Feliz Día de Reyes[edit]

Los Tres Reyes Magos/The three Wise Men

I would like to share with my three best friends in Wikipedia, David Cannon, Linuxbeak and Brookie a Puerto Rican Christian tradition and wish you three a "Happy Dia de Reyes", a celebration that we still celebrate in Puerto Rico every January 6. The night before the children of the island fill a little box with grass for the kings camel and place it under the Christmas tree. When they wake up the following day, they find the box empty and gifts left by the kings God Bless You all Tony the Marine 05:00, 6 January 2006 (UTC)

HólLmfríður Karlsdóttir[edit]

Hi, I'm on the french wikipedia but i just saw on the english version that the article of Hóllmfríður Karlsdóttir is has a mistake on the title : Hólmfríður Karlsdóttir could you rename it please (i just opened that account on the english version but i can't do it yet) Thanks :). Patriksson 13:44, 21 January 2006 (UTC)

Yes it's a spelling mistake, her name is Hóllmfríður Karlsdóttir but the title of the article is Hólmfríður Karlsdóttir

Rotuma Day, 2005 (or any other year)[edit]

Exactly why do we have to have an overview of the celebration for every year? I don't see us doing that at Independence Day (United States) or Waitangi Day or anywhere else for that matter.

doesn't seem encyclopaedic to me, seems like the sort of thing that should get put in wikinews.

your views?

--Xorkl000 06:40, 22 January 2006 (UTC)

The above goes for the year by year articles for fiji week (Fiji Week, 2004, Fiji Week, 2004), and Ratu Sir Lala Sukuna Day, 2005, i'm not a fan of any of these articles --Xorkl000 07:02, 22 January 2006 (UTC)
i think that Fiji Week 2004 is probably a sensible article to keep, as you rightly point out the events around it were a bit more notable than usual.--Xorkl000 12:39, 22 January 2006 (UTC)

Talk:Barnaby Joyce[edit]

G'day David,

I appreciate your statement that you'd restrain yourself from using your admin powers to circumvent protection, but I don't think the <POV> tags you added in the same edits did much for the cause of civility. fuddlemark (fuddle me!) 06:41, 24 January 2006 (UTC)

Hi David! :)[edit]

Yes, i was here just passing by when i noticed the italian lunatic doing the duke of braganza trick again. Will he ever quit?? I'm very much ok, my non-wiki life is going great, my wiki-life is as fun as always. We are indeed about to jump to 6 figures - we are even preparing a special logo!... I'll let you know when it happens. Cheers, muriel@pt 09:02, 25 January 2006 (UTC)

Turaga na Ravunisa[edit]

I agree, its pretty bad. Its supposed to be about a lomaloma title but goes on about the yavusaratu and the vunivalu most of the time. I can't speak that much as to factual accuracy but structurally its buggered, it really should be moved to some thing like History of Bau or something like that. Do i have the time? Not this week unfortunately.--Xorkl000 13:00, 27 January 2006 (UTC)

Messianic Judaism Lock[edit]

If you're claiming to be fair, then you should also keep the alert tag that lets the reader know there's a controversy being sorted out here.KnessetP.R.Guy 12:57, 29 January 2006 (UTC)

I agree. I shouldn't have removed that. That was a mistake. David Cannon 12:59, 29 January 2006 (UTC)

Messianic Judaism Continued Problems[edit]

David, you have effectively shut down hopes for this article to have an NPOV. 1. You softened the alert from questioning the neutrality AND factual accuracy to simply a neutrality alert. 2. You reverted the article to a version that mostly questions the integrity of Messianic Judaism. Why would OpenInfo or Eliezer want to engage in refining the article to something other than the present version that 99% of the visitors to the article see? I was working on an article that would have presented the different views of Messianic Judaism. I would have had no problems with others respectfully editing my version in a good faith effort to create an unbiased article. You reverted it to express a radical Orthodox Jewish view that delegitimizes Messianic Jewish expression. What will be your long-term plan if nobody presents an acceptable article on the talk page? I have to admit that I am very skeptical that your method will work and not sure I would want to keep wasting my time and energy trying to make Wikipedia a better place if my efforts only ever get silenced.KnessetP.R.Guy 15:37, 29 January 2006 (UTC)

Please adjudicate on weasel words in Jonathan Sarfati article[edit]

Mr Cannon, please have a look at Talk:Jonathan Sarfati. It seems that Agapetos_Angel has meticulously documented the fact that a whole section violates the Wiki rules on avoiding weasel words and the requirement for verifiable content. AA's opponents seem to be resorting to mob rule rather than addressing the arguments, and certain sysops have banned AA unjustifiably. 220.245.180.133 01:35, 31 January 2006 (UTC)

Replying here because the anonymous user has no identifiable talk page: I have to be very, very careful with this article. If you look through the early edit history, you'll see that a substantial portion of the original article was written by me. Therefore, I cannot "adjudicate" because I would have a conflict of interest. When some of the dust has settled, I will do a bit of cleaning up if required, but I dare not use my powers as an administrator to impose my will in an article that is largely mine. That would be a violation of policy. I think you'd better find a neutral administrator - one who's had nothing much to do with the article. David Cannon 09:12, 31 January 2006 (UTC)
I understand, thanx. 220.245.180.133 05:22, 1 February 2006 (UTC)

Lau Islands revert[edit]

Why, if I might be so bold, did you see fit to revert my edit? You'll notice, meanwhile, that I've undone your revert. Tomertalk 09:45, 5 February 2006 (UTC)

