Akira Kurosawa[edit]

Hi Dylan,

I'm afraid I can't really tell you much more than what I said on the peer review. I pretty much said everything useful I have to say! I honestly don't know whether the article should go from a C to a B as I am not really very familiar with what makes a C or B article. And, as I said at peer review, I am only just starting out my career as an article reviewer, so I am not very confident to make judgements at the moment.

However, I do understand that you want to get the article to featured status and I have been looking at featured article candidates the last couple of days. So the points I made at peer review remain important, but primarily it's the "reference every sentence" thing that will probably give you the most work. Have you looked around to see if the Wikipedia:WikiProject_Films can give you feedback on how to improve the article?

In short, I wouldn't get too hung up on the B/C status. If I were in your shoes I would address the feedback you get at peer review and once you've done that put it forward for Featured Article status. I would normally say the next step would be to seek Good Article status, but the trouble is there is such a backlog there that you might miss your 100th anniversary deadline. If you put it forward for Featured and make sure you state your deadline and reasons for the deadline you might just get away with it :o)

Some Stuff to Consider Regarding Kurosawa Article[edit]

Hi, Dylanexpert. This is Olduch, also known as "Blah" at akirakurosawa.info. I just have some small suggestions for the Kurosawa article:

1. When you deleted the "Directorial approach" section you also deleted this photograph. I think we should keep that photo in the current article.

2. I think the title of this page should be "Major Criticisms" not "Summary of Major Criticisms."

3. According to Wikipedia's Manual of Style one should "Capitalize the first letter of the first word and any proper nouns in headings, but leave the rest in lower case (Rules and regulations, not Rules and Regulations)." I was going to make the change for you, but decided I should let you know instead. I'm a bit reluctant to make sweeping changes to somebody else's work.

Cheers.--Olduch (talk) 23:21, 30 July 2010 (UTC)

Thank You[edit]

All your points are well taken. I will make all those changes. When we have completed all the sections and have cut the article to a reasonable length, I will request your additional feedback. Dylanexpert (talk) 16:37, 31 July 2010 (UTC)

I would appreciate your weighing in with an opinion here: [1], thanks...Modernist (talk) 23:45, 31 July 2010 (UTC)

Orphaned non-free image File:Axial1.jpg[edit]

⚠

Thanks for uploading File:Axial1.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of "file" pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Eeekster (talk) 02:40, 6 August 2010 (UTC)

Photos[edit]

Hello. May I suggest that if you're going to swap photos out, don't take the ones that are there already and stack them? It's better if images for Kurosawa, or any article for that matter, are interspersed throughout the text to break up large portions of print – a daunting prospect for many readers. MarmadukePercy (talk) 01:33, 8 August 2010 (UTC)

I anticipated your objection to stacking the photos. Unfortunately, both these photos come from the same time period -- in fact, the same year, 1957 -- as the top photo is from the set of Throne of Blood and the bottom one almost certainly from the set of The Lower Depths (because Isuzu Yamada, who appeared in the film, stands behind AK and the set in the background is clearly the flophouse set from that film). I don't want to lose either photo. At the same time, I don't want to put either of them in an inappropriate place in the article chronologically. If you know a way around this problem, let me know.

Dylanexpert (talk) 01:39, 8 August 2010 (UTC)

