLorentz (talkcontribs) 16:47, 19 May 2016 (UTC)

  • @DavidLorentz: - David, I hope you'll understand that it seems to me a heck of a coincidence that all your edits are on the topic of this Flybridge company. And that you carried off exactly where NickShanman left off yesterday. And that, like Mr. Shanman, you uploaded two corporate headshots as your "own work". AIV and Flysomething Capital Partners[edit]

Hi - I'll leave your AIV reports up for a bit as there are other admins who patrol AIV that should probably have a look, but regardless I suggest you nominate all the BLPs for AFD in one nomination. You could do them individually but one nom is easier since they're related. They don't pass GNG imo, and I think this is the way to go rather than blocking. You could also start an SPI with the two named accounts, but I'd hold on that until the AFD is complete to see if they try to recreate the pages. Of course, it's entirely up to you. :-) Katietalk 16:50, 19 May 2016 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of Berthold Block[edit]

A tag has been placed on Berthold Block requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G6 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is an orphaned disambiguation page which either

  • disambiguates two or fewer extant Wikipedia pages and whose title ends in "(disambiguation)" (i.e., there is a primary topic); or
  • disambiguates no (zero) extant Wikipedia pages, regardless of its title.

Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such pages may be deleted at any time. Please see the disambiguation page guidelines for more information.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Thanks for going over the new page and spotting that error with the titles. My sources are all for the capital D except for ODNB. I expect that's how she spelled it or her books spelled it. The hymn books have her as Maria De Fleury or Maria DeFleury, so I've done a "redirect" for that. I've put the big Ds back for now as we had a mixture. I like your last sentence. Rounds it off very well. Cordially, Brian Bmcln1 (talk) 23:17, 29 July 2016 (UTC) P.S. British Library capitalizes whole surnames, so no help from there.

Thank you for your message regarding Church cantatas in Leipzig between Trinity Sunday 1725 and St. John's Day 1728‎. If I had known that it related to the works of Bach, then I would not have nominated it for deletion -- as I explained in the AfD, the article was titled in such a way that the link to Bach was not obvious. There was also no explanatory material which made that link (at the time of nomination, the article consisted of a table) or expressed any claim to notability, and there were no secondary references -- secondary references were not added until long after my nomination. As I am sure you will appreciate, on examination of the revision of the article at the time I nominated it for AfD, it was very difficult to discern why the subject matter was worthy of encyclopaedic inclusion. The article has now been fleshed out and, accordingly, I withdrew my nomination for deletion earlier today. Kind regards, Specto73 (talk) 17:39, 9 August 2016 (UTC)

  • @Specto73: - fair enough. I've gone through the history and seen the diff you tagged for deletion, and I sympathise. This is one reason why when looking at new pages I often look at a user's join date and edit count on Special:NewPagesFeed before doing anything rash. Every now and then you encounter editors who do constructive work but are not so familiar with formatting, standards that expect an article to be finished before posting, or who just haven't figured out draftspace. (Things like this whose creator said he hoped it would encourage someone else to finish it...) I most often see this in editors who registered a long time ago when standards were weaker but who haven't made that many edits recently - very often a message asking if they can get the article to a minimum viable product state as soon as possible is all that's needed. Blythwood (talk) 18:38, 9 August 2016 (UTC)

The NPP backlog now stands at 13,158 total unreviewed pages.

Just to recap:

  • 13 July 2016: 7,000
  • 1 August 2016: 9,000
  • 7 August 2016: 10,472
  • 16 August 2016: 11,500
  • 28 August 2016: 13,158

You naturally don't have to feel obliged, but if there's anything you can do it would be most appreciated. I've spent 40 hours on it this week but it's only a drop in the ocean.--Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 09:51, 28 August 2016 (UTC)

Thank you for page review[edit]

