Thank you[edit]

Oh, thank you! I've been an experienced contributor to the Spanish Wikipedia, where I have dozens of contributions; but now I feel confident with my English to ammend some things I fetch in this Wiki. Can you perform the edition I proposed in the Thatcher's article? Thanks for your welcoming message! Sam10rc (talk) 11:12, 3 July 2016 (UTC)

That is a complex article and I am not particularly familiar with things there. That is best left to the regular editors of the page. I have moved your comment from the top to the bottom where it is most likely to be seen. I have also added the {{edit semi-protected}} template to get the attention of people. HighInBC Need help? {{ping|HighInBC}} 14:06, 3 July 2016 (UTC)

Thank you again. I'll make these kind of editions by myself once I have my account self-confirmed. Will watch Thatcher's article in the following. Sam10rc (talk) 14:09, 4 July 2016 (UTC)

@Sam10rc: you only need 30 days and 10 edits to be auto-confirmed. You have 7 edits so far, if you reply to me you will have 8. So it is not far away. HighInBC Need help? {{ping|HighInBC}} 14:33, 4 July 2016 (UTC)

@HighInBC: So here I have 8. Oops, I forgot the signature. This makes 9. And so I sum up to a total of 10, I expect you forgive this lese majeste of editing above the signature.Sam10rc (talk) 10:53, 5 July 2016 (UTC)

After my block removing talk page access, I was writing up my decline reason. Hope you don't mind. --NeilN talk to me 14:39, 3 July 2016 (UTC)

I don't mind. I generally avoid that from happening by putting the unblock-on-hold template up before I review their edits, even for simple cases. I figured I should pass onto them the OTRS contact. The volunteers there are used to dealing with folks who lack the social skills to work on wiki.
I very much agree with the removal of the talk page access, was going to do that myself. Given what they were blocked for it probably should have been done up front. HighInBC Need help? {{ping|HighInBC}} 14:41, 3 July 2016 (UTC)
Good tip. I'll do that in the future. --NeilN talk to me 14:44, 3 July 2016 (UTC)

Greece vs FYROM[edit]

Macedonia is not the country but the name of the administrative division of Greece, namely the geographical region . Can yis territories reach and Macedonia but not Macedonian but Slavs . And the United Nations recognizes it as FYROM. These ... Do you want to continue the lesson ; Do you understand; It is rather an insult.--Νικόλας Παπαποστόλου (talk) 07:30, 25 June 2016 (UTC)

You are welcome to make your point on the talk page but this has already been discussed at length and settled. Probably not everybody know your story. The Macedonian kingdom was Greek. when there probably was not even Slavs. You know the 'Macedonians do so? I guess not. Because they had no history and want to have, and so they took the story of their neighbors. And why had not history? (you ask me). Because they had not yet discovered writing (while Alexander had biographers and wrote what he did so we know what we did) so Cyril and Methodius (from Byzantine history) went the built alphabet, taught them Christianity etc. Got it now? Even with questioning ?--Νικόλας Παπαποστόλου (talk) 08:00, 1 July 2016 (UTC)

Look you are not the first person to come to Wikipedia with their nationalist beliefs. This decision was not made out of ignorance. This is not my decision it was made by the community.
I am not particularly interested in your opinions on the country of Macedonia. I get that you don't like the name they chose, just because you don't like it does not make it not so. I am not sure how to tell you that your nationalist opinions are not relevant to an encyclopedic article. HighInBC Need help? {{ping|HighInBC}} 18:43, 3 July 2016 (UTC)

I said I'm not a nationalist nor nationalistic views . It's true opinions and the side of truth . It seems you have trouble understanding and not me . You do not understand anything of all what to say so long? Probably not. Well stay on lies. Poor truth but what blame you believe the lie ? Nothing. You wait to the believe it! FYROM FYROM again ! You say that you understand me, but you keep chanting the mantra of "truth" at me, even though I have already explained my position on "truth". Nikolas, this is the international English language Wikipedia, and we don't care what articles on the Greek Wikipedia say, or what the Greek government says, we go only by what international reliable sources say. Nothing in your attitude has changed even one iota since August of last year, so even attempting to discuss with you is just a big waste of time and energy, because you don't want to listen, and you're not here to build an encyclopaedia, only to push Greek POV and "right great wrongs". Hi there. You seem like a rational person and judging from your wiki entry you live in the same place I do. I would like to pick your brain on editing wiki when you are back online. I'm trying to figure out what I've done wrong where I feel like people have it in for me on here. If we could have a quick chat on here one day I'd like that. Morph1138 (talk) 03:01, 7 July 2016 (UTC)

