- Is someone having a laugh? The name is a tribute to Denis Compton and Bill Edrich, two famous Middlesex and England cricketers of the mid-20th century. They were frequently hailed as a "double act" because of the number of times they shared high-scoring partnerships, most notably in the 1947 English cricket season. There have been numerous celebrated partnerships in cricket like Hirst & Rhodes; Hobbs & Sutcliffe; Lindwall & Miller; Ramadhin & Valentine; Walcott, Weekes & Worrell (the "Three Ws"); Statham & Trueman; Lillee & Thomson; and plenty of others. Are you saying that Laurel & Hardy would be disqualified, or Morecambe & Wise? Looks to me like this site likes its rules and some of them are just plain stupid.
- If the ampersand is such a big deal, then I guess a change of name is the best option because I suppose a new account will mean losing my edits to date. Let me know what you want me to do. Compton & Edrich (talk) 19:13, 12 January 2018 (UTC)

- @Nihonjoe: your compassion and common sense are much appreciated. I am what is apparently called a WP:NEWBIE here and I had moreorless decided that Wikipedia is a bad idea, but you have restored my faith. I see that you are a genuine administrator and not a self-appointed one which, on here as it certainly does in real life, makes all the difference. In real life, incidentally, I am a senior manager responsible for leading and looking after a team of eighteen people (and doing 18 annual appraisals in March!). The way to motivate them and so meet and exceed targets is by treating them as people with compassion and common sense, as you have done here, based on trust and acting in good faith at all times. Nitpicking, carping criticisms, suspicion, making petty points and running off to report are bang out of order. As you have rightly said, the collective actions of theinstantmatrix amount to WP:BADFAITH. I am perfectly happy to answer any polite enquiry about the name as, obviously, Messrs Compton & Edrich are only famous in the countries where cricket is a major sport. Denis Compton, I should say, was one of the greatest players of all time and would certainly be included in any all-time England team. To be honest, Bill Edrich was good but not actually great (in fact, he had a nephew John Edrich who was one of the greats).

- I suspect Theinstantmatrix was not acting in bad faith. Your username (without the explanation you gave) does give the appearance of an account for two people. However, because of the explanation you gave (which I would recommend placing on your user page), it makes perfect sense and is acceptable. You would not believe how many accounts we get that are set up to be used by more than one person, and if you work in that area, it can get to where you don't always see other possibilities.
