March flowers[edit]

story · music · places

in memory of the birthday of a friend who showed me art such as this, and of Vami --Gerda Arendt (talk) 14:21, 7 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Rossini's Petite messe solennelle was premiered on 14 March 1864, - when I listen to the desolate Agnus Dei I think of Vami. - Also travelling, in the country where the flowers grow and I met some great cats! Just wait ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 22:57, 14 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Gerda Arendt: - Returned home last night and just getting caught up... music, flowers, cats, and those who are gone. Safe travels, my friend. --Rosiestep (talk) 13:36, 15 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Travels were safe and wonderful! Returned early morning, and finally managed first day of Madeira pics, with a cat, also with some red like yours today! I'll try to upload one day per day, the next two sets are assembled, you can look forward to three cats around a fish. Actually the fish was already dead and on a plate, and the cats were on the stony beach, and looking closer one is pictured twice. (There were four in waiting ...) - Don't miss today's composer story, with an opera trailer. I briefly and per chance met the composer during intermission of that wild piece. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 16:21, 20 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Welcome back, Gerda. Can I just say that this steak tatare is exquisite. Do you recall what wine was paired with it? (Also, I did notice the nice black and white cat by the red hydrant. For some unknown reason, I've been noticing and including a lot of cat photos by red objects this week, we we are in sync!) --Rosiestep (talk) 17:00, 20 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you - next day, around Porto da Cruz, with the 2 or 3 cats, - on Bach's birthday --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:27, 21 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
ps: the wine I ordered was a Rauenthaler Steinmächer, a dry Riesling, their No. 1 meaning the simplest one. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:32, 21 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Gerda Arendt, I will order it! BTW, love your photos -- again. I have plans for 2 of them over the weekend; keep an eye on things around here. ;) --Rosiestep (talk) 14:34, 22 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
thank you ;) - I uploaded 18 more pics from the next day, with a cat, - forgot that I'll have to make the selection for the rest which is the most difficult thing --Gerda Arendt (talk) 15:39, 22 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
a few new pics, and two people for DYK --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:34, 26 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Lovely photos, Gerda. Maybe someday our travels will cross and we'll have just enough time for a cup of coffee at a little outdoor cafe like this. What interesting stories we might share, including DYKs, past and present. Rosiestep (talk) 13:30, 27 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
That would be lovely! - hint, hint: probably the same places in January and March, no idea abot that roadside cafe though - 5 hours stopover is to long to do nothing and to short to do something and tiring both ways. (The more convenient flight was cancelled.) - Also: vacation is real when I don't think and talk of DYK ;) - A few pics added to the same day: a calf in the mist and chocolate cake, and a story of collaboration --Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:54, 27 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
A new day of pics, with a goat, and two cats, both pictured twice, especially for you! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 22:54, 28 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Acknowledging translation of page from German Wikipedia[edit]

