Uncletom and Ghorpaapi

Tomorrow is Friday! Yay! Now, I have a couple of questions. (I know, I ask a lot of questions.)

  1. Uncletom is having trouble with vandalism. Either I made a mistake, he has made a mistake, or he's just been reverting test edits/random edits. What do I do?
  2. Regarding Ghorpaapi, will me and JP be guiding him/her through the course with you peering over our shoulders? When will adoption begin? Did you distribute "instructions" to JP, such as "not letting me take too much control by grading tests.) Face-wink.svg I'm assuming that he will grade the tests and I will do the technical tasks, like archiving lessons, updating grades chart, etc.

It's good to ask questions, right? ~~JHUbal27 00:32, 19 April 2013 (UTC)

  • JHUbal, I will set that up over the weekend sometime and will try to check in on Uncletom tonight. Thanks for your conscientiousness. Go Phightins! 01:16, 19 April 2013 (UTC)

Thome FAC

Happy to look, and I've made a start. No major issues, I don't think. I've done some copy-editing rather than list a load of fussy points. I'll let you take a look before continuing, in case I'm messing anything up. Feel free to revert anything you don't like. Sarastro1 (talk) 22:12, 19 April 2013 (UTC)

Your GAN for Arlen Specter is under review

I just thought I'd let you know that your GAN for Arlen Specter is under review by DCI2026. Maybe you've been too busy to take a look at it, but I thought it couldn't hurt to remind you in case you forgot. Perhaps part of the problem is that they started the review on March 17 but didn't post anything substantial until March 30. Anyway, please take a look at it when you get a chance. AmericanLemming (talk) 07:29, 21 April 2013 (UTC)

I know that he started it, but there wasn't anything to address. He told me he'd be finishing it soon, so perhaps that's what he did last night. Thanks. Go Phightins! 10:55, 21 April 2013 (UTC)

Will you be able to find the time to hand out the next award? ```Buster Seven Talk 18:32, 20 April 2013 (UTC)

  • Thanks. Soni informs me that he will not have the time to create the userbox. I, like you, am all thumbs. I may "play" with it this evening but no promises as to the result. What I'll do is copy, move to a sandbox, remove last awaardees info and replace it with this weeks awardee. It's all the "visible on multiple pages and permanent on the awardees page' stuff the scares me. Thanks...cream rises. ```Buster Seven Talk 15:34, 21 April 2013 (UTC)
  • Haha. Good luck. I did notify him/her. Go Phightins! 15:35, 21 April 2013 (UTC)

Re:WikiCup scoring

Sorry, I'd be inclined to say that that doesn't count as significant work; it's a long article, and worth a few bonus points, but you've only done some slight reordering and added some references. Important work, certainly, but I'd be inclined not to say significant. J Milburn (talk) 08:42, 22 April 2013 (UTC)

  • I update it when I come across something amusing on-wiki. Have anything? Go Phightins! 00:54, 23 April 2013 (UTC)

I like baseball, but I've never been a mega fan so I don't follow the day-to-day information (In fact, I probably couldn't name more than three players on the roster Morneau, Mauer, and my personal favorite, Willingham to be exact). I'm not exactly a fair weather fan, because I always support the team, but I don't actively follow them unless they're doing really good, so I'm probably on the cusp of that. It also doesn't help that I'm in college. I'm fairly busy and I don't get to watch any games (although this time last year, I was following them much more closely). In any case, I'm digressing a ton. I was making fun of my roommate because he went to a Phillies game and they almost lost to the Royals (and were beat in the other two games of the series). I guess that's not so much of a thing to make fun of them for, since the Royals are leading the division. What's up with that? The Twins aren't doing horrendously right now either, I've got no classes to worry about (aside from tomorrow) so I'll need to pick it up and start following them a bit more closely. Taking a digression from the stuff unrelated to Wikipedia, there are empty tables at 2013 Minnesota Twins season#Detailed records and 2013 Kansas City Royals season#Detailed records that look pretty bad. Do you think there's somebody over at WikiProject Baseball who can make a single template for every team so all of them will be updated? Ryan Vesey 02:23, 23 April 2013 (UTC)

