Copy edit request[edit]

I am in the process of getting a FA review for Quicksilver (novel). Several editors commented that it needs copy editing and was wondering if you would be willing to copy edit it, to help me get the article passed? Sadads (talk) 19:16, 6 April 2010 (UTC)

Thank you for the edit request. I am happy to help though I need some time to work through the article. What is your timing for completion? Dtgriffith (talk) 23:01, 6 April 2010 (UTC)
As soon as you can, hopefully I can address most of the issues made by the reviewers before the review closes (pass or fail).Sadads (talk) 18:25, 7 April 2010 (UTC)
Can you please give me an idea on a deadline? I would very much like to help but I need to plan this around a busy schedule and make sure I can do it within the specified timeframe. Dtgriffith (talk) 12:17, 8 April 2010 (UTC)
They closed the review, so by mid next week would be great. Sadads (talk) 20:19, 8 April 2010 (UTC)
Sounds good, I will get started tonight or tomorrow and do as much as I can. Dtgriffith (talk) 23:57, 8 April 2010 (UTC)

Follow up[edit]

Thank you very much, you did a very good job. I didn't realize how many little things I had overlooked. I hope to spend some considerable time working on the Boroque Cycle stuff this summer, and hopefully will have a thorough series of articles, which will definitely need copy-editing. I will keep you in mind for anything else I work on. Sadads (talk) 17:15, 27 April 2010 (UTC)

Copyedit Backlog Elimination Drive[edit]

Hi, as a member of the Guild of Copy Editors you're hereby notified of and invited to participate in the WikiProject Guild of Copy Editors/Backlog elimination drives/May 2010. Please help us eliminate the 8,000+ copyedit backlog! Participating editors will receive barnstars and other awards, according to their level of participation. ɳorɑfʈ Talk! 00:21, 22 April 2010 (UTC)

Copy edit request for Penelope Cruz[edit]

Hey, I don't mean to bother you or anything but I was wondering if you could copy-edit the article and current GAN Penelope Cruz. The GA reviewer said that if the article does not get a copy-edit by Monday May 3, they will fail the article due to prose problems. I left a copy-edit request on the request page but I have not gotten any feed-back. I would be very grateful if you could do a copy-edit on the article. Thanks, Crystal Clear x3 00:51, 29 April 2010 (UTC)

February Shadows[edit]

Hey, so you superb copy-editing skill at Quicksilver brought you to mind. I am doing a GA review of February Shadows, and it's part of a classroom assignment. The students writing is not the best, and it could really use some cleanup. Would you mind taking a look at it before Tuesday? I kindof want to get alot of the review done before she loses responsibility for the classroom assignment. Sadads (talk) 21:24, 30 April 2010 (UTC)

Very good job, that makes the article much more approachable. Now hopefully she will come back and make some of the other changes. I am going to leave it open a little longer because it is a classroom assignment. Sadads (talk) 02:12, 4 May 2010 (UTC)

On copyediting[edit]

Hi Dtgriffith! Just to give you some perspective: last summer I asked a veteran copyeditor about the degree to which we should be improving the articles in the backlog here. Here's the response. Generally I've found copyediting to be a thankless job that's nonetheless necessary. Some of the articles I've found in the backlog are now at GA status, but not many editors bother to take the holistic approach as you call it. Also, I want to apologize for sounding curt earlier, but I've had some reservations about the quality of the copyediting on a drive such as this, which are best not articulated. For your edification, you will also find that frequently editors ask for articles to be copyedited in a short period of time, in hopes the article will pass a GA or FAC review. In my view, rush jobs are seldom effective, and these days I turn down such requests. In fact, Sadads approached me at the same time he/she approached you. I wanted to wait until the article was no longer in the FAC review, and by that point you began your copyedit. Unfortunately, however, often a good copyedit is not all that's needed for an article to pass FAC—as is the case with Quicksilver. I apologize again for my tone which may have sounded a bit shrill, and I'm more than happy to answer any questions you might have. Once the drive is done, I don't expect to be an active member of the GOCE, but I'm always happy to answer questions. Truthkeeper88 (talk) 16:30, 2 May 2010 (UTC)

On behalf of the coordinator of the WikiProject Guild of Copy Editors Backlog elimination drive for May 2010, ɳorɑfʈ Talk!, I would like to thank you for your active participation in the Drive.

