Question from 19Chippy47! (08:40, 27 September 2026)

[edit]

Hello Claudine! I am interested in editing a page in a biography where I found some errors. I would like your advice about how to correct the errors.

Thank you! 19Chippy47 --19Chippy47! (talk) 08:40, 27 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hello! What's the name of the article, and what are the errors? —ClaudineChionh (she/her · talk · email) 10:22, 29 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
 – Moved reply to correct thread —ClaudineChionh (she/her · talk · email)
The article is titled M. Anantanarayanan
The error was stating he was a lawyer. Although he served in the Indian Civil Service, he never needed to be a lawyer to serve in the judiciary, which he did. The rules governing ICS officers were such that they need not be lawyers in order to serve as judges, provided they could demonstrate experience and knowledge to the government which appoints them through the appropriate authorities. He was a many sided man who served Tamil Nadu and India in many ways and this brief notice needs to be edited (in my view). I am his youngest son (full disclosure!) and have many citations etc to substantially enhance the content. I do not fully understand the Wikipedia conventions and terminology as yet, hence I will be grateful for your advice and guidance. 19Chippy47! (talk) 12:43, 29 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for the disclosure, and indeed, Wikipedia is full of jargon and complex procedures which can be overwhelming for a newcomer. One quick tip: you can create a link to another page by adding double square brackets to the title, like [[Example]].
If M. Anantanarayanan is the correct article, that was created many years ago when Wikipedia's referencing standards were much looser, and it currently has no footnotes at all. As his son, you should not edit the article directly, but make edit requests on the article's talk page. Providing references and more details of his life and career would be an improvement; reliable sources is the guideline for the kinds of sources we're looking for. —ClaudineChionh (she/her · talk · email) 13:39, 29 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

Question from InsightEditor123 (07:21, 29 September 2026)

[edit]

Hi, we are trying to publish a new page for Takshashila University through translation ( Tamil to English ), but the page is not being published successfully.

Could you please guide us on what we should do in this situation? Is there a different process we should follow to create and publish a new page? --InsightEditor123 (talk) 07:21, 29 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hello! Who are the "we" in your message? And are you fluent in both Tsmil and English? You will need to gain more editing experience before you can publish translated articles or completely new articles yourself. —ClaudineChionh (she/her · talk · email) 10:22, 29 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
Hi Claudine, Thanks for your reply. I was educated in a Tamil medium school in Madras (aka Chennai) for 8 years and later studied Maths and Physics in English in the University of Madras for 4 years (BSc degree) and obtained a Masters (MSc) in Mathematics in two years at the Indian Inst. of Tech, (IITM at Madras). After that I went to the California Inst. of Technology (CalTech, in Pasadena) and studied Applied Mathematics and theoretical Physics (getting my PhD in 1972). After a year there as a post-doc researcher and instructor I returned to India, and worked as an Assistant Prof. at IITM. In 1975, I came to England and settled n the UK and worked on Plasma Fusion at the Culham Centre for Fusion Energy, near Oxford from 1978 to 2010 when I retired. Since that time, I have been a consultant to both Bristol Univ (Astrophysics) and at Culham. As I come from a family of considerable Tamil and English Scholarship, I am reasonably fluent in both languages. The "we" refers to my siblings who ae also interested in having the errors corrected. As to your query about the Takshashila University translations, I am not sure if I can help constructively. I would have to know the problems you face and what I personally can help you with. ~2026-52308-54 (talk) 12:06, 29 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
I didn't ask for your CV, just an indication of your knowledge of the original and target languages. And I said nothing about facing problems or needing your help with your draft. What you will need to do, before attempting to publish a new Wikipedia article or a translation from another language Wikipedia, is gain some solid experience with smaller, less ambitious editing tasks, and learning the core policies here. I'll add some introductory links on your talk page. —ClaudineChionh (she/her · talk · email) 12:28, 29 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
Forgive me for explaining how I came by my knowledge of English and Tamil. To quote, you actually said, " Could you please guide us on what we should do in this situation? Is there a different process we should follow to create and publish a new page?"
If you are asking me to guide you, and tell you what you should do in this situation, I needed to understand the real difficulties you wanted my guidance for! I cannot reasonably suggest a "different process" if I don't know what the process you were following. I am quite happy to learn what I need to, if I can look up the necessary rules. By the way, I prefer communicating by emails which are a lot more direct as a means of communication. I gathered that this was possible but from what you say here, it is not? 19Chippy47! (talk) 17:28, 29 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
I'm confused here: who is replying to me now? InsightEditor123 or 19Chippy47!? Please don't mix up different discussion threads. —ClaudineChionh (she/her · talk · email) 22:32, 29 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