  • I don't know that I can help you with your template issue, but let me point out that the Royals have not made the playoffs since 1985, so I can understand why you might be inclined to make fun of someone for losing to them. (You will, of course, make an exception if my beloved Tigers drop any games to KC in the upcoming series.) AutomaticStrikeout (TCSign AAPT) 02:25, 23 April 2013 (UTC)
  • Oh, the Tigers, my hatred for the tigers is exceeded only by my hatred for the Packers and slightly by my hatred for the Cowboys. In any case, it's good to see you back around ASO. I think I'm going to remove the dramaboards from my watchlist as well, not so much because I've been overwhelmed by the drama, but because I'm not creating content. I'll also ramp up the content creation come the end of finals. I'm really hoping to get Botik of Peter the Great to FA status. Ryan Vesey 02:33, 23 April 2013 (UTC)
  • User:Isaacl would probably be the one to ask about that...he is in to templates. Go Phightins! 21:49, 23 April 2013 (UTC)

Hi. I am not involved and I have already contacted Steven Zhang about this, but if you don't mind, can you please take a look at Wikipedia:Dispute_resolution_noticeboard#Ghost_in_the_Shell.2C_Talk:Ghost_in_the_Shell? All right, gentlemen and User:AutomaticStrikeout, User:Buster7, User:Ched, User:Dennis Brown, User:Ched, User:TheOriginalSoni, User:ZappaOMati, User:The Anonymouse, and User:FoCuSandLeArN (which begs the question, who is the gentleman here, oh wait, that would be User:Ryan Vesey)...we've had our little fun, why don't we all go find a redlink and make it blue, or find a stub and make it a GA knowing that we can now all annoy each other a little bit more. Your resident crank, Go Phightins! 01:40, 2 May 2013 (UTC)

What do you think about the new system? Also, did it take you longer than usual to notice this post? AutomaticStrikeout (TCSign AAPT) 15:52, 1 May 2013 (UTC)

Don't really understand its necessity...seems to make WP too facebooky or twittery or whatever those people use these days...good ole' watchlist for me! (And I'm not sure what you mean by the last part). Go]] Phightins! 19:20, 1 May 2013 (UTC)
The last part was based on the thought that it might take people longer to notice new posts on their talk page if the orange bar is gone. However, I guess it won't apply to you. AutomaticStrikeout (TCSign AAPT) 19:42, 1 May 2013 (UTC)
I actually don't understand the complaints that it is "facebooky" all of the notifications are directly related to Wikipedia editing. Ryan Vesey 19:28, 1 May 2013 (UTC)
Well, I think it may just be the interface. Conceptually, I have no problem with it, but it looks to me like something one would find on a social media site. Plus, the orange bar catches my attention way more than a teeny tiny red "1". The orange bar works :), so I am happy, and when I am happy, everyone is (usually not) happy. Go Phightins! 19:32, 1 May 2013 (UTC)
Have you seen WT:Notifications? There are many unhappy people right now. Ryan Vesey 19:33, 1 May 2013 (UTC)
It's not terribly popular, I see. The biggest problem, for me, is visibility. I notice the orange bar, I don't notice the teeny tiny little number. Go Phightins! 19:43, 1 May 2013 (UTC)
I'm not entire too thrilled about it, but TBH, the orange bar sometimes makes my heart leap for a second due to its color being rather... Surprising. ZappaOMati 20:18, 1 May 2013 (UTC)
Yeah, you might have a point there. AutomaticStrikeout (TCSign AAPT) 20:20, 1 May 2013 (UTC)

Hello all, the next few weeks of my life are going to be extraordinarily busy due to some real life commitments. I will try to pop in now and then, but I need some time to focus on things that are going on off of Wikipedia. Editor of the Week, the Signpost, and my adoptees will be me top priorities when I am online, and I will continue to work on Jim Thome in article space, but the rest of what I do is likely to see a significant decrease for a couple of weeks until some real life activities die down a bit. I would appreciate the help of some talk page stalkers (User:Ryan Vesey, User:AutomaticStrikeout, and User:Buster7, particularly you three, though any other help would also be appreciated) during this intermittent activeness, and I apologize in advance if it takes longer than normal for me to handle requests, respond to questions, etc. Thank you all for your understanding, and I will be back in my full doses as soon as I can. WikiCup 2013 April newsletter

We are a week into Round 3, but it is off to a flying start, with Republic of Rose Island Sven Manguard (submissions) claiming for the high-importance Portal:Sports and Portal:Geography (which are the first portals ever awarded bonus points in the WikiCup) and Wales Cwmhiraeth (submissions) claiming for a did you know of sea, the highest scoring individual did you know article ever submitted for the WikiCup. Round 2 saw very impressive scores at close; first place New South Wales Casliber (submissions) and second place Colorado Sturmvogel_66 (submissions) both scored over 1000 points; a feat not seen in Round 2 since 2010. This, in part, has been made possible by the change in the bonus points rules, but is also testament to the quality of the competition this year. Pool C and Pool G were most competitive, with three quarters of participants making it to Round 3, while Pool D was the least, with only the top two scorers making it through. The lowest qualifying score was 123, significantly higher than last year's 65, 2011's 41 or even 2010's 100.

