Categories/subcategories[edit]

You wrote:

I've noticed that you have contributed to many of the Michigan-themed articles, many of which I have likewise connected myself. For these and other reasons you seem to be an appropriate person to whom I might direct my question.

My question concerns the relationship between sub-categories and categories, or more specifically, articles tagged with a sub-category and its relationship to the parent category. If, for example, I tag an article with the sub-category People from Saginaw, Michigan will that article also appear automatically on the page for the parent category People from Michigan or should I also add a category tag for the parent category?

If you could provide me with some guidance in this matter, I would be grateful.

This is a very murky area of categorization, involving several lengthy discussions on various pages including Wikipedia talk:Categorization/Categories and subcategories, Wikipedia talk:Categorization, and Wikipedia talk:Category. Wikipedia:Categorization/Categories and subcategories is the most succinct distillation of current practices.

Regarding the specific situation you mention, my personal opinion is that persons should only be in the lower level category (unless they truly have some notability that rises to state-wide significance--though of course there are many cases in which there are no appropriate subcategory, so these would also go into the parent category). Regarding your question, articles in a subcategory, such as Category:People from Saginaw, Michigan do not automatically appear in the parent category. The subcategory appears on the parent category--but, due to a quirk in WikiMedia software, the subcategories are alpha-sorted in the same way as the articles in the parent category. What this means is that categories containing many articles, a subcategory may not show up on the first page of the parent category--a reader needs to scroll to a subsequent page to see the subcategory to be able to drill down into the subcat. olderwiser 16:43, 25 June 2006 (UTC)

Orphaned non-free media (Image:City of Saginaw Seal.PNG)[edit]

Nuvola apps important blue.svg Thanks for uploading Image:City of Saginaw Seal.PNG. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BetacommandBot 13:56, 24 September 2007 (UTC)

Fair use rationale for Image:Delta College.PNG[edit]

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:Delta College.PNG. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. NOTE: once you correct this, please remove the tag from the image's page. License for Image:Former Saginaw Post Office (Now Castle Museum)).png[edit]

Your Image:Former Saginaw Post Office (Now Castle Museum)).png
Move to commons representation

The image Former Saginaw Post Office (Now Castle Museum)).png is a candidate to be copied to the Wikimedia Commons. When you uploaded this image, you licensed it for use under the GNU Free Documentation License (GFDL). On behalf of the Wikipedia and Commons communities, thank you.

You also chose a license tag which adds disclaimers to the GFDL. As explained at Wikipedia:GFDL standardization, these disclaimers cause certain re-use problems that make the GFDL less free than it could be.

Before I copy this image to the Commons, I wanted to ask whether you would be willing to remove the disclaimers from your GFDL tag. No one other than you may legally alter the license. If you do choose to modify the license on this image, I respectfully recommend any of the following best-practices license tags:

You are under no obligation whatsoever to alter the license. Doing so merely cooperates with those members of the community who believe that disclaimers in individual media are undesirable. Wikipedia consensus still allows GFDL licenses with disclaimers, as does the Commons.

Whether or not you choose to remove the disclaimers, thank you for your consideration.

Please also see Wikipedia:Copyrights and Wikipedia:Moving images to the Commons for more information.
This message was placed using Template:License disclaimer notice.

Unreferenced BLPs[edit]

Information.svg Hello CrazyElk! Thank you for your contributions. I am a bot alerting you that 1 of the articles that you created is tagged as an Unreferenced Biography of a Living Person. The biographies of living persons policy requires that all personal or potentially controversial information be sourced. In addition, to ensure verifiability, all biographies should be based on reliable sources. If you were to bring this article up to standards, it would greatly help us with the current 2,768 article backlog. Once the article is adequately referenced, please remove the {{unreferencedBLP}} tag. Here is the article:

  1. Carl M. Williams - Find sources: "Carl M. Williams" – news · newspapers · books · scholar · HighBeam · JSTOR · free images · free news sources · The Wikipedia Library · NYT · WP reference

Proposed deletion of List of city managers of Saginaw, Michigan[edit]

Ambox warning yellow.svg

The article List of city managers of Saginaw, Michigan has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Unreferenced list that consists almost entirely of redlinks. Notability is an issue too.

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. ...William 23:24, 5 February 2013 (UTC)

ArbCom elections are now open![edit]

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page.