Enough with the pointless reverts. The high island article quite clearly indicates the geological nature of the islands. Since all pelagic islands in the Pacific are of volcanic origin, whether high or low, I still feel my edit is "correcter". Tomertalk 10:24, 5 February 2006 (UTC)
You're going to "keep reverting" me? That's a pretty pathetic attitude, especially in light of the fact that I've only made one edit you've seen fit to revert. That said, you seem to have a fundamental misunderstanding of the purpose of the English Wikipedia. It is an encyclopedia, not a mud-puddle of miscongenated information. If this discussion were taking place on the simple: wikipedia rather than on en:, I'd be more inclined to go along with your ideas of how things should be "dumbed-down" for the simpletons in the crowd. Regards, Tomertalk 10:49, 5 February 2006 (UTC)
BTW, in case you didn't catch on, I'm more than just a little bit insulted by your pontificatory assertion that I "invented" the distinction between high and low islands—hence my defensive tone. Tomertalk 10:53, 5 February 2006 (UTC)
Please review WP:OWN. Meanwhile, to clarify what I'm talking about when distinguishing between simple: vs. en:, in simple:, a pronunciation guide for the name of the country as FEE-jee would perhaps be acceptable, while anything less "scholarly" than [ˈfi·dʒi] is unacceptable by the WP:MOS for en:. The high island article clearly defines what a high island is, as does the low island article, albethey both stubs. Feeling "protective" of articles is fine, IMHO, but dismissing improvements upon them out-of-hand simply because you happen to disagree with them on philosophical grounds, is not. Tomertalk 11:13, 5 February 2006 (UTC)

BTW, by point of clarification, I didn't pluck the assertion that you implied that I had invented the term "high island" out of thin air... to quote you, "Not everybody knows that all "high islands", as you call them, are volcanic." Granted, I added emphasis when quoting you, but I think you should be able to readily see whence I got the idea that you were asserting that I had invented the term or the distinction between high vs. low islands. That minor point aside, as I've said 3 times already, the high islands article clarifies, quite clearly, the volcanic origin of high islands. Tomertalk 11:19, 5 February 2006 (UTC)

Don't worry about it...I was in pretty bad need of sleep myself. I'll look at it again and see about rewording it into something we'll both approve of. Watch Talk:Lau Islands. Cheers, Tomertalk 02:27, 6 February 2006 (UTC)

Messianic Judaism Continued Problems[edit]

Are you going to do anything to enforce your instructions? Or are you going sit around in New Zealand being "fair" while militant counter missionaries slander Messianic Judaism and silence everyone and anyone who stands in their way? I would think you at least have an obligation to preserve the integrity of Wikipedia. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 85.65.219.226 (talkcontribs)

Replying here because you don't have an identifiable user talk page. The article in protection has been unprotected for quite some time now. I will allow some space for a cooling-off period. Please try to work for a consensus on the talk page. I will NOT take part in the discussion, but will check any consensus version for POV. I'm trying to remain as dispassionate as possible - as I've said, I'm a Messianic sympathizer, but cannot be seen to be taking sides. David Cannon 00:46, 18 February 2006 (UTC)

David, below is my response to Eliezer. I believe it is the only solution that will work.85.65.219.226 06:43, 19 February 2006 (UTC)

However I removed the caveat tag to try to come to a compromise. --Eliezer | £€åV€ m€ å m€§§åg€ 02:39, 19 February 2006 (UTC)

This is not much of a compromise when none of the blatant factual inaccuracies raised in section 23, 25, 29 and 30 of this discussion have been addressed. Anybody who does even the slightest research into most "facts" in this article will find them to be embarrassingly wrong and unfair to Messianic Judaism. Whenever somebody tries even the smallest adjustments to make this article unbiased and accurate, Eliezer rejects their changes and threatens to block them. I am more than willing to retain the services of a Conservative Jewish scholar who teaches at an accredited university. His expertise includes Messianic Judaism. Allow him to write an objective article that gives a neutral point of veiw. Then we should lock his version of the article against vandalism. Can we agree to that as a true compromise? 85.65.219.226 06:43, 19 February 2006 (UTC)

I'm prepared to give it a try. Go ahead. David Cannon 08:56, 19 February 2006 (UTC)
As Fred Bauder wrote on the talk page, "Retaining the services of a scholar then locking the article is not acceptable. We simply don't work that way." --Eliezer | £€åV€ m€ å m€§§åg€ 17:30, 19 February 2006 (UTC)

list of portuguese parties[edit]

I linked to the first edit of the user that I reverted without reading his correction, that edit removed the word fascist, but because he later wrote the word "fascist" again, my revert was stupid, it was something like an edit war due to my lack of attention. Image copyright problem with Image:Naylamoawad.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Naylamoawad.jpg. However, the image may soon be deleted unless we can determine the copyright holder and copyright status. The Wikimedia Foundation is very careful about the images included in Wikipedia because of copyright law (see Wikipedia's Copyright policy).

The copyright holder is usually the creator, the creator's employer, or the last person who was transferred ownership rights. Copyright information on images is signified using copyright templates. The three basic license types on Wikipedia are open content, public domain, and fair use. Find the appropriate template in Wikipedia:Image copyright tags and place it on the image page like this: {{TemplateName}}.

Please signify the copyright information on any other images you have uploaded or will upload. Remember that images without this important information can be deleted by an administrator.

This is an automated notice by OrphanBot. If you have questions about copyright tagging of images, post on Wikipedia talk:Image copyright tags or User talk:Carnildo/images. 22:55, 23 February 2006 (UTC)

Color on Multilingual monthly statistics[edit]

I was wondering if you would consider changing the color you're using on Wikipedia:Multilingual monthly statistics to indicate decreased article counts. Magenta is a little too dark, IMO. Image Tagging Image:Nawaikula.jpg[edit]

Warning sign
This media may be deleted.