I am writing to inform you that we have introduced additional Guild of Copy Editors' Gold Star Awards for the drive.

To qualify, you will need to add an asterisk to all the full copyedits you have completed from the Requests page. More information can be found in the awards section of the Drive. If you have any questions, please post them to the Drive's talk page.

Once again, thank you for participating, and we look forward to a meaningful drop in the numbers due to your hard work and efforts.

GOCE Newsletter[edit]

GOCE backlog elimination drive chart

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors Backlog Elimination Drive! We have now reached the halfway point, and here's what has happened so far.

  • Requests Report - Good news! The number of special requests waiting to be edited has been reduced drastically, with almost all of the remaining items having editors committed to getting them done. Good work, people!
  • Target Report - ɳorɑfʈ's initial target of reducing the backlog of articles for copy edit turned out to be unrealistic insane, so a new target was set: we hope to reduce the to backlog to less than 7,500 items in the queue by the end of the month. The number in the queue was 7,950 as of close of business yesterday.
    • If we "concentrate our firepower" we can wipe out Jan, Feb, and March 2008, meaning the drive will have cleared four months off the backlog queue. Please consider copyediting from one of these months.
  • Rewards Report - We now have some clear leaders on the board in all three Gold Star categories, and many people have qualified for the various barnstars. It is not too late to participate, as it takes just 2,000 words (pre-edit) to qualify for a barnstar! Don't wait! Start participating today. Remember, the ultimate winner is Wikipedia.
  • Notice to Participants - For those who have indicated that you will be working on certain articles on the drive page in your respective tally box, please ensure that you complete these copyedits as soon as possible.

Thank you very much for your participation so far!

Backlog Elimination Drive Wrap-up[edit]

Thanks very much to all who helped with the Guild of Copy Editors Backlog Elimination Drive. We were very close to meeting our target of 7,500 articles remaining in the backlog. Our most shining success is the incredible reduction in the backlog of Special Requests. That part of the project saw a drop from 62 articles in the queue, some dating back to February of 2009, down to a stunning THREE, all of which were being edited at the close of the drive. The Special Requests page will now be a great resource for people looking to tidy up their article in advance of a GA or FA nomination, instead of a place where articles go to die.

Moving forward

GOCE backlog elimination drive chart up to 31 May

The drive has not only forced a great leap forward in reducing the backlog. It has helped promote the Guild, and led to a greater awareness of the level of vigilance required to keep the backlog manageable. Ideas such as charts, graphs, and barnstars helped motivate editors, and meeting other users helped quell any feelings gnomish editors may have had in the past that they were toiling all alone. Keep up the good work people!!

Stats

Almost everyone who participated will receive a barnstar. We will be handing these out over the next week or so.

  • Five people will receive the highest award for word count (80,000 or more), the Most Excellent Order of the Caretaker's Star: Bullock, Diannaa, NielsenGW, S Masters, and Torchiest.
  • The Order of the Superior Scribe (40,000+) goes to Auntieruth55, Bobnorwal, Kojozone, Lfstevens, and Mlpearc.
  • fds wins the Modern Guild of Copy Editors Barnstar (30,000+).
  • The Old School League of Copyeditors Barnstar for 20,000+ is awarded to A. Parrot, mono, Truthkeeper88, and The Utahraptor.
  • the Tireless Conributor Barnstar (12,000+) goes to dtgriffith, Laurinavicius, and Quinxorin.

