Editathon at Minneapolis Central

The event is on November 3, please let me know if you can come. —innotata 22:31, 24 October 2012 (UTC)

Thank you for your work on this Innotata. I should be able to make it. Gobōnobō + c 04:10, 27 October 2012 (UTC)

Why I stopped using citation templates:

I learned that they take much longer to process and load, and that although this difference is small with short articles or fast connections, it is hard on users without good connections as the articles get longer. OTOH I have heard 'rumors' that 'they' will someday fix this problem universally, and I do understand that templates make export to biblio software easier; I guess I just have chronic underdog bias :-) groupuscule (talk) 03:56, 26 October 2012 (UTC)

I've thought about this before, and have similarly read that if slowness was an issue, it would be dealt with technically and there was no need to alter citation style. However, it is apparent that this remains an issue that affects the utility of the site, particularly for users with slow connections. I'll keep citation load time in mind in the future. Thanks for the note. Gobōnobō + c 04:10, 27 October 2012 (UTC)

Orphaned non-free media (File:Lore (film).jpg)

Thanks for uploading File:Lore (film).jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Hazard-Bot (talk) 04:38, 28 October 2012 (UTC)

If you have time - and feel like it...

I'm going to rework the Michigan Women's Hall of Fame to include images. It didn't take me long to realize there are about 300 names there. I already know from re-working Texas museums that so many names with images will make the page impossible to open. So, I'm going to break it up with a main page (the existing one) that has links to other tables of lists. What I'm wondering, do you think that while I'm working on the tables, you might expand what is now the lead. That way, it won't look so puny that some drive-by person slaps a tag on it. To give you an idea, today and part of yesterday, I've been working on the 1983-1989 part over on one of my user pages. That batch alone is about 60 names, give or take a few. The other 240 or so are separated out in another user page. Either way, I'll work on the tables. Hope you can help with the prose of the lead. Thanks. If you don't want to, that's OK also — Maile (talk) 01:31, 28 October 2012 (UTC)

It's unfortunate that lists like this get bogged down by thumbnail images. I'm glad to see that you're not using the era or group columns. I'd love to help. I'll see if I can find some sources for expanding the lead. Gobōnobō + c 02:03, 28 October 2012 (UTC)
Thanks for helping with this. When I woke up this morning, I considered abandoning the idea. But I'm past the Point of No Return now. I just finished on 1990-1999. That decade alone has 92 nominees and 71,646 bytes. Very few images. I think it's the citations and links that ratchet up the size. I'm estimating that years 2000-2012 have about 150 nominees. — Maile (talk) 00:45, 29 October 2012 (UTC)
Well, well, well...you and I are not the only ones paying attention to this. A sysop just went over to my sandbox where I have the 1983-1989 nominees and removed all non-free images. Fine with me - I'm not wedded to those images. It just seemed very intrusive to have it happen to a sandbox. — Maile (talk) 01:14, 29 October 2012 (UTC)

OK, I've just wiped out all the work I did for the last couple of days. I won't be returning to this one. Ewww-yuck. If we've got someone stalking our sandboxes - which is what that was - it's not worth it to me to put in all this unpaid work. Yuck. A stalker among us. — Maile (talk) 01:52, 29 October 2012 (UTC)

Images that are freely licensed are fine to use wherever, but non-free images can only be used on articles if fair use rationales have been provided (compliant with WP:NFCC). I think removing non-free images from user spaces is just a routine administrative task. I'm sure it was nothing personal. Regardless, I'm sorry to see that your effort was for nought. Hopefully someday the coders will figure out a way to allow us to have fast loading pages that are heavy on citations and images. Gobōnobō + c 08:31, 29 October 2012 (UTC)

WikiCup 2012 October newsletter

The 2012 WikiCup has come to a close; congratulations to Wales Cwmhiraeth (submissions), our 2012 champion! Cwmhiraeth joins our exclusive club of previous winners: Dreamafter (2007), jj137 (2008), Durova (2009), Sturmvogel 66 (2010) and Hurricanehink (2011). Our final standings were as follows:

  1. Wales Cwmhiraeth (submissions)
  2. Canada Sasata (submissions)
  3. Conradh na Gaeilge Grapple X (submissions)
  4. Scotland Casliber (submissions)
  5. New York City Muboshgu (submissions)
  6. Wisconsin Miyagawa (submissions)
  7. Minnesota Ruby2010 (submissions)
  8. Michigan Dana Boomer (submissions)

Prizes for first, second, third and fourth will be awarded, as will prizes for all those who reached the final eight. Every participant who scored in the competition will receive a ribbon of participation. In addition to the prizes based on placement, the following special prizes will be awarded based on high performance in particular areas of content creation. So that the finalists do not have an undue advantage, the prize is awarded to the competitor who scored the highest in any particular field in a single round.

Awards will be handed out in the coming days; please bear with us! This year's competition also saw fantastic contributions in all rounds, from newer Wikipedians contributing their first good or featured articles, right up to highly experienced Wikipedians chasing high scores and contributing to topics outside of their usual comfort zones. It would be impossible to name all of the participants who have achieved things to be proud of, but well done to all of you, and thanks! Wikipedia has certainly benefited from the work of this year's WikiCup participants.

Next year's WikiCup will begin in January. Currently, discussions and polls are open, and all contributions are welcome. You can also sign up for next year's competition. There will be no further newsletters this year, although brief notes may be sent out in December to remind everyone about the upcoming competition. It's been a pleasure to work with you all, and we hope to see you all in January! J Milburn (talkemail) and The ed17 (talkemail) 00:26, 1 November 2012 (UTC)

The article Eric Fehrnstrom has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Only independent, reliable references that go into detail about him are about the etch-a-sketch controversy. This is a clear cast of WP:ONEEVENT

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. This is not a newsletter

This is just a tribute.

Anyway. You're getting this note because you've participated in discussion and/or asked for updates to either the Article Feedback Tool or Page Curation. This isn't about either of those things, I'm afraid ;p. We've recently started working on yet another project: Echo, a notifications system to augment the watchlist. There's not much information at the moment, because we're still working out the scope and the concepts, but if you're interested in further updates you can sign up here.

In addition, we'll be holding an office hours session at 21:00 UTC on Wednesday, 14 November in #wikimedia-office - hope to see you all there :). I appreciate it's an annoying time for non-Europeans: if you're interested in chatting about the project but can't make it, give me a shout and I can set up another session if there's enough interest in one particular timezone or a skype call if there isn't.
