infobox generator broken[edit]

Thanks for you extremely useful NRHP infobox generator tool. I know I'm not the only one who uses it, and it's been a great help. That said, it's broken:
Want to get the infobox for 87002538

Warning: mysql_query(): Access denied for user 'root'@'localhost' (using password: NO) in /home4/elkman/public_html/nrhp/common.php on line 127

Warning: mysql_query(): A link to the server could not be established in /home4/elkman/public_html/nrhp/common.php on line 127 Invalid query: select sigyear from sigyear where refnum = 87002538 limit 1Access denied for user 'root'@'localhost' (using password: NO)
Queries for city and county seem to work fine. Magic♪piano 12:35, 16 March 2015 (UTC)

I've finally fixed this. The code wasn't properly establishing a database connection when querying by reference number. --Elkman (Elkspeak) 19:52, 3 April 2015 (UTC)

Thanks for fixing that! This query yields a similar message. Magic♪piano 14:35, 4 May 2015 (UTC)

NRHP Query down?[edit]

Hey Elkman --- seems like NRHP Query has been down all day. Just a simple notification. Cheers--Pubdog (talk) 00:36, 14 May 2015 (UTC)

Hmm. I don't know what would have made that happen. I just tried it and it appears to work correctly. I haven't been doing any changes or messing around with the site, so I'm not sure what happened. --Elkman (Elkspeak) 05:07, 14 May 2015 (UTC)
All is well now. Cheers,--Pubdog (talk) 10:40, 14 May 2015 (UTC)

NR Focus redesign[edit]

Maybe you already know this, but NPS Focus has been significantly redesigned, and the URLs for nominations are all different. At least for now, the old URLs still work; the Old Fort Mitchell HD nomination still exists at http://focus.nps.gov/pdfhost/docs/NRHP/Text/89001170.pdf, but if you go through their search interface, it's at http://focus.nps.gov/GetAsset?assetID=a2ccc1d5-4c79-4cff-9443-d6d86db9d3e4. The new system is completely unsystematic, as far as we can tell. However, there's a new simple way to get to their records for a place: http://focus.nps.gov/AssetDetail/NRIS/89001170 takes you to a page with links to both nomination and images, along with other information about the property. NRHP locations[edit]

Do you remember where you got the original location information for NRHP listings, that is, the source for the location your infobox creator puts out? I can't find it in the .dbf files I downloaded (from the 2009 version), and the old files aren't there anymore. Just looking to see where they came from, and what format they were in (UTM or lat/long). Thanks. Generic1139 (talk) 20:28, 5 November 2015 (UTC)

Discussion related to the infobox generator[edit]

Earlier today, I started a discussion related to modifying {{infobox NRHP}} — if successful, this will result in the removal of the |Governing body= parameter entirely. The proposal is merely to remove the template's ability to recognise the parameter, i.e. |Governing body= will have no more effect than |nfbsourbgdbhuodr= would, but it wouldn't have any harmful effect either. As a result, should it pass, you'll be able to remove that parameter from the generator if you feel like it, but doing nothing won't have any effect, either. See WT:NRHP#Governing body in infobox for the discussion, if you're interested. Nyttend (talk) 03:17, 26 December 2015 (UTC)

Disambiguation link notification for February 3[edit]

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited S. Edward Hall House, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Community Chest. Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Request changes to infobox generator[edit]

Once again, thank you for your very useful tool. I'd like to request some modest changes to the infobox generator, partly as a result of the Wikipedia:Coordinates in infoboxes initiative. This work is deprecating the individual lat/lon fields in infoboxes in preferences to a single coordinate parameter whose value uses the {{coord}} template. If you could change the generator to produce this (see e.g. here for example, but a bot is editing many NRHP articles), that would be a boon.

A second change would be to add "#USA" to the locmapin parameter (after the state, if it's actually a state), allowing for the user-selectable map display. Magic♪piano 14:07, 6 December 2016 (UTC)

  • OK, I've changed the coordinate display to the {{Coord}} format, so it should be current. Thanks for the heads-up. --Elkman (Elkspeak) 22:02, 11 December 2016 (UTC)
Thanks for the quick turnaround! Feel free to drop a line at the page linked above if you notice anything unusual with the conversions that the bot is doing. – Jonesey95 (talk) 04:34, 12 December 2016 (UTC)

Your Infobox generator[edit]

Hi, I have seen your NRHP Query site, which is very useful, and i was wondering how it works. to be specific i want to create something similar to work with NHLE data from here: https://historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/data-downloads/. it would create a basic infobox using the historic sites infobox template but would otherwise work in a similar way to what you have done. I have a basic understanding of PHP but some pointers would be greatly appreciated. A Guy into Books (talk) 21:43, 13 August 2017 (UTC)

NRHP infobox changes[edit]

Hi, there were a couple discussion threads, since archived, at wt:NRHP; this note is just to pull out a couple items. One was whether you could fix it so that "locmapin = STATE" always appears, again. Or "locmapin=STATE#USA", i don't care. Often or perhaps always when you don't have any coordinates, it does not appear, and often this happens also when you do have coordinates. I don't know what triggers it.

