License tagging for File:Walls-and-margins-cover-thumb.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Walls-and-margins-cover-thumb.jpg. You don't seem to have indicated the license status of the image. Wikipedia uses a set of image copyright tags to indicate this information.

To add a tag to the image, select the appropriate tag from this list, click on this link, then click "Edit this page" and add the tag to the image's description. If there doesn't seem to be a suitable tag, the image is probably not appropriate for use on Wikipedia. For help in choosing the correct tag, or for any other questions, leave a message on Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. Thank you for your cooperation. --ImageTaggingBot (talk) 12:08, 31 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Reply[edit]

Hi, thanks for message. Several major issues. I deleted your article because

  • it did not provide independent verifiable sources to enable us to verify the facts and show that it meets the notability guidelines. Sources that are not acceptable include those linked to the organisation, press releases, YouTube, IMDB, social media and other sites that can be self-edited, blogs, websites of unknown or non-reliable provenance, and sites that are just reporting what the organisation claims or interviewing its management. You gave some references, but they were not in-line so we can't tell what fact each is supporting. In any case it's clear that most, if not all are links to affiliated sites, interviews with the curator etc, not independent third-party sources.
  • The notability guidelines for organisations and companies have been updated. The primary criteria has five components that must be evaluated separately and independently to determine if it is met:
  1. significant coverage in
  2. independent,
  3. multiple,
  4. reliable,
  5. secondary sources.
Note that an individual source must meet all four criteria to be counted towards notability. None of your text is linked to a supporting reference, let alone one that meets those criteria.
In practice, those rules are likely to be less stringently applied for a museum than a commercial company, but there are no verifiable facts in your text, let alone basic information like funding, expenditure, numbers of visitors which might help establish notability.
  • it was written in a promotional tone. Articles must be neutral and encyclopaedic. As you say, you have a list of exhibitions, but linking to catalogues looks promotional. Examples of unsourced or self-sourced claims presented as fact include: has shown works that highlight the value of heritage, family, structure and history and how it is translated in the context of globalisation... initiates, supports and presents artistic projects all over the world... aims to create a public platform for critical debate around the contemporary art practice of artists with Arab heritage... the most comprehensive publicly accessible art collection in the Middle East.
  • there shouldn't be any url links in the article, only in the "References" or "External links" sections. That's particularly the case when they are spamlinks to affiliated sites. the external links should be as it is at at present, a single link to the gallery.
  • Some of the images are copyright violations. Copyrighted images are not allowed in Wikipedia, as outlined in this policy. That applies even to pages created by you or your organisation, unless they state clearly and explicitly that the text is public domain. The copied site was marked . We require that images posted here can be used, modified and distributed for any purpose, including commercial but there is no indication that the copied sites allow free use. Images are considered to be copyright unless explicitly stated otherwise. There are ways to donate copyrighted images to Wikipedia, as described here; please note that simply asserting on the talk page that you are the owner of the copyright, or you have permission to use the image, isn't sufficient. For example, File:Peripheral Vision.jpg and others are claimed as free to use, when they are clearly not. That image appears here marked Copyright © 2006-2018 by ArtSlant, Inc. All images and content remain the © of their rightful owners.. I'm also surprised that art from as recently as 1962 is claimed as PD
  • If you have a conflict of interest when editing this article, you must declare it.
  • Not a reason for deletion, but it's better to put your art images in gallery format rather than a vertical list.

In principle, I might restore the text, suitably cleaned up, to a draft, but there's no point in doing so unless you can find independent third party sources. Please let me know if you can do so and wish me to proceed Jimfbleak - talk to me? 11:19, 9 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Jimfbleak Thanks for the informative reply. I can't recall items on the page well enough to go point-by-point, but I do think it is worth salvaging rather than beginning fresh. In terms of notability, there are piles of 3rd party sources that I can reference. Some examples include:

https://artsandculture.google.com/partner/barjeel-art-foundation https://www.theartnewspaper.com/barjeel-art-foundation https://hyperallergic.com/262346/in-a-time-of-displacement-arab-artists-negotiate-the-meaning-of-home/ https://www.forbesmiddleeast.com/en/re-orient-barjeel-art-foundations-sixth-exhibition-investigates-modernism-in-the-arab-world-from-the-1950s-1970s/ https://www.cntraveler.com/stories/2013-03-26/photos-el-seed-tunisian-graffiti-artist-painitings-calligraphy-street-art https://www.thenational.ae/arts-culture/art/major-exhibition-of-arab-art-from-the-barjeel-foundation-opens-in-paris-1.42025

I'm a little confused as to why the owner of a photograph or the owner of copyright is not allowed to use a photo here. I will look into it some more though and correct it for the reworked version of the page.

The problem is that although the images are claimed to be free to use here, they are also posted elsewhere with a non-free licence. Since we can't verify your identity, we need clarity for legal reasons. If the images were posted here first with a free licence, we need to be able to verify that the other site used them later with the wrong licence. if they were copied from the other site, they need their copyright status made clear on that site Jimfbleak - talk to me? 12:57, 9 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I don't disagree that the page needed work, though I guess I would have hoped that after it was considered ok by many editors over the years, rather than a rapid deletion, you would have instead chosen to add the "This page has numerous issues, Help improve this page" banner that is on some pages.

It's astonishing that it survived so long without proper references, but it seems to have been a low traffic article with a handful of significant contributors, also the notability rules have recently been tightened up Jimfbleak - talk to me? 12:57, 9 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

If it is possible to restore the page to a draft that I can work on that would be appreciated. I'm not exactly sure the best way but maybe I can use some of the material in the original and work on the new page in my sandbox, then copy it over.

thanks again Cmclean74 (talk) 12:19, 9 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I've interpolated a couple of responses in your text above, I hope that's OK. I've restored as Draft:Barjeel Art Foundation. I've removed all the external links, proper in-line references is what you need. I've left the text for now, and also the images to give you a chance to clarify their status. Jimfbleak - talk to me? 12:57, 9 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Jimfbleak thanks for the info and input as well as for restoring the article to a draft. I'll find some time in the near future to try to put it into a form more in line with wikipedia standards. Would you happen to have any exceptionally good examples of articles (about museums or not) that I could look to for inspiration?

thanks again for your help Cmclean74 (talk) 13:54, 9 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

You could try Wikipedia:Good articles/Art and architecture#Museums and galleries, no idea how well maintained they are, also WP:FA is a higher standard, but the two museums listed are somewhat... specialised Jimfbleak - talk to me? 18:57, 9 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