Thanks for uploading Image:Nawaikula.jpg. I notice the 'image' page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is therefore unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use {{GFDL-self}} to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media qualifies as fair use, please read fair use, and then use a tag such as {{Non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other media, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. you following this at all? --Xorkl000 13:57, 6 March 2006 (UTC)

ýes its quite absurd. VLRA was originally just a pressure group designed to get more money out of the tourist industry for landowners, and i actually thought it had quite a sensible and reasonable agenda. It has no relationship to the BLV except in that there would be some overlapping membership. Fiji islands[edit]

Hello, I am still working on czech version of Fiji articles. Now I found problem with template translation. Just dropping in[edit]

Hi David, how are you? I never forget my friends so, I just wanted to check on you. I've been writing some articles in regard to the immigration of people to Puerto Rico since I wanted to know why my family immigrated from Corsica to the island. Here are some of my immigration articles: Corsican immigration to Puerto Rico, French immigration to Puerto Rico, German immigration to Puerto Rico, African immigration to Puerto Rico, Puerto Rican immigration to Hawaii and Puerto Rican migration to New York. I started with one and ended up writing a series. Well take care and may God bless you and your lovely family. Tony the Marine 05:17, 14 April 2006 (UTC)

The bias of David Cannon[edit]

Mr. Cannon, I find that your edits on articles relating to Lebanese topics are severely biased. I urge you to do a lot more study and reseach before posting on the Wikipedia since it is better to have no information than to have slanted information. I wouldn't it mind so much if your writings were about topics relating to nature or animals. But when you write erroneous and biased information about Lebanese parties and living individuals, you need to be 100% sure of your information since otherwise you could be doing harm to those parties or individuals. I have also noticed that you paste information without providing its source or reference. If you are truly a born-again Christian then the Truth and the Word should be among your top values. I urge you to respect these ideals and reflect them in your work.

PS: Robert Fisk is a self-serving, money worshipping minion. I would appreciate it if you use better sources.

I have never quoted Robert Fisk as a source. That source was added by somebody else. Besides, I have never knowingly tried to "spin" an article positively or negatively - I try to state all the FACTS, both positive AND negative, that I know about. If there's things I don't know, others can add them - that's what Wikipedia is all about. It would also be appreciated if you would nail your colours to the mast by identifying yourself, as I do. What third parties wish to "claim" him as is immaterial and wholly ahumanistic; everyone, including Senator Yulee, has the right to make his own determinations as to his own beliefs and personal identification. He To say otherwise displays a non-neutral point of view. He was not a "Jewish senator," because he changed his religion at the time of his marriage. He called himself an Anglican and his personal beliefs were in step with Anglicanism, so therefore he was an Anglican. The statement I included, that he was the first senator to at one time have practiced Judaism, was far more accurate, and I respectfully request that it be changed back. 65.28.2.218 13:24, 11 July 2006 (UTC)

Please be reasonable[edit]

Angela Beesley AfD'ed her own year-old biography of herself. Why? Because she does not want people to see this video, because she is a little nervous in it, or something. OK, fine, so she got her article about herself taken out. However, Daniel Brandt, who does not want an article about himself, has to put up with his because these children say: Aha! I can annoy this adult. Nail him. Flo is less notable than Angela. Angela has been high visibilty and is an executive within Wikia. Now she gets to disappear AND display the hypocrisy of saying: "Oh! But not my friend, Florence!" This is not fair. It is not consistent. It demonstrates much about what is wrong with Wikiepdia. How it lacks objective standards and how it is failing to raise itself about the quality of typical American daytime TV: Oprah, games shows and Jerry Springer. -- 75.26.3.87 18:39, 14 July 2006 (UTC)

David, it's always nice to hear from you. I've been dealing with my wife's health problems. She was on a wheelchair due to problems with her spinal cord. But, thank God, with some medical treatments she is back to her normal self once again.

Anyway, today (Yesterday) I tell her "Let's go out to eat and take in a movie just you and me". Well we did, except that my son Antonio, my granddaughters Isabel and Nina, my daughter Nilda and her husband Nick, my other son Jose and his wife Heather and his stepchildren Christie and Logan went with us. What can I say! I love my family. God bless you and your family always. Your friend Tony the Marine 05:37, 13 August 2006 (UTC)

Hi David. You might like to get involved in the conversations at Wikipedia talk:Naming conventions (places) and Wikipedia talk:Naming conventions (city names). You can help to make sure that Fiji (or anywhere else) is properly represented. Naming conventions appropriate for one place are not always appropriate for other places, but we may not know if no-one tells us. Thanks. --Scott Davis Talk 12:33, 17 August 2006 (UTC)

Fair use images and templates[edit]

Greetings! Re your edit summary at [5] and similar: the rationale at {{Coatofarms}} is insufficient. That template is essentially a 'no license' template. There's been considerable debate regarding the very existence of that template, as its use creates a very muddled situation with regards to the copyright status of the image in question. In this particular case, we have no idea what the status of the image is, other than it is the coat of arms of Fiji. In such cases, we must presume that the image can only be used here under terms of our fair use policy. I've reverted your re-insertion of the image into the various templates. Please note that having the image on the templates serves a purely decorative purpose; such a use under fair use is not allowed. The usability of the template is in no way compromised by not having the fair use tagged image on it. I recommend you use Image:Flag of Fiji.svg in replacement where appropriate, as that image suffers no copyright concerns. If you have questions about this, I'd be happy to answer. All the best, --Durin 15:20, 17 August 2006 (UTC)

Please intervene in Jews for Jesus Article[edit]

Humus sapiens has been using his Administrative powers to forward his agenda of making the Jews for Jesus page a biased attack against the organization. He with the assistance of other editors hostile to Jews for Jesus, have added many statments that are designed to influence people against jews for jesus, adding tons of references to biased websites that do not meet the criteria for relable sources, and have reverted every attempt to make the article more neutral. I know its been your policy to err on the side of caution in dealing with Jewish objections to Jesus, but in this case intervention is clearly needed. Personally I lack the Wikipedia skills for dealing with his abuses of power, but I believe that he needs to be held accountable for his blatant violation of Wikipedia policy, an I ask you as an administrator to intervenme and bring this article into compliance with Wikipedia policy. I am requesting that you revert this article to the last version by Moishe Rosen and lock it until such time as you can get Humus Sapiens to agree to comply with Wikipedia policy or until there is some ruling by an authoritative Wikipedia body about what is appropriate for this article.

Fiji Hindi[edit]

Recently you have redirected a page on "Fiji Hindi" into "Fijian Hindustani". I believe this to be a totally wrong decision.