I am working on a page on John Toner (see [1]). I started from the German page, translated it using Google translation, and then edited it adding additional information and rephrasing some of the translated page. How do I properly acknowledge the fact I started with a translation of the German page? Mvitulli (talk) 22:38, 19 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Mvitulli, and thanks for stopping by. I am glad to know that you are translating from one language Wikipedia into EN-WP. There are so many articles that would qualify for that work, and I find it to be so rewarding.
 • I'll start with a friendly reminder that the translated article needs to meet the policies of EN-WP, e.g., WP:N, WP:RS, and so forth. So, regarding the John Joseph Toner biography in your sandbox5, I noticed that a couple of paragraphs don't have inline citations. Theoretically, someone might want to delete them for that reason. Best practice is for the translator to find reliable sources to support the unsourced content when doing a translation; OR, don't include the unsourced paragraph on EN-WP.
 • With each edit you save, the edit summary should be in accordance with: Help:Translation. This is to say that, in the example of Mr. Toner, each save that includes translation would have the following edit summary: Content in this edit is translated from the existing German Wikipedia article at de:John Toner (Physiker); see its history for attribution..
 • On Mr. Toner's talkpage, you would add, underneath the WikiProjects: de
In 2023, I did a lot of translations from FR-WP and ES-WP (you can view them on my list of articles created in 2023). By way of example, see Fanny Clar; that article's Edit Summaries are viewable here and its talkpage translation note is viewable here. Hope all of this is clear and helpful, but I'd be happy to answer other questions if you wish. --Rosiestep (talk) 00:32, 20 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I provided similar explanations on MLG's talk page. As it looks to me as if the draft is ready for mainspace, I have suggested that the move would be a good opportunity to mention the translation in the edit comment. But as you suggest, it would be useful to add citations to the paragraphs in question, e.g. using this APS source. It seems to me that some of the sources already included could also be re-cited in this connection. I would be happy to take care of the move if Mvitulli would like me to do so.--Ipigott (talk) 09:18, 20 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, Ipigott. cc: Mvitulli and Megalibrarygirl. --Rosiestep (talk) 15:52, 20 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you both, Rosiestep and Ipigott! I knew you would know exactly what to do. :) Megalibrarygirl (talk) 18:05, 20 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I am ready to publish the page for John Toner. I should have acknowledged the translation from the German page right from the beginning but I didn't know how. I have another dilemma or two. I don't remember how to disambiguate a person's name. My sandbox5 originally contained the draft of the article for Paul Grobstein. I deleted the content of that page and started the page for John Toner. So the history contains all the edits I made on the Grobstein page. I would like to just copy the source for the page for Toner into a new page and acknowledge the translation from the beginning. But this version of the page greatly differs from the original German page. Advice? Mvitulli (talk) 20:38, 20 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Mvitulli, hmm. I understand the dilemma regarding the Grobstein edits in User:Mvitulli/sandbox5 which predate the Toner edits, and that you want the move to John Toner (physicist) to only reflect the Toner edits. Give me a minute to think on it. Also, other admins may weigh in on this. A good learning moment in multiple ways.
Also, a friendly FYI: the DE-WP article you translated from is this de:John Toner (Physiker) and not this de:John Joseph Toner. --Rosiestep (talk) 21:37, 20 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Drmies and CambridgeBayWeather: as you've been admins longer than me, wondering if you have suggestions regarding the best way of handling this move? Thanks. --Rosiestep (talk) 21:37, 20 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for heads up on correct title of German page. I will wait until I have a better description of Toner's research with reliable references before I publish. Please don't move the page for me. I'm not ready but I'll take whatever advice is offered. Mvitulli (talk) 22:53, 20 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
You want the second stage of the sandbox to "become" the new article? I suppose we could delete the whole thing, restore the Grobstein edits, merge those into the Grobstein article, then restore the other edits, than move that to the new Toner article--but I wonder if that's worth it--to remove a few draft edits from a history? Or move the whole thing when it's done and then just delete the first couple edits and just leave them in the black hole? Perhaps CambridgeBayWeather has a better idea. In general, and for future reference, it's so much easier to call a draft "Paul Grobstein" instead of "sandbox 5", and when you're done, just move the whole thing. Drmies (talk) 02:58, 21 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Mvitulli, don't worry; we won't do anything but carry on a discussion here. Drmies, as usual, thank you. --Rosiestep (talk) 03:48, 21 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
For what it's worth (as a contributor without admin status or experience), I would simply suggest that when the article is moved to mainspace, the edit comment should read: "This article has been based on translations of the German article John Toner (Physiker) over the past two years." Further explanations could then be given on the talk page (perhaps with a link to these discussions). That would prevent any deletion of content and would cover any remaining attribution problems, Almost every day I come across translations of articles from other language versions of Wikipedia without any reference to translation at the time of creation. Although I constantly draw attention to the need to follow requirements, many of them exist for months or years without any further action. Recognition of drawing on the German Toner article along the lines I suggest should be quite sufficient.--Ipigott (talk) 06:46, 21 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Delete all revisions before this using "Attribution and translation acknowledgement. Will restore shortly" as the reason. Then move the sandbox to Draft:John Toner (physicist) with "Translated from the German version :de:John Toner (Physiker)] vis Google Traslate and later updated. After the move restore th Paul Grobstein edits of the sandbox. Should work. If necessary apologise (apologize). Ipigott, Drmies, Mvitulli. CambridgeBayWeather (solidly non-human), Uqaqtuq (talk), Huliva 15:29, 21 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

CambridgeBayWeather, ditto, as usual, thank you! --Rosiestep (talk) 18:32, 21 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks everyone. I moved (copied and pasted) the article from my Sandbox5 to Draft:John Toner (physicist). After making more corrections and adding references I moved the article to the mainspace. I'm not sure how to delete all revisions before I starting working on John Toner in my Sandbox5. I don't need to keep any of the work on Paul Grobstein in my Sandbox5 because the article on Grobstein was published quite a while ago. Is there a way to delete a sandbox or would you advise against that? I have other sandboxes that I no longer need because I moved the article to the mainspace or copied and pasted what was in the sandbox to a new page in the mainspace. I never knew how to deal with the old sandboxes. Advice? Mvitulli (talk) 20:48, 21 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Mvitulli, first, thanks for writing the article! I see it here: John Toner (physicist). Unfortunately, a cut/paste is not the correct process as the outcome lacks the edit history left behind here: User:Mvitulli/sandbox5. The correct process is to move the article. I think as long as you don't delete sandbox5 (okay to delete the contents and leave a simple statement that it contains the edit history regarding Grobstin and Toner), it'll be okay in case).
Sandbox: Regarding new articles started in sandbox, a good naming convention is this: subject's name, e.g. Doe Poe (pianist) or even User:Mvitulli/JDP.
Thanks for what you do around here; appreciate it. And don't worry if you don't know all the policies, processes, tips and tricks; no one knows all of them. So helping each other is our thing. ;) --Rosiestep (talk) 23:53, 21 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Ethics Workshop Participation Request[edit]

Hi! We're conducting a series of participatory workshops with Wikipedia editors, administrators, researchers, and Wikimedia employees to discuss, and hopefully improve, Wikipedia's structures for online research (see meta research page). In an effort to get the right people in the room to discuss these topics, I'm reaching out here to see if you are interested in participating as an active administrator. We'd work with you to ensure this workshop can fit into your schedule, but are targeting end of April/early May. I'm happy to discuss any of these topics further here or on our talk page. Zentavious (talk) 17:12, 27 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, guessing you're probably on the other side of the world and super busy with some wiki event, but if you feel like it, see if you can find more on it in the newspaper resources. Remembering that we did the Waldorf stuff together and the hotel was opposite it. No worries if busy! ♦ Dr. Blofeld 14:25, 28 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Dr. Blofeld. I remember working on the Waldorf with you; that was a fun project. I looked at newspapers.com for Belmont Plaza Hotel and also Glass Hat Club, but all that I found were mentions of people who had frequented one or the other, vs. articles about them. :( Nonetheless, glad that you created it and would be happy to work on other defunct NY hotels. --Rosiestep (talk) 22:30, 28 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
