Fair-use images in userpace[edit]

Not to spoil the happy occasion of your promotion too much, but Image:Harry Potter's Books.jpg (of which Image:Glen thankyou.gif is a derivative) is a copyvio, and about to get deleted from Commons as such. This makes Image:Glen thankyou.gif liable for deletion as well; more to the point, it's now (at best) a fair-use image that you've just added to nearly a hundred pages in userspace. This is sort of a Bad Thing™. ;-) Kirill Lokshin 01:14, 26 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your message, as you are no doubt aware the Potter image was originally tagged as GFDL. If you'd been to commons you'd have seen I'd already removed that component some 5 hours before your message when I saw the tag had been queried (you may have to clear your cache). Thanks for the heads up anyway, - GIen 06:16, 26 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, ok; must have been a stale cache on my part. Sorry about that! Kirill Lokshin 16:09, 26 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

A question...[edit]

Hi there! Can I ask you something? I noticed that you were recently given the sysop bit, but your contributions only go back to 23 August 2006 on this account. Were you known as a different user before? --HappyCamper 15:17, 26 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Ah, I see. I hope you don't mind my curiosity. I was a bit puzzled for while after I noticed this account has a capital I in it, as opposed to a lowercase l. --HappyCamper 15:27, 26 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi GIen,

You speedy deleted Jennifer England, but it still has an open AfD on the article. Could you please close it? ColourBurst 19:42, 26 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

your warning[edit]

I have some issues with your warnings.

You have listed several of my previous spats as bad behaviour without actually reading into the context of each comment.

Context doesn't matter when dealing with personal attacks and incivility. There is no excuse for the former (as quoted at the top of the page), and the latter is expected everywhere.

Please explain how disagreeing with someone about the definition of "country" is breaking the rules?

It was not the fact that you disagree with someone that is the problem. it is the way you went about "solving" it that is - see dispute resolution for some handy hints on achieving a comprimise between users without all the yucky personal attacks, incivility and blanking of messages.

You also fail to aknowledge any of the time and effort I have put into contributing to articles on wikipedia. I may get into disagreements with people, but I am hardly public enemy #1.

Unfortunately, being a good editor does not make you exempt from following Wikipedia procedures. Your edits are, on the whole, very good, however your dispute resolution methods are not quite as.

Thanks.

Also. I was given WRONG information about the deleting of my discussion page, by an Admin. Why is that my fault? Snowbound 05:43, 27 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

A diff please?

NOTE:

Said user ignored my questions, but decided to edit my post...adding my sig. Snowbound 08:58, 27 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Unfortunately, administrators like Glen don't have the time to sit down and respond to every message immediately. The reason he added your signature was to tell everyone who posted the above statement, per the Wikipedia guideline about signing posts on talk pages. Or, he could have been contemplating whether to block you - I'm not 100% sure.
All italics @ one indent (like this paragraph) made by me - Daniel.Bryant 11:17, 27 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for getting back to me, sorry for the delay in my reply. Just quickly, I in fact did read the context of each message, and I am aware of your legitimate edits; The fact is, I don't see anywhere near the levels of incivility nor rash bursts of aggression from anyone else - and if there is I feel its a response to the level you have escalated it to. I'll record and say in fact that it was your good contributions that saved you from an indefinite block. They are great and I thank you for them. But (as Daniel has pointed out) I shouldn't be able to pull 8 or 9 counts of uncivil behavior from the last few weeks from anyone. And, it is no ones fault that you don't know policy but your own. Above are copious examples of you quoting facets of it to others, so that's no excuse.
As I said, your encyclopedic contributions are awesome, keep them up, and remember to always assume good faith. We are all here with the same goal after all, thanks - GIen 14:20, 27 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

VP Access[edit]

Hi, Glen. I've done a name change per [1]. Can you please update my access for VP if it doesn't happen automatically? Thanks. --After Midnight 0001 11:33, 28 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, I can't try it at work, but I'll give it a shot tonight and let you know. BTW, it looks like there was no way for me to move my monobook.js after my change (it won't even let me edit it to do a db-owner), so I just did a copy/paste, but I assume that the old one doesn't need to be there anymore. Could you by chance delete it for me if/when your admin bit is working? Thanks. --After Midnight 0001 13:40, 28 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I've tried it now and 1.30 won't work for me (It says "You are not on the user list."), but 1.22 looks fine. I have made several edits with 1.22 to confirm that it was working. I'm guessing that you may have only updated the access list for the current version, rather than there being a problem with the beta (which you gave me on Aug 16), but let me know if you think there is something else that is wrong or when to try out 1.30 again. On another matter, I am wondering what your thought is about changing my signature on old edits so that they show my new name and point directly to my new page(s) instead of showing my old "identity". This would mostly mean changing my edits on Talk:, User talk:, and (closed) xfD's. Is this worth it, or should I just leave them as is? Do you have any similar plans? I have already moved my user subpages and db-userreq'ed them --After Midnight 0001 22:36, 28 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah I was aware I'd done that and I apologize. Last night for about 3 hours I was the only active sysop in the IRC channel and I could barely keep up. I just checked my block log and over a 3 or 4 hour period I block over 50 accounts, and thankfully that was the only IP address that I'd blocked indefinity (all be it accidental)[3] Was a crazy night - especially for my first week and no doubt there's bound to be some mistakes. Apologies once again and thanks for the heads up - GIen 00:14, 30 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Long-Overdue RfA Thanks from Alphachimp[edit]