Grab some glory, and a barnstar[edit]

Hi, I'd like to invite you to participate in the Guild of Copy Editors July 2010 Backlog Elimination Drive. In May, about 30 editors helped remove the {{copyedit}} tag from 1175 articles. The backlog is still over 7500 articles, and extends back to the beginning of 2008! We really need your help to reduce it. Copyediting just a couple articles can qualify you for a barnstar. Serious copyeditors can win prestigious and exclusive rewards. See the event page for more information. And thanks for your consideration. ɳorɑfʈ Talk! 14:42, 10 June 2010 (UTC)

Thank you very much for signing up for the July Backlog Elimination Drive! The copyedit backlog stretches back two and a half years, all the way back to the beginning of 2008! We're really going to need all the help we can to get it down to a manageable number. We've ambitiously set a goal of clearing all of 2008 from the backlog this month. In order to do that, we're going to need more participants. Is there anyone that you can invite or ask to participate with you? If so, we're offering an award to the person who brings in the most referrals. Just notify ɳorɑfʈ Talk! or Diannaa TALK of who your referrals are. Once again, thanks for your support! GOCE July 2010 backlog elimination drive chart

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors Backlog Elimination Drive! We have now passed the halfway point, so here's an update.

Progress Report - Progress toward the targets has been good. 751 articles out of the approximately 1,600 we would like to get completed by the end of the month were done by July 15, so we will be very close to meeting the target for volume. However, we would like to clear all of the 2008 articles from the backlog, and there are still 892 left to do. Please consider choosing one of these older articles when looking for something to copy edit. If we focus our firepower we can completely wipe out 2008 from the queue.

Participation Report - 95 people signed up for the July drive. This is a great result compared to May, when we had 36. However, in May only one person that signed up didn't do any copy edits, and in July only 59 of the 95 have posted any copy edits on the big board.

The task may seem insurmountable but please remember that if all 95 participants copy edit just one article a day from now until the end of the month, we will eliminate 1,300 more articles from the backlog. So please consider participating at whatever level you can! All contributions are appreciated.

This newsletter was prepared for the GOCE by Diannaa (Talk), S Masters (talk), and The Raptor Let's talk.

Regarding the Transfer of learning article[edit]

I can see that this article's copy edit is not done, so I'm going to go through a couple sections today and do some copy editing. Do you think we should both get credit for it, since we're both working on it? The Raptor Let's talk/My mistakes; I mean, er, contributions 12:57, 19 July 2010 (UTC)

Hi, I'm open to whatever the admins for the drive decide is fair. I am having difficulty finding time to complete this or any major edit right now, too many unanticipated things in real life are getting in the way, unfortunately. And I am about to be out of commission later this week for medical reasons. Please feel free to run with it and I am happy to do another full pass afterwards one of these next evenings as time allows. It's written in an overly complicated style so it would only help to have the attention of two editors. dtgriffith [talk] 13:45, 19 July 2010 (UTC)
Didn't they say on the talk page of the drive that we would both get credit for copy editing? The Raptor Let's talk/My mistakes; I mean, er, contributions 13:52, 19 July 2010 (UTC)
There was a mention of that but it did not appear to be concrete. I will raise the question as a new topic so we can get a clear answer. dtgriffith [talk] 13:58, 19 July 2010 (UTC)
Alright. The Raptor Let's talk/My mistakes; I mean, er, contributions 14:00, 19 July 2010 (UTC)

Copy edit request[edit]

So I have a request, since you did such a good job on Quicksilver (novel). I am currently doing work with the United States Army Center of Military History and part of the work has led me to encounter a couple editors who are writing either formally or informally for Army military units all over the place. Recently, User:Damon Cluck, an Arkansas Guard historian, has been working on 206th Field Artillery Regiment (United States). I have given it a look for him and am not sure if my basic copy-editing will do a whole lot of good, would you be interested in copy-editing it, if you are not too busy with other pages? Sadads (talk) 19:20, 20 July 2010 (UTC)