I have no problem subbing in one photo for the next, if another photo is better. But what one must always keep in mind is your reader. Images help break up the text, aside from providing visual cues (linking text to images). Stacking photos in a large amount of text isn't helpful to the reader, and should be avoided. I'll take a look at it (not this evening), and see if there's a better solution. Also, the piece could use more graphics. Right now the text appears daunting. Take a look, for instance, at an article like Marshalsea. It may not appear to have much in common with a Japanese film director, but that piece addresses a complicated topic in an appealing visual way. The text is broken up, illustrated, and way more digestible. MarmadukePercy (talk) 02:50, 8 August 2010 (UTC)
I have taken your advice. I have also added more graphics, so the page looks a lot better now. (Note: I have revised only up to and including the "International recognition" subsection of the "Life and Career" section; for subsequent sections, I intend to add even more graphics.) I have tried to contact user Raul654, though his Discussion page, to get him to look at my Kurosawa page and advise me about how to get the page as a Today's Featured Article on September 20, 2010, the anniversary of Rashomon's win at the Venice Film Festival, but so far he hasn't responded. Do you know how I get his attention? Thanks. Dylanexpert (talk) 16:46, 15 August 2010 (UTC)
Thanks for your message. The page is looking better, with the blocks of text broken up a bit for easier reading. Regards, MarmadukePercy (talk) 03:28, 16 August 2010 (UTC)
The piece is looking better still. I like what you're doing with the graphics. It's much easier to read now. And some nice images. MarmadukePercy (talk) 03:46, 19 August 2010 (UTC)
Didn't mean to ignore your message. Am on something of a wikibreak right now. Will respond as soon as is feasible. MarmadukePercy (talk) 21:34, 22 August 2010 (UTC)

Kurosawa[edit]

You've done a fantastic job on this article, but you really need to go through it with a sharp knife: the style and level of detail is more fitting for a biography than for an encyclopaedia article. I see you are cutting it in places, so I've resisted the temptation to get out my big axe, but if you need a hand then drop me a note. Yomanganitalk 08:30, 26 August 2010 (UTC)

Thanks so much for your praise. I was planning to contact you anyway. (I recognized the dogs on your talk page!) You have no idea what a sharp knife I've taken to this article already! It used to be over 170 KB long; now, it's less than 140 KB. The problem with AK is that all his 30 films are extant and available on home video, so I have no choice but to deal with all of them in the "Life and career" section. You call Wikipedia an encyclopedia, but I think of the major pages -- the ones about the really *big* subjects -- as a hybrid between an article and a monograph: you can summarize the subject, but also go into some detail about important things, like an artist's style, as I have, which you really can't do in a print encyclopedia. I think that is Wikipedia's glory! However, I've tried to be a good boy about shortening the article. I've moved all tables to other pages, and I am going to prepare one final page -- List of Awards and Honors -- so that I can eliminate the succession box with awards at the bottom of the current page. I may even eliminate the whole "Influences" subsection, though that would make me weep.
I would certainly welcome your specific suggestions on how to cut it. However, looking at Today's Featured Articles in the past, I notice that the Michael Jackson article (for example), which was a TFA only two months ago, is 180 KB long -- longer than my article was *before* I started cutting it -- and Kurosawa's career was much longer than Jackson's. (As indicated in the "Current standing" subsection, AK is listed as one of the Top Ten film directors of all time, so it can't be argued that Jackson was a more important figure in the history of music than AK was in the history of movies.) Also, I've been working on this project day and night for almost 10 weeks, and I'm just about done with it. I want to nominate it as a Featured Article (expedited), and then, if it gets in right away, put it as a candidate for the TFA for September 10, 2010, the 59th anniversary of Rashomon's victory at the Venice Film Festival, which opened world film markets to Kurosawa's (and Asian) cinema. An impossible dream? You be the judge! Dylanexpert (talk) 14:51, 26 August 2010 (UTC)
I don't dare look at the Michael Jackson article now! I agree that in Wikipedia you've got the space to expand all this interesting bits that you'd never have room for in a paper version, but you also have the facility to spread them out over sub-articles (which might then appeal to the readers that you hook with a shorter, punchier, main article). A lot more of this article would sit quite happily in sub-articles with a just summary here. The influences and working methods are prime examples - you have what could be a substantial, standalone article on both, but they are hidden far down the Kurosawa article where only the most diehard fans will reach. You might also consider moving some of the film production information to the relevant film articles and (even more) heavily summarising his life. If you think it is useful I could have a go at slimming it down on a copy in my userspace. Two sections that stand out in need of attention in the article at the moment are the "Kurosawa-gumi" list and "Kurosawa's reputation among fellow filmmakers" (which is essentially a list of quotes). As for FA, I think you'll be hard pushed to get it through by September 10 - it's not the small, neat type of article that breezes through in a few days, and even if you could manage it there is already an article with some support lined up for Sept 10. Yomanganitalk 17:37, 26 August 2010 (UTC)
If you are going to FAC on Monday you'll hopefully get some feedback, so I'll hold off on cutting any more. I'm afraid that the sheer length will deter the casual FAC reviewers though, so you'll have to rely on a Japanese cinema enthusiast passing by. Yomanganitalk 00:03, 27 August 2010 (UTC)