Hello there Blythwood! Thank you for reviewing the page I started on Todd and Clare. This was my first Wiki page, so please bear with me. Todd and Clare is the first and only member of the United Nations Global Compact to be a dating site--and on that UN basis--I was thinking the dating website is notable as a stub? What made me set up the article is because I think what makes Todd and Clare interesting is because of their membership of the United Nations Global Compact office in New York, which obviously isn't a promotional media outlet. I haven't removed the proposed deletion on the page, as I wanted to check with you first what the best course of action would be to take if Todd and Clare should be left as a stub? it is my first wiki entry so i am trying to read stuff while writing the article with was not complete. on the medford oregon page, the art in bloom has its own link and page and our festival is like, 3 times bigger than it, so i suggested we do a page. im always trying to learn about web design and an such and this foray into wiki has been interesting. i have been a volunteer for the organization for 10 years and i have spoken directly to the president and i have 100% backing and have actually written some of the things that are copy written on the page. how to i revert back to the one i wrote, as i will be adding media and more citations and such as i am learning to do so. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Missdejablue (talkcontribs) 13:03, 1 September 2016 (UTC)

Schoolbook characters[edit]

If you look at https://www.behance.net/gallery/28579883/Cormorant-an-open-source-display-font-family and compare the standard, Garamond, and infant sets, you will see variations in the capital U and W—the infant U has a tail/serif on the right, and the infant W isn’t crossed. Peace. —MuzikJunky (talk) 20:30, 7 September 2016 (UTC)

  • @MuzikJunky:, OK, thanks for letting me know. I think, though, that it probably isn't a good idea to mention this as I don't know of any "professional" fonts that use this - Cormorant is (while very nice) mostly an amateur project. Rollback granted[edit]

Wikipedia Rollbacker.svg

Hi Blythwood. After reviewing your request for "rollbacker", I have enabled rollback on your account. Keep in mind these things when going to use rollback:

  • Getting rollback is no more momentous than installing Twinkle.
  • Rollback should be used to revert clear cases of vandalism only, and not good faith edits.
  • Rollback should never be used to edit war.
  • If abused, rollback rights can be revoked.
  • Use common sense.

If you no longer want rollback, contact me and I'll remove it. Also, for some more information on how to use rollback, see Wikipedia:New admin school/Rollback (even though you're not an admin). I'm sure you'll do great with rollback, but feel free to leave me a message on my talk page if you run into troubles or have any questions about appropriate/inappropriate use of rollback. Baklava - Turkish special, 80-ply.JPEG For your message about the entry "Zhongde Liu":

Can we add some citations demonstrating that the facts in the article

I've moved the article to Zhongde Liu as it's normal for Wikipedia articles to use Romanised names - see WP:ZHNAME. You can move it again if you want to use a different Romanisation system. The Chinese name is still accessible as a redirect.

My Response:

This is an assignment in a course about marketing on Coursera to contribute an entry and check the reaction from Wikipedia. It's amazing experience.

Sure, you can add citations to the entry whenever you want to do. Also, it is fine to change the name into Romanized one. I tried to change it by my own but I could not get any idea how to do it.

Thank you and have a good day.

BLPPROD[edit]

Hiya! I happened on the Carmen Reyes through NPP and thought I'd touch base because I did the exact same thing a month or two ago--the BLPPROD procedure is so bizarre, it is so weird that citing an unreliable source is enough to avoid BLPPROD. I was actually thinking of hopping into the talk page over there because I think the lead on that explanation could really use revision to clarify how it's supposed work (at minimum--frankly I think maybe it'd be better eliminated altogether, but that's a bigger conversation). If you're interested in discussing too, lemme know! Meanwhile I just reverted the auto-notice to the user's talk page, just for clarity. Thanks! Innisfree987 (talk) 16:45, 6 October 2016 (UTC)

Hi Blythwood! I’m reaching out to you because our logs tell us you’re an active Twinkle new user welcomer. The WMF Collaboration team is working on new tools that we hope will be useful to people engaged in reviewing recent changes, fighting vandalism or supporting new users. We want to test them for usability with editors who are experienced with relevant wiki work. If you’re interested in helping to shape this new technology—we’d like to hear from you.