The next issue of The Signpost is due to include a brief update on the current WikiCup, comparing it to previous years' competitions. This may be of interest to current WikiCup followers, and may help bring some more new faces into the community. We would also like to note that this round includes an extra competitor to the 32 advertised, who has been added to a random pool. This extra inclusion seems to have been the fairest way to deal with a small mistake made before the beginning of this round, but should not affect the competition in a large way. If you have any questions or concerns about this, please feel free to contact one of the judges.

A rules clarification: content promoted between rounds can be claimed in the round after the break, but not the round before. The case in point is content promoted on 29/30 April, which may be claimed in this round. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. • This is so unlike him, I am wondering if he somehow got hijacked? I have no idea how to report that. Gtwfan52 (talk) 21:12, 12 May 2013 (UTC)
  • I don't know either. Does he have any relatives that have access that whatever device he edits on? If so, then WP:BROTHER, but if it's hijacked, then we got a major problem. If it's none of these, then I don't know what in the world has gotten into him. ZappaOMati 21:24, 12 May 2013 (UTC)
  • See his talk. It was him being a teenager, unfortunately. Go Phightins! 21:46, 12 May 2013 (UTC)
  • I did see his talk. I just can't see him doing that and really nothing in his talk precludes an impostor. BTW, I replied at my talk to your message and sent Buster a note. Gtwfan52 (talk) 22:00, 12 May 2013 (UTC)
  • True, but I have a hard time believing that a sibling or hacker would have gotten control of his phone, which means he would have been hacked in order for someone to make those edits, and I have trouble imagining that a random hacker would choose him, of every WP editor, to try to hack. Granted, I don't understand hackers at all, but whatever. Go Phightins! 22:02, 12 May 2013 (UTC)

──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── OK, here's a question User:Gtwfan52, User:ZappaOMati, and User:Lukeno94: do we go to ANI about this? Nothing has happened since those two errant edits, but they are extremely suspicious. Thoughts? Go Phightins! 22:12, 12 May 2013 (UTC)

I don't know, I'm just worried that JHUbal may just be having a bad day, which may be why he made those edits, and that ANI could take this matter a little too harshly. ZappaOMati 22:15, 12 May 2013 (UTC)
Good point. Perhaps we should ping one of our more charismatic admins (that's you User:Dennis Brown) and ask if he would take a brief look at the situation and assess the options. Go Phightins! 22:19, 12 May 2013 (UTC
I will defer to GP on this. I have been gone for nearly two months and my experiences with him are that he is very dedicated altho sometimes somewhat brusque. This behavior is out of sorts from what I know of him...almost, if I could coin a phrase, anti-duck. If you can get a hold of him, I think talking to Dennis is a great idea. After all, JHUbal is very active in his "pet" project. Gtwfan52 (talk) 22:23, 12 May 2013 (UTC)
I left him a message. We will just have to see what happens next. No need for ANI, if he comes back vandalizing and I'm around, I will just block him for a short period. Or WP:AIV if I'm not around. Dennis Brown - - © - @ - Join WER 22:29, 12 May 2013 (UTC)
True, who needs ANI when you have DNI (Dennis' Noticeboard/Incidents or Dramaless Noticeboard/Incidents -- either way, it beats the real one Face-smile.svg). Thanks Dennis. Go Phightins! 22:32, 12 May 2013 (UTC)
I gave up working on an article to work some potential problems here at ANI, so I'm doing a lot of refreshing, saw it quickly. This is pretty mundane, so hoping the calm note will get him to back off a bit. I would rather not block someone due to having a bad day. Dennis Brown - - © - @ - Join WER 22:34, 12 May 2013 (UTC)
If the decision is to send JUbal to the woodshed for a severe paddling, I volunteer. Having to deal with the public all week, I have some pent-up energy that needs to be released. ```Buster Seven Talk 23:27, 12 May 2013 (UTC)

──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── Well, I said myself I'd rather avoid ANI (it's a very mixed bag when I look at the responses to the cases I've filed in the past) for this, as it only appears to be one day's worth of dodginess. Also, I object to the stereotypical comment about teenagers, since I've never engaged in this sort of behaviour during my two-year stay here, and didn't act like this elsewhere, even when I was younger.