Firstly, contrary to your reference to the Fiji Constitution, there is no such Language as "Fijian Hindustani". The Fiji constitution does mention "Hindustani" as a language that can be used for official purposes. For your information this is a compromise between "Hindi" favoured bu the North Indian Hindus in Fiji and "Urdu" favoured by the Muslims. THe above three language variations are all formal forms of almost the same language and are also spoken in India.

Almost all Fiji Indians speak "Fiji Hindi". This language(or dialect) is unique to Fiji. Only recently have some people started wrting in "Fiji Hindi". You may be pleased to know that recently, the Bible was translated into Fiji Hindi.

You may want to search for "Fiji Hindi" and "Fiji Hindustani" on the internet to realise the correct term to use.

I have included below links to the Fiji Constitution and a travel guide explaining "Fiji Hindi"

Just one further point - the Fiji Constitution does not use the term "Indo-Fijian"

Fiji Hindi is not Hindustani[edit]

Hi David,

You are correct that the Fiji Constitution recognises Hindustani as a language that can be used for official purposes. Hindustani is used in Fiji on formal ocassions and is very different from Fiji Hindi. Hindustani, if spoken by a Fiji Indian, can be understood by other people of the Indian sub Continent who speak Hindi or Urdu or Hindustani. On the other hand, Fiji Hindi is the language spoken by the people of Indian origin in Fiji in their day-to-day conversation. Because Fiji Hindi has involved by the coming together of a number of North Indian dialects, with a liberal number of English and Fijian words, it is not comprehensible to Hindi (or Hindustani or Urdu) speakers in the sub-Continent.

Fiji Hindi had been compared to pidgin and creole languages. It was not until 1977, when the language was analysed by Professor Rodney F. Moag and a book written by him (Moag, Rodney F., Fiji Hindi: a basic course and reference grammar, Australian National University Press, Canberra)that people began to realise that Fiji Hindi was a language with structure and grammar of its own. Since then others have written about the language.

Despite this awareness, Fiji Hindi has not been taught in Fiji schools and is not used on religious or formal ocassions. Recently a few books have been witten in Fiji Hindi. The most notable of this (as I stated earlier ) is the Bible. The University of the South Pacific has only recently started offering courses in Fiji Hindi.

If you require any more information, to help you understand the differences, Please let me know.

A Fiji Indian

Writing in Fiji Hindi[edit]

Thank you for making an effort to understand the language of the Fiji Indians.

As I have stated earlier, it is only recently that efforts have been made to write in Fiji Hindi. So far Roman script has been used to write in Fiji Hindi. I do want to empahsise here that Fiji Hindi was looked down on by the Fiji Indian Religious and Political leaders and was for a long time referred to as Broken Hindi. In schools in Fiji, Hindu students learn to read and write in standard Hindi in the Devanagri script whereas in Muslim schools students learn to read and write in Urdu in Persian script ( almost same as Arabic script).

Fiji Indians speak to each other in Fiji Hindi (It is also used as the lingua franca in the districts of Fiji with large Indian majority) but rarely use it on formal ocassions. On religious ocassions standard Hindi or Urdu will be used but a politician adressing a meeting will use Hindustani.

Thank you for the work you have done on Fiji in Wikipedia. Perhaps at some stage we could also have a discussion on what to call people of Indian origin in Fiji. Indians in Fiji have long wanted to be called as Fijians but successive constitutions of Fiji always referred to them as Indians.

Queen of Fiji[edit]

Hi Davidcannon........much of what was on the above has been deleted as opinions. However it is a documented fact that Rabuka did indeed present a "soro" or whales tooth to her majesty the Queen in 1997 and when interviewed by the local papers at the time expressed his reason for doing so was to apologise for not only abruptly ending Fiji's union with the British crown but also breaking his oath of alligence to the Queen when as an officer of the Royal Fiji Forces lead the uprising in 1987. Maybe I worded it incorrectly but these are documented facts.

Also note in the local Fijian dialect, Queen Elizabeth is referred to as Na Ranadi Ilisapeci. As the recognised paramount chief of Fiji, as declared by the Great Council of Chiefs she therefore has claim to the title Tui Viti or King of Fiji, which was symboilically given to her ancestor Queen Victoria by the then Tui Viti, Ratu Seru Cakobau. The wording in the Deed of Cession further supports this claim, stating Queen Victoria's rights to Fiji and her succesive heirs for perpetuity.

Also note Fiji's government system is modelled on the Westminister system, the Great Council of Chiefs are therefore in fact similar in function to the House of Lords. Their position not suborninate as mentioned, as national bills have to gain the GCC's approval before becoming law. Contratry to what outsiders think the tradional hierachy is alive and well in Fiji and chiefs still wield a lot of power, even Mahendra Chaudrys standing in Ba has been boosted because of the Tui Ba's backing. I think its very hard from other former British colonies to comprehend why indigenous Fijians apprarently revere the British Royal Family, but if you have studied Fiji history one realises the Deed of Cession in 1874 essentially united independent chiefdoms under one banner, which we now know as Fiji. Fiji has been a republic for 19 years but isnt it funny that Fiji's mission in London is being directed by government to secure an official visit by the Queen to Fiji for the opening of the Great Council of Chiefs Building in the capital this year. If Fiji was pro republic we would have the president, who is a high chief himself open it instead

In regard to retaining the affection of the Fijian people. It is interesting to note that the small turn out in Australia and New Zealand during Prince Charles visit was in no comparision to the large crowds he pulled during his visit to Fiji soon after. During his visit, majority of high born chiefs and almost all senior govenrment people were present for traditional functions and accorded him precedence, even over the president himself. I seriously doubt this would have happened if chiefs and the people of Fiji felt otherwise. Senator Atu Bain has been the main person in government pushing for a complete break from Fiji's British links, but she has been in the minority by far, the repeated calls for stripping all royal vestiges from Fijis national life havent met with much support, the union jack is still on the flag, parades still happen on her birthday and her face is still on the currency.

