[edit]

Not trying to feed the trolls, but does the user have beef with you or something? NoobThreePointOh (talk) 04:06, 5 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]

Who are you referring to? I removed a couple templates today, but I don't think either was motivated by any personal animus, it's just a pretty normal content dispute. —Ganesha811 (talk) 04:07, 5 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, I was talking about that user you reverted earlier on Feeding Our Future. No worries though, I was a bit confused. :| NoobThreePointOh (talk) 04:09, 5 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Crey33 (15:23, 9 February 2026)

[edit]

Hi Ganesha - my draft was rejected for not having enough citations to prove the "notable person" criteria. Do you have any tips on strengthening the citations? Is it typically the amount of citation or the notability of the actual publication being cited? --Crey33 (talk) 15:23, 9 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]

In general, what we're looking for is *in-depth* coverage from independent, reliable sources. Check out the WP:GNG for an explanation of the policy. If someone is on the threshold of notability, it's fine if their article remains in draft form for a while until more sources become available that demonstrate notability. —Ganesha811 (talk) 14:53, 12 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Hello, Ganesha811.

In File:World railway network.svg, can you add the railway line between Bam and Zahedan within Iran and the railway line between Iran and Turkmenistan, add the Polatlı–Konya high-speed railway line and the Ankara–Sivas high-speed railway line in Turkey, and add the Haramain High Speed Railway line in Saudi Arabia?

Yours sincerely, Kurcke (talk) 13:29, 10 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]