The testing should take about an hour, will be conducted online, and will take place during the next few weeks. To participate, please email dchen[at]wikimedia.org with the subject line Twinkle Welcomer. Include the following information:

  • Username
  • Email where we can reach you
  • Your city or time zone

May I ask why you removed the whole section about usage? I think that is useful/interesting, no? PointOfPresence (talk) 14:08, 19 October 2016 (UTC)

  • Hi PointOfPresence. I was doing a tune-up of the article, previously almost unsourced, and I have to admit I think it's a very big list, completely unsourced, and I hadn't the patience to source every single use of it - this is one of the most popular fonts in the world, so the number is not small. Fonts in Use also do a good job of covering this kind of thing in the most interesting cases. For an obscure font like URW Grotesk, it's interesting to note the uses, but for this, a default font with the world's most popular pro design software the uses are almost infinite... But feel free to add uses if you know of them and think they are particularly interesting. Blythwood (talk) 19:04, 19 October 2016 (UTC)

Just curious... an answer of yours on the humanities refdesk[edit]

I found your humanities refdesk suggestion to the singaporean-malay student to consult an immigration lawyer odd.

University policy on refunding fees should a foreign student be unable to complete their course due to immigration law changes IS something the University could comment on - I wouldn't know if they would necessarily have any plans at this point as to how they will handle this situation should it ever arise, but it can't hurt to ask.

But how could any lawyer advise on a hypothetical law which at the moment is nothing more than a bunch of Trump statements / thought bubbles? If there was already a draft version of a proposed law before congress, a lawyer could advise what the law would mean for his client should it be passed. But with Trump's immigration reform proposals, we're a long way from that point. The specifics of any actual legislation which may eventuate are largely speculative, and are still subject to a winding procedure before even a draft version emerges. (BTW, from my understanding of Trump's words, he only plans to "blacklist" those countries where background checks cannot be performed. I doubt Singapore, a first-world country with effective police and intelligence services, would fall into this category. But like everything, that's speculation). Just curious, do you expect a lawyer to be able to advise in this situation, and if so, how?

You can respond either here or on my talk page. Thanks :) Eliyohub (talk) 16:12, 17 November 2016 (UTC)

Jeremy Tankard[edit]

Hi Blythwood, thanks very much for your kind words about the changes I tried to make to this page.

A senior Wiki editor called User:Justlettersandnumbers has just undone all the work claiming: "R a good deal of unreferenced and/or inappropriate content – this was much better before". It's perhaps a bit harsh?

With greatest respect to your having started the page, I do think the work I did on it was at least a little bit of a help. (First of all, we really ought not to be calling typefaces "fonts" so that has to be changed for sure). But (apart from the birthdate you correctly pointed out) most of the new material was indeed referenced properly wasn't it?.

Gotta say I don't really understanding his/her motives for such a brutal chop back to (your) first version. Pretty inexperienced here so would much appreciate your thoughts or advice please?

All I wanted to do was help make a better page and if you might be willing to fine tune it, bringing in some of the bits I added (and also added by Artoftype and others) then hopefully we can do a decent job restoring some of the points and making it pretty perfect and pleasing to Justlettersandnumbers?

Thanks in advance :-)

MapMark User:Mapmark (talk) 14:53, 03 December 2016 (UTC)

  • Hi Mapmark! I realise you may be a friend of Mr. Tankard, and you're certainly welcome to add extra material back if you have a reference, but I think you should be careful in what you add. Like I said, we can't add any information that's not sourced, so JLAN's edit (while pretty aggressive) didn't strike me as unjustifiable - I have to say that a lot of the info added was either unsourced (or at least not sourced to a citation directly following) or not that interesting e.g. education and early work.
Although I'm not familiar with the backstory, I understand that this article was deleted a decade ago by people who felt that Mr. Tankard or people connected with him had turned it into an autobiography, and I'd prefer to keep this version short and to-the-point rather than have it go the same way.
I don't feel I have ownership of the content of the article so feel free to make improvements, but if you plan to edit articles about people connected to you, you must file a disclosure on the talk page explaining that you're writing about a friend in order to ensure transparency, and avoid adding any text that could be considered promotional. Blythwood (talk) 23:57, 15 December 2016 (UTC)
@Mapmark:, just an additional thought. I'm trying to generally upgrade the font coverage on Wikipedia and while I thought this would be a good article to add I don't in any way feel ownership to it - I also see sensitivity as important as I wouldn't consider Mr. Tankard to be a public figure. If you or Mr. Tankard just find what I've written completely objectionable and don't want this article, you or he can file a deletion proposal and I won't challenge it. Anyway, let me know what you think. Blythwood (talk) 08:12, 16 December 2016 (UTC)