Just sharing some thoughts on why I wrote the article the way I did....cheers

Consistent format for name Fiji Election articles[edit]

Hi David, I have noticed that articles on Fiji elections have names in two different formats, for example, Fiji Election (1972) and Fiji election of 1992. Can they be made the same format. It makes it a lot easier to link to it.

You voted keep on the deletion vote. Cyde deleted it when the votes for either opinion were equal which is quiet bbizarre. If it is ok with you then let's take it to deletion review? Hope to here from you asap. Unitedroad 06:30, 22 September 2006 (UTC)

Could you take it to deletion review because somehow I am not very clear about how to do it , wiki always seems to have weird rules which I can not understand. If you do then also give me the link to it just in case I can not find it myself. This article deserves to be brought back. Unitedroad 11:39, 22 September 2006 (UTC)

I told Cyde that it was wrong of him to delete that article and also that if it seemed that I was attacking him then sobeit. Some admins here are very opinionated about how WP must be run. What is the threshold needed to delete an article? One of the articles I contributed to was deleted because there were three votes for deletion and none in favour of keeping it so I am just curious if deleting it was an inappropriate action on that admin's part. I'll ask some of the people here that I am on good terms with to vote in the DRV , I think they will be interested in this. Unitedroad 04:44, 23 September 2006 (UTC)

Wikimapia discussion[edit]

David, thank you for pointing some ideas about Wikimapia, you may continue the discussion at http://meta.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikimapia (I thought I wrote this already, maybe it was just a preview). Waiting for your ideas. --Alexandre Koriakine

David, hello! We've opened registration. When you register, I'll high rank you (reload Wikimapia, you will se in drop-down menu under Wikimapia). Is somewhere I can read of user levels in Wikipedia? -- (is there autodate.. ah yes, 4-tilde) Alexandre Koriakine 22:10, 8 October 2006 (UTC)

David, hello. I think you are in NZ? True? Are there any sharks? I expect the nature is amazign? Have you ever read The children of Captain Grant?

Thanks for correcting my English :)

What do you think if we have a place with some information (approved place), say, in 10 sentences. Then we show to user a button 'Create a new ************ Wikipedia article ' pointing to http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=*************&action=edit with already generated text from ***********? What do you think?

Also is there now a real necessity that we must choose a 'licence' for the project? Probably a kind of http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/2.5/ or http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/2.5/? Just wondering must we think about this more closely? Alexandre Koriakine 22:12, 17 October 2006 (UTC)

Davis, good day. I've created a bot http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Bots/Requests_for_approval/Wikimapiabot, I think we have to go this way to create pages from Wikimapia?

By the way, what do you think, http://wikimapia.org/#y=-18077979&x=-178857422&z=8&l=0&m=a&v=2&show=/1479813/ (Matei Airfield is the only airport on the island of Taveuni, off the coast of Vanua Levu) is places like this have to be in Wikipedia, or they need more info? Alexandre Koriakine 11:17, 26 October 2006 (UTC)

Also, David, I point to some good templates http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:Geolinks-US-cityscale and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:Geolinks-US-streetscale, which is protected and where wikimapia placed with satellite imagery providers, so I think it needs to be not with Google and Live. And it's strange we are in city but not street scale. Moreover, if we will have approval to insert new articles with our bot (if not - we will have another system to open user with text to edit, but this is not user-friendly), they will be well-formed and they will automatically have Wikimapia template you made and other needed links. Turaga Na Rasau[edit]

Bula David

your input is invaluable my research on the subject has brought much information the challenge is arranging it in a cohesive format.

everything from 1840 onward when the British and the missionarries started documenting things is easy but prior to this Fiji History was preserved in stories by our elders, chants and dances collecting this information and cross checking it with other sorces available and doing this on a limited budget is challenging especially when it is not my full time Job.

so thanks again, your input on the web has helped me also arrange my own research in a more cohesive form.

the saddest thing in Fiji we learn our history only based on what the British recorded other information exists but it needs to be recorded formatted cross checked and taught in more detail in schools, anyway I am ranting on bit, the point of the note was just to say thanks very much or in my language VINAKA VAKA LEVU.

Piet Duvenage[edit]

David. But surely the guy has to be worthy of an article before there is any need for one?. For your information, he was an obscure Cape Town doctor who broke his neck in a rugby scrum in 1946. He was then aged around 25. His only claim to fame is that he was married to one Janet Watt. Surely Duvenage does not merit an article in his own right, so why the red link in the Ian Smith article?. best wishes. Bob

re: Administrator?[edit]

Hi David - wow, thanks for the kind words :) I have definitely considered adminship, as I do a bit of vandal patrol and I think the extra, shiny buttons would help. However, the RfA standards are becoming so stringent (and quite rightly so) that I doubt I'd get in. Maybe, once you see my WP:space edits hit around 1000, you can ask me again!

But thanks very much for the thought. Of course, my work is nothing compared to yours, my jaw dropped in surprise when I saw that all the Fiji-related articles I had been repairing were written by you, alone! Have you ever considered adminship yourself? riana_dzasta 13:22, 18 October 2006 (UTC)

Hello David, Alphachimp just informed me that you are an administrator. Whoops. Should've guessed! Sorry if that was rude, I didn't mean it that way. riana_dzasta 14:13, 18 October 2006 (UTC)
Yes, that was a rather black-and-white way of viewing the situation, I agree. And I guess if someone as experienced as yourself thinks I'm doing the right thing, chances are good that I actually am :) I'll just take a little more time, that's all, it's an important task and I don't want to be seen rushing into it. riana_dzasta 00:20, 19 October 2006 (UTC)

Wikitravel[edit]

My understanding is that only WikiMedia wikis should use boxed or logo'ed styles of cross-references. IMDB, Wikitravel, and Wikia websites must use relatively plain text. See Template talk:Wikitravel#Wikitravel is not a Wikimedia project. I've reverted your change to the template in order to move back to approved way of doing things. -- Cjensen 22:50, 19 October 2006 (UTC)