File source problem with File:Akira_kurosawa_80s.jpg[edit]

Copyright-problem.svg

Thank you for uploading File:Akira_kurosawa_80s.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, please add a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a brief restatement of that website's terms of use of its content. However, if the copyright holder is a party unaffiliated from the website's publisher, that copyright should also be acknowledged.

If you have uploaded other files, consider verifying that you have specified sources for those files as well. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged per Wikipedia's criteria for speedy deletion, F4. If the image is copyrighted and non-free, the image will be deleted 48 hours after 12:37, 30 August 2010 (UTC) per speedy deletion criterion F7. If you have any questions or are in need of assistance please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. feydey (talk) 12:37, 30 August 2010 (UTC)

As it is too much of a hassle to argue this, I have deleted the image from my article and replaced it with a poster image. Dylanexpert (talk) 00:23, 31 August 2010 (UTC)

Kurosawa page as Featured Article[edit]

Hello there. First of all, I'd like to personally thank you for putting so much work to considerably improve upon the Akira Kurosawa article. Kurosawa is one of my favorite directors, and I am quite glad that he now has a Wikipedia article worthy of his genius. The sheer amount of time and energy you've spent on this project is just staggering.

I would be honored to be credited as a proofreader.--Olduch (talk) 05:42, 1 September 2010 (UTC)

Akira Kurosawa[edit]

Well done on trying get this article up to featured level. I should point out you don't have to clear edits with other people on non-full protected articles, including those going through the featured article process, this would be anti-wikipedia and you shouldn't ask people to clear edits with you. In order to help you I would advise against canvassing, [2] as this is against the rules at featured article candidates. In terms of image stacking i think there might be different interpretations of what constitutes a stack. Good luck with the nomination. Tom B (talk) 15:21, 5 September 2010 (UTC)

In regard of not canvassing, you stated that "I would greatly appreciate it if you would go to the...candidates page and support the nomination of..." You have to keep the request at least neutral but it might be stricter than that, Tom B (talk) 17:24, 5 September 2010 (UTC)

License tagging for File:Rashomon 1a.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Rashomon 1a.jpg. You don't seem to have indicated the license status of the image. Wikipedia uses a set of image copyright tags to indicate this information; to add a tag to the image, select the appropriate tag from this list, click on this link, then click "Edit this page" and add the tag to the image's description. If there doesn't seem to be a suitable tag, the image is probably not appropriate for use on Wikipedia.

For help in choosing the correct tag, or for any other questions, leave a message on Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. Thank you for your cooperation. --ImageTaggingBot (talk) 04:07, 13 September 2010 (UTC)

Kurosawa FAC[edit]

Hey. Thanks for your message on my Talk page. Reading your most recent in the FAC itself, I believe you've mistaken Hammersoft and Hamiltonstone to be the same "Ham" opposer. You might want to revise your comment accordingly. Best, Dan.—DCGeist (talk) 03:48, 14 September 2010 (UTC)

Ownership[edit]

Hi Dylanexpert. I note your recent edit summary: "I nominated the article and if I see fit to remove the image I will remove it." You don't own the article, and any editor is free to help improve it, including by removing images that they think do not assist the article and may violate WP policy. I am actually trying to help, by getting the debate focussed on the most significant images. I have also opened a thread for contributions on the article talk page. Please do not revert these image removals without first joining in that discussion. hamiltonstone (talk) 00:43, 15 September 2010 (UTC)

Replaceable fair use File:Kurosawa with Sword.jpg[edit]

