IP editors at Marinid dynasty

Relevant information on Ioeth's talk page, whom originally semi-protected the articles Marinid dynasty, Almoravid dynasty, Almohad caliphate and Saadi dynasty. I promoted the first 3 to full protection due to an auto-confirmed editor edit-warring, and the 2 IPs have been reverting each other across some (or all) of those pages. See Special:Contributions/87.217.107.3 and Special:Contributions/78.251.223.62 for evidence. I think I'm doing something wrong. I've tried this on several articles and it never changes anything. I see the tab at the top with a dash and click on it. It opens the article in edit mode, I hit save page and nothing has changed. What's wrong? Or did every article I pick have no fixes needed? Hi Dabomb. Can we use a different image for Numerical weather prediction's blurb? The current image is from a ocean wave model, which uses NWP data, but is not the best example of NWP per se. I mostly prefer politicians who are safely dead. My few living subjects have, I have gathered, not been terribly happy at their articles (I think Antonin Scalia vetoed the Supreme Court's release of photographs, in any event they became notably less cooperative after checking with "chambers". And Vicki Cole, as she once was,of "Bring Us Together" expired fame was very sarcastic with me when I offered her the pictures I had gotten from the Nixon Library. Oh well.) To business, not sure you noticed my reply to your comment on my talk here; nominators are not instructed to adjust the summary chart. Some do, some don't. I think the rationale for the instruction (I'd have to poke through the archives to be sure) was fear of having the chart screwed up. Obviously if you feel there's a problem, it might be wise to reconsider. Screwups like Casliber's cause us momentary amusement because it's a well-known editor, and he is not going to take offense (I hope!), but I can see that if it was someone else, we could have a flareup. On balance, I'd ask nominators to adjust the chart, recognizing they may do so badly from time to time. That way, if we see a flareup, at least it will be because someone didn't follow instructions (their fault) instead of because of instructions being followed (our fault, in some editors eyes).--Wehwalt (talk) 09:28, 14 August 2011 (UTC)

My comment was more borne out of temporary frustration than out of desire for change; I don't really mind the current instructions. Even if we did require that nominators update the summary chart, most wouldn't due to forgetfulness or ignorance of the rules, in which case regulars would end up taking care of the chart anyway. Em dashes

Sorry to inform you, em-dashes are spaced in normal typography. The only place where this practice is apparently not followed is on Wikipedia, where the blind lead the blind and no one bothers taking a course in typing or "keyboarding" as it is now called, or referring to any of the numerous books on style that have existed for a century before the World Wide Web was invented. There are good technical reasons for this, based on how various browsers handle certain characters for the purposes of line wrapping and visual clarity. — Quicksilver^{T @} 05:24, 17 August 2011 (UTC)

Dear Hydrargyruml, it's true that some US house styles call for spaced em dashes as sentence interruptors (even newspapers with short columns, amazingly, where wrapping is a big problem); but many Americans use spaced en dashes or unspaced em dashes, both of which are quite common elsewhere. WP has come to the decision that spaced em dashes—in the fonts we use—are just one step too visually disruptive in normal prose; as weill, they are not generally used by a third of English-speakers. My standard answer applies, as always. Awards Daily doesn't look good, based on their FAQs ("Is Awards Daily owned by any parent company? No. It was built by Sasha Stone, me, who started it as Oscarwatch back in 1999. It later became Awards Daily after she (I) was sued for copyright infringement."), which indicates that it's a site created by a hobbyist. Please wait at least four or five days before re-nominating. Your FLC was just one of many I had to archive due to lack of reviews. There were so many stale FLCs lacking support that reviewers were overburdened and spread thin, meaning that many nominations (including yours) did not receive adequate attention; if I allowed nominators to bring them back again that wouldn't help anything. You can help by doing some FLC reviews yourself, which helps keep the backlog down, increaing the chances that enough reviewers will take a look at any of your future nominations. Unprotecting Sanskrit?

I just made various changes to this article. You last semi-protected it, restoring it back to previous semi-protection put in place by Dabachmann some 3 years ago due to a single incident then. I'm not affected by semi-protection but I wonder why we need it at all. Doesn't seem to make sense to keep it indefinitely protected just because of that. Benwing (talk) 09:22, 29 August 2011 (UTC)

That article was part of the pending changes trial. After the trial I restored the article's previous protection settings regardless of what I thought of them. I see that you have asked Dbachmann (talk · contribs · blocks · protections · deletions · page moves · rights · RfA) to unprotect as well; since he was the admin who put in the indef semi-protection, it's best that he decide whether it is still needed or not.