Your contributions to City (typeface)[edit]

Thank you! I am not a designer, but I've long been interested in typefaces and I liked City since I noticed it on the covers of my IBM manuals. Which was a long time ago. These seemingly small details you added and fixed do add a great deal of "texture" to an article. And yes, no need to mention the designer's birth and death year when we have a whole article on him. I've long felt that articles should be about their subjects, and irrelevant details of related subjects can almost always go away, especially if they're covered in related articles. Thank you so much for fixing the categories on our event (meetup) page. I knew I was doing something wrong, but couldn't figure it out. We're hoping to have a number of new articles created on the day. If you have any advice, do let us know. Sharonlflynn (talk) 16:11, 30 January 2017 (UTC)

New Page Review - newsletter No.2[edit]

Hello Blythwood,
Wikipedia New page reviewer.svg
A HUGE backlog

We now have 413 New Page Reviewers!
Most of us requested the user right at PERM, expressing a wish to be able to do something about the huge backlog, but the chart on the right does not demonstrate any changes to the pre-user-right levels of October.

Hitting 17,000 soon

The backlog is still steadily growing at a rate of 150 a day or 4,650 a month. Only 20 reviews a day by each reviewer over the next few days would bring the backlog down to a managable level and the daily input can then be processed by each reviewer doing only 2 or 3 reviews a day - that's about 5 minutes work!
It didn't work in time to relax for the Xmas/New Year holidays. Let's see if we can achieve our goal before Easter, otherwise by Thanksgiving it will be closer to 70,000.

Second set of eyes

Remember that we are the only guardians of quality of new articles, we alone have to ensure that pages are being correctly tagged by non-Reviewer patrollers and that new authors are not being bitten.

Abuse

This is even more important and extra vigilance is required considering Orangemoody, and

  1. this very recent case of paid advertising by a Reviewer resulting in a community ban.
  2. this case in January of paid advertising by a Reviewer, also resulting in a community ban.
  3. This Reviewer is indefinitely blocked for sockpuppetry.

Coordinator election[edit]

Kudpung is stepping down after 6 years as unofficial coordinator of New Page Patrolling/Reviewing. There is enough work for two people and two coords are now required. Details are at NPR Coordinators; nominate someone or nominate yourself. Date for the actual suffrage will be published later.

Thank you[edit]

Thanks for your help with my event page! I'm a new editor and a bit clueless. Quizfan77 (talk) 15:05, 15 February 2017 (UTC) PS - have added the event to the template but cannot see a way to add it to the calendar, I've tried editing page source and section source, does it get pulled in from somewhere else? Sorry! Quizfan77 (talk) 15:19, 15 February 2017 (UTC)

New Page Review - newsletter No.3[edit]

Hello Blythwood,
Wikipedia New page reviewer.svg

Voting for coordinators has now begun HERE and will continue through/to 23:59 UTC Monday 06 March. Please be sure to vote. Any registered, confirmed editor can vote. Nominations are now closed.

Still a MASSIVE backlog

We now have 413 New Page Reviewers but despite numerous appeals for help, the backlog has NOT been significantly reduced.
If you asked for the New Page Reviewer right, please consider investing a bit of time - every little helps preventing spam and trash entering the mainspace and Google when the 'NO_INDEX' tags expire.

The future of NPP and AfC[edit]

Voting for coordinators has now begun HERE and will continue through/to 23:59 UTC Monday 06 March. The coordinators will do their best for for the advancement of the improvement of NPP and AfC and generally keep tracks on the development of those things. Coordinators have no additional or special user benefits, but they will be 'go to' people and will try to keep discussions in the right places. This very much involves this project too, especially with growing renewed interest around the site about what WP:ACTRIAL was all about.

Please be sure to vote. Any registered, confirmed editor can vote. Nominations are now closed.