I'm uncertain if it's just custom or not, but it caused some heat last time someone switched it to boxed-style, and it does seem vaguely reasonable to not link to website using the same style normally used for WikiMedia projects, especially when the website uses "wiki" in its name. Checking out Wikipedia:Template messages/Links, it looks like there are only two extlink templates which use a boxed-logo look out of several dozen extlinks templates. I suspect it's just a matter of time before they get the beatdown too. :-) -- Cjensen 23:05, 19 October 2006 (UTC)

Ah, I see now. It came up during TFDs for Memoryalpha and Uncyclopedia. -- Cjensen 23:20, 19 October 2006 (UTC)

Hello Again[edit]

It is good to hear from you again. I was going to contact you to see how things have been going after my wikification process. Wikipedia has come along in leaps and bounds since I was last here. I still remember the days when wiki was plain white with less than 50,000 articles. It is good to see your Fiji project is still going strong and it is still being ported to Polish. I may even chip in a bit on Fiji, as I have an interest in Oceanic football.

The content I am putting up at the moment is all stuff I wrote and was registered with US copyright office, but that project has also collapsed now :P It has been sitting around doing nothing, so I thought I'd put it up here. After it is all up I will start writing aritlces here. Like yourself, I am very busy and have been working 80-90 hours a week for at least the last three months; so I don't know how quick it will all be happen. Most of that time has been spent working on a website, which is currently the same as the one as i am using in my link tag [7].

Incase my name sounds too ... sinister it is indirectly inspired by Dante's Divine Comedy

Demographics of Korea[edit]

Hello Mr. Davidcannon. Could you look at the discussion for the article Demographics of South Korea? Thank you very much. (Wikimachine 00:57, 10 November 2006 (UTC))

Thanks for the warm welcome[edit]

I thought getting content from the LoC was a widely known practice. I got that impression because I saw many articles with the "loc" tag, and you can see from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Country_Studies and http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:Whatlinkshere/Template:Loc&limit=500&from=0 that there are countless other articles that do exactly this, many consisting entirely of LoC content. There's also two Wikiprojects to incorporate the Country Studies into Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_Library_of_Congress_Country_Studies_assimilation and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_Library_of_Congress_Country_Studies. See also WikiProject Japan. They say "Wikipedia includes all texts from the US Library of Congress: Country Studies Japan" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_Japan_update. So I thought I was trying to help fill an overlooked hole here. I didn't overwrite any existing content, and did not add chunks to well-developed articles, like "History of Korea". I thought the work would be welcomed and improved (including by moving parts to more appropriate articles, if necessary), not deleted and attacked. WikiWitchWest 17:04, 10 November 2006 (UTC)

Turaga na Rasau[edit]

honestly? i despair at the drivel Mr. Benefield produces, it reminds of his carreer on radio and television, where he managed to become the single most annoying media personality in the country. Personally i'm in favour of AfDing his entire corpus and deleting his account as well.

All this individual is doing is writing a bunch of drivel about his own relatives, they all come pretty close to bad ideas for articles, especially in the Fiji context. His behaviour in trying to link his family to truly high born families in Bau and Lakeba (as opposed to the minor title he is linked to) show a distinct lack of class, especially in the Fijian cultural context.

I have honestly never heard of this title in all my life, I'm tempted to prod this thing for lack of notability , but i'm going to give it a miss as i know nothing about Vanuabalavu families, and never set foot anywhere in Lau besides Moala. Suffice it to say i do not believe that every minor village title deserves to get in to wikipedia, there are literally thousands of them out there.

As you can tell I have a difficulty bringing neutral point of view to this matter, so I think i'll just stay out of it, if its all the same to you.

There are some Lauan wikpedians out there that might want to help and would probably more useful. I'm thinking of User:Laulad and User:Sanaya who unfortunately haven't been very active recently. --Xorkl000 11:08, 14 November 2006 (UTC)

Wikimapia[edit]

Hello David :) We are busy and I hope we will finish with bot test tomorrow :) As for the license, as I talked you, it must be free to use but with some restrictions (we don't want to things like answer.com etc...). Best wishes to you and your family!Alexandre Koriakine 00:49, 15 November 2006 (UTC)

Good day! I ask myself, did you feel the earthquake or not. I think no, because it was far from where you live. Here is winter already, but not too much of snow! Ouch! What about our project - we are busy as usual, optimizing everything to deal with big amount of data which we have and which is growing constantly, implementing many user functions and also working for other projects. We stalled wikimapia-to-wikipedia-bot request for a while, have to think because it's not obvious that Wikipedians will like it and they may think this is a kind of abuse and they could start to delete Wikimapia information (as it was in WP:NL). Maybe we have to grow a little then to think more about this bot, because this bot (not exactly a bot, but a feature) would be very helpful for Wikipedia (IMHO). However, it's also possible that people won't widely use this function. So, we have to think more about this kind of integration. Cheers! p.s. Wikimapia is close to 2 mln places. By the way - there's a city which can be a perfect Wikimapia example - Cambridge in UK - http://wikimapia.org/#y=52210000&x=130000&z=13&l=0&m=a .