You have been blocked from editing for a period of 24 hours for edit warring. Once the block has expired, you are welcome to make useful contributions.
During a dispute, you should first try to discuss controversial changes and seek consensus. If that proves unsuccessful, you are encouraged to seek dispute resolution, and in some cases it may be appropriate to request page protection.
If you believe that there are good reasons for being unblocked, please review Wikipedia's guide to appealing blocks, then add the following text to the bottom of your talk page: {{unblock|reason=Your reason here ~~~~}}.  ~ ToBeFree (talk) 19:56, 11 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Hi! I'm not going to appeal, because it's only 24 hours and I think it'll be fine to take some time away from engaging with those pages. But could you explain the rationale for this block a little further? I haven't violated the WP:3RR. While I have made reversions to the pages in question, I've also been engaging with the talk pages, starting sections and discussions, making non-revert improvements to try to reach consensus; in general, trying to act in good faith to find consensus and improve the articles. I'd appreciate a more detailed explanation of your admin action. —Ganesha811 (talk) 19:59, 11 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Ganesha811, thanks for asking. I found the situation through an edit warring noticeboard thread with a ping referring to a warning I had closed the previous report about the same editor with. It was a warning to both sides and it was ... checking the article ... about the same topic. Just on a different page. I had a look at the article's history, it was already semi-protected in response to disruption and all that achieved was the disruption now coming from editors all too experienced to be affected even by extended-confirmed protection. After verifying that extended-confirmed protection made no sense and the edit war was persistent over a week, I decided against full protection because any protection duration would have been too long to be practicable or too short to have an effect. And with a thought of "you should know better" for each time I placed a block, I blocked everyone involved. Those who had a history of such blocks for longer. That's all. 😐 ~ ToBeFree (talk) 21:02, 11 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, uh, I should address your 3RR point. Mh. I have a standard response to this, not sure if I'm being Captain Obvious now, but ... edit warring is not limited to violations of the three-revert rule and not only did you actually edit war, you also – I didn't verify this but went by your words – originally made the addition that was being edit warred about. If I see correctly, noone made more reverts than you, the content came from you ... There's no way for me to justify sparing you from a block everyone receives, only perhaps a discussion to have about whether blocking was the right decision at all. I'm comparatively open to that, but not really to any kind of "I didn't edit war" defense. Not in this case. ~ ToBeFree (talk) 21:05, 11 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]
(correction + edit conflict: counting again, Ethiopian Epic reverted four times, you added the content four times – so by the number of reverts, there was someone making more reverts. But that's also the editor leaving the incident with the longest block.) ~ ToBeFree (talk) 21:15, 11 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the explanation. Sure, I'm aware that edit warring isn't limited to the 3RR bright line. I did make the original addition, but as I noted, that was literally months ago. I guess what I'm saying is that blocks are supposed to be preventative, not punitive. I'm assuming the article under discussion is Feeding Our Future and that you didn't look at 2020s Minnesota fraud scandals, since I haven't edited that one in a week. For FoF, I made a single revert today, and two 7 days ago. My other edits were unrelated changes or attempts to expand and address concerns raised on the talk page (where I have also been engaged in discussion). Is that edit warring? I can see why you acted as you did; there has certainly been an edit war going on, and I have been a participant in that war, so yeah, I'll take my medicine and accept the block. I get that this falls within a reasonable admin's discretion. But this one feels more punitive than preventative. —Ganesha811 (talk) 21:15, 11 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Oh right, now that you say it, there's a third page involved about that topic. What a chaos. Yes, this was only about the Feeding Our Future article. I'm not sure if perhaps even more exist, I just went by what the report was about. And as you note, there was no recent edit warring on the other pages as far as I can see. Nick Shirley, 2020s Minnesota fraud scandals, Feeding Our Future.
Thaaat said, I now see that we had interacted about 2020s Minnesota fraud scandals a month ago. As administrators. That's interesting because it influences my view on the situation in two ways. It adds a component of "WP:INVOLVED?" I didn't have in mind when blocking and that would perhaps have made me avoid the block to avoid an impression of it being a form of revenge. That said, there's not really something to perform a revenge for from my side; it was me who had reversed your admin action. Mh. Not sure how you see this. If I'm still fine to judge the situation, that's the second way it influences my view: It adds a component of "the same editor edit warred about the same topic elsewhere before and even did so in an (understandable and forgiven) misuse of their tools." That would confirm the need of a sitewide block somehow?
It's all pretty chaotic. Regarding prevention and punishment, if interpreted very strictly, personal attacks should never lead to a timed block. They should only one day lead to a sudden indefinite block if warnings have failed. There should be no timed personal attack blocks at all, as their only lasting effect is caused by punitive aspects. It's similar for edit warring blocks, especially three-revert-rule 24-hour blocks. They ... "encourage a more productive, congenial editing style within community norms". Is that punitive? Do all timed blocks have a punitive aspect?
Meh. ~ ToBeFree (talk) 21:33, 11 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think there's any reason to regard you as involved here, you haven't engaged with content on any of those pages, just acted as a neutral admin to keep things flowing. No concerns there. And yeah, this and related discussions have been going on over multiple pages since December, with occasional spasms of edit warring, but on the whole things have kept moving. Stuff gets added, improved, tweaked, the discussion moves on to the next issue. The usual Wikipedia process. I agree with your broader philosophical point about preventative vs. punitive blocks. Anyway, thanks for engaging and hope our next interaction is under better circumstances. —Ganesha811 (talk) 21:42, 11 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Link to our previous interaction for general reference. —Ganesha811 (talk) 21:45, 11 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you very much and the same hope from me. 🙂🌻 ~ ToBeFree (talk) 21:56, 11 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]
My apologies for butting into a discussion that doesn't involve me, but I wanted to leave a quick note about my perception of this admin decision:
(1) I was very surprised to be blocked. I've never been blocked before on Wikipedia, so it was a new experience.
(2) I experienced the block as 'obviously' punitive; the only thing it accomplished beyond what a talk page message would have was encouraging me to step back from Wikipedia for a few days. I suppose that was the point?
(3) I generally follow WP:1RR for the same content. As I recall my actions, I made two reverts: (1) the first revert was to encourage WP:BRD, since the content had already been removed once and a talk page discussion started to establish consensus for the removal of that content (2) the next day (16 hours later) the removal of newly-added sourced content by someone who hadn't participated in the talk page discussion. Both of these actions still seem reasonable to me, leading me to believe I don't understand Wikipedia policy.
(4) I of course have no idea if the admin action was appropriate, but I certainly found it very discouraging. I already hate contributing to politics-adjacent articles; this experience suggests to me I need to expand my "avoid" zone further. I've removed the page in question from my watchlist.
Cheers, Suriname0 (talk) 16:08, 13 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Hello! That's a real pity. The more editors who contribute to an article, the better it gets, generally. But I get it; there are also some topic areas I try to avoid due to the difficulty of engaging constructively (Israel-Palestine, for one). I agree that your actions were reasonable. @ToBeFree, pinging you since this is not your talk page but mine so you may not be aware. —Ganesha811 (talk) 16:26, 13 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the feedback and the ping. ~ ToBeFree (talk) 16:36, 13 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]
I have now removed the block; it lost its purpose at very very least when the page was fully protected. Which is what I should probably have done instead. We'll see if and how it continues after the 48 hours of full protection expire. There's a point when further participation in the same edit war after full protection can't really be resolved in different ways but that point is not (yet?) reached and I should probably have at least tried full protection instead of blocking anyone. Sorry. ~ ToBeFree (talk) 07:08, 12 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for lifting the block. I've encouraged others to weigh in on the talk page to help reach consensus, as up to this point it's really been just me, Luna, and Astaire engaged there. —Ganesha811 (talk) 12:01, 12 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Yuhyu078 (14:40, 12 February 2026)