Hey Sadads, thanks for thinking of me. I would be interested but can't do it immediately. If time is not a factor, as in no review deadlines, then I can absolutely help out fairly soon. Let me know what works. dtgriffith [talk] 01:35, 21 July 2010 (UTC)
I don't think time is a factor, he has been working on this for an extended period and hasn't gone up for any reviews. But I thought I would head off the big error stuff early if I can, Sadads (talk) 02:05, 21 July 2010 (UTC)
Hey Sadads, I finally had the chance to glance over the article and Talk page. I saw the recommendation for a copy editor outside of the military, which applies to me. I will start working on the article soon, feel free to give the Military History editors a head's up. I am sure the copy edit will span a good period of time as the article is very long and my usual availability comes in small pockets of time. Do you plan to work on the article as well? dtgriffith [talk] 05:27, 3 August 2010 (UTC)
I plan to review it soon, probably the next couple of days. Sadads (talk) 10:59, 3 August 2010 (UTC)

Transfer of learning[edit]

I have finished copy editing transfer of learning, but I would like you to go through it first, since we were working on it together, before I remove the goce and copy edit tags. The Raptor Let's talk/My mistakes; I mean, er, contributions 13:57, 23 July 2010 (UTC)

Thanks Raptor. I will run through it as I am able, sometime soon. I am recovering from knee surgery right now, having a hard time focusing on reading or writing between the pain and medication. I should be back to normal in another few days. dtgriffith [talk] 14:57, 23 July 2010 (UTC)
Take your time, and feel better soon. :) The Raptor Let's talk/My mistakes; I mean, er, contributions 14:59, 23 July 2010 (UTC)
Thanks again, recovery is painful at times but moving along. I am finally back to work on this article. There are two primary things I am not sure how to tackle and would like to get your thoughts:
  1. Heavy inconsistent use of "i.e." It is used within parenthesis and following semicolons. I cannot find a clear direction on how to address this in MOS, though I might just be missing it.
  2. Style formatting of the two disciplines used in "versus" form. First, there is the question of whether to italicize the whole versus statement or just the disciplines. Secondly, "versus" appears spelled out and abbreviated inconsistently. I know both are acceptable per MOS but the context may dictate the full word spelling in some cases.
I am about half way through the article now. I think it will be safe to call this finished after today. Remember to get the word count I have posted on the Drive page, I counted all text in the bullets and tables prior to beginning the edit. Thanks for working together on this! Sorry if I came across indignant when I posted the request on the Drive page to editors to check for activity on an article before claiming, I realize I may have come across in a somewhat negative way and that completely not my intention. dtgriffith [talk] 17:20, 25 July 2010 (UTC)
Just finished the entire article. Other than the two points listed above I feel it's ready to remove the copy edit tag. Let me know what you think. dtgriffith [talk] 18:31, 25 July 2010 (UTC)
Sorry I didn't respond sooner, I just got back from a trip. I'll try to take care of those things you pointed out, then I'll remove the tag and we can both finally mark it as done. The Raptor Let's talk/My mistakes; I mean, er, contributions 21:49, 25 July 2010 (UTC)
Update: I just did some outside research and found the answers to my questions above. The i.e. usage is acceptable in all methods it is presented in the article. As for versus, just leave it to context. I will remove the tags so we can declare the article complete. Thanks again! dtgriffith [talk] 21:51, 25 July 2010 (UTC)
Looks like we were editing at the same time. We're all set! dtgriffith [talk] 21:51, 25 July 2010 (UTC)

GOCE drive[edit]

Are you still working on Bathhouse Row? I went to work on it, but your tag is still there from the 25th. Let me know and I will either delete the tag and claim your work or let you finish working on it. Okay, just kidding. ; ) Cindamuse (talk) 20:30, 28 July 2010 (UTC)