Thanks for your support in my not-so-recent RfA, which was successful with a an overwhelmingly flattering and deeply humbling total of 138/2/2 (putting me #10 on the RfA WP:100). I guess infinite monkey theorem has been officially proven. Chimps really can get somewhere on Wikipedia.

With new buttons come great responsibility, and I'll try my best to live up to your expectations. If you need assistance with something, don't hesitate to swing by my talk page or email me (trust me, I do respond :)). The same goes for any complaints or comments in regard to my administrative actions. Remember, I'm here for you.

(Thanks go to Blnguyen for the incredible photo to the right.) alphaChimp laudare 05:57, 3 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I really like your userpage. Keep up the good work. By the way, I'm never on IRC because of a networking issue, not because I hate you guys. To rephrase two of the finest moments: "LOL" and "JOOOOOOOIIIIIIINNNNNNNNN USSSSSSS". I'm so glad you're an admin. regards, alphaChimp laudare 05:57, 3 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

CENSORSHIP[edit]

I am writing this not to be rude nor confrontational. I am way past that.

It was my understanding that Wikipedia is a site where facts are posted. That illusion for me at least is no more.

I posted my TRUE life experiences at Calcutta Boys'School ("CBS") when as an orphan, I was put under the care of that sadistic principal, Clifford Hicks which, regretfully, the moderator(s) saw fit to censor. As an orphan with no one to protect you, life in CBS was hardly a bed of roses in Calcutta Boys' School, let me tell you!

Contrary to the moderator's opinion, (and we all have one), my life experience isn't nonsense as he so elequently "warns". My postings were NOT intended to be inflamatory - however, if deleted seems biased to only allow fluffy "details" to be published and not show the abusive side of this now deceased individual. My postings ARE true and honest - and no amount of deletion can remove those memories.

If you have not seen the movies "Salaam Bombay", "Water" or "Monsoon Wedding", please do, to catch my drift. Then you may understand.

Enjoy Spring down under!

Sincerely,

BRYAN FEOL

Vandalism[edit]

How often can Vandalism warning be upgraded?

On User talk:67.174.181.155 I can see he got test1 warning on 8:52, while I can see on Special:Contributions/67.174.181.155 only his edits from after 10:50 (b/c they were reverted?). vandals and blocks[edit]

Hey Glen! I just thought I might give you a heads up. This computer network is from our High School, and I think alot of the vandalism to a seemingly random list of sites is from our students and/or faculty. I guess the technology registers these changes from all the computers here in the school, because I have seen the messages and warnings from more than one terminal. Any recomendations or ideas on what to do to stop this? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 166.109.224.51 (talkcontribs) - 04:39, September 9 2006 (UTC)

I just saw more vandalism from an account I had recently blocked. The edit list in user contributions has the edits occuring at 14-15:00 on the 19th, today. The bot reverted it at 9:30, and you posted at 9:50 or so. Can you explain these times to me? From what I can see they were reverted before being edited, and edited in the future! Even converting for GMT doesn't seem to explain this. Maury 12:03, 19 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Orriel Smith[edit]

Many thanks fo ryour advice Glen.I am used to Auckland being a small place but was quite surprised to have a kiwi reply!

That said,I sent William Dart (who does the classical music reviews for The Herald) a copy of "Clukatora" and he wrote back advising he had just received the one he ordered off Orriel's web site.He enjoyed it so much he played it on his radio programme.

There some outstanding reviews of the CD from serious magazines as they recognise that behind the spoof (Florence Foster Jenkins barnyard style) there is much clever thought and an outstanding voice.

I am in fact overseas till the end of november and will readress the submission then-if you would bear with me on that it would be greatly appreciated.

Can you confirm that you are affiliated with DigitalDog.com[edit]

Hello Glen,

I got your message but I am afraid that the proper way to reply wasn't readily apparent.

I *AM* DigitalDog.com and while the article I posted does appear on that site, it is MY article in MY own words. My understanding is that I did have the right to post it here as it is not any copyright violation.

How would you like me to confirm my ownership/affiliation with DigitalDog.com

PS - By the way, Lucy is a jerk. She just wrote me threatening to take away posting privs for having posted copyright material instead of inquiring if I had the right to post it. This all based on the fact that I cut and pasted the article into Wikipedia. While that COULD be an indication of a violation it could also indicate that someone cut and pasted from a valid source (like their own word processor, etc.). I was not impressed with my first contact as she wrote me before you did and interupted my save as a 'possible violation' and then kept pressing the point without finding anything out.