Trying to remove an article you apparently started (and certainly edited a lot)[edit]

Hi Mr Cannon. Please see Articles for deletion / Jonathan Sarfati. 58.162.2.122 03:31, 18 November 2006 (UTC)

GetWiki[edit]

If you wish to dispute AfD closures, please do so at Wikipedia:Deletion review like everyone else. There is a review of the closing under way here. --Sam Blanning(talk) 13:46, 21 November 2006 (UTC)

There was nothing to dispute. There was NO consensus to delete the article - as i remember, there were 7 votes in favour and 7 votes against. That is NOT consensus. A two-thirds vote, or close to it, is normally required for deletion. One admin unilaterally decided to delete on a 50 percent vote. I WILL NOT STAND FOR THAT. It was HE, not I, who failed to follow proper procedures. I have undeleted the article (again), and will keep on doing so until there IS a clear consensus to delete it. David Cannon 20:29, 21 November 2006 (UTC)
AfD is not a vote. I have reported this to WP:ANI so someone can deal with your wheel warring. --Sam Blanning(talk) 20:48, 21 November 2006 (UTC)
The brute force approach isn't going to help- please, stop undeleting. Friday (talk) 20:57, 21 November 2006 (UTC)

You're an admin, you should know better by now that AFD is not a vote. --Cyde Weys 22:03, 21 November 2006 (UTC)

Image:Rotumaflag.jpg listed for deletion[edit]

Dear uploader: The media file you uploaded as Image:Rotumaflag.jpg has been listed for speedy deletion because you selected a copyright license type implying some type of restricted use, such as for non-commercial use only, or for educational use only or for use on Wikipedia by permission. While it might seem reasonable to assume that such files can be freely used on Wikipedia, a non-profit website, this is in fact not the case. Please do not upload any more files with these restrictions on them, because content on Wikipedia needs to be compatible with the GNU Free Documentation License, which allows anyone to use it for any purpose, commercial or non-commercial.

If you created this media file and want to use it on Wikipedia, you may re-upload it, but use the license {{GFDL-self}} to license it under the GFDL, or {{cc-by-sa-2.5}} to license it under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike license, or use {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain.

If you did not create this media file but want to use it on Wikipedia, there are two ways to proceed. First, you may choose one of the fair use tags from this list if you believe one of those fair use rationales applies to this file. Second, you may want to contact the copyright holder and request that they make the media available under a free license.

If you have any questions please ask at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. Thank you. Himasaram 05:32, 23 November 2006 (UTC)

Fiji tensions[edit]

Can you update the appropriate articles on this matter, or do you not currently have the time or inclination? If you can't make the changes yourself, would you suggest I add to the existing Fiji crisis of 2005-2006, some other article, or create a new article on the situation?-gadfium 07:38, 26 November 2006 (UTC)

Unspecified source for Image:Shehushagari.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Shehushagari.jpg. I notice the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this file yourself, then there needs to be a justification explaining why we have the right to use it on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you did not create the file yourself, then you need to specify where it was found, i.e., in most cases link to the website where it was taken from, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the file also doesn't have a copyright tag, then one should be added. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as {{Non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.Thaurisil 06:26, 1 December 2006 (UTC)

Image tagging for Image:Waynehughes.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Waynehughes.jpg. The image has been identified as not specifying the source and creator of the image, which is required by Wikipedia's policy on images. If you don't indicate the source and creator of the image on the image's description page, it may be deleted some time in the next seven days. If you have uploaded other images, please verify that you have provided source information for them as well.

Image:Aminegemayelsmall.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Aminegemayelsmall.jpg. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the image description page and edit it to add {{Replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use image by finding a freely licensed image of its subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or a similar) image under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that any fair use images which are replaceable by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Chowbok 03:23, 4 December 2006 (UTC)

Moves[edit]

Would you be okay if I moved "Fiji general election, ...." to "Fijian general election, ...." now? I'd also like to move the "Fiji coup of ...." and "Fiji crisis of ...." to ".... Fijian coup d'état" and ".... Fijian crisis", respectively... Anyway, I won't do any of that unless I know you're okay with it. —Nightstallion (?) 09:06, 4 December 2006 (UTC)

Your opinion[edit]

Hi. I am retiring from Wikipedia soon and I am not going to contribute anymore. But before I do, I would like you to see the List of Lebanese people article and, and the conflict that occured between me and user:Lcnj. As a major contributor to Lebanese-related articles, your opinion and your say in this would be of great help and/or influence. As I said, I'm done with Wikipedia. But for the sake of Lebanon and this article, please compare between mine and that of the user mentioned above and give your say in this. I hope you would consider this. Fiji update[edit]

2006 Fijian coup d'état plot is precipitous indeed, no coup has happened as far as i know. Perhaps if you removed the last section and merged it with Escalation, and moved the entire article to something like "December 2006 Crisis" or something it would make a worthwile article. --Xorkl000 20:22, 4 December 2006 (UTC)

From Muriel[edit]

Hi David! Thanks for your nice message! All is well with me, i hope with you too. Wiki-pt is still growing and recently we got to 200k. It came Long way since the 8000 articles! Wiki-en, in the meantime, grew too big and too silly for me. I think wiki-en takes itself too serious and its already over the edge that allows efficient bottom-to-top management... Fiji - order of precedence (chiefs, etc.)[edit]

Thanks for your explanation at my (old) talk page. I wonder though, if the Great Council of Chiefs is a body constitutionally above the President, wouldn't the Paramount Chief of the Council therefore always take precedence over the President, even if only in a ceremonial sense? --G2bambino 23:36, 12 December 2006 (UTC)

Mere Samisoni, Coup stances, etc.[edit]

its claimed that Samisoni is related to Qolikoro, who was the late Tui Nayau's mother. Qolikoro was a commoner.

Please note that most of this drivel is written by Benefield, who is well known for claiming high status for his own family, with no references, support, or sources. --Xorkl000 01:22, 18 December 2006 (UTC)

MAIKELI'S COMMENTS ADDED well well well user Xork1000 this is not drival but fact, if you want to make offensive comments to someones character and intentions, at least have the courage to idnetify yourself and not hide behind some madeup name. my sources are concrete and it is not my sole research but the culmination of years of research I am very offended but this individual and you better be fair and NOT use defamatory comments Malo Maikeli

Re: Litia Mara Dugdale[edit]

Hello. Thank you too, for your kind words. I probably could have caught the notability if I'd recognized the term "Adi", and you're right about people not realizing notability in unfamiliar areas. I hope you have a Merry Christmas. :) --Fang Aili talk 00:58, 24 December 2006 (UTC)

Indo Fijian[edit]

Please Refrain from using the term Indo-Fijian we resent being called that and that is what is causing the racial discrimination in Fiji.We are Citizens of Fiji and are Fijian thats whats written in our passport. The term should be used to define India-born people in Fiji but most 'Indo-Fijians have lived here for 4 Generation and we are more Fijian than anything else.Thanx.--Cometstyles 11:54, 26 December 2006 (UTC)

FROM MAIKELI[edit]

Bula David

Merry Christmas and a happy New Year, please ask your sub editor xork1000 to no longer make defamtory remarks toward me and remain objective in critisms and at least have the courage to identify him or herself.

objectivity is exactly the issue here - he has none - he is writing about his own relatives. I have a right to my anononimity (this has nothing to do with Mr. Benefield, i happen to live in a dictatorship where people are beaten up by the military for expressing their opinion) --Xorkl000 09:04, 27 December 2006 (UTC)

wikipedia I thought of as an objective place with sensible individuals who are fair minded not individuals who make unfounded and untrue comments, my contributions are not drivel and I am not walking around blowing my own horn.