Hi, I have every intention on finishing it this week. I am recovering from knee surgery and playing catch up with my life, so I am running a little behind. I will change the tag to {{GOCEuc}}. dtgriffith [talk] 00:06, 29 July 2010 (UTC)
Ouch! Take it easy, I understand pain. Hope you heal quickly. Cindamuse (talk) 00:37, 29 July 2010 (UTC)
Thanks! Much appreciated. dtgriffith [talk] 00:55, 29 July 2010 (UTC)
Cindamuse, you are welcome to take over the article. Real life is preventing me from finishing, unfortunately. I will remove the GOCEuc tag. Best! dtgriffith [talk] 13:32, 31 July 2010 (UTC)

South Britain Historic District, and Fairfield NRHPs[edit]

Hi DtGriffith -- I am about done with starting new NRHP articles in National Register of Historic Places listings in Fairfield County, Connecticut, and I wonder about improving the list and any of the articles linked with new photos. Have you had a chance to visit any and snap pics? I haven't checked your contrib history to see if you upload photos, but if you haven't yet it is pretty straightforward. Best to do so at commons.wikimedia.org. Also, I would be glad to help develop South Britain Historic District in New Haven county, further, but there too it would be great to have any photos available. No big problem if you haven't had a chance, though. Thanks! --doncram (talk) 18:00, 1 August 2010 (UTC)

Hi Doncram, good to hear form you. This has been on my mind, though I am have been inundated in my real life with several things, some of which are medical, so my time dedicated to Wikipedia is lean and sporadic lately. I have some photos of South Britain houses/buildings which I took earlier this year. I will upload them to Commons and link them to the page when I find the opportunity. I am recovering from knee surgery with a second surgery scheduled in four weeks, so walking the neighborhood with a camera is not an option for me until sometime in October.
I have been brainstorming on how to approach writing this article and finding it challenging, perhaps breaking it down by street may work. I am very happy that you are offering to help. If you wish to get started and want to run questions/ideas about the area by me I would be happy to do at least that to start with. I am familiar with a few published sources we can pull info from. Please bear with me as I sort things out and slowly get my life back on track. Thanks! dtgriffith [talk] 05:40, 3 August 2010 (UTC)

GOCE Backlog Elimination Drive Wrap-up[edit]

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors July 2010 Backlog Elimination Drive. Thanks to all who participated in the drive! Over 100 editors—including Jimbo Wales—signed up this time (nearly triple the participants of the May drive). This benefited the Guild as well as the articles in need of copy editing. You can see from the comparison graphs that we increased the number of completed copyedits substantially. Unfortunately, we were not able to meet our goal of completely wiping out 2008 from the queue. We also were not able to reduce the backlog to less than 6,000 articles. We suspect people were busy with real life summertime things, at least in the northern hemisphere! We were able to remove the months of January, February, March, April, and May from the backlog, and we almost wiped out the month of June. We reduced the backlog by 1,289 articles (17%), so all in all it was a very successful drive, and we will be holding another event soon. We'll come up with some new ideas to try to keep things fresh and interesting. Keep up the good work, everybody!

Progress report — We have been making solid progress in eliminating the 2008 articles from the backlog so far. If we continue to focus our firepower we can completely wipe out 2008 from the queue. Overall volumes are lower than expected though, with nearly a thousand articles yet to be done if we are to meet our overall target. If you have not yet participated in the drive, we recommend you do so. If each person who signed up edits one article per day from now till the end of the month we can eliminate another 1,065 articles from the backlog. All contributions are appreciated.

Announcement: credit for 10k+ articles — Participants editing a 10k word article may claim credit for two 5k+ articles on the leaderboard. Those that edit a 15k word article may claim credit for three. Regardless, the article is still counted as a single article in the tallies.

Reminder — Articles from the Requests page can be included in your tally, even if they do not have a copy edit tag. This is a great place to go if you are interested in finding a higher quality article to work on.

September 2010 Backlog Elimination Drive Conclusion[edit]

GOCE September 2010 backlog elimination drive progress graphs

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors September 2010 Backlog Elimination Drive. Thanks to all who participated! Several of our top editors were called away to real life concerns during the month (be careful out there, people!). This meant that once again, we did not meet all our lofty targets, but we did come close.