Ambox warning pn.svg

Thanks for uploading File:Kurosawa with Sword.jpg. I noticed the description page specifies that the media is being used under a claim of fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first non-free content criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information or which could be adequately covered with text alone. If you believe this media is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the media description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per our non-free content policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Solid State Survivor (talk) 10:03, 24 October 2010 (UTC)

Thank you so much for "Late Spring". Aung Phyoe (talk) 13:39, 14 February 2012 (UTC)

re: Please review the article Late Spring[edit]

Hi. Thanks for the heads up. I'll try to look at this article in the near future. I've done some basic cleaning of the infobox and intro lines (removing overlinking, etc). Please post a note on the talk page of the Film Project, if you've not already done so. Lugnuts (talk) 14:30, 20 February 2012 (UTC)

And the film poster would be better in the infobox, than the screencap (I assume it's a screencap!) Thanks. Lugnuts (talk) 15:02, 20 February 2012 (UTC)
No probs. All these little edits count in the end. One thing I noticed was a mis-match of the terms "film" and "movie" throughout the article. It should be film, and not movie, unless it's a direct quote from someone. I'll spend more time on this. Lugnuts (talk) 18:45, 20 February 2012 (UTC)

Late Spring - peer review[edit]

Hi Dylanexpert, I see you that you have the above up for peer review and as such have recieved a number of comments from Tim riley, Crisco 1492 and some from myself. I also see that many of Tim's comments you have answered but as yet, have not indicated so on the PR archive page. You will need to answer these as other wise things could get very confusing. To indicate that the points have been addressed you can rule them off by using the following ... One day the sun came out and it was hot or simply say "fixed" or "done" etc (oh and remember to sign). If you knew this already just ignore me, and call me an interfering old so and so.  :-) -- Cassianto (talk) 11:32, 5 June 2012 (UTC)

Thank you for your comments. I have replied to Tim Riley's comments on his talk page and also, just now, on the PR archive page. I will respond to your suggestions within the next few days. Thanks. Dylanexpert (talk) 13:29, 5 June 2012 (UTC)

WP:OWN issue with Late Spring[edit]

Hello. This message is being sent to inform you that there is currently a discussion at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard regarding an issue with which you may have been involved. Thank you.

Late Spring FAC[edit]

Hey. Thanks for responding but I just wanted to say there was no need for the "That may be unsatisfactory to you, but there it is" comment. If there's no information about the filming process then of course that is acceptable. You only needed to say so. Surely I can't have sounded so impossible to please?! The whole comment beginning " Also people, particularly young people, seem to assume about old films..." was also pretty patronising. I happen to be pretty knowledgeable on film history. And usually, production information has been uncovered about classic films. Anyway I keep having fairly negative experiences with my reviews and have lost the motivation to do it, so I'll probably just back out of the Late Spring FAC. I stand by my comments and think they would be a big improvement to the page (and to Ozu's), but I'll leave it up to you whether to implement them or not. Who knows, other editors may not have a problem with the current article - it's only my opinion. Good luck anyway. --Lobo (talk) 16:30, 6 August 2012 (UTC)

  • I'm sorry if I seemed too touchy about your comments. I didn't mean to sound patronizing. Some reviewers have made me feel very defensive, so perhaps I was reacting to that, but you have been extremely gracious, and my replies to your comments indicate that I plan to follow most of your thoughtful suggestions. You have been very helpful and constructive and I thank you for that. Dylanexpert (talk) 17:37, 6 August 2012 (UTC)
    • That's okay, thanks. --Lobo (talk) 16:48, 7 August 2012 (UTC)

Disambiguation link notification for August 26[edit]

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Cheri Honkala, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Independence Mall (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Million Pearl Award[edit]

Hello, I apologize for bothering you. As you have created List of awards and honors given to Akira Kurosawa and you specialize in Japanese cinema, I would have liked to ask you if you have more information regarding the 'Million Pearl Award' of the Roei Association in Tokyo (its name in Japanese, websites with the list of recipients etc.). One of the films I'm working on here got the prize, so I'm searching for the details. I hope you can help me. Thank you very much anyway. Bahavd Gita (talk) 17:12, 17 September 2012 (UTC)