You have explained yourself and remained polite, that is about the best thing you can do. The reason you are under suspicion is because 2 other IPs showed up with the same opinion as you right around the time you made your first edit. I don't have much to add to the investigation other than while I found it suspect I did not think myself that there was actionable evidence. HighInBC Need help? {{ping|HighInBC}} 13:53, 7 July 2016 (UTC)

Your signature[edit]

I've noticed that you're using {{ping}} in your signature. I've tried adding it a few days back to my signature, but it kept converting it to {{SUBST:ping|}} even with the nowiki tag. I stumbled upon one of your comments by chance, and your signature had what I want to do. Could you post your signature field? —Hexafluoride (talk) 14:28, 7 July 2016 (UTC)

I don't know how it would be done with the standard signature, as I am transcluding mine. It is stored here: User:HighInBC/signature.
Do you have the "Treat the above as wiki markup" clicked on? HighInBC Need help? {{ping|HighInBC}} 14:29, 7 July 2016 (UTC)
I see. No, I was inserting the formatting directly in the field. It seems that I'll need to do it like you. The wiki markup is enabled. —Hexafluoride (talk) 15:05, 7 July 2016 (UTC)
The result: —Hexafluoride (talk) Use {{re|Hexafluoride}} when replying on your talk 15:16, 7 July 2016 (UTC).
FYI HighInBC is substituting their signature, not transcluding, which is prohibited. Looks like Hexa is not transcluding either, but thought I'd make this clear nonetheless :) MusikAnimal talk 15:59, 8 July 2016 (UTC)

You replied to a report at ANI in March 2016 about a user who routinely changes numbers in infoboxes (I've seen height and reach). I just encountered Chingis1991 (talk · contribs) because one of their recent edits broke a template which put the article in an error tracking category that I monitor. Hi, I've just noticed on Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/What Culture Pro Wrestling that you said you'd be prepared to userfy the old article if someone would be prepared to take on the challenge of sorting it out. I would like to take on that challenge as I was thinking of creating the page myself with proper sourcing but I think it could help if I saw what was on before as a template. I may not use any of it and write it my own way but I would like to take a stab at it so can I ask if it could be userfied to my space please? The C of E God Save the Queen! Extended confirmed protection[edit]

Padlock-blue.svgHello, HighInBC. This message is intended to notify administrators of important changes to the protection policy.

Extended confirmed protection (also known as "30/500 protection") is a new level of page protection that only allows edits from accounts at least 30 days old and with 500 edits. The automatically assigned "extended confirmed" user right was created for this purpose. The protection level was created following this community discussion with the primary intention of enforcing various arbitration remedies that prohibited editors under the "30 days/500 edits" threshold to edit certain topic areas.

In July and August 2016, a request for comment established consensus for community use of the new protection level. Administrators are authorized to apply extended confirmed protection to combat any form of disruption (e.g. vandalism, sock puppetry, edit warring, etc.) on any topic, subject to the following conditions:

  • Extended confirmed protection may only be used in cases where semi-protection has proven ineffective. It should not be used as a first resort.
  • A bot will post a notification at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard of each use. MusikBot currently does this by updating a report, which is transcluded onto the noticeboard.
Please review the protection policy carefully before using this new level of protection on pages. Thank you.
This message was sent to the administrators' mass message list. To opt-out of future messages, please remove yourself from the list. 17:48, 23 September 2016 (UTC)

Two-Factor Authentication now available for admins[edit]

Please note that TOTP based two-factor authentication is now available for all administrators. In light of the recent compromised accounts, you are encouraged to add this additional layer of security to your account. It may be enabled on your preferences page in the "User profile" tab under the "Basic information" section. For basic instructions on how to enable two-factor authentication, please see the developing help page for additional information. Important: Be sure to record the two-factor authentication key and the single use keys. If you lose your two factor authentication and do not have the keys, it's possible that your account will not be recoverable. Furthermore, you are encouraged to utilize a unique password and two-factor authentication for the email account associated with your Wikimedia account. This measure will assist in safeguarding your account from malicious password resets. Comments, questions, and concerns may be directed to the thread on the administrators' noticeboard. A new user right for New Page Patrollers[edit]

Hi HighInBC.