Stats

  • Out of 76 registered editors, 45 actively participated.
  • We nearly wiped out the 2008 articles from the backlog—there were only 13 remaining when the drive closed.
  • We reduced the backlog by 725 articles (11.5%), so it was another successful drive.
  • A total of 59 barnstars will be awarded to 40 editors—well done, and congratulations to all.

Barnstars
If you copy edited at least 4,000 words, you qualify for a barnstar. If you edited in the July 2010 GOCE Backlog Elimination Drive, you may have earned rollover words, which counted towards this month's barnstars (except for the leaderboard awards). Any unused word credits will be held over for the next drive, as long as you participated in the September drive. Over the course of the next week or two, we will be handing out the barnstars. Click here to see a list of barnstar winners.

  • We will be holding our next drive in November. You can sign up here.

A huge "thank you" to all editors who helped clear the backlog and to others who helped out behind-the-scenes. See you at the next drive, and until then, please continue to help us work through the backlog. Happy editing!

GOCE copy edit drive[edit]

Writing Magnifying.PNG Greetings, the Wikipedia Guild of Copy-Editors invites you to participate in the November 2010 Backlog Elimination Drive, a month-long effort to reduce the backlog of articles that require copy-editing. The drive will begin on 1 November at 00:00 (UTC) and will end on 30 November at 23:59 (UTC). The goal for this drive is to reduce the backlog by 10% (approximately 500 articles). We hope to focus our efforts on the oldest three months (January, February, and March 2009) and the newest three months (September, October, and November 2010) of articles in the queue.

Sign-up has already begun at the November drive page, and will be open throughout the drive. If you have any questions or concerns, please leave a message on the drive's talk page.

Before you begin copy-editing, please carefully read the instructions on the main drive page. Please make sure that you know how to copy-edit, and be familiar with the Wikipedia Manual of Style.

Awards and barnstars

A range of barnstars will be awarded to active participants, some of which are exclusive to GOCE drives. More information on awards can be found on the main drive page.

Thank you; we look forward to meeting you on the drive!

November 2010 backlog elimination drive update[edit]

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors Backlog Elimination Drive!
Writing Magnifying.PNG

GOCE November 2010 backlog elimination drive progress graphs

We have reached the midway point in our backlog elimination drive, so here is an update.

Participation report — The November drive has 53 participants at this point. We had 77 participants in the September drive. In July, 95 people signed up for the drive, and in May we had 36. If you are not participating, it is not too late to join!

Progress report — The drive is quite successful so far, as we have already almost reached our target of a 10% reduction in the number of articles in the backlog. We are doing very well at keeping our Requests page clear, as those articles count double for word count for this drive.

Please keep in mind the possibility of removing other tags when you are finished with an article. If the article no longer needs {{cleanup}}, {{wikify}}, or other similar maintenance tags, please remove them, as this will make the tasks of other WikiProjects easier to complete. Thanks very much for participating in the Drive, and see you at the finish line!

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors January 2011 Backlog elimination drive! The drive is halfway over, so here are some mid-drive stats.

10yrs-contributing k.svg
Participation
GOCE January 2011 backlog elimination drive progress graphs

So far, 43 people have signed up for this drive. Of these, 25 have participated. If you signed up for the drive but haven't participated yet, it's not too late! Try to copy edit at least a few articles. Remember, if you have rollover words from the last drive, you will lose them if you do not participate in this drive. If you haven't signed up for the drive yet, you can sign up now.

Progress report

We have eliminated two months from the backlog – January and February 2009. One of our goals is to eliminate as many months as possible from the 2009 backlog. Please help us reduce the size of this part of the backlog if you haven't already. Another goal is to reduce the entire backlog by 10%, or by 515 articles. Currently, we have eliminated 375 articles from the queue, so if each participant copy edits four more articles, we will reach that goal.

