Wikimedia Commons and Wikipedia are basically different websites, though they are all maintained by The Wikimedia Foundation. They have very different goals, and so they are kept separate. Unfortunately, you'll have to keep an eye on both. However, files uploaded to Commons do have a corresponding page on Wikipedia.