Comparei4me deletion[edit]

Hi, I noticed that you requested a speedy deletion of my entry on Compareit4me, and to be honest I'm pretty upset by that. The article is written no differently to thousands of company pages on Wikipedia, and citations to credible sources are provided throughout the article. Indeed, compared to most pages on companies in the Middle East, this article was of pretty high quality. There were no factual errors in there (check the citations), and I was responding to comments made by other editors and making changes as requested. To simply delete the article is insane. If it needs to be re-written, why not re-write it yourself? This is a company that has over 500,000 monthly users. It's valued at over $40 million. As for the conflict of interest - yes I'm an employee at the company, but I'm a trained journalist and from the outset of creating this article I've remained impartial, provided citations to company claims and taken action on editor comments. Happy to file a disclosure statement. Mrtompaye (talk) 03:00, 27 February 2017 (UTC)

The Wife of Bath’s Tale[edit]

Thanks for finding that. I could not imagine us not already having it, but did not find the earlier one. Oh, WP:CSD#A10 apples. Dlohcierekim 13:24, 26 April 2017 (UTC)

  • @Dlohcierekim: - no worries. Just to explain, the reason why I didn't CSD it outright is that I've encountered several times on NPP people creating duplicate articles like this, so since it wasn't doing any harm I thought it would be nice to give her a chance to copy text over before deletion.
Sometimes, I've run into people using Wikipedia as a place to draft an essay for another purpose, like college coursework, because they thought it would be a convenient place for that - even things like university applications. (Here's a previous case where I did speedy and [[User talk:KathandMak|felt rather bad about it...]) Or I've run into new contributors without much confidence who were very nervous about editing a preexisting article since they thought only 'special people' could do that (or perhaps couldn't face the idea of improving a pre-existing text) so they decided to write their own new one. (Articles on this pattern often have titles like "Simone de Beauvoir: a feminist perspective" or "New developments in understanding of glucose metabolism".)
So I felt it would be polite to PROD with a message so she had a chance to copy any text over. Blythwood (talk) 16:37, 26 April 2017 (UTC)
cool. Dlohcierekim 16:57, 26 April 2017 (UTC)

Thanks for the information[edit]

Hi Blythwood,

Thanks for all the info about notability and making species pages. I will plan on making a few pages for my favorite species once I have the time. I'm still new to editing and especially formatting, but I'll just make sure to make sure everything has a citation and rely on you (and others) for any specific pointers or corrections that might be needed.

Thanks,

Zportman (talk) 23:11, 27 April 2017 (UTC)

Patrol[edit]

Sir/Madam: thank you for your review of Coquille River Falls and Ice Lake (Oregon), plus your edits to both. I added references and retouched the information you picked up as contradictory. Please know the errors are not blatant but mistakes of eagerness mixed with little time.

On another note, do not ever, under any circumstance, return to my talk page to make innuendos on the stability (or otherwise) of my mental or physical capacities. Whether you feel empowered by beta-amyloids or the fraternity of the bourgeoisie, blatant [sic] irreverence of this kind is the already so noted reason too many superb editors and volunteers run off this project. Best, Fimbriata (talk) 06:04, 29 April 2017 (UTC)

Template[edit]

So, I don't do war editing. I'll leave here the template data and leave it to you to determine if the numbers are accurate and the sources reliable ... enough at least to re-post into the template at your convenience. I left the references with a cite template in case you want to post them up, you can save some time by copy-paste the citation.

Depth: 95 feet = 29 m[1]
Area: 64 acres = 0.1 sq miles[2][3][4]

New Page Review - Newsletter No.4[edit]

Hello Blythwood,
Wikipedia New page reviewer.svg

Since rolling out the right in November, just 6 months ago, we now have 413 reviewers, but the backlog is still mysteriously growing fast. If every reviewer did just 55 reviews, the 22,000 backlog would be gone, in a flash, schwoop, just like that!

But do remember: Rather than speed, quality and depth of patrolling and the use of correct CSD criteria are essential to good reviewing. Do not over-tag. Make use of the message feature to let the creator know about your maintenance tags. See the tutorial again HERE. Get help HERE.

Stay up to date with recent new page developments and have your say, read THIS PAGE.