Question from Mike Nolan Wiki (02:07, 30 September 2026)

[edit]

Hi Claudine

The IBM System 360 Model 20 article mentions that one of the two reasons for creating the Model 20 was as “a replacement for tabulating equipment”. I worked on a Mod20 57 years ago and I thought that a brief reference to the Punch Card Utilities which emulated various models of tabulating equipment would be appropriate.

In the Card Programming Support section I would like to add this sentence:

“This included the Punch Card Utilities which emulated various models of IBM tabulating equipment.”

Is this a suitable thing to do?

Thank You Mike --Mike Nolan Wiki (talk) 02:07, 30 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

Apologies for the delay. I see you've updated the article; what each new sentence needs now is at least one citation from a secondary source to back it up. As an encyclopaedia, Wikipedia can't rely on firsthand experience. —ClaudineChionh (she/her · talk · email) 22:35, 7 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
I have misplaced my copy of the IBM Reference manual for Punch Card Utilities but I am having another one sent to me. As soon as I get it I will provide the citation. Mike Nolan Wiki (talk) 22:47, 7 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

Question from Human1990ala (12:51, 30 September 2026)

[edit]

Thank you, ClaudineChionh. I created the account so I could add an article on the off-Broadway and London show Heated Rivalry: The Unauthorized Musical Parody, which I was surprised doesn't yet have an entry (but is described on the main Heated Rivalry television series entry). I understand it may take up to 5 weeks to review a draft. As I am new to this process, even though I read all the guide pages as carefully as I could, are you able to please check and see if I drafted it properly, and if I submitted it properly so now review is in queue?

I thought I did but when I went to look at drafts it gave me the submission button again, so I clicked submit again. Thank you for your patience with a newbie! --Human1990ala (talk) 12:51, 30 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

Apologies for the delay, and congratulations on getting your draft accepted! —ClaudineChionh (she/her · talk · email) 22:29, 7 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

Retirement

[edit]

I am retiring from Wikipedia. Wikipedia was built on the philosophy of curiosity leading to discovery. I believe this is why I was attracted in the first place. I'm stepping back while I still remember what the curiosity felt like. Thank you for your contributions! All messages on my talk page are welcome. CostalCal (talk) 02:53, 3 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for your contributions. Wikibreaks and (semi-)retirement can be healthy; you will be welcome back when/if you feel ready to return. —ClaudineChionh (she/her · talk · email) 01:12, 4 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

How do I add an image? --Chawkins26 (talk) 02:38, 5 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

Welcome to Wikipedia! There are links to a few important policies and guidelines at the top of Help:Pictures. Did you want to add an image that's already hosted on Wikipedia or Wikimedia Commons, or to upload a new image? Adding (new or existing) images to articles is somewhat complex, especially if you haven't already familiarised yourself with making simpler edits. Uploading new images involves additional steps and Wikipedia:Image use policy is mandatory reading. —ClaudineChionh (she/her · talk · email) 22:04, 7 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

Update to comments received from review

[edit]

Hi Claudine, I send a reply to our conversation regarding feedback from the reviewer on my draft article, which I have since updated. Checking you received that message as I have not had a reply. Thank you, 47QAS (talk) 15:20, 7 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hello! Editors can generally only give you feedback on what we can see on-wiki, so yes, if you have an updated version of the draft, do update the wiki version and submit it for review. There's no need to ask for comments before submitting for review.
(I didn't see your response from last week because that thread had already been archived and you replied to the archived version, which doesn't send me notifications. I've restored it from the archive for reference. Threads here are archived after two weeks because I get a lot of messages.) —ClaudineChionh (she/her · talk · email) 21:52, 7 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
Thank you, that makes sense. I'll resubmit. 47QAS (talk) 07:22, 8 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