A new user group, New Page Reviewer, has been created in a move to greatly improve the standard of new page patrolling. The user right can be granted by any admin at PERM. It is highly recommended that admins look beyond the simple numerical threshold and satisfy themselves that the candidates have the required skills of communication and an advanced knowledge of notability and deletion. Admins are automatically included in this user right.

It is anticipated that this user right will significantly reduce the work load of admins who patrol the performance of the patrollers. However, due to the complexity of the rollout, some rights may have been accorded that may later need to be withdrawn, so some help will still be needed to some extent when discovering wrongly applied deletion tags or inappropriate pages that escape the attention of less experienced reviewers, and above all, hasty and bitey tagging for maintenance. User warnings are available here but very often a friendly custom message works best.

ArbCom Elections 2016: Voting now open![edit]

Scale of justice 2.svgHello, HighInBC. Voting in the 2016 Arbitration Committee elections is open from Monday, 00:00, 21 November through Sunday, 23:59, 4 December to all unblocked users who have registered an account before Wednesday, 00:00, 28 October 2016 and have made at least 150 mainspace edits before Sunday, 00:00, 1 November 2016.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2016 election, please review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 22:08, 21 November 2016 (UTC)

Your inactive bot(s)[edit]

Hello HighInBC. We currently show that you are the operator on file for at least one bot account that appears to be inactive. Please see the discussion and list of bots here: Wikipedia:Bot owners' noticeboard#Inactive bots over 5 years. If you are no longer operating your bot, no action is required - your bot will be marked as retired and have the bot flag removed. Should your bot be retired and you wish to revive it in the future, please request bot authorization at WP:BRFA. If you are still in control of your bot (including knowing its hopefully strong password) and wish to maintain the bot flag, please sign the table on the linked discussion. Thank you, — xaosflux Talk 14:41, 26 November 2016 (UTC)

Hi. I don't know much about the details of this matter. I do know that last time I was made to feel a bit foolish for passing on their request[2]. I have no strong opinion on this matter and will defer to your judgement. HighInBC Need help? {{ping|HighInBC}} 21:06, 11 January 2017 (UTC)

Haven't seen you around much. Hope everything is well. --NeilN talk to me 14:32, 15 February 2017 (UTC)

Things are well with me. Every few years I see an example of abusive users being protected by administrator friends and it frustrates me as I joined this community with the expectation that civility was an expected norm.
But that is not why I have been away so long, I have just been very busy lately. Things are pretty good around here.
I do feel bad about taking this break right after being accepted into the BAG group, but I will try to make it up to them later. Thanks for thinking of me. HighInBC Need help? {{ping|HighInBC}} 18:18, 15 February 2017 (UTC)

  • In the last 3 months, only 3 BAG members have closed requests - help is needed with the backlog.

your advanced rights[edit]

hi there, regarding your advanced rights, why don't you just give them up, you are not using them to benefit the community any more. Govindaharihari (talk) 14:59, 28 October 2018 (UTC)

(watching) @Govindaharihari: Well maybe; but think it only becomes an issue if they're using them to the detriment of the community. In any case, why the suggestion? It seems a little out of left field you know. ——SerialNumber54129 15:03, 28 October 2018 (UTC)
it is just something I support that users with advanced permissions that don't need them and or are not using them should give them up. I also do not support advanced users that make minimal edits to avoid the removal of their advanced permissions, you can see in the last two years there are only three admin edits Govindaharihari (talk) 15:14, 28 October 2018 (UTC)

Hello. This issue has come up repeatedly in community discussion. Unless I have missed something, which is possible, the community has decided not to do this.

I will also point out that this is not my first extended absence. I have been away for a while in the past and have come back to do more good work. It is very possible I may return in the future to do more good work. HighInBC Need help? {{ping|HighInBC}} 18:42, 28 October 2018 (UTC)

HBC AIV helperbot – rangeblocks[edit]

Hey HighInBC, how've you been? I'm wondering if you have a moment to update HBC AIV helperbot to be aware of rangeblocks when removing actioned reports from AIV. It seems like that could be accomplished by passing the bkip parameter rather than bkusers for IPs when calling the API in the check_user subroutine in the bot's source code. (I have no clue how Perl works, so I'm not making any direct suggestions, but I'd guess it wouldn't be very difficult.) Thanks! Kevin (aka L235 · t · c) 08:32, 5 November 2018 (UTC)

I might have time to take a look at it, but no promises. It has been years since I looked at that code. HighInBC Need help? {{ping|HighInBC}} 00:54, 13 November 2018 (UTC)