[edit]

Can I ask how to pinpoint which part of this articles need additional citation? And who can make the decision for when the warning flag can be removed? Thank you. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lee_Jun-young --Yuhyu078 (talk) 14:40, 12 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]

In general, every sentence or group of sentences in an article should be cited to a reliable source. You can use the User:Phlsph7/HighlightUnreferencedPassages script to highlight them. Anyone can remove the template, but it shouldn't be removed until the issues it describes are actually fixed. —Ganesha811 (talk) 14:52, 13 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]

Clarification on article edit

[edit]

Hi Ganesha811,

I noticed your recent revert on the Todd Wiseman Jr. article and wanted to better understand your concerns so I can edit in line with Wikipedia standards.

My intention was to summarize Wiseman Jr.’s most notable work per WP:LEAD and WP:BIO, but I understand your point that the article may need tighter focus and greater summarization. I’m very open to trimming or restructuring content and would appreciate any guidance on what you feel should be condensed or moved.

Thanks for your time, and I appreciate your help in improving the article. ReubenRugendo (talk) 10:48, 13 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! We appreciate your disclosure that you are a paid editor with a COI. You should also disclose this on your user page - please follow the guidelines at Wikipedia:Paid-contribution disclosure. As to the Wiseman article, I think the best procedure would be for you to propose changes on the talk page, which other editors can then accept, modify, or reject. That will be more successful than you editing the article directly. —Ganesha811 (talk) 14:55, 13 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Ganesha811,
Thanks for the guidance. I’ll add the disclosure to my user page and will propose changes on the article talk page rather than editing directly.
Appreciate your help. ReubenRugendo (talk) 08:37, 14 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Hello! I have a question about copyright. I took a photo of a small monument on a college campus, and while I would be happy to have the photo be available for anyone to use, I'm not sure if the subject of the image is copyrighted or not. Does the monument count as a sculpture? For context, the page I'd like to upload the photo to already has several images of similar/identical monuments at other college campuses. --CthosEris (talk) 19:55, 19 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]

Hi and welcome! I think the best place to ask is the Help Desk on Wikimedia Commons. They deal with these issues a lot. What is the monument/campus? —Ganesha811 (talk) 19:58, 19 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]
It's the Gravity Research Foundation monument at Colby College CthosEris (talk) 20:01, 19 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]
The page Commons:Freedom of panorama may also be helpful. Copyright issues can be tricky to figure out. —Ganesha811 (talk) 20:11, 19 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you! It looks like, since it was "published" (made available to the public) before 1978, as long as it does not have a notice on it somewhere that it is under copyright protection, it should be okay. I'll have to go back and check later haha, there isn't a copyright notice on the side visible in the image but there could be one on the back I suppose. Maybe merge?

[edit]

Hi @Ganesha811, I really appreciate the work you've been doing and thank you for implementing my suggestion. I have another one. I think 2026 United States military buildup in the Middle East should be merged into Prelude to the 2026 Iran conflict. The prelude article already covers the build-up and having the military buildup as a standalone article makes little sense to me. Shaan SenguptaTalk 16:51, 2 March 2026 (UTC)[reply]

I won't have time to do much more today, but if you think it's a good idea (I agree after looking at both again), you could try a WP:BOLD blank-and-redirect of that article (see WP:BLAR), copying over the relevant content and redirecting the shell. If someone reverts that, you could start a formal merge proposal. In general, I say go for it! —Ganesha811 (talk) 16:54, 2 March 2026 (UTC)[reply]
I would've loved to do so but it's ten-thirty at night at my place (time to go to sleep). And I've some pending work to do on Commons (my main project now) tomorrow morning.