I stand by both statements. His work is drivel, this is obvious when you read it. He does not have objective distance from the subject matter (they are all his relatives). This is bad form both from a Fijian cultural perspective and the policies of Wikipedia --Xorkl000 09:04, 27 December 2006 (UTC)

the research is cumilation of research done by Ratu Viliame Fonolahi (turaga na Rasau now deceased), Ratu David Toganivalu (Turaga Na Masau from Bau now also deceased, RatuIvan Keni (Ratu Viliame's son), and Ratu Keni Naulumatua (Jnr and current Rasau)and Myself it is 50 years worht of research with great effort and difficulty.

There you go, he's admitted it - the articles are in clear violation of WP:NOR and WP:V, they need to be sent to WP:AFD immediately. If I were to do this my objectivity would be questioned, can i ask you to start this process. --Xorkl000 09:04, 27 December 2006 (UTC)

I hope I would be treated with more fairness and respect

I see no evidence that he deserves any. His work is of poor quality, he has no understanding of how this place works (nor has any shown any desire to increase his understanding). I have met this person in the flesh, he really is an incredibly stupid individual - there is really nothing we can do for people like this. --Xorkl000 09:04, 27 December 2006 (UTC)

FROM MAIKELI[edit]

Bula David

thank you for your input, I am having trouble with knowing how to format things right using wikipedia and I am learning I am sorry if I put you out but as I said earlier thank you for your help in steering me right, I would not have presented in that format to my English teacher if I were studing but those days are long gone and I only get to work on the article in my spare time, I am still learning to get used to using wikipedia.

as for Xork1000 I am not interested in getting into a war on words my point simply is if he is going to talk big then identify himself and do not hide behind and alias, secondly at least be diplomatic about his criticism as educated men we should at least extend eachother that courtesy.

the spelling and grammar of the above statement (and everything else he has written) make me wonder how includes himself in the category of "educated men" --Xorkl000 09:19, 27 December 2006 (UTC)

again I do not wish to bother you any longer on the topic, I will make an effort to go back through my resource material as well as improving the articles I have contributed, again I am limited in time and I hope you would be understanding in that regard.

thank you once again for your effort David tobe honest and give me constructive feedback.

Bula David

Is this fair??

I am being unfairly slandered and insulted and this is O.K on Wikipedia???

This guy can't even say it to my face and identify himself and this is O.K part of contributing to Wikipedia shouldn't someone have to show their reasoning for being so abusive and insulting?????

this is not right David, fair enough you question my work I have explained my point of view and yet further insults and hiding behind his anominity???

well David if you agree with this person then so be it?

I know my work is true and my research but if it will stop all this animosity and you feel it fit to remove then so be it David???

but very dissappointing that I have been so dis-respected for no reason very dissappointing that this can happen on Wikipedia!!!

anyway....thats life.

Clarification[edit]

In a comment that you wrote to another editor, you said: "linked to an external source that other Wikipedians can access. Failing that, I cannot save your articles." I do not beleive that this is the case. As I understand it articles can be referenced to printed material and in some cases TV sources as well. Am I missing something? --Kevin Murray 11:46, 27 December 2006 (UTC)

Sorry, I didn't express myself very well - asleep at the wheel at almost 1am. What I meant was that the information must be able to be corroborated from some source other than wikipedia - and yes, that could be books, radio, TV, or the web. David Cannon 11:50, 27 December 2006 (UTC)
No worries, and thanks --Kevin Murray 11:54, 27 December 2006 (UTC)

David Please note:[edit]

"Ai Cavuti vaka tikina" lists the "Turaga na Ravunisa" wrongly as when it was written there was a period between when Ratu Viliam Fonolahi died and then when Ratu Keni was then nominated by the Vanua of LOMALOMA THE LAU PROVINCIAL COUNCIL AND THE FIJIAN AFFAIRS BOARD WHO HAVE RECORDS AND WILL CONFIRM THIS, THIS IS A LONG ADMINISTRATIVE PROCESS AND REQUIRES THE SIGNTURES OF ALL THE CHIEFLY FAMILY OF VALELEVU OF LOMALOMA TIKINA this process has already been completed. and the traditional installation would have taken place this year but current political events have changed this and next year looks like a more likely period. there are also early records that are kept by the Fijian affairs board also records in the "Au vola ni kawa bula" (the book holds all the records of titles and title holders and villages and their various families) at the Fijian affairs board which will confirm the soverenty of the "Turaga Na Rasau" please contact them direct before considering this and related articles for deletion. Actually all titles and articles on Fiji should be confirmed by the FAB (Fijian Affairs Board) and the variuos provincial councils to which they belong. many people entering information regarding Fijian traditional titles and history on wikipedia do not have expressed permission of the provinicial councils and the Fijian affairs board and therefore should all be re-considered and reviewed pending the endorsement of the respective councils and Tikinas to which this history and information belongs and it should be endorsed by the Great Council of Chiefs not just of one or two books written by individuals or one or two independant sources

What is your authoruty and credentials to comentate and on Fijian traditional history and titles have you crossed checked with The Fijian Afairs board and the variuos provincial Councils to which these titles and history belongs??
