This user advocates unified discussion, if you comment here, I will reply on your talk page and move the entire discussion to your talk page in the process; I would prefer it if you did the same, moving the thread back here for your reply. That way the discussions will always stay together and the intended recipient will see the message alert when he or she logs on. If you create a broken discussion by replying here while leaving my comments on your talk page, I may leave the discussion as is and continue the broken discussion, or I may reunite the discussion in my reply, depending on what I think makes more sense. Thanks.

Stellenbosch to bid for Wikimania 2012![edit]

Hi Doug!

The nascent South African Wikimedia chapter has decided to bid to host Wikimania in Stellenbosch, South Africa in 2012. This would be the first Wikimania in South Africa, and would be a great advertisement for our country. Please take a look at meta:Wikimania_2012/Bids/Stellenbosch. If you can add to the discussion, please do. If you feel that you are able to do anything to help, please join the Wikimedia South Africa mailing list and let us know. Even simple messages of support are valued!

Best regards,

David Richfield

Greetings!

The AfroCine Project welcomes you to October, the first out of the two months which has been dedicated to improving contents that centre around the cinema of Africa, the Caribbean, and the diaspora.

This is a global online edit-a-thon, which is happening in at least 5 language editions of Wikipedia, including the English Wikipedia! Join us in this exciting venture, by helping to create or expand articles which are connected to this scope. Also remember to list your name under the participants section, if you haven't done so already.

On English Wikipedia, we would be recognizing Users who are able to achieve the following:

  • Overall winner (1st, 2nd, 3rd places)
  • Country Winners
  • Diversity winner
  • High quality contributors
  • Gender-gap fillers
  • Page improvers
  • Wikidata Translators
For further information about the contest, the recognition categories and how to participate, please visit the contest page here. For further inquiries, please leave comments on the contest talkpage or on the main project talkpage. See you around :).--Jamie Tubers (talk) 22:50, 03 October 2018 (UTC)

Account Creation Request[edit]

I verify that I have requested the creation of the username User:Doug, my former username, which currently redirects here. The name is too similar for me to create with basic user rights.--DeirdreAnne(talk contribs) 02:03, 9 October 2018 (UTC)

The intent is the name will not be used but will remain under my control, thus preventing creation by others.--DeirdreAnne(talk contribs) 02:05, 9 October 2018 (UTC)

Forgot to state in my request but I'm requesting the account because it trips the similar account prohibition, requires account creator to complete.--DeirdreAnne(talk contribs) 02:11, 9 October 2018 (UTC)

I have created the account. But you can override the antispoof conflict on wikis where you have sysop rights. ‐‐1997kB (talk) 03:08, 9 October 2018 (UTC)
Thank you. Yes, I knew that but it would technically be using elevated privileges for my own benefit, I believe that even for simple actions that should normally involve independent review or at least another admin on the same wiki saying "OK", may make sense if one is deleting a bunch of sandboxes but for this I think it's better for someone independent to address it. Thanks again. --DeirdreAnne(talk contribs) 23:54, 10 October 2018 (UTC)