Thank you for participating in the January 2011 drive. We anticipate it will be another big success!

GOCE Jan 2011 drive.gif

Greetings from the January 2011 Backlog elimination drive! We have reached the end of the month and the end of another successful drive; thanks to all who participated.

Statistics
  • 54 people signed up for the year's first Backlog elimination drive. Of these, 40 participated.
  • One of our goals was to reduce the size of the backlog by at least 10%. We managed to reduce the backlog by 633 articles, or about 12%.
  • Another goal was to eliminate as many 2009 months as possible from the queue. We eliminated January, February, March, and April—4 out of 12 months is not bad! In addition, we eliminated 37% of all remaining 2009 articles from the queue.
  • Chaosdruid copy edited Kutch Gurjar Kashtriya for 32,711 words, which is the largest single article completed in one of our drives so far. This article counts as six 5000-K articles, and Chaosdruid wins the "most 5000-K articles" leaderboard category. Way to go! A complete list of individual results is here.
Barnstars

If you copy edited at least 4,000 words, you qualify for a barnstar. The latest GOCE backlog elimination drive is under way! It began on 1 July and so far 18 people have signed up to help us reduce the number of articles in need of copyediting.

This drive will give a 50% bonus for articles edited from the GOCE requests page. Although we have cleared the backlog of 2009 articles there are still 3,935 articles needing copyediting and any help, no matter how small, would be appreciated.

We are appealing to all GOCE members, and any other editors who wish to participate, to come and help us reduce the number of articles needing copyediting, as well as the backlog of requests. If you have not signed up yet, why not take a look at the current signatories and help us by adding your name and copyediting a few articles. Barnstars will be given to anyone who edits more than 4,000 words, with special awards for the top 5 in the categories: "Number of articles", "Number of words", and "Number of articles of over 5,000 words".

GOCE March 2012 Backlog Elimination progress graphs

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors March 2012 Backlog elimination drive! Here's the mid-drive newsletter.

Participation: We have had 58 people sign up for this drive so far, which compares favorably with our last drive, and 27 have copy-edited at least one article. If you have signed up but have not yet copy-edited any articles, please consider doing so. Every bit helps! If you haven't signed up yet, it's not too late. Join us!

Progress report: Our target of completing the 2010 articles has almost been reached, with only 56 remaining of the 194 we had at the start of the drive. The last ones are always the most difficult, so thank you if you are able to help copy-edit any of the remaining articles. We have reduced the total backlog by 163 articles so far.

Special thanks: Special thanks to Stfg, who has been going through the backlog and doing some preliminary vetting of the articles—removing copyright violations, doing initial clean-up, and nominating some for deletion. This work has helped make the drive a more pleasant experience for all our volunteers.

GOCE March 2012 Backlog Elimination progress graph

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors March 2012 Backlog elimination drive! This is the most successful drive we have had for quite a while. Here is your end-of-drive wrap-up newsletter.

Participation

Of the 70 people who signed up for this drive, 40 copy-edited at least one article. Thanks to all who participated! Special acknowledgement goes out to Lfstevens, who did over 200 articles, most of them in the last third of the drive, and topped all three leaderboard categories. You're a superstar! Stfg and others have been pre-checking the articles for quality and conformance to Wikipedia guidelines; some have been nominated for deletion or had some preliminary clean-up done to help make the copy-edit process more fun and appealing. Thanks to all who helped get those nasty last few articles out of the target months.

Progress report

During this drive we were successful in eliminating our target months—October, November, and December 2010—from the queue, and have now eliminated all the 2010 articles from our list. We were able to complete 500 articles this month! End-of-drive results and barnstar information can be found here.

When working on the backlog, please keep in mind that there are options other than copy-editing available; some articles may be candidates for deletion, or may not be suitable for copy-editing at this time for other reasons. The {{GOCEreviewed}} tag can be placed on any article you find to be totally uneditable, and you can nominate for deletion any that you discover to be copyright violations or completely unintelligible. If you need help deciding what to do, please contact any of the coordinators.