I think my other leading request, if you are making any changes, would be for you to put "source:NRIS2013a" into any coordinates that your system does add, to help us sort out which coordinates have been improved or not. My requesting that, with some more detail, was in since-archived Wikipedia talk:WikiProject National Register of Historic Places/Archive 66#NRHP 2014 database loaded. FYI, the other perhaps-easy-to-address changes were:

    • Also where your NRIS2013a data does not include coordinates (which is fine, as we often/usually have coordinates figured out some other way), could you possibly please include a commented out line for the coordinates, as in:
<!--- | coordinates = {{coord||source:|name=Dr. Nathan Gaither House|display=inline,title}} --->
or just
<!--- | coordinates = {{coord||source:|display=inline,title}} --->
to make it easier for an editor like me to put in coords (probably copy-pasting from the county list-article).
    • Also where the NRHP reference is now included (thanks for that!) the current intro is:
Optional reference text:
but there have been a case or two where the reference didn't work and editor(s) have pasted it in then not checked it, so I wonder if you could modify the intro to something like:
Optional reference text (please confirm this works and consider modifying as appropriate to describe the linked text and photos, or please delete it; please don't leave a bad reference displaying in mainspace.):

Thanks again for your other changes done. Again, even without any further refinement, the system is working quite well. --Doncram (talk) 20:17, 31 May 2018 (UTC)

Sorry for the delayed reply -- I've been rather busy now that I have a new job. As far as the coordinate source goes, I don't have any coordinates from the NRIS 2013 database. It didn't come with any coordinates, so I'm leaving the old reference in there. As far as your other questions go, I'll take a look at them a little later when I have time. --Elkman (Elkspeak) 21:11, 8 June 2018 (UTC)
Thanks for reply and notification to my Talk page. About coordinates, your collective database does have coordinates in it, although not for all listings, and although I hear you that they are not from the newish NRIS 2013 download. Whatever the label is exactly, I would like for there to be a label signifying that the coordinates came from your collective database. Make it "source:Elkman2009" or "source:Elkman2018" or "source:NRIS2009a" or "source:NPS2009unconfirmed" or "source:NRISoriginal" or any combination of letters and numbers at all, whatever would be short and perhaps descriptive. Where did you get the coordinates from, that are included / how do you put it into words, yourself? I would think it is okay to call it "source:NRIS2009a" because you had it when the 2009a version of NRIS was out, or "source:NRIS2013a" because it is what you have available now, corresponding to your copy of NRIS 2013a database. Random letters like "Source:ABCDE12345" would actually be okay, though not very descriptive. This won't display to readers. It will just be in the coord templates and available for NRHP editors sometimes to check, and especially available for programmers to use to identify which coordinates came in from your collective database, vs. which ones have been positively checked and/or refined by NRHP editors using Google satellite view or other approaches. One application would be for the wp:NRHPPROGRESS page to display how many NRHPs in each county have original vs. refined vs. unknown coordinates. It would help in the overall initiative to improve coordinates, if you would provide your support for the conceptual idea that a source can be given. Sorry if this is Too Long; it's just I feel I have a failure to communicate, sorry.--Doncram (talk) 21:32, 8 June 2018 (UTC)
Argh. To be clear(?), for Saint Martin's Catholic Church, your current system gives:
|coordinates = {{coord|40|21|53|N|98|11|42|W|region:US_type:landmark|name=Saint Martin's Catholic Church|display=inline,title}}
I want it to have a source label (say that label is "Elkman2018"), as in:
|coordinates = {{coord|40|21|53|N|98|11|42|W|source:Elkman2018|region:US_type:landmark|name=Saint Martin's Catholic Church|display=inline,title}}
And for other items where your collective database doesn't have any coordinates, to help out in a smaller way with something like:
<!--- | coordinates = {{coord||source:||N||W|source:|region:US_type:landmark|name=Saint Martin's Catholic Church|display=inline,title}} --->
I think I have failed to communicate, argh. --Doncram (talk) 21:40, 8 June 2018 (UTC)