Thank you for participating in the March 2012 drive! All contributions are appreciated. Our next copy-edit drive will be in May.

Progress report: We're on track to meet our targets for the drive, largely due to the efforts of Lfstevens and the others on the leaderboard. Thanks to all. We have reduced our target group of articles—January, February, and March 2011—by over half, and it looks like we will achieve that goal. Good progress is being made on the overall backlog as well, with over 500 articles copy-edited during the drive so far. The total backlog currently sits at around 3200 articles.

Hall of Fame: GOCE coordinator Diannaa was awarded a spot in the GOCE Hall of Fame this month! She has copy-edited over 1567 articles during these drives, and surpassed the 1,000,000-word mark on May 5. On to the second million! – Your drive coordinators: Dank, Diannaa and Stfg

Progress report: We're almost on track to meet our targets for the drive. Great work, guys. We have reduced our target group of articles—May, June, and July 2011—by about 40%, and the overall backlog has been reduced by 264 articles so far, to around 2500 articles.

  • Participation: Out of 37 people signed up for this drive so far, 19 have copy-edited at least one article, about the same as the last drive. If you've signed up but haven't yet copy-edited any articles, every bit helps; if you haven't signed up yet, it's not too late. Join us!
  • Progress report: We're almost on track to meet our targets for the drive. Great work, guys. We have reduced our target group of articles—August, September, and October 2011—by about 44%, and the overall backlog has been reduced by 58 articles so far, to around 2600 articles. GOCE November 2012 copy edit drive update[edit]

  • Participation: Out of 31 people signed up for this drive so far, 22 have copy-edited at least one article. If you've signed up but haven't yet copy-edited any articles, every bit helps; if you haven't signed up yet, it's not too late. Join us!
  • Progress report: We're on track to meet our targets for the drive. We have reduced our target group of articles—November and December 2011—by over 50%, and 34 of the the 56 requests made in September and October this year have already been fulfilled. However, the rate of tagging for copy edit has increased, and this month we are just keeping the size of the backlog stable. So, all you copy editors, please do come along and help us!
  • The September 2012 Copy Edit of the Month Contest was won by Baffle gab1978 for his copy edit of Expulsion of the Acadians. Runner up was Gareth Griffith-Jones for his edit of I Could Fall in Love. Congratulations to both.
  • The October 2012 Copy Edit of the Month Contest is in the discussion and voting stage until midnight November 30 (UTC). You don't have to make a submission to vote!
  • November 2012 Copy Edit of the Month Contest is in the submissions stage until midnight November 30 (UTC), when discussion and voting begin.
  • Seasonal oversight: We had a slight fall from grace in the title of our last newletter, which mentioned the season in the northern hemisphere and thus got it wrong for the southern. Fortunately an observant GOCE member was ready to spring into action to advise us. Thanks! In future we'll stay meteorologically neutral.

  • Progress report: Thus far we have reduced the number of May/June 2012 articles to just 124 articles, so we're on the right track. Unfortunately, for the first time in GOCE history, the number of articles in the backlog has actually gone up during this drive. While all participants are currently doing a fine job, we just don't have as many of them as we have had in the past. We have over 500 editors on our mailing list, but only 18 editors who have done a copy edit for the drive. If you're receiving this newsletter, it's because you have an interest in copy editing. Join the drive! Even if you only copy edit one article, it helps. Imagine how much progress we could make if everyone chipped in just one article.

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. ArbCom Elections 2016: Voting now open![edit]

Scale of justice 2.svg Hello, Dtgriffith. Voting in the 2016 Arbitration Committee elections is open from Monday, 00:00, 21 November through Sunday, 23:59, 4 December to all unblocked users who have registered an account before Wednesday, 00:00, 28 October 2016 and have made at least 150 mainspace edits before Sunday, 00:00, 1 November 2016.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2016 election, please review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 22:08, 21 November 2016 (UTC)
